Newbie ROM Question - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all, recently bought the Sprint HTC Hero CDMA, got it rooted, flashed, and using ModACO 2.2 Custom.
Before and After I installed the ROM
When I go to "settings" > "phone info" it says "firmware 1.5"
My question is, can I install a custom ROM that is higher than Android 1.5, or can I only use the custom ROMS under Android 1.5 category?

First of all, as long as your posting a general question you "NEED" to post it under "General" or "Q&A" category!!
Once you are rooted, you can install "any" ROM that's compatible with your device and carrier!!!
Can some admin please move this thread to appropriate section?

Sorry and Thanks
Sorry, wasn't sure if I should do general or here just because it has to do with ROMS.
But, thank you for answering my question

I bet you guys are great to party with. Do you call the cops on someone that's had a couple beers too? Let the mods do their job. They don't need you crying tattle-tale.
To answer the original question, yes you can use any ROM in this section whether it's 1.5 or 2.1. Just pick one that has the features you want and go for it. Be sure to nandroid.

Going to try Aloysius 2.1
It has Apps2SD already installed it so it says, I've still been trying to get that to work right.
You just gotta wipe phone, partition sd fat32+ext2+swap, than install the new update.zip ROM right?

Just follow the instructions the the thread of the ROM of your choice. You'll do fine.

Well said sub. Well said. But yes just follow directions and search the forum. You will learn a lot.

Yeah...Make sure to backup anything on your sdcard to your computer including your very 1st nandroid. Do not lose it. Which recovery do you have 1.6.2 or 1.5.2 or 1.2.3?
When creating the partitions, leave the defauts as they are unless you plan on installing 800+ apps. Most of the time the ROM will tell you what to do. Always nandroid and also copy your nandroid folder to your computer so you don't lose everything if you sd card fails

MOD EDIT - Moved to Q&A

I have 1.2.3
I got Aloysius up and running, still having trouble with the Apps2SD though.
Once I go into DConfig and save my settings it asks me to reboot. Not sure why, but phone won't start up with microSD card in it. It reads the card if I put it in after reboot though.

Radio flash error please help

How you guys doing,
I'm new to this whole thing.
I'm trying to flash my phone with the hero rom.
I just rooted it and trying to install the new radio.
It gives this error.
E:Failure at line 2: assert getprop("ro.product.device") == "dream" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "dream"
I tried google at searched here but found nothing. Please help guys if you can
Does it do it when you try to flash a rom also, by the way with you being a noob I would suggest not going for a hero rom right away but go to a cyan build to get your feet wet oh and this thread will prob get trash since it should be in the q and a section
I haven tried flashing the rom yet.
I'm on the first step where I have to flash the radio with the ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.
After that I'm doing the SPL and then the JACHeroSki-v1.5r2 rom.
Sorry but wasnt sure where to post the question.
Also what is the cyan rom?
Does it have the flash enabled browser and the widgets like hero?
It's not a hero rom, it is a heavily optimised cupcake build but I suggested it so you could get used to flashing before you try the danger spl and risk bricking your phone, hero is slow and laggy even still with a linux swap and flash is only flash 9 and not 10 witch is what most sites require so the most you can do is see flash ads.

Oh and make sure you have the cyanogen recovery image 1.4 before doing anything, this way you can make a backup of your current build in case of any back fires.

Wow, way to be extremely ignorant zalgo, instead of welcoming people into the community and helping them out with their problems, you would rather tarnish the name of xda in a whole by being rude.......good job buddy so proud of you
Big, since I saw in the other post that you that flashing a new download of the radio did not work, it is possible that you do not have root or your recovery image is not valid
well I did the 1 click root method, which flashed the cynagen recovery image and then restarted by holding power and home.
I am unfamiliar with the one click root since I did it the old fashion way awhile back but I would try to flash something like a non hero rom first and see it that goes through, if it does and it takes at least 10 minutes to boot up the first time then we know it's not a root or recovery issuse and that it would just be a bad file issuse
I mean it will take at least 10 minutes to boot the first time after any new rom
so you are saying I should not flash the radio or the spl and just try flashing a non hero rom to see if it works?
Exactly, if it gives you an error when you try that also than we will be closer to figuring out the problem, it would suggest cyanogen 4.02 which is a stable steady rom
I found a Cyanogen 4.0.2 32a rom. Is that one good?
So I basically rename the rom to update.zip and flash it?
No the a is for the htc magic, go to dream android devolpment and download it for the g1, than make sure it is on the root of your sdcard< root is on the main folder not in any sub folders> and go into recovery and hit apply any zip, with cyan 1.4 recovery, you do not need to rename as update
If you did use the one click root method from 1.5, you should have the 1.5 radio...Go to settings > about> baseband version and it should end with 2.22.19.26I. If so you can flash a cyanogen ROM straight away.
If zalgo could quit being an ass that would be nice too.
Looks like its working, its installing the rom right now.

[I896] Firefly or Phoenix 2.2.1 version 4.5

Hello All,
I have the Rogers Captivate i-896 and recently moved over from a Bell I-9000 GTM. Reason why I moved from I9000 is due to the scare that most of the Bell Versions weren't flash friendly.
Due to my bad experience in the past, I just want to double check before I flash any roms. My two big interests lately have been either the Firefly ROM or Pheonix 2.2.1 version 4.5. Just wondering, anyone on XDA with a Rogers I896 that is currently running any of these ROMs with no issues at all?
Sorry if this is a repeat. I'm just not about to read 800 pages through the thread. Thanks a lot and your feedback will help a lot!
I too would love to know the answer to this.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I896 using Tapatalk
Firefly all the way!
The only flaw I have found in it is the SMS timestamps, that can be fixed by installing SMS time fix from the market.
Its infinately customizable. (there is a huge thread based on it and pheonix here, alot of the Pheonix stuff will work on it as well)
It also does not apply the AT&T boot screen on startup, so if you do have any warranty issues getting back to stock is all that much easier.
I'm currently running it and its great!
Its also based on our stock rom.........Whats better than that
GPS working?

PS @nickm50 so my understanding is that you said that Phoenix themes is compatible with firefly right?

Some of the parts of them are. I don't believe the whole themes are. But there are firefly themes in the thread as well.
I know the dialers and boot screens work 100% for sure.
Flashing as we speak.. thanks for the feedback
Can I theme the Stock Dialer on the Fire Fly ROM? Or, will I screw things up if I flash this?

Dammit. Now I feel like a noob, with the question I am about to ask...........
Sooooo, the old way I flashed the rom is not working for me. I am installing Clockwork Mod Recovery via Rom Manager, and then I keep clicking "Reboot into Recovery Mode".. I've done this process over and over atleast 5 times, and its not booting into CWM Recovery. What do I do?
I am trying the OneClick ODIN, but it doesn't give me an Option of which ROM file to flash..
HELP?!
Have you got firefly installed?
What do you mean? I downloaded the ROM and put it on my SD Card.. But, its just a matter of getting into Clockwork Mod Recovery so I can flash it.. I know what to do in Clockwork, just don't know why its not booting into Clockwork Mod.. :??
power down the phone.
boot into recovery manually vol-/vol+ and power
when you get into recovery choose reinstall packages.

USB tethering problem

thank you for that atleast your trying to correct yourself lol..
now as far as tethering goes it was really random with me on liquid and kifno roms it just dosnt work on them i tried different kernals but no dice if you want to stay on a 2.1 sense rom i highly recommend using nfx stock with apps2sd its by far the most stable one and everything works. because its pretty much just the ruu rooted with apps2sd.

Ok, I'll try that, but I really like this ROM and would like to learn how to fix problems with other people's ROMs, if possible, hence my DEV post. Devs should know how to do that. Are you a dev? There has to be a way. Reverse engineer, analyze logcats, update swap out drivers, etc.?
you cant post threads asking questions in development you need to go to the specifc roms thread and post your question there instead. also liquid isnt supporting his 2.1 roms anymore so it might be hard to get a fix for it.

I've experienced the same problem with more than one ROM and have tried that approach to no avail. Downloading and flashing an ENTIRELY NEW ROM because one or two things doesn't work with the current ROM is like throwing the baby out with the bath water, and a very VERY NOOB thing to do. There has to be a way to diagnose issues and fix them in ROMs in general. Someone knows how to do it. And coincidentally USB tethering in the ROM you suggested isn't working for me again! However I installed the wired tether from Google and that is working.. ATM, which did not work with the other ROM.

I didn't see any such rule listed ANYWHERE. And it wasn't your womanly nagging and griping and complaining that caused me to post here, it was my attempt to get my question answered. Your whining gave me justification for a "cross post"-if you will. You wanna be a moderator don't you? Reminds me of this.

Bottom line is, your ranting like a woman didn't help, neither you nor I could change the location of my post even if it really WAS posted in the wrong place, and furthermore, though it was moved, there is no rule stating I can't post questions as a new thread in development.

New roms and kernels - can I do anything I want? - I don't want to brick phone

Hi.
So my Awesome man @tetakpatak helped me to fix my phone yesterday. Although it seemed hard it was quite easy. Too easy. That's where my question goes. I installed Froyo "stock" rom after my phone was "broken" and after that got a new kernel and installed CM.
Can I do this every time? I mean when I want to change Kernel or Rom I could just wipe phone, Install Froyo by Odin and later go with any ROM that there is in ROM section?
Or it doesn't work that way? Or I need to install older versions of roms and update them?
Lets say I want to install ParanoidAndroid or Darky instead of my CM now - I just wipe all data and cache and install.zip thru CWM?
What about Kernel?
Thanks in advance, have a nice day.

Great it works now, mate
In general, yes, after anything with custom ROMs goes wrong it is best one can do to reflash it with a stock ROM. It can actually be any stock ROM, I just adviced to do it with Froyo as I've checked short ago that all download links are still "alive".... and.... in my opinion Froyo is somehow really good ground to be updated to the CM.
So it would be wise to save all the files and software you used, as they worked well for your phone
No problem flashing and trying other ROMs. Always read well the opening post of the threads and pay attention what is important to do. Always save your data externally (and backup your IMEI/efs with terminal emulator app) and wipe all before changing ROM. If anything goes wrong by overwriting your custom ROM, flash stock ROM again and upgrade from there
My last words.... to all users of an amazing, old, good SGS GT-i9000: please consider to make a little donation to the developer pawitp. That amazing developer keeps this phone still alive. Nearly all kernels and ROMs you find on the forum wouldn't exist if pawitp wasn't there. He now works on stabilizing the CM10.2 / Android 4.3 for our beloved i9000 somewhere in Thailand, and he doesn't even own this phone!
Kernels
Do you need to wipe data in order to install a new kernel? I've never tried it before and would rather not mess it up.

[Q] S Off and Updating ROM on GSM Unlocked One M8

Hey guys, how's it going?
Well, I recently bought an HTC One M8. It is the Sprint Variant I believe. So it was an unlocked version with ViperOne 1.7.0 installed. I checked for updates and found there was an update for 1.8.0, to which I instantly updated. I was aware that Viper 2.4.0 is available for the device too, hence my question is if it's okay to update to flash/update full ROMs to this unlocked M8? I am aware that I would lose the unlock on non Sense based ROMs though. So, is there anything I should consider/remember before flashing the full ROM to the device?
Another problem I am facing is with achieving S Off. I am aware about what all of this is as I have always been involved with such things but always with factory unlocked variants. Anyway, I tried the firewater method, for at least 10 times but everytime it says that it can't S Off my device. (Screenshot Attached)

Is there something I can do about this? Anyone who had faced this and resolved it?
Other than these two little issues, my final question is that IF in case anything goes wrong, would a Nandroid Backup restore my phone to the current state INCLUDING the SIM Unlock?
In simpler terms, can anyone tell me what all can and can not affect the SIM unlock on my device? Kernels, ROMs, Mods, etc?
I did a lot of search before posting this thread (two nights) and found answers to many other questions and doubts but not to these three. Sorry if these are all actually noob questions. Thank you!
Anyone?

Only way to achieve soff is sunshine in conditions like you. It works like a charm. if you would have problem with sim unlock, Then, flash Bad Boyz rom and follow the instruction at second post. Just past same path 4 days ago
I would definitely do all of this but now I have another problem. I attempted to change runtime on Venom 1.8.0 but now it wouldn't reboot. Doesn't go past "HTC One" screen on boot. Can't try any other ROM because my broadband is having troubles. *sad*

Their is a small zip to change runtime back to dalvik it's your best choice or reflash the Rom next time do a nandroid before doing that. Your phone will not boot because you have a tweak or theme/mod that art doesn't like.. good luck remember the zip is in the read me section of viperrom.

I had a couple of NANDROID backups but they didn't correct the issue either. In the end, I had to wipe system and flash the ROM again. Works fine since then.
