Just got my N1 - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just powered up my N1 for the first time.. And well, have a few questions..
I came from a rooted G1 and was use to multi touch. So, uh... where is it on the N1?
How do I go about enabling multi touch support on the N1?

ummm the nexus comes with multi touch out of the box. perhaps you should open up the web browser, or maps, and actually try it? unless you bought an old nexus where the OS has not been updated to the latest, you should update it first.

There are a TON of threads you will want to read first.
Determine if you want to root, if you do, which ROM do you want?
Do you want for the OTA 2.2 update, or get a custom 2.2 ROM?
Is multitouch the only feature you are concerned with?

N00b question

I have my HTC Vogue Touch flashed to android... Just foud out I have a free upgrade from Sprint and thinking about the HTC Hero..
doing some research before I get it as I love customizing this stuff and there looks to be plenty of ROMs here...
my first question being: aside from apps2sd what is the main reason for booting these ROMs? It even looks like the camera doesn't work in many of them. (which surprised me considering the phone is droid - stock)..
second question: I can see the rooting guides but not how to flash the HERo to any of these ROMs.. or am I missing something here?
Thanks..

get the evo or wait for the galaxy s pro
The Hero is still a worthy phone.
thanks for the advice..
an explanation as to why would be nice
and an answer to my other inquiries as well if possible..
i do love my hero but if i had an upgrade right now i wouldnt go to a "last gen" phone
evo is a step up from the hero in every spec and is 4G!!!!!
the samsung galaxy will be very comparable to the evo but seems a little faster on the processing side
most of these roms are 2.1 which is complete exept for a couple bugs here and there. The roms that are dev'ing are the 2.2 roms which needs to be made from the ground up.

the custom roms are faster/better than the sprint rom.
the camera works in all the roms as far as i know? there was a time when the camera didn't work because HTC were being Dbags and withholding the kernel source, but toast solved that problem. the only rom atm without camera AFAIK is the froyo dev build.

once you root if you use the guides then they will show you how to flash a updated/custom recovery. then flashing roms is easy. boot into recovery and choose
Code:

BOOM isn't that easy.

question 1. besides apps2sd the main reason for booting roms is looks and customization in my oppinion. you can change around the keyboard the lock screen the menu options even remove the terrible bloatware included on the phone. plus an upside is speed - remove the files eating all your battery life and take that battery life and put it to overclocking the cpu.
as for the camera i don't know what you are talking about. almost every rom i've installed has the camera working correctly. sometimes a file is removed to make the phone run faster and the camera doesn't work but most of the times the camera is fixed pretty fast.
question 2. rooting your phone gives you access to files on your phone otherwise not able to delete. i.e. bloatware. by rooting your phone you can remove these files or adjust them how you want. now the ROM is a customization of android x.x that you flash to your hero that otherpeople have customized themselves. like removing the bloatware for you or using a custom kernel to make your phone run faster. or just changing around the entire look of android.
The Hero is a fantastic phone and can do many things. i would say upgrade and don't look back. but if you want a snapdragon CPU get the Evo. which is also an awesome phone. (but quite a bit more expensive)

totally ignore the last part. Samsung is terrible also am I crazy or doesn't need to be in a different section?
I see someone else posted about the camera..
Every single current rom we have, has a working camera. Aside from froyo 2.2, that hasnt been publicly released yet (it will soon though).
And rom currently up-to-date within the past month, should have everything working. You might run in to a few bugs, but most are user errors or can be simply fixed.
The hero is still a great phone with many months left in it. The Evo though is still the #1 choice, and i would get one if i could.
And person above me.. No you are not crazy. Should be in general section or Q & A

both of these statements are completely true.
the Hero is actually quite awesome, lots of potential in it still, and my guess is the 2.2 will run on it just swimmingly.
that being said... if you can get one cheap, do it! But frankly, if you have upgrade credit coming to you, use it on a newer gen phone... or I would anyway. sadly, there will be less ROMs/mods/community/whathaveyou for it, balanced by a sense of adventure exploring new territory with other ROMflash addicts and ROMcookers!

Hero's a great phone.
Unbeatable combination of style, size, power, and functionality.

still a bit confused. probably will make more sense once I get the phone.
for instance i'm looking at this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291
point me to another one if there is something better...
I assume I put the ROMs on the SD card (andboot folder maybe? thats what it was on my vogue) and going into recovery console to select the "flash update.zip" will wipe the phone and install the custom ROM?
also, where can I gain clarification on these new acronyms to me such as JIT?
I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.. Afterall, I am a certified MS Server Admin and CCNA network admin.. hhaha
thanks for your help. great community here. hopefully i'll be sticking around.

that guide is old.
THIS ONE
will work for 2.1 which is what the hero has now.
you can google JIT. google google google. all the questions have been answered at some point or another, its better to read someone's post than make a new post about the same thing thousands of other people have already asked about.
Ok found it. At first all I got were links to roms with JIT on it.
So after rooting, I basically get back into the recovery console and select flash from zip sdcard? Heck of alot easier than the Vogue I tell you that...
Thanks for the link
Another edit: Do the custom roms have multiple home page screens you can scroll to? On my vogue 1.6 droid I have like 5 home screens I can put shortcuts on. I just watched a HTC hero video on sprint and on the customizing video it didn't look like that was there.
I'm not saying the Hero isn't a good phone.. I'm saying if you have an upgrade, get the Evo or you'll be upset later. The phone is so much faster... 4g.. double cameras..big screen...
Bad better life, and it's a brick. I wouldn't use an upgrade on an old gen phone.
I just become a Sprint Preferred or whatever.. by having a plan over $70 and paying on time for 6 months.. I get my free upgrade in February. I definitely won't even consider the Evo.. I'll be looking at the next big thing.

there are 7 screens you can put apps and widgets on. 1 home then 3 to the left and right.
Remember the movie Mad Max? Or was it the Road Warrior? It doesn't matter. The quote is still valid.
Speed is a question of money. How fast can you afford to go?
If you can afford it, get the Evo. If you want a cheaper, yet still awe phone, get the Hero. Then use your savings for a bigger SDHC card and Bluetooth headphones and other coolness.
I agree that the phone has a lot left in it, but a lot of devs from several phones have jumped shipped to the Evo. I'm sticking with my Hero for another year atleast, unless a real good deal comes up.
If you want to save money I would get ther Hero as it it a lot cheaper than the Evo and you will also save the $10 extra a month. That and the Evo is too damn big. To me it was uncomfortable to hold and use with one hand.
Not only can you flash /install new roms, but with a little research you can mod the rom your self and theme it how you want. Also wireless tether is awesome and the Overclocking and Undervolting is making the phone better and faster.
Ok so I spent a few days trolling.
Looks like I'm going to have to flash the old RUU since I did the 2.1 update, then follow guide, then the custom ROM.
Question though, I'm stuck on picking one: Some are very nicely featured but I don't like the default look on any of them or the themes available in a 2nd/3rd post of the ROMs thread; generically speaking, is any themes compatible with any ROM? For instance, the Cyanogen mods you can Google to dark corners of the internet...

[Q] Telus Milestone question

hey guys.. ive tried looking for this information but cant find it any where.. i currently have HTC desire and still have the 14 days to return the phone.. im thinking of goin with a Milestone because of the qwerty keyboard.. onscreen really isnt working for me.. i had a few questions:
1. Is it possible to flash another rom on the telus milestone (froyo most likely).. I have looked around for this.. some say u can some say u cant im really confused.. apparently its locked so u only put a ROM on top of the stock?? if that is the case then would it not be bogged down by the stock rom on there still?
2. If you can reflash or whatever its called to froyo.. would i lose warranty? i have the phone replacement with best buy.. would that be gone? and if yes, is there a way to go back to the stock rom so they would never know? i read somewhere that a telus stock rom doesnt exist.. so im not sure
3. i read somewhere that you cant manually link your phone and google contacts to facebook contacts.. is this true? because in my desire its very easy to do so.
4. why does everyone want to unlock 3g on telus phones? isnt the milestone already on the new hspa network??
5. (optional) is it a good idea to with the milestone over desire? i know opinions may be biased cuz its a milestone forum but just thought id ask.. im iffy about the lower cpu speed and half the ram.
thank you in advance for your help.. and sorry if i posted in the wrong section

The only bit of the software left stock is the kernel. There won't be any noticeable decrease in free space when you flash a custom "rom". You just won't gain the performance benefits of a completely optimized kernel, which people are trying to work around.

Technically you do lose your warranty, but it's easy to return to your stock firmware. There's a thread stickied in this forum for this very purpose.

I believe what you're referring to is when people with Telus milestones flash "roms" from different parts of the world. Usually it disables the frequencies needed for 3G in North America.

They're both great devices. The Milestone has the disadvantage of being locked down ridiculously tight by Motorola, but it's really up to preference. I'm going to make the assumption that you're not crazy about customizing your phone, in which case, you probably won't notice much difference. ROM availability is far superior for the Desire, though, due to it's unlocked bootloader. If a QWERTY keyboard is something you like, then the choice is pretty clear.
Lastly, this is the wrong section, lol.
okay thank you very much.. yes I wont be modding it too much .. however i would like to have froyo on it.. i was just scared that I will be wasting my phone replacement plan if i cant get it back to the stock rom..

[Q] What are Froyo leaked Pros & Cons

Hi guys Im new to this thread and I've been reading the whole treads for like 3 days and for some reason im getting confused about the pros and cons so I just want to ask if my understanding about the froyo leak flash with odin3 is correct. If there is something else that i forgot to mention that is really important please remind me before i flash my new captivate
PRos:
1. flash 10.1 on browser
2. JIt compliler
3. no need to root the phone
4. can save apps on sd card
5. GPs more accurate
6. can still be root
Cons:
1. unlocked code from 2.1 eclair to use other sim will not work anymore
2. IMEI number will change and impossible to retrived unless you send them back to samsung?
3. no more android keyboard
4. void the warranty?
5. updating through OTA will not work anymore after reverting from froyo 2.2 leak to the stock 2.1 eclair by using odin3
6. after flashing couple of times from reverting to eclair to froyo will ban you from andriod market and the phone will state that there is no sim even if there is one inserted
7. lag issues
This is my first time to have an android phone so im totally noob and no idea yet and a little scared of making mistake. Also if i root my phone will i be able to unroot it again in case i want to return back the phone to at&t? Thank you in advance
Are your pros supposed to be compared to 2.1?
"no need to root"? There was not a need a root 2.1 either - or the same reasons existed, so i don't follow this.
The way i see it, 2.2 gives you access to 2.2 only apps in the store. Not much else. It is 2.2, yes, but there is not a lot more functionality. I do want it, but I can wait for official build.
BTW, there are built in tether apps - no longer in 2.1 JH7. That could be a pro.
Cons:
How about bugs and work arounds. It is stable, but Google groups and Exchange groups don't work. Samsung email client is broken when replying, etc. There is a pretty good list.
I will wait for the next build from Samsung, but that is me.
If your a "basic" user such I am (no exchange support needed) and just do the basic tweet/fb/browse for porn (erm?)/ play music/txt etc... I think you would be fine.
But.. if your not comfortable flashing ROM's and realize that your going to be voiding your warranty as soon as you do. Then don't do it and wait for OTA.
And I can't imagine that the OTA would be any better or feature rich then Cognition's 2.2.X beta.
Btw.... you listed
"3. no more android keyboard"
DG added it into the latest build.
CON: ATT address book doesnt work.
PRO: better battery life.
Pro: Cognition any version
Con: You won't get anything done because you're playing with your phone too much!

I have not heard of this problem before. I will do some checking on it but sounds like he is a noob that is looking into anything that can possibly go wrong. Also sounds like whoever originally posted that problem most likely had no idea what they were doing and flashed 2.2 wrong even though I do not know how that is possible. I have flashed back and forth since SRE and have done so for each Cog build to keep current. Phone works amazingly, GPS is flawless and is the fastest phone I have ever owned. Go Cognition!!

DON'T DO IT!!!! wait for the Official release, this is a leaked..aka stolen version of froyo, you will void your warrenty. If you still want to do it after what i said keep in mind that when the Official release of froyo comes out and ATT wants to do an over the air (OTA) update, the ATT server will not recognize your phones firmware any more so you won't be able to get the update of the leagle version of froyo. This leaked...or stolen version is full of glitches don't download it.

Once you down load this froyo stolen version 80% of the android market will not recognize your phone so apps that you had previously won't be available anymore. I've been using 2.2 since like a couple days it was released. * touchwood* so far all I noticed is that my battery performance is better. I don't even know what "glitches" u r talking about.
Before u say some software is glitchy, please be specific atleast for a few of them. And an FYI, not having android keyboard is not a glitch.
EDIT:
I got my first Captivate right on the 2nd day of its release. I exchanged it for another in 2 weeks due to battery issues. I rooted, n then flashed back to stock and returned. No question of warranty loss if you know how to revert back to stock.

I have been on the froyo LEAK since the day after it popped up and it has been much more stable than any version of eclair EVER was. This is the whole point of xda....you can go hang out with all the newbs at androidforums or something and preach about how dangerous it is and stick with eclair.
you have no clue if it is stolen. How do you know samsung didn't release this on purpose to get feedback?? I would never listen to a word ATT says they are a joke. ok froyo has market issues right now do to presumably the android id. it has many new gui features and is much faster and in my experiance better battery life. so if you cant deal with the market errors wait for an official release. that is why many are going back. that and some of us are addicted to flashing our phones every 48 hours.

Hi, I'm going to buy a Samsung Captivate unlock coz I'm using T-Mobile right now. But before buying it I have some questions to make sure that I'm not gonna regret of buying it.
1. What's version of Android it running ? I know it comes out with 2.1 but somebody said that It already updates to Froyo.
2. Will it be upgraded to Froyo or Gingerbread ? and can I get that update officially with my phone unlocked ?
3. I heard that AT&T restricted the Market and some Apps, so what's exactly that restriction about and can I get rid of that ?
4. Is there any custom ROM for this phone and what's the best ?
I really love the design of this phone and the spec is really good too but I also afraid of the AT&T restriction and the phone's OS won't be upgraded. There is noway I buy a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S coz it looks like the iPhone 3GS's clone .

1. 2.1 comes stock, and that's all that is available officially.
2. Maybe, we hope to get something. If so, you should be able to get it.
3. Yes, there are market restrictions. Go to Captivate, Android Dev sections and there's lots of custom tools for removing restrictions, along with lots of custom ROM's, ie, Phoenix, Cog, Darky, Doc's, etc.
4. See above. I personally like all that I have tried, so I usually flash a few times a week.
You really want a captivate over a nexus s or g2? They're probably better phones.
Yes, like I said I love the design of the Captivate. The Nexus S doesn't use the Gorilla Glass Display that is a negative point make me don't like it. Btw, when I use a new custom ROM, I don't need to unlock my phone again, do I ?
you do realize that when you use a captivate on tmobile, you dont get 3g?
Personally i would jump ALL over the nexus S. Its the captivate on steroids. But DO stay away from the G2....as far as i know its dead past 2.2 because it doesnt have the prerequesites for 2.3 and higher (1ghz processor)

Thanks, I know that, currently I don't use 3G. I'm gonna make a new contract plan next month and I'm gonna get the Dell Venue because I love Windows Phone. However, I love to play with Android too that's why I wanna get one Android phone and I see that the Captivate has a really good design.

[Q] G1 as a handheld games console

Hi, I have a old G1 that's just gathering dust.
Its been rooted and running one of the Super D ROMS. (Haven't used it since I got a Desire)
Basically I've gotten fed up trying play SNES ROMS etc on a touch screen phone and remember how much easier it was on the G1 keyboard.
As its only going to be used for running games from the SD card.
Can anyone recommended or create a minimalistic ROM for this purpose.
Also, would I need to have a Sim card in the phone?
no need for a sim card, but you may wont the ram hack (2708+) i would imagine that might be better. you would want a basic rom maybe even a cupcake (not sure why but this sounds right) find the best kernel to flash over it, check ezterry's kernel thread. then use titanium backup or something similar to take out just about everything you can that could possibly run so that it wont interfere with your gaming. truthfully a lot of newer roms may work well for you as long as you just remove a lot of things that arent need to play your games - hopefully someone will come on here and steer you a bit closer.
check out this link for an idea of what you can remove from a rom and be safe
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Barebones
also depending on the rom maybe do one that asks to install gapps separate and dont do it...
No, cupcake doesn't have a 2708+ kernel for it...
Well...it does sorta...but it barely works and doesn't do much IIRC
Try froyobylaszlo
you'll need the 2708+ radio and spl
Use my mod of it, Frayo, and you can customize what system apps it flashes
So just put 0 for all of them in the install.txt (you'll know what im talking about when you find the rom)
Once you have the 2708+ radio/spl just flash frayo and that's it! gapps included.
And no it's not just cuz its my mod xD...froyobylaszlo is crazy fast, and once you remove system apps its even faster, and frayo can help you not install them in the first place
good call and the frayo, that would make it easier
im not sure why i feel cupcake would be better, no idea why but it sounds good
if you flash the right kernel over a cupcake rom it should work with the 2708+
but probably would get more speed in frayo with bare system apps, and you can take out a few more too
Cheers for the advice.
Its been a long time since I read about G1 updates so I've got some catching up to do.
Is there a walk through for this ram hack?
Last thing I did to my G1 was install Super D a long time ago.

Not really
There's a guide, but you gotta be familiar with fastboot to use it
Or you can find a topic called "upgrading to gingerbread" by gunner*numbers*
We walked him through it
You'll have to dig through the topic to find it though

Hey! Check out my Dreamboy thread in General. I was thinking of making a rom just for that purpose
