flash ROM without overwriting data - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to flash a minimal ROM to the SE X1 such that the data (documents, pictures, music, etc) on the existing ROM does not get overwritten?

You have to backup these things, like putting it on your SD card or PC. No other way.

Seriously? There is no way of me getting to my data?
I am able to start the phone (get the "beta expired message" plastered all over the screen).
I can get into the bootloader and when I plug the phone to the PC I see a Microsoft USB sync device but cannot sync with it.
Is there a way to start active sync via an autorun file on the SD card?
Come on...there has got to be a way for me to get to the data on the phone.

You cannot sync with it because your phone isn't on. As far as I know there is no other way then flashing or hard-resetting your device.

not that I heard of
the q sounds familiar, wasn't that already raised in another thread...?
Mod. edit: not dev related, moved to general

Same OP btw
on topic: afaik there is no way getting your data from a beta expired device (except the data on the storage card). And you can't flash a ROM without erasing the data on the phone.

What ROM are/were you using?
Maybe try contacting the Chef to see if he has any ideas...

I was using the Energy ROM. I already contacted NRG and he was not very helpful.
When the phone boots up, I can see the custom background image. I can also, with some messing around, get to the slide show and I see that all my pictures are there.
However, I cannot get the phone to connect to my PC via activesync (possibly because activesync is disabled on the phone). I tried to blindly navigate the menus but no luck so far. On the other hand, I was able to connect the phone to my PC using bluetooth, but for some reason OBEX file transfer is not working therefore Bluetooth explorer does not work with the phone.
If I slide open and closed the screen, I can somewhat navigate through some screens. If I hit the START button, I can navigate through all the menus, but then nothing shows up because of the white screen.
This is really frustrating because all my files all there, but just a wee bit out of reach.
I toyed with the idea of flashing with the smallest ROM I could find and then dump the ROM back to the PC and then use recovery software to try and recover the files. I would need to experiment with a second X1 just to be sure that it could work.
At this point, any ideas are more than welcome, and anything other than "it can't be done" will definitely be appreciated.
Thanks,
T

Accessing system files

Windows Media Player 10 has just uninstalled itself from my BA... short of a hard reset and start again, how can I get it back? I tried a hard reset then copy the files from the windows folder but it wont let me copy them!!
For now, I have restored my previous setup, and I will try to instlal the older WMP 7.1... but its really annoying.
Can anyone tell me for example how to access protected files? Can I access the device in bootloader mode from a computer perhaps?
Thanks for you help!
I spoke too soon.. upon trying to do an ActiveSync restore after a hard reset, it tells me I cannot restore since the restore was created from a different kind of mobile device... bollocks, HELP!!!
Alright, Ive restored OK... thats that crisis over.
And post-restore, the media player prog is back in the windows folder but start icon isnt, so will put that back manually.
However I suppose my original question still stands, is there any way to access those locked system files e.g. for copying?
I'm thinking acessing the PPC when windows isnt loaded is the way to do it?

You are right. I am looking for a method to access window folders in bootloader mode or before tapping on screen. But, I didn´t find it anywhere.

[tut] flash rom without pc (sd card method)

0. Make sure phone is hard-spl first
1. Make sure SD card is formatted with fat-32
2. rename the image file (ruu_signed.nbh) to rhodimg.nbh, then copy that to the ROOT OF THE MICRO SD CARD, Insert card into phone
3. Set your phone in bootloader (Hold the "volume down" and hold the power on button until you see the tri-color screen.
4. Then follow the on-screen instruction
5. (OPTIONAL) -after flash, make sure to hardreset (pull battery, insert battery then hold green and red PHONE buttons (send/end) and hold powerbutton) follow onscreen instruction.
thanks for the info
I've tried the above and somehow it won't work on my TP2, it stays at "Serial" text in the white box, I'm assuming it already went past the SD slot then? Checking for the image.
I have the Energy rom loaded on the SD card, named as explained in the first post in this topic, it is placed in the root of the SD card, no folders or other files exist on that card. I removed the SIM card from the phone just to be sure. Is there anything I am missing, or is there anyone else who actually used this method to flash his or her device?
Info:
SPL: OliNex 0.85
ROM: |RHOD|6.5|ROM|WWE| ★ EnergyROM "Warhawk" (23016) ★ | Built Aug 21 |Manila 2.5 / 2.1|
SD Card: 4GB MicroSDHC (No brand on card, supplied with the branded T-Mo TP2 (Vario V)
Formatted: fat-32
Thanks
The nbh file needs to be in capital letters! RHODIMG.nbh
And step 5 isnt to be done until the "Tap screen to set up device" screen!
Just reset when your phone says Update successful!
And done, name changed to the correct format. No luck. Reformatting the card now to see if that changes anything. Update in a few.
And that too didn't work sadly. Either someone here notices I'm doing something wrong, or I'll just wait till I get near a machine natively running Windows Running Mac OS here so can't run the executable, and read that it's not quite a good idea to flash it from a virtual OS.

You will want to partition your card so the nbh image is in a partion of at the largest 1G, anything larger makes it hard for the phone to find and read the nbh file! I have a 1G card just for flashing and it works perfect! And it also may be the mac, they never play nice with windows!
It's not the mac screwing it up in this case as I am using a virtual Windows OS to work on the card. (MacOS leaves some folders on the card that I don't want on it)
Will try partitioning the card, cheers. I'll update when I know more. ANd thanks for the help ^_^
Update:
Partioned the MicroSD card to 0.5GB, no change sadly.
thanks for information
Ok, SD update worked now, however, step 5 won't go (Oh crap...) Have the grey screen with "Update Complete" and "UPDATE SUCCESS" However, it won't do anything if I hold down Send/End/Power at the same time for over 10 seconds. How long should that take normally? What's my best option right now? Can't see any other than to unplug the phone and take out the battary, however, will this brick it?

When is says "UPDATE SUCCESS", just rest with the stylus.
Dave
Thanks for the swift reply! Done it, it's booting up as I am typing this. Didn't quite have the guts to just do that without having read I could when flashing from SD. (Was unsure how the device would react to soft reset then a first booth with the SD present etc)
Anyways, rambling. Thanks!
these post are telling me how to flash while the rom is already on the phone, but i'm missing the step on how to get the rom file on the phone in order to move it to the sd card.......... how do i get the file to the phone? do i put it onto the phone from the computer or do i go to my browser on my phone and download it from there to the phone

Everything you need to know is HERE. I really suggest you fully read the instructions so you avoid bricking your phone by mistake.
In re: making sure you're hardspl'd first, does that still apply if you're flashing an official ROM? Or just for user cooked ROMs?
I'm about to update my Verizon TP2 with the newly released official 6.5 from verizon. I'm not hard spl'd, and honestly, know very little about that particular modification.
not for official
I dont think you have to be hard SPL'd for an official ROM. I think everything is included in the ROM package. (at least for T-Mobile it is)
btw the .nbh does not have to be named in all capitals. I have personally done it both ways with no problems at all. RHODIMG.nbh works just as well as rhodimg.nbh

Thanks for the quick response!
Sadly, the way the install file is set up to work, I can't get to the nbh file. It insists on installing that via an active sync connection. I was hoping it would extract from the exe and schedule it for active sync installation, then I could hunt down the ROM, copy it to my SD card, and run it from there.

hmm.. sorry for kicking this post, but you can unpack the exe-file with winrar. just grab the biggest file you can find (RUU_signed.nbh, and rename it to rhodimg.nbh), copy it to your root-folder (fast way for accessing bootloader is to also copy the "EnterBootLoader.exe" -file to your SD-card, and to start that file after copying both the files). Now just enter the bootloader, and it works! (don't be scared when the screen goes black for a moment, and the bootloader has reloaded. It's meant to do that )
I still have a little question by the way: is it possible to flash the hardSPL this way? or should i rename it to something else?
No, Hard SPL needs to be done from the PC as it checks IMEI online and IP address. You only get 1 licence, can ask for more or purchase more licences, but it can't be done any other way...

Yeah, it's a pity this has been done (though I understand why...)
My device cannot connect to PC anymore, so cannot use HSPL anymore!

Much obliged. I've actually been scared off the official vzw 6.5 because of issues upgraders have reported, but someday I'll put that to use.

Activesync

Help required please. I want to HSPL my phone but i need an internet connection to do that. The problem is whenever i install activesync and connect my phone, the wireless internet on my laptop just don't work even after disconnecting my phone and i have to restore my windows to a time before i installed activesync in order to make my wireless connection work again. Please help me to solve this problem any setting in activesync i need to change to make it work? I will really appreciate your help.
Delete and recreate your sync relationship.
Make sure you select enable wireless connections while sync'd.
Regarding HSPL, have you tried thre manual install first? Otherwise it'll cost you.
Also, with the auto install or installing via RUU.exe active sync will disconnect and only USB connection will remain so it should be able to connect to the network during install.
I have resync many times but my internet doesnt work. It doesnt even work after removing the phone from active sync. The only way to make my connection work again is to restore my computer to a date before installing the activesync. Anyways i will try to connect it through my office computer if it didn't worked again.
And i am installing HSPL for the very first time so pls guide me on this, what's a manual install. I went through this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=520312
and going to install through this file " Topaz-HardSPL_V5_00R5_183HSPL.zip ". Am i doing it correct? And i dont have to install HSPL 1.33 before installing 1.83, i can start directly from 1.83 right??? And after that i will install the energy ROM through storage card method. Please confirm that i am doing it correctly. Any help regarding this will be highly appreciated.
Not sure about your ActiiveSync issue. So you instsall AS and you no longer can access internet from PC? What OS are you running? If its Vista, you use Windows Mobile Device Center, which replaced AS.
Regarding HSPL, I will be brief in my explanation and point you back to the thread and search for my posts as I have posted instructions there many times, they just get buried in the many pages.
There are 3 methods to flash;
1. Auto Install, where you download the Topaz-HardSPL_V5_00R5_183HSPL.zip and the enablenewrapi. cab, copy and install .cab to your device, sync to PC, then run .exe.
This method will ask you to donate and will not work unless you do.
2. Flash from SD card, you can rename any .nbh file to TOPAIMG.nbh, place in the root of your SD card, enter bootloader mode (search for instructions) and it will initiate the flash.
3. Custom RUU, find and download Topaz RUU.exe, place .nbh file in same folder as RUU.exe, sync your device to you PC and run the RUU.exe.
I use #3 exclusively and have never had an issue, others get stuck at 0% progress an have to soft reset.
I believe you need to flash 1.83, then flash to 2.51 but I am not 100% sure you can't flash directly to 2.51. Do not bother flashing 1.33.
I have provided tools for #2 and #3, #1 exe and cab are available in the HSPL thread.
If you thoroughly read all of my instructions and it does not work, your only option will be to pay through the auto install method and if you encounter issues open a ticket as instructed in the thread.
Thanks a lot. I will try the #3 method. And will post how it went. Thanks again.
I tried both the SD card and manual method and placed the "customRUU.exe" and the "1.83 nbh file" in the same folder in my PC and while activesynced i lauched the cutomRUU.exe but after going into that tri color screen and then into usb mode it just stucks at 0% and nothing happens. I waited for like 5 mins but it just got stuck at 0%. What should i do now?
BTW i have flashed my TD2 with the original ROM update of WinMo 6.5 before.

All,
for those who have Windows 7 and run with Office 2010 64bits it's not possible to sync your phone. The solution is to deinstall office 2010 and install office 2010 32 bits. You don't have to save your settings and files, after installing your system find everything incl. account setting
I still had sync problems; the second time i pluged in, my pc did not find my phone. Looking on internet i found the next solution and after trying i must say it works;
Same issues!
Here is what I have done:
Step 1: Connect my Samsung Omnia (SCH- i910) Touch Diamond II to the USB Port of PC. Windows automatically installed driver in device manager called "Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter." Windows Mobile Device Center automatically loaded.
Step 2: With WMDC running, I can browse all files on device, my storage, and storage card. I have options to add/delete programs. I can sync with Windows Media Player. I can also download all pictures and video files to the PC with a single click!
All this is great but the MOST important thing to me is to sync my Contacts with Microsoft Outlook. When I press "sync", if it hasn't tried to start automatically, the green icon in tray spins, everything looks like it's going to work but nothing. It just hangs there till I finally cancel and exit. Looking through other tips, I read something about windows firewall. I have enabled the recommended entries as well as disabling firewall completely with no results.
Further testing, I can sync mobile favorites if I uncheck all others but still can not sync Contacts. Need a fix!
All,
be also aware of remove hardware, then remove generic serial rejecten.
Regards, John
Windows 7 and Office 2010 can sync with Touch Diamond. First you must setup mail account in Outlook, and it must be default mail client, and then everything can be synchronized. Windows Mobile Device Center is prerequisite 32bit or 64bit version, depending of Windows 7 version

NAV-U50 how to restore the OS

Hello,
i have accidentally deleted the wrong folder on my GPS and now i can not boot it anymore.
hardware details:
Sony NV-U50
without SD card slot.
what i have done
originally this device has the sony nav-u navigation software installed running on windows CE....
i have found here in the forum and other forums some posts on how connect the device to my pc and get the igo8 running on it.
so after doing all the procedure i got igo8.3 to run on that device.
but i had to manually start it via total commander.
so i have deleted the contend from the nav-u folder and replaced it with the igo folder contend... and now the device does not boot anymore :-(
after the sony splash screen i get a picture with "INSTALL" text.
before i did all this i have done a backup from the folder but now is the question how do i get it back on the device? i can not connect it back to my pc... it does not get to the sync mode anymore...
any advice would be helpful and would save me from buying a new device.
thank you very much.
also i have opened the device to search for a flash card or something....
i could not find any storage card :-(
http://www.google.com/search?client...store+the+OS&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
thanks for the answer
but the first 3 results are from me asking this question.
and i did not receive an answer.

Cracked Screen, How to blind copy data to replacement??

I just got my captivate 1 month ago (first android). I rooted the phone and installed Cognition 2.3b6 right when i got it. I have never backed up the phone.
2 days ago the phone dropped from about 18 inches onto the bathroom floor. Cracking the interior of the screen. Origintally i could see the top half, the touchscreen hardly works. Now i can only see a faint blue color when i boot hte phone. It still works, i get alarms and feel it vibrate.
I understand that I might be able to do a nandroid backup (is it possible to do it blind?), but is that the correct thing to do? Will that change the deviceID of my replacement phone from AT&T (insurance replacement).
I would like to get the data backed up and transferred over asap so i can pack the old phone up and ship it off before the holidays.
Thank you guys!
adb pull /sdcard
Some one else might be able to help you with the specifics, but pull the /sdcard data from your phone.
From a phone
what?
I figured i need to probably copy it to the sd card. But from what i understand, some applications rely on DeviceID's and not the actual phone. Ergo, if you do a complete nandroid backup it will also copy over the DeviceID (from what i understand, correct me if i'm wrong).
Or is that something different than what you are suggesting?
Your data is stored in /sdcard. The external sdcard is /sdcard/external_sd for froyo, cant remember file path for 2.1. What else could you be wanting to transfer to the new phone?
From a phone
I've never done it before, I want to be able to transfer all data (ie, installed apps, cached notebooks for evernote, preferences, etc) to the other phone.
I have never done this before on an android phone and don't know the best way to tackle this using a cracked screen (can't even unlock the phone)
I think I can manage to do a nandroid backup ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEqbjUb4WxM ) but i'm concerned about the device id

There are 2 way i can think of.
1- Like mentionned in prior post do a adb pull /sdcard
2- Boot into recovery and try to a backup from there blindly (following online pictures/video of the different menus and pressing the buttons accordingly).
I don't see the big deal about your deviceid. Many users have had a auto generated id with roms. It will be ported with the nandroid. Not sure just how wide spread the use of deviceid is used in apps.
Thanks I was really confused about the whole DeviceID thing. Figured it was best to play it safe.
I'll give it a try, i'm sure i can manage to do a nandroid backup on my phone
I'll keep you posted
There are ways of getting your device id back. First of all theres a market app that can backup the device id on your new phone and restore it back after you restore the backup http://www.appbrain.com/app/android-id-changer/adaptive.cogid Or you could search around the forums and/or google for ways of changind and backing up your device id, there are multiple ways of doing it. And don't forget about backing up your sdcard, like boborone said, do an adb pull /sdcard from the clockworkmod screen (adb works from recovery in case you didn't know).
Hell man, you can adb pull the whole phone if you want.
From a phone
Can you send the link to where i can find out how to do and adp full pull from the pc? The only instructions i'm seeing are for the android sdk (bit confused)
the sdk is downloaded to your pc, and then you run that command from a terminal/command prompt with the phone connected.

Thanks, the screencast helped, but i honestly think that 2 days before i did this, I turned off usb debugging (so i could use my phone as a hard drive)
I think that is why whenever i plug in my phone, it vibrates really hard and droid explorer doesn't find any devices. Suggestions?
