Search Rocks. You can find it in the upper right hand.
oh i thought that was a rooter. so that file contains the stock froyo kernel that undoes all the stuff custom kernels replace?
Actually that's not stock froyo kernel. That's .34 and stock is like .32. Anyway, Just reflash your Rom zip file from recovery.

I am using the newest cog Tom and would like to be able to use a kernel that enables oc/UV and the different lagfix options. Can anyone tell me how I flash just the kernel over the cog Tom?

i wasnt aware that unhelpful had created a 2.2 kernel?
so what you want to do is flash a 2.1 kernel into a 2.2 rom? are you sure you have read the dev forums?
If there it is a 2.2 kernel, just flash the stock 2.1 kernel with odin and flash the one you want over (sorry vague) but just search it
*edit*
Its on the cognition wiki

i know how to flash a kernel, but the OP stated they were on the latest COG which is 2.2. unhelpful's kernel is a 2.1 kernel. flashing a 2.1 kernel on a 2.2 rom will end in boot loops....it wont be pretty.
the only kernel that i know of at this time for us to use OC/UV on 2.2 is setiron's, and its a modified i9000 kernel.
rather than trying to get someone else that has already done the legwork on learning ODIN to respond, I think the OP needs to read...a lot
I have been reading alot and can't seem to find a direct description on how to do this.

probably because you havent provided enough information....
i will repeat.
if you try to install unhelpful 2.1 kernel on a 2.2 rom, it WILL NOT work.
so, are you trying to do this on a 2.1 rom or a 2.2 rom?
there are plenty of instructions out there, so you havent read enough.....there are really only 2 ways to flash a kernel. through Clockworkmod or through ODIN.....pick your poison.
If you flash cog 2.1.7 you will have unhelpfuls kernel version 1.7 but i prefer version 1.4.1 despite the lack of voodoo lag fix. It just worked better on my phone. Great battery life.
overclocking may not be enabled at first so read unhelpfuls first post first if you dont get it ask more questions.
If you flash a cog 2.2bx 2.3bx or 2.4.x rom then you are looking for setirons kernel. It has more advanced lagfix options but i get battery drain so the undervolt thing is useless. There is a way to fix it but its too much to explain.
All in all overclocking is mostly for bragging rights. On ecliar it was good using unhelpfuls kernel.
Setirons kernel may be very advanced but there are tradeoffs it being an i9000 port.

Hi,
I currently have my phone running Cognition 5 v2 ROM. I wanted to try out CyanogenMod 7, which I understand is 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 based, just like Cognition 5.
What's confussing me is that the installation instructions of CM7 are asking the installation to be from Froyo/Eclear Bootloaders, while for Cognition I had to install GB bootloaders.
Why is that?
Finally, can someone point me to a post that helps me revert the bootloader and ROM to stock?
Regards,
Mauricio
The OP for CyanogenMOD hasn't been updated. You can install cm7 with the gingerbread bootloaders now and will work with no issues. You may have to download the cm7 from the link rather than Rom manager, though I am not positive on that as I don't remember how I downloaded it. Move the cm7 zip onto your sdcard along with the GAPPS zip. Reboot into recovery and manually flash them both. If you have an issue go back out to recovery and flash it again and it should work with no issues.
I THINK the issue with going from DGs ginergerbread is that it uses a different version of clockworkmod recovery or at least that is how it seemed when I did it. This is how I did it from Cog5 gingerbread. Then I decided to try biffmod. (This is my secondary captivate, backup). Good luck.

Umm i wouldnt do that. Doesnt cognition have voodoo lag fix, it will screw up ur partions and might soft brick

Yeah I would Odin back to 2.2 (the one without bootloaders), then go go cm7. The i897 bootloaders work fine with cm7.

Even if you follow the threads linked above, you arent going to get very far with ROM Manager. they havent supported the captivate since it was on 2.1 eclair I believe. Learn to use ODIN.

-_- OMG I tried to be nice. You don't ODIN CWM. You ODIN a kernel that contains CWM injected into the kernel itself. I recommend CORN kernel and KK4 custom or stock ROM

I recommend you do a lot more reading of the resources available throughout the Captivate section before flashing anything, with ODIN or without.
I just bought a captivate. I rooted and unlocked it ( now t- mobile) . When I go to rom manager to make a recovery it doesn't recognize my device. Only gives option for i9000, epic, fascinate. What do I need to do to make a backup/ recovery?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
Unfortunately there isn't an official clockworkmod recovery for the captivate. You'll need to either flash a kernel with cwm already embedded, or manually load up cwm on your SD card. What stock ROM are you on atm?
Sent from my AOKP icy-glitched Captivate via Tapatalk 2
Sorry you sorta wrong on some things. There isn't official CWM for GB or Froyo. But there is for Eclair. Sounds like he is on GB at the moment. You are correct about having to flash a kernel with CWM in it.
I stand corrected...but yes unless your still on eclair or restore back to eclair, there isn't an official cwm

Yea, I am on GB 2.3.5 baseband UCKK4. I also have a vibrant.I am really surprised at how different the two phones are. I would like to put a custom rom on the cappy. What rom would you suggest? Kernel?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
Suggesting ROMs ins't allow because you will most likely get arguing. Flash Corn Kernel and try out some custom stock ROMs if you don't know what you're doing. If you have an idea. I suggest ANY of the ICS ROMs
I would like a stable ICS rom. PM me with any suggestions.

vcremoveboot is the revert zip for voltage control, in case you have unstable settings applied at boot.
Hey guys, my friend has a i900 running 2.2.1 froyo. He hates how it is always freezing and wants me to root it and put CM9 on it. I swapped sim cards with him and did a nandroid on mine so i can restore after. So i have his phone
I was wondering is the process to get Cm9 running is the same as coming from gingerbread.(thats what my phone came with 2.3.4)
On mine i:
Flashed CF root with ODIN,
Booted into recovery and flashes Cm9 and an approprite kernel.
Just wondering if i can follow the same procedure as before. Help is appreciated, i dont want to mess this up.
Thanks.
Just upgrade to gingerbread using Odin...root with appropriate kernel using Odin...flash latest cm9 nightly in cwm...check out slim 4.1 as well.

All i need is recovery mode anyway.

I don't believe you can go to Cm9 from froyo...you maybe right but all the info you need is in the links I provided. I'm sure you'll find you're answer in the cm9 thread.
I gave it a quick look and it doesn't mention gingerbread. But if it were me I would since it might be more difficult to dig up a kernel for froyo

I don't actually need the kernel to boot though. I just a recovery to flash the Rom. Would that work?

You need gb bootloader to get onto cm9, as far as I'm aware, hence the need

I see you have an i9000m and on Virgin - franchisee of Bell.
Follow these instructions
[HOWTO] Flashing CWRecovery to i9000m & upgrade to ICS AOSP 4.x ROM from any version
Branch off to whatever ICS rom you want.
You'll definitely need to be using the cm7-kg3 modem for any ICS rom going forward. That means after every new ROM flash you'll have to flash the KG3 modem. Once you are upgrading within a ROM, you won't have to re-flash the modem each time.
If you use a firmware from the first link I gave you there are firmware. with bootloaders.
The links contain everything you need...firmware....kernel to get cwm....Cm9....and radio zip

Thanks guys, im going for it pretty soon here. You guys are awesome.
For the first time in my life, kies just connected to a phone. I cant handle it. I think im gonna pass out in disbelieve.
Anyway... lol.
Can i just update to gingerbread kg3 from kies?
Yes, but you may have a difficult time finding a kernel with cwm for kg3.
×Slim Rom×
and now i cant get into recovery mode. Just download mode. I downloaded the stock firmware from samfirmware, and was gonna flash it with odin, but which file to i put it under? Its just a single tar ball
EDIT: For some reason i have to use power volume up AND down and home. Wierd.
I always use firmware from the link I gave you...just flash jw5 from link with 512 pit....then root with semaphore 2.7.4.tar from second link....easy.
×Slim Rom×
I will try that now. Cause im bootlooping with CF root.
After that you can flash cm9 in cwm...additionally slim 4.1...then slim common....then the Kg3 modem zip in cwm as well.
