currently using superE, i have used ALL the current builds with the exception of superHero. went NAND about a week ago. wanting to be able to USE some of the themes- is there an installer? or how do they work?
1) Find the theme you wish to download and, well, download it. The file downloaded needs to be in a .tar format (usually called androidupdate.tar).
2) Take the androidupdate.tar file and put it in the ANDBOOT folder on your SD card.
3) Soft reset your phone and hold down the center button on the d-pad during boot to get to the menu.
4) Select Option 4 - Install Update.
5) Let the installer do it's thing. When it is completed you will be brought back to the installer menu.
6) Soft reset the phone once more and enjoy your new theme.
That should do it for you!

ok now i am just bamboozled.... i know i am not the most knowledgeable at this but aren't these the same directions to load a new android rom? not trying to be combative just thoroughly confused by now.
thanks again
Installing a ROM would be Option 1 - Install System.
Themes are applied via Option 4. When you select #4 the installer unpacks the androidupdate.tar file and overwrites existing files on your phone's NAND to apply the theme. If you choose install system (#1) it wipes the phone and uses a file called androidinstall.tar to reinstall (different file from androidupdate.tar).
So, basically once you install your ROM on NAND all updates, themes, etc will be need to be installed via Option 4.
Itd be a good idea to add this to the FAQ- I didnt know this either
thanks for the help much apprecited

I cannot find the update for non custom firmware phones and I am tired of waiting for OTA. Anybody have the file?
so just root and download a custom rom and install that. it takes a grand total of 20 minutes.

Thank you so much!
Umm.. it was rooted and now I am going back.
how to
need instructions on how to execute this
1. rename the file to update.zip (make sure thats all, not update.zip.zip. for example, if youre looking at it on your desktop and all it says is "TMO cupcake", do not rename it update.zip, just rename it update.)
2. put the update.zip on your SD card (NOT IN A FOLDER)
3. Reboot your phone into recovery mode (power off then hold home+power)
4. when you see a screen wits a triangle on it, you're there. open your keyboard and hit alt+s. when it finishes, it should automatically reboot. if not, you can reboot manually.
5. you're updated to cupcake. enjoy.
*Update: These instructions now seem to be outdated. I will started an updated thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=648045

(sorry I tried to post some live links, but the forum won't allow them cause I'm a new user, so this may not be as helpful as I hoped...)
I just spent some hours wading through the forums to find complete instructions for installing the newer android builds using the WM haret.exe linux booter (rather than flashing the entire phone and loosing WM) on my touch Vouge.
I am a bit of a newb, but since I did not find complete instructions, and had to figure some things out using trial and error I thought I would post what I did figure out here in hopes of helping others.
First ignore the install instructions here. sourceforge.net/apps/trac/androidhtc/wiki/HowToInstall . They are old and need to be updated.
Erase all previous android files from your sd card
Go here: sourceforge.net/projects/androidhtc/files/
haretinstall.zip
open the zip and place the andboot folder and all its contents on the / directory of your SD card
then download eclair252_androidinstall.zip
unzip eclair252_androidinstall.zip to get androidinstall.tar
copy androidinstall.tar to your sdcard /andboot folder
(unnecessarily steps deleted - see below)
Then on your phone's file explorer run haret.exe from /andboot folder on you sd card
click run and immediately hold the volume switch up as linux boots
the boot menu appears. choose install
if the installation hangs hold volume up again, and choose quit
As I said I'm new at this, so my instructions may be off or misguided. If so please post with corrections. I just know I was looking for a guide like this and couldn't find one so hope this helps someone.

Actually, you just answered my question (which I never posted) about NoRootFS.... Thanks for posting this!!!!
THANK YOU!!!
can you explain what is the benefits of doing it this way compared to the way its always been for me. it was as simple as downloading the sqsh package zip file from my favorite build here. witch included all the files i needed to run anroid. I copied the android folder from the zip file to the root of my sd card and simply ran haret exe. It used to be complicated but not now that most builds include all the basefiles needed for boot. I never had to hold any volume buttons or install anything. i probably look dumb for asking this.

Although I have not yet tried myself because I have a Polaris and WiFi is not yet working, my understanding is that NoMoRootFS makes more space available for the ROM and makes it easier for developers to roll out updates. In the thread for Myn's (most excellent) Warm Donut, there are several themes and updates that can only be applied to Rev2 if you have installed via NoMoRootFS.

correct. with the OP method, the .nbh file is just taking up space. you never need to do anything with a .nbh file if you are using haret. OP, please fix and I will add to my list of FAQs, otherwise very informative. thx.

Did you get into the install menu by holding volume up? easiest and quickest way to help you is if you describe exactly what you did - I know it is similar to the OP, but just give a step by step in your own words.

Did didn't get past the Linux menu. It only ran for about 4 or 5 seconds then locked up. I had to soft reset to get my phone functioning again.
I did exactly what the instructions in the 1st post said to do.
Downloaded andboot file to \storage card\andboot
Downloaded androidinstall.zip & placed in the andboot file
Clicked haret.exe
Selected run while holding up the volume key
I read in the post that the below items were not necessary so I skipped them:then download vogueeclairnbh.zip
unzip vogueeclairnbh.zip to get VOUGIMGx480.NBH
copy VOUGIMGx480.NBH to your sdcard /andboot folder
I'm running stock rom. My carrier is nTelos (CDMA).
I notice that your rom version and radio version are not the latest. You may have to ungrade those before you can get it to run.

always good to have latest radio. i don't know if it will interfere with you booting linux, usually it creates problems with gps or data once you are in android. but who knows, anything is possible I suppose.

I've always wanted to update me ROM but there is not a Server cab out there that will give me back my settings for nTelos. Its a small cell network therefore no one has bothered to create one (I really can't blame them). So I've never tried it out of fear of Bricking my phone. For some reason nTelos did not offer WiFi, GPS or MMS with this phone through their network (didn't know that until AFTER I bought it). They have it for other phones but not this one for some reason. That was a little annoying when I 1st got it but I've leaned to live without it. I love my phone even w/o those things. I get pics emailed to me & can email them to other's phone through their carrier address (eg [email protected]). WiFi would be nice but I never use GPS. As far as the Radio. I assume it sort of the same step. I pretty much have to install it & it will wipe out or "Hard Reset" my phone, right...causing me to losing all my network info?
Here are the files I have in the andboot folder:
androidinstall
default
haret
initrd
READE-BASEFILES
zImage
zImage-eclair
** I could not file the "eclair252_androidinstall.zip" file to download so I downloaded the androidinstall.zip under the "2010-01-05" folder from sourceforge.net/projects/androidhtc/files/. Could that be the problem or could it be a combination of my Radio/ROM & the androidinstall tar I downloaded?
Thanks for the help guys!

you should be able to update your radio without touching your rom, there is a radio only version of 3.42.50, see the faqs noob guide to flashing, it is in there.
I am unsure what you downloaded; it looks like you have the right basefiles, but if you got androidinstall.zip from 2010-01-05 I don't think it will have anything compatible with the norootfs method, and is probably causing your problem.
delete androidinstall.tar, download this and drop the androidinstall.tar that is inside into your sdcard/andboot/ folder. then run haret and keep holding volume up until you see the install menu. then post back.

OK. Same thing...phone locks up at the same place. I downloaded the file you attached & downloaded the VOGUIMG.nbh file that was linked on PPCGeeks. I followed the instructions on PPCGeeks post "This is the vogue radio 3.42.50 designed for the vogue (this is not the titan port). I removed it directly from the bell rom and recomplied it as a radio only .nbh. This is a radio only rom designed to be flashed from bootloader from sd card and doesn't require a hard reset. Copy VOGUIMG.nbh to root of fat32 micro sd card 2gb or less and place phone in bootloader and it will run."
I still get the same outcome. Both your attachment & the VOGUIMG.nbh file are located \Storage Card\ on my phone. When the Radio instructions say its designed to be flashed from Bootloader what exactly does that mean? Do I need a program for that or is it suppose to start when I Run the default.txt after I select haret in the andboot folder?
the place you got the link to the radio only version also has instructions on how to flash your phone - see the before starting area. short: get into bootloader mode, then flash.
I still think there is something else that you are doing wrong, I just can't put my finger on it right now; i'm hoping others will be able to help.

Hey all, I'm currently in RA after flashing the recovery image , and I'm trying to install the FRESH rom on there but for some reason when I try to "Flash zip from sdcard" it's telling me "No zip files found." Why is that? I have the whole zip folder placed in the main SD card, so why is it telling me it's not found?

I responded to you on http://GeekFor.Me, but the reason is because RA looks in the root of sdcard, the zips can't be inside of any folders.
So does that mean I have to take out all the individual files and place them directly into the root of the sdcard? Because I just basically copied the download folder and dropped it into the root. Thanks for the reply

You need to leave the files in a .zip, but yea that zip needs to be on the root of the sdcard.
The only file you need to install the rom is fresh-cdma-hero-20d.zip (for fresh rom 2.0d). Any other zips are just addons or tweaks or whatever they may be.

Hmm, I'm on a Mac and maybe it's me but the link I download from gives me an actual folder rather than a zip. And when I rename the folder to a zip, it gives an error. Is there a mirror link to download an actual zip folder?
Boogie when you download it dont opening after it finishes downloading .. just use the finder to navigate to where its at and then copy that to your sd .. when you open it on a mac it will automatically create the extracted folder .. hope this helps ...
Sounds like your using Safari to download it. To make this easier in the future go to Safari > Preferences > General and make sure that "Open safe files after downloading" is NOT check-marked.
Safari is unpacking the zip file for you. The file you want is in your trash bin, drag it to the root of your SD card and that's it..
Ok I'm gonna give it another go. Since I made it all the way through to the RA stage, there's no reason I shouldn't be able to flash the rom is there?
Thanks for all the help everyone I finally got it to flash the FRESH rom, but once I rebooted it, it's still in the "HTC" branded screen. Is it loading? It's not going anywhere but this screen, although I know it's doing something because the animation shine is moving.

After flashing a new ROM, it can take up to 10 minutes or so to load.
Nice Everything is all good! Now my last question is how do I get the removed apps from the ROM back onto here? I actually prefer to have some of those programs back onto the phone.

There is a link in the release notes to download all the removed apk's from Fresh Rom. You will then need to use adb push to push them back to /system/app. Search for how to setup adb on a mac as I honestly don't know.
im trying to flash paragon rc5. i follow the instructions, but when i go to choose sd card... and click on paragon.zip as file to use in clockwordmod recovery manager, it loads okay, then says replacing recovery manager and reboots. what did i do wrong?
To flash rom you should boot into recovery, select ingersoll zip from sd, choose zip, select parogon, confirm, done
Well when i do, it acts like its going to install, but then says "replacing recovery manager with clockwork..." then exits and reboots into the normal recovery screen.
Each time i get into recovery it is the normal one. I have to go to reinstall packages to get to the clockworkmod one. Something tells me thats not right.
Could this have happened because i installed rom manager and it didnt say i needed it?
Sounds like you are flashing an update.zip to get clock work recovery. i think you need to confirm you downloaded the correct file
What happened was i installed rom manager, got recovery manager through it, then downloaded paragon and its update.zip file. So am i basically flashing the recovery manager right now?
Sounds like it, are you on stock?
Paragon rom zip should be like 170mb in size
Rooted, but otherwise stock. Have already wiped all my data on it in preparation.
What im trying to do is this- have update.zip and paragon.zip in main internal sd folder. Go into recovery---reinstall---then it loads clockwork, then go to from sd---choose--- and if i pick paragon.zip it still does it.
let me clarify this, basically you do not need rom manager here.
1. download the update.zip and put it in your sdcard root folder;
2. download the rom file (170mb one) and put it in your sdcard; not necessary to be the root folder;
3. suppose you are on the stock rom; shut down your phone and use key combo to get into recovery mode;
4. apply the changes (i remember it is the second option), you may need to do it twice. you should now be in the cwm;
5. use the menu in the cwm to browse and install the rom file
6. reboot your phone. done.
Boot phone up normally. Delete paragon file you have. Redownload. Like I said the file should be like 170mb.
Update.zip goes in the root folder? Where is that? I couldnt find it anywhere....
The file is about 170mb. I know thats correct, im thinking since i had already installed cwm i moght have screwed up.
when you select reinstall packages you should go into green recovery/clockwork recovery.
If that works boot phone, open rom manager, select install rom from sd, select paragon
check the attached file.
Thats the update.zip i have. Now where do i put the damn thing?
Your internal sd card. Dl to phone, go to my files app, open dl folder find file select copy, click paste. Should now be where you need it

also rename the bootanimation to what yours is named either ATT_bootanimation.zip or bootanimation.zip
Here is how I did it.
1. Download the .zip to your desktop and rename this file to the file that your device uses. (I use ATT, so I navigated to system, customize, resource, and that's where I saw my boot animation and it was, ATT_bootanimation.zip
2. Mount the disk so you can open the external sd drive on your computer
3. Moved the .zip file from the desktop to the external sd drive
4. I use Rom Toolbox, but use a root explorer and copy the bootanimation zip file from your external sd card, to your devices bootanimation file, It will ask if you want to overwrite or keep both files, but you MUST overwrite. Reboot phone and it should work. If that doesn't then try and install it from your recovery and you might have to delete the cache, but try that.
I do recommend backing up the phone and the current rom though...Just incase
Is there a specific place to go where i can download different boot animations for the vivid as well as preview them before downloading?
There are boot animation threads...
Trial and error as far as what works...
Our screen is 960x540
Anything smaller COULD work

You can always try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678540&highlight=sense
You have to download them first but it lets you see what it will look like.
Don't overwrite your ATT_bootanimation.zip file just rename it ATT_bootanimation.bak (or just bootanimation.bak if your original bootanimation file is named just bootanimation). This way if you can't get it to work then you can delete the file that dosen't work and go back to your original file by putting the .zip back.
Try install boot animation factory

I'd love to try Annimation Factory but it requires Win SP3. I only have/use the laptop my company gives me and they control what SP are installed with an iron fist and we are only on SP1. I really need to build a new box. I"m still working on doing it the old fashion way as discribed in the OP's document.
EDIT - FYI - I installed Annimation Factory and it works just fine on SP1. One thing that I have noticed every time I open it it prompts me there is a new version even when turning off the check for updates in settings. When I try to download the new version it gives a downloader error. I don't think this is related to SP1. The AF version I have works good though. I'll go and get the new version manually.
