thanks works great, it will connect to N even with my router set to mixed mode. so it looks as if it prefers N but if it isn't there it connects to G. just how I want it.
While this is connecting at a faster speed, I am not seeing improved distance...
Can anyone confirm?

108mbps (fastest pre-N speeds, AFAIK) is much slower than internal bus processor/memory speeds, not to worry. Only full-speed Gigabit lan is a challenge to a modern PC's bus/memory bandwidth, and we ain't nowhere near that, brotha

The processor is not a bottleneck. If you really want to see what kind of throughput is possible, you can download my iPerf app from the market to test with. See my wiki page for details on how to use it at magicandroidapps.com.
Maximum TCP throughput on 11g is 25Mbit/S. For single-stream 11n, you should be able to go faster than that. Give it a try and post your results.
Remember that for "internet" speed tests, WiFi is not the bottleneck, so using iPerf on your local network, with the iPerf server connected to your AP's Ethernet port is the way to get accurate results.

Hey quick question, what kind of test can I do on phone to test the speed of the connection?
I KNOW that a pc vs phone is different, but when I go to speedtest.net, Phone gets 12.**Mbps while PC gets 21.**. Same location, distance from router, time, etc...

I just loaded my AT&T version with cyanogen 5.0.5.3, and the wireless tether app does not work.
No matter the security settings I use, it always shows unsecure network on my laptop (OSX, Ubuntu and Vista).. If I set it to unsecure in the app, it still does not connect.
I have never used it before, but I am assuming the cyanogenmod kernel has the required bits for the app to work properly.
Am I missing something stupid?

you may want to adb push method or adb install -r method instead. reboot after install. or try my rom linked in signature.
if you don't know how to use sdk's adb, do a search here on xda for one of the many basic tutorials or ask for details.

OK, installing with adb has the same effect.
There are posts from the google code pages where this has happened in the past (last year though), so I doubt related..

This is with WEP set.. It must have something to do with wpa_supplicant somewhere.. I'll keep digging...
maybe it might have something to do with atnt not able to do it throught there network. like us tmobile users can use data while on the phone? dont know alot but that could be a possibility
Nah, wpa_supplicant is not negotiating wep for some reason. I just replace the wpa_supplicant.conf file with a very generic open key WEP config and it still does not work..
I need to dig through my broadcom nda's and find this chip, and see if I can use the firmware.. I'll just load it up in AP mode and run hostapd and be done with it....
Ad-Hoc just plain sucks, almost as much as wep...

Regarding wep-encryption & CM 5.0.5.x:

So, wep-encryption is broken (no idea why) on the latest cyanogenmod-build. Please use CM 5.0.4.1 - it works flawlessly there.
I will take a closer look the next days ... but it's hard to tell what is causing this - I don't know which changes were made on CM.

This is definitely an issue which needs to be solved and should stay in development!
Thanks - I googled for quite a while, and never came across that info. Tethering is not that critical (unless I am travelling), so I will just wait for a fix sometime.

I've installed 5.0.5.3 and downgraded the kernel which came with 5.0.4.1 - and it start working again! So, I would say that this issue is related to the latest kernel (2.6.33.1)!

i have wifi tether pre 8 on latest CM mod and its working great, wep works, and no errors in log.
I am having the same problem. I have both a nexus one and motor milestone. Tethering on milestone doesn't have problems but my nexus can't seem to connect as well no Sep security. I can see the my SSID, anyone can help?
There are obviously factors that differ between devices somehow. I too can change kernels and the issue goes away. Something is "missing" somewhere. A git pulled vanilla 2.6.33 kernel works just fine when booting the zimage from fastboot..
I have not looked at the cyanogen .config or wireless module source yet to see any modifications that would effect it...
I'm more interested in the module working in AP mode now that the driver supports it, and have been working on that...

First of all, Linux and OS X come with sqlite3 by default. Windows users will need to download the executable. With that said, here is how you can enable sideloading the old-fashioned way.

If I am not mistaken gdanko doesnt use any of those operating systems. He uses a mac...

I guess the check box is not added, but superoneclick did do its job. The phone is communicating with the laptop as expected.

Fails on Ubuntu 64. And installing mono and a host of other things for something so trivial is pointless.

All the information is readily available, all you need to do is look for it. There's several threads on the first page of the development forum (which you found as you're posting in it) that contain the information you need. One of the threads is even clearly labeled: "[HOWTO] Easy Root 1.5.7 using GingerBreak"
So sorry, I get a little short with people who ask questions that are already answered. Don't take it personally. Here's the breakdown:
There's currently 2 methods of root, one is GladRoot, which requires you to downgrade first. The other is GingerBreak, which formats your phone data. Pick your poison.
Verizon's third 4G Android smartphone is out today. I think that it is worth having a separate for development here, eh?

How hard was it to root? Was the bootloader unlocked or just an easy unlock?
I was trying to decide between the Thunderbolt and the Revolution(not a samsung fan).
LG doesn't seem or want to lock anything down! Hurrah!
How is the battery life on that phone compared to the thunderbolt? Better, worse, or indistinguishable?
This device was so easily rooted. Time for the custom ROM's for this device...

Download the SU binary
Move these files to the same directory your adb.exe is in.
Open Command prompt (either use the Windows Key+R and type cmd or start/run, then type cmd)
32-bit users: >cd c:\program files\android\android-sdk\platform-tools
64-bit users: >cd c:\program files (x86)\android\android-sdk\platform-tools
Or >cd (whatever directory adb is in)
>adb devices (verifies you are connected)

(if the above command fails due to read-only, type 'adb user' then 'adb root' to validate root status, then 'adb devices' again to verify connection)

Verify the file is in place w/correct permissions

At this point, you may way to remove the files you put in /data/local/temp (optional):

From what i've been told, yes it does... newest version using the gingerbreak exploit. (gingerbreak app does not work)

LG Revolution Root the Windows ADB way
Played with this device and actually thinking about procuring it. After all, since rooting is so easy, wifi tethering should be easy to procure and with 4G blazing fast.

That's good to hear! I will voice my support for a Revolution forum. I'm loving the device so far - it's a solid phone that seems to be more than the sum of it's specs, and honestly I like the hardware build more than my OG Droid.

Its definitley a solid device.
I upgraded from the Droid1 to this, and this phone is great! Loving it so far. I don't know if I want to go the custom rom route with this phone, but it would be nice to have some developer interest and some options down the road. I sure hope the Rev picks up interest because it really is a good device. With that said, I think the Rev having its own section can only help to increase awareness and interest in this phone.

I went from a G2x to the Charge and finally settled on a Revolution. I guess I was just spoiled by those phones having their own forums... I am totally lost now... no home. Anyways, yes there is interest.

How my hack works
For international devs who want an idea of how I did it (before stevendeb25's tutorial & release) the following details my mount_ext3.sh:
Loopback hack only loads if you fastboot menu to early USB enum, so, run if ro.usb_mode==debug (plus helps us debug to adb early... why /system/etc/rootfs/default.prop we copy to / has ro.secure=0 & persist.service.adb.enable=1) In addition to default.prop we copy, extracted files from GB's ramdisk:, /init, /init.rc (modified, comment out mounting /system) and ueventd.rc from etc/rootfs, plus symlink /sbin/ueventd->/init.
Next, mknod and mount /preinstall rw, where we keep taskset, 2nd-init and busybox binaries, as well as system.img (CG60 from hktw 2.3.4 sbf.) It's probably already in /dev/block/ but this varied across froyo builds so mknod and mount rw to be safe. Good idea to use /preinstall/busybox from now on as /system mount dis/appears.
e2fsck -y the system.img and then losetup the loopback mount, umount -f -l /system, and mount -t ext3 <loopbackdevice> /system. For debug cat out /proc/mounts to a file in /preinstall or /data, actually I also append ">>/preinstall/debug 2>&1" to every command. Finally, now you can (taskset) 2nd-init your new system!
Unfortunately, seems necessary to fastboot -w or just rm -r /data/* between boots of froyo and GB. Annoying, but I couldn't easily get a GB-only /data mounted.
Now, can you fix the input flip left-right after lock screen? Clues are: it doesn't happen if this trick is tried on GB kernel (with Froyo ramdisk, system, and same 2nd-init trick.) Also, it persists after warm reboot, GB->GB. Pulling in /system/lib/hw from Froyo didn't help. Tho you'll want to bring back (and insmod) aev.ko, evfwd.ko, plus revert dhd.ko to Froyo version, as the first two are in-kernel on GB, and the latter seems to differ. I am fairly confident most bugs can be fixed by replacing (lock screen? nvrm_daemon?) pieces of GB userspace with Froyo versions in system.img. I just lost a bit of ambition after finding the fastboot oem unlock in the BL plus I will be away for a bit.

Other way around... if you pull in dhd.ko from the latest Froyo build you flashed on your system, as well as aev.ko and evfwd.ko (and /system/etc/firmware or wifi/ ?) into loopback mounted /system you will have more chance of working wifi in HKTW2.3.4. (HINT HINT you could do this directly in the mount_ext3.sh script... copy useful 2.2 stuff to /preinstall, copy back into new /system after unmount,remount, even insmod if you have to...)
Remember, this trick produces a mismatch between /system version (GB,2.3.4) and kernel version in boot.img which is actually running. We can take care of ramdisk post-hoc before 2nd-init but older kernel and its API is still in place so pieces of HKTW userspace will have to be replaced/modded to fix bugs. This version of mount_ext3 is an early release for the hackers who want to tinker until it works... good luck! I will have only web and ssh access off and on for 10 days but can answer any questions by PM, on IRC or here..

Alright, so this is a guide to finally get the backtrack 5 software running inside of webtop. It uses chroot and xterm to allow full access to the software contained within the backtrack 5 arm image.
Prerequisites:

Give it a go:
Step 0: Connect the phone to display/lapdock. Run webtop and wait for it to boot.
Step 1: Open LXTerminal from the dock and type "cd /sdcard/bt"
Step 2: To run BackTop type "sudo bash backtop"
You should be presented with a white xterm screen. You can now use all the utilities built into backtrack 5 with ease. You can even run the gnome desktop environment! (More on that bellow)

Running Gnome:
You first need to kill off all the webtop crap do this by typing the following in xterm.
"ps ax|grep awn|awk '{print $1}'|xargs kill"
"ps ax|grep panel|awk '{print $1}'|xargs kill"
Then start gnome by typing "gnome-session" in xterm.

Accessing sdcards:
You'll need to make two directories inside of backtrack /sdcard and /sdcard-ext to do this type:
"sudo mkdir /sdcard"
"sudo mkdir /sdcard-etc"
Once you've done this simply reboot your phone and restart BackTop.

Known issues:
ettercap causes network connectivity inside of webtop to fail.
If something does go terribly wrong you can always force quit backtop with the following command:
"sudo bash /sdcard/bt/forcekillbt"

7z issue with the bt.7z
Hum... I might be doing something wrong but I am not able to uncompress the 3 volumes posted in the links... I was able to download them all but the only one who actually I can uncompress is the first one and it generate a file bt.7z that I am also unable to uncompress... I am getting the following msg when I try to 7unzip them:
"cannot open file 'x:\xx\xx\bt.7z.002' as archive"
Should I join them all into one then use 7zip?
Forget it I just found it out by myself... is using a program to join them all into one then Unzip it.
My dream come true .............. i assume that we can run kismet and metasploit framework ?!
What kernel and rom were you able to make this run well with as i am having really bad reboots after i undock the phone from the lapdock as i am running faux123 kernel and cherry crust v3.
webtop when connected to hdmi not doing anything...
I was trying to use this backtrack distro on my AT&T Atrix and I must admit that I am a kind of noob on this ... I wasn't seeing big advantage until now that we have bt to use instead of the stock version...
I have no Lapdock so I am using Ronaldo_9 CWM version to run Webtop on HDMI in my GB 2.3.4 ( 4.5.91 from Kenneth Penn ). It was working til I followed these instructions ...
Well a little bit of what I did:
1- Downloaded the WebTopMOD from Joe Ferreira v2 to install with CWM.
2- Got also BusyBox installed through the BusyBox Installer over my /system/bin
3- Downloaed (even knowing it's not needed) the Debian disk from Joe Ferreira link (to install webtopmod).
4- Downloaded the BlackTrack 5 image from the links on the first post
5- Downloaded the BackTop.zip from the first post
6- Created the /sdcard/bt folder and put only the bt.img and forcekillbt and backtop files from Backtop.zip file onto it...
7- Plugged in my HDMI cable over my tv (yes I have no lapdock)
8- The Webtop option pop's up and when I selected it.....
Nothing happened... not even an error msg or stuff... the only thing still working is EC... but webtop none.... Does anyone of you have any clue or hint of what can I do about it?
EDIT: Got it working... it was because of the broken V2 WebtopMOD so I flashed the V1 and everything went fine.... Thank you all for not helping it made me a better researcher
I think I just wet myself I've been waiting for someone to come up with this since they started the ARM archticture and ported it to the XOOM tablet

BCM4329 supports Promiscuous Mode and Multiple Monitor mode.
It supports Packet Injection, too.
The WiFi module needs to be modified for enabling these things... I'm currently working on GenTop, but after finishing that work I can take a look at it and see if I'm skilled enough to enable it on the driver.

Doing a simple (means not a complex one) research at Google it seens that there's no much of Monitor mode for android cell phones so far... not sure why if nobody cares or if it's not possible... but u got skill enough to give the last word

There is monitor mode for iPhone and itouch... not sure the reason why not for android :-(
