Guidance for full downgrade from Cyan 5.07 - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently had some issues with my rooted G1 with which I am currently running CyanogenMod 5.07 with Danger SPL, a 2.X radio, and custom recovery.
I contacted T-Mobile and got my replacement, but I want to be clear to downgrade correctly the SPL, radio, recovery, and rom all in the correct sequence, before I send this old one in.
Any help I would greatly appreciate.

Find the DREAIMG.nbh file and put it on your sdcard. Turn the phone off and boot it with camera+power. Select DREAIMG.nbh, let the phone do it's thing, and you're done. The nbh file contains the radio, spl, recovery, boot.img, and /system from RC29 and it automatically updates your phone. Easy to do or what?
EDIT: Only thing it doesn't change I think is the splash1 image, so fix that first if it says anything other then tmobile G1

I was 95% sure that was it, but I wanted to be absolutely positive. Because if I bricked being unsure, I would be sending in a phone not how I said it was when I got it replaced.. Then I would be looking at a $350 restock fee.
Thanks man, greatly appreciated.
EDIT: I have the default G1 screen, thanks! :]

HELP! ROgers Dream on T-Mo radio!

OK, I dont know how I managed to do this. But I have a rogers dream and here is what happened.
I rooted it, no problems.
Used it for a few days, great.
Saw a fellow with a dream theme that I wanted to install, so I applied the update.zip. Ooops! Not it won't boot past htc display.
Try wipe data from recovery and reload. Now wont boot past Rogers flash screen.
found what I thought was a Rogers Firmware dump/restore. Flashed it, OH OH Now I have a fully T-Mo G1 branded dream without 3G.
Got it up and running now, on that firmware. But I need to do 2 things:
No root. all the "tenetd"ing is not doing anything, I run commands and when I try to get to recovery I get and explanation point and phone image. (I do have R29)
No Rogers original DREAIMG.nbh with the radio.
HELP! I want to get this phone to the beginning and I am at a loss. Usually I would get rogers to replace, but the boot screen now has the T-Mo G1 boot. So that wont work.
I'm used to flashing WinMo left right and center. but I'm almost admitting defeat!
Try the new rooting method from Haykuro - It's in the dev section.
It should fix your problems ;-)

Thanks, got this thing rooted now. It's just a matter of getting the Rogers DREAIMG.NBH
I can now flash a roger custom rom, its the radio that needs to be put back because of the 850/1900 3G bands as opposed to the 1700 that this radio is looking for.

So your saying it's possible to run 3G on the Rogers network with a T-Mobile G1?
That's extremely odd because I flashed my T-Mobile G1 with a Rogers radio and I now have a $400 brick and a new Rogers dream lol. So I wouldn't try it until we find a way to unbrick these damn things....
Other way around. I have a Rogers G1 (850/1900 3G) and accidentally flashed it with TMo G1 V1.0 firmware. I thought it war Rogers Original, not Original as in first ever!
Anyway, got the radio from another Post, but I can not flash ANY rom and have it boot past the 2nd splash screen.
I now have a custom restore, fast boot, even a splash screen. But the only combo that makes this thing functional is to:
Flash with Dream RC29 DREAIMG.NBH
Install telnet and root it
Update the radio rom.
Boom, have 1.0 with 3G on Rogers! But that means I dont have all the cupcake updates (A2DP, Exchange, Video, etc etc)
And all because I wanted a bloody theme!
ALMOST makes me miss jailbreaking iPhones and loading custom WinMo! Almost!

So what's the problem then? You have RC29 + root, just install proper radio, bootloader, and custom firmware (in that order) from the rogers root thread. YOU'RE PRACTICALLY DONE! The radio firmware HAS NO EFFECT on the available 3G bands.
got it firgured
Your right, I loaded the latest radio, cyan's recovery, Spl 1.33, oem updated radio, and now running the palm pre-like theme (been through soooo many getting this running, I forget who wrote this one. Props to you). And now I'm typing from my restored dream.
Apologies if I sounded ignorant. But I have never played with this system or unix. I only installed and tried ubuntu 6 months ago and gave up. But a little trial and error and I'm getting there.
My final recovery procedure! Thank you for everyones help with their efforts on each part. And to allow me to create this frankenstien software bundle.
This is a summery, if someone wants me to write up a detailed how to let me know.
Root rogers original rom
Re-flash dreaimg.nbh from g1
When you boot up, you will only have edge. That's ok for now. Once your at the sign in screen. Hit menu, add apn. Now you can edit an existing or create new. Rogers settings : name: rogers. Apn: internet.com. username: wapuser1. Password: wap. Fido. Name: fido. Apn: internet.fido.ca. username & password are both fido. Set this as your default connection.
After you set up you account, download and install telnet from market. After this reboot (don't know if necessary, but it worked for me)
Follow the rooting instructions for the original G1. Not the rogers one.
Once done, go to the htc website and install/update to the latest radio. When you boot, you now have 3G!
Now update spl
Update recovery to cyan's
Now you can install any rom for the g1. As long as you do a wipe before! Very important. No rom has booted if this wasn't done before applying the update.zip, and everytime I had to start again.
This will change your splash screen to the TMo one, and I have not found the rogers original one. So if you do this, rogers will imediately know when you need warranty exchanges done. So I take no responsibility. It worked for me on mine, I won't promise it'll work on yours.
Oh, before I had started I did a nandroid back up. But everytime I tried to restore it, it would stop the boot at the first splash screen. So you can, but don't think it'll work for going back. Sorry.
Rogers original splash screen
From the HTC dream
I don't think it will kill your phone... but don't blame me
I just got it from a nandroid backup.

I have a similar situation:
I accidentally installed RC29 on my Rogers HTC Dream. I can tell when put a DREAIMG.NBH on the MicroSD card that it is trying to load it (when I boot to the Rainbow boot screen it first reads: "loading...", then it says: "Checking..." and finally: "Not Allow"). If I don't have a DREAMIMG.NBH file on the card it doesn't do that.
So, I'm guessing that what I need to do is find a DREAIMG.NBH that my phone WILL allow (or some other file that I don't know about - I've tried update.zip, boot.img and recovery.img and the "loading..." message just flicks on and off quickly). Could someone PLEASE tell me what I need to do to fix my issue?
Also, I can't boot the OS. I get to the welcome/setup screen but it won't let me proceed because it can't connect to the network to login to my Google account. So currently I can't boot either.

Restore phone SPL Radio etc

Hi Guys
I've been running Cyanogens images for some time without problem until last week. The G1 had frozen. I re-imaged and the apps would crash randomly every 10 seconds then it would reboot. I've tried a modded standard tmob image that is unclocked and it still crashes. I thought it was the SDcard so bought a new one. The exact same thing happens.
Searching the forums I cannot find the answer but how do I install the standard SPL, radio etc and in what order. I don't want to brick my phone before I return it.

first install the SPL and then radio afterwards ... if you try to do the radio first and you have the DangerSPL then you WILL brick
Does installing the RC7 NBH install the correct SPL?
My current thoughts are to do the SPL then the Radio then to the RC7 NBH file. Is this correct?

i think i also lost root as i no longer have spare parts and no superuser permissions,
i tried to root again with a down grade to ukrc7, when i try to enter the bootloader it comes up with the skateboarding droids, says no images found and go's back to the droid skateboarding again, then i cant do anything with the device!!

Could you explain a little better? So your phone is a UK G1, with 1.33.2005 SPL and you were running a Cyanogen Mod ROM, and then something weird happened?
If you're on 1.33.2005 SPL then it's a good thing your phone didn't take the NBH, your phone would have bricked. 1.33.2005 requires the 26i radio which gets downraded when reverting to RC7.

Its safe to Downgrade with the RC29 image as it replaces the radio AND the spl
Can you provide more details on the issue? How it happened/what you were doing?

Right, I've wiped my phone, formatted the sdcard so that all is on it is the files needed to update to cm!
The phone is running perfectly like a stock handset, but it won't let me root, when I type into telnet the code to apply the cm recovery image I get an mtd error, but it is still followed by the two ##
Have you tried using the root.apk app that helps to flash it? Search for it and maybe it can help you out

Trying to Root HTC DREAM: nightmare

Hello all. This isn't your usual noob rooting thread. I'm having some serious problems trying to root my phone, I need some professional help here. I literally have scoured every tutorial trying to figure this out, my phone has been down for two weeks. PLEASE help me out, I looked everywhere trying to fix this thing.
Here is my problem: Downgraded from 1.5 to RC29, but when I try and update from RC29 A) Rainbow/Serial0 B) When I try to go into the OS it hangs at the T-Mobile G-1 Screen (I have a Rogers Dream).
Here is where my phone is at now:
DREAM210 PVT 32B
HBOOT 0.95.0000
CPLD-4
RADIO-2.22.23.02
Sept 2 2008
I can access the recovery options, but I can't update. When I tried to access sqlite_stmt_journals it told me it couldn't cd there even though when I ls'ed it told me the directory existed.
Even when I thought I used update.zip and flashed to the newest version it still had the old T-Mobile on there. Please help, I'm desperate guys! Anything!
You guys are great, thanks in advance. I'll check this thread constantly. Regards.
I'm not sure how you are where you are.. (you must have been rooted at some point to install RC29; rogers phones won't install it without doing so.. however for many it boots into android more successfully)
It also sounds like you have a custom recovery as stock dream recoveries don't have ADB or console applications. In addition having 2.22.23.02 indicates you changed the radio after flashing RC29 (that may be the issue with boot.. but as Android 1.0 isn't that interesting we can leave the radio in question)
So here is some questions
1) is it stock recovery (has a /!\ image and you must use ALT+L to see the options) or a custom recovery; if a custom recovery can you give more info like is it RA or clockwork recovery
2) Where are you seeing sqlite_stmt_journals in adb with recovery booted or while stuck on the G1 screen? If the G1 screen maybe a 'adb logcat > out.log' will help attach said out.log to your post.
With this info I can try to help you find a way out of this mess.
Thanks - I appreciate the reply. It's been a strange path for sure. But I managed to escape the one I was in and into another one.
I managed to put AMON RA's 1.7.0 recovery on my phone, and upgrade to Android 1.6 (Cyanogen 4.2.15.1). My radio at that point was 2.22.19.26i (obvious mistake). But regardless it worked for whatever reason. Regardless.
I pumped straight through that (as in the instructions after flashing DangerSPL) to putting Cyanogen 6.0.0DS on, then the EB11 kernal (even though I wasn't sure if I needed it, but it said it you had a Rogers phone you should) and the tiny GAPPS. It said welcome to Cyanogen 6.0.0 in the recovery screen, but when I rebooted it still went to the T-Mobile G1 screen.
So i sasw my error with the radio, and went to switch it from the one I had to the correct one: 3.22.26.17 (as per the site). So I thought I should reflash the Danger SPL just to make sure I was clean to reapply the Cyanogen update after.
However, when I applied the 3.22.26.17.zip, and rebooted and held camera it just held at the t-mobile G1 screen. I waited for 10 minutes then had to pull the battery.
Now I can't boot into the phone, into recovery, or fastboot. What. a. mess.
Thanks in advance for the help, this really is a nightmare for me.

Your mistake was the EBI1 kernel -- you had an EBI0 radio, that means that you needed to use the (default) EBI0 kernel.
It said welcome to Cyanogen 6.0.0 in the recovery screen, but when I rebooted it still went to the T-Mobile G1 screen.

This is because CM doesn't change that image. It came with the NBH file you installed. Nothing to worry about. The reason it didn't boot is because you had the wrong kernel installed.

I'm trying hard to understand what you did... at this point, you had... 1.33.2005 SPL and 3.22.26.17 radio?
This is a valid pair, BUT, you had an EBI0 recovery installed and just switched to an EBI1 radio... and have the thing set to boot-recovery. This is an awkward spot to be in..... basically, since you had a 1.33.2xxx SPL installed, you should NOT have tried flashing radio through recovery -- you had a perfectly good FASTBOOT, and should have used THAT.
However, when I applied the 3.22.26.17.zip, and rebooted and held camera it just held at the t-mobile G1 screen. I waited for 10 minutes then had to pull the battery.
Now I can't boot into the phone, into recovery, or fastboot. What. a. mess.

This is an interesting spot you're in, I'm not sure how to resolve it. You appear to have an SPL and RADIO that are compatible, but are, nevertheless, bricked in a boot-recovery mode.
Following the update-radio cycle, the command field of the misc partition gets set to boot-recovery, with the parameter set to format the cache partition. Well, you have an EBI1 radio and an EBI0 recovery kernel, so recovery won't boot to finish its cleanup.
The reason I went from the 2.x radio to the 3.x radio is because on the walkthrough it said that the 2.x radio was for non-US whereas the 3.x radio was for Rogers dream customers. But something that might help:
If I plug in my phone via USB, it won't acknowledge it as either a Fastboot or Recovery/ADB device, but the computer does acknowedge it as an "Unknown USB device," while under Android Devices there is the Android Composite ADB Device... which says it cannot start because of Code 10. Windows 7 Pro, 64-Bit is my OS.
Would repartitioning or formatting the SD card do anything? Also, start+menu+end won't do anything either.
Thanks again folks for the help, I am in a situation here.
I'm stuck in 1.0 with some keys not responding like "s" and am stuck. Any chance this could be what I did?

[Q] How to downgrade from DangerSPL on ADP1?

Hello,
I was running CyanogenMod 6.x for a while, but my Android Dev Phone 1 just wasn't keeping up (and stuff was randomly breaking such as all camera-related apps force-closing), so I wanted to go back to JesusFreke's 1.5 ROM, which is what I had been using before I started using CyanogenMod back in the day. Stupidly, I just restored a Nandroid backup, and now things are really pretty broken (sometimes even calling doesn't work properly, market doesn't download anything, etc.).
I'm thinking what I did wrong is that I didn't change back from DangerSPL to... whatever I had before that, when I restored the old Nandroid backup of JF1.5. So can someone tell me how to do this? There is a guide on the CyanogenMod Wiki but that seems to apply only to T-Mobile G1 phones, whereas mine is an ADP1.
Where can I get the correct SPL I should use for the ADP1 when I want to install JF1.5? (Or is there even a "correct" one?) Do I need to downgrade/upgrade my radio?
Incidentally, my fastboot screen looks like this:
Code:
DREAM PVT 32B ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-1.33.2005 (DREA10000)
CPLD-4
RADIO-2.22.23.02
Apr 20 2009,15:30:43
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
i also have the adp1 but it doesnt matter because the only difference was the spl. as we have the same as others right now, our phone only differs with the backcover
i wouldnt go back to 1.5. just make a real clean wipe follow the instructions exactly and you are good to go.
if you are really sure that you want to go back, search for the downgrade (original rooting method) to rc7(UK)/rc30(us) i think and then head over to htc's website
there you find everything concerning adp updates and then tell you exactly how to proceed (although it's written in a weird way)
sorry but i'm too lazy to search the links atm...
EDIT:
Downgrade:
RC7 Firmware
1. Download and unzip the RC29 or RC7 image file. Copy the DREAIMG.nbh file to the SD card. (RC29 for US, RC7 is for UK)
2. Turn the device power off.
3. Hold Camera button, and press Power button to entry boot loader mode. You should see a gray/white screen with instructions to flash your phone with the update on your SD card. If you don't see that, make sure you followed the instructions properly.
As per the on-screen instructions, press the Power button to start upgrade procedure. DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO INTERRUPT THIS PROCESS. (when you interrupt or battery empty or sth similiar you will most likely end with a brick)
then you should be at android 1.0 or 1.1 not sure.
after that you head over to ADP1 Stuff like radio and system images
follow the instructions and everything should work out
Thanks. The reason I'm downgrading is because CM breaks my camera for some reason, and CM 6.x even caused my phone to fail to make calls about 75% of the time, which was not something I could accept for daily usage. My phone has actually had its screen smashed in in the past (I got it used) so I wouldn't be surprised if there's still some hardware damage somewhere, even though it was repaired by HTC (perhaps their testing isn't that thorough). 1.5 seems not to take my phone into territory where it starts getting ****ed up, so I think I'll stay away from CM until I get a new phone, maybe in another 6 months to a year
Anyway, I figured out what to do. I used fastboot to flash Engineering SPL, then flashed in the latest AmonRa recovery image and JF1.51 without any problem. The radio version was not an issue. Some guys in #cyanogenmod on freenode coaxed me into just doing it and not worrying about bricking... basically fastboot is magic and I don't see why you would ever use the recovery image to dao anything when you could do it with fastboot

Doesn't the NBH overwrite your SPL as well? If so, your method would remove my ability to use fastboot to install the images from the HTC site (or do anything else with fastboot until I had reinstalled a fastbootable SPL), right?
