does this need to be installed on all computers i use? or as long as the phone has this app?
It says just Phone, but at&t blocked it so you can't see it from the app store.
You can install it from within the PC app.
You should be able to run it without a PC app via Bluetooth once the app is on the phone, but I havn't tried it.

Yea, was using it with my Backflop, then when I got the Aria I pushed the phone software down and it worked first time. I have NOT tried it with Bluetooth tethering, only with wired tethering. It works over the adb bridge, so it works on most android devices.
It appears as though tethering IS available without the need for any modifications to your Aria. Install Easy Tether via wifi without the sim card, and apparently it works (still waiting on mine from FedEx).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=710593
Yup....works like a charm. Aria, new out of the box, removed SIM card, downloaded Easy Tether via wifi, and I'm on. Also, I was able to download all the apps that are "blocked" by ATT - no need for any crazy rooting or in depth programing. This is an amazing phone - very impressed so far.

When i open it up and start tethering it stays on the start tethering screen and says please wait... my macbook doesn't find the signal and i was wondering if there was a way to fix it... i am running the latest hero rom...
Should work fine if your rooted and using anetshare with the downloaded tether.
Ubuntu on the otherhand... That one I have to use proxoid and usb along with a config typed in, but least its working on linux now. Windows.. ahh I love how you know how to network with ease to adhocs..
What is anetshare?... is it an app or something else?
http://android.a0soft.com/?url=aNetShare.htm
Just gotta dl it and then let the tether download. I know back in the begining, Tetherwifi didnt work, but this one did. So I stick with what worked 1st. =)
You don't have to use anetshare to have wireless tether for root users to work.
what is another easy way to get wireless tethering working... i have tried the wireless tether app buy it hasn't worked for me and i am not sure how to fix it

So far I've heard that ATT is blocking us from EasyTether in the market. It looks like there are about 5 more tether programs that ATT is blocking as well. Is there anything else that they are blocking us from? Maybe we could make a list of them here. Not sure why they bother blocking them since its so easy to get around.
According to these posts, this seems to work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6910085&postcount=1
No, the apk linked to in the above post does not work.
Aw, sorry then.
Even if you install it, I think it still doesn't work. Some people are working on it, I believe.

I think this was mentioned in the forum but I was able to use easytether by taking out my sim card. Then downloading easytether through wifi with the sim card out. After the installation I put my sim card back in and everything worked fine.

I haven't tried to use it yet but I was able to download it from the marketplace by simply going into Airplane mode and then turning on Wi-Fi; I didn't have to remove my SIM or anything like that.

$10 and it doesn't even have bluetooth or wifi tethering? Am I missing something? We need to find some free ones that work.
I have installed PDANet and it was quite easy search the threads and you will find easy solutions to install your 3rd party apps.

Well, I wasn't really asking about tethering, theres lots of posts about that already. I was more wondering if there was anything besides tethering apps that att is blocking us from getting.
Not sure if they're blocking any other apps besides tethering ones, but a way to find out is you can install market enabler to get access to other service provider markets and download their apps.

As someone else suggested, if you put the phone in Airplane mode and turn on wifi, you can browse the market without the AT&T filtering same as if you removed the SIM card.

z4root was pulled from the AT&T market over the weekend.
You can check this out: ponack.net (can't link cause I'm new here, sorry)
Gives you rooting instructions and (if wanted) instructions for installing the Cognition ROM...of course you can substitute your fav ROM instead.

I use Google's wi-fi tether app. I just download the latest version from the interweb and install. Of course I am rooted and have sideloading fixed.

Download the Samsung one click root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739304&page=25 and download google's Wifi tether app or Barnacle wifi from market. If you can't find it in the market, you can use Market Enabler from the market to fool the market into thinking you are on TMobile.
Anything new on the tether without a root. Can't seem to find any of the programs that people talk about.
Thanks
dont mean to hijack but it has to do with captivate tethering..
i have assonance 5.2 and have tried tethering to my pc. seems to work but what i am really looking for is a way to tether and use my PC'S connection on my PHONE so i dont have to dwindle my data plan. ive been looking for a while actually on how i could 'reverse tether' but i guess im blind.
i know, its unbelievable isnt it?
Are you trying to tether from a laptop or pc

yea it should b possible but not very usefull since most pc's connect through wifi anyways so it would probely b more efficient to use wifi on your phone through your home network by installing a wireless router unless you are hard wired in which case u would need some kind of mobile hotspot type of program using wifi or bluetooth also usb of some sorts
problem solved with the newest version of connectify.
edit: well, my problem anyways.
I have been unable to start a wireless tether. When I open barnacle the default verizon hotspot app pops up and gets in the way. Anyone else experiencing similar behavior or find a way around it?
I attempted both the stable and beta versions of wireless tether to no avail (the AP starts, but with errors).

I followed that tutorial and when I activate Mobile Hotspot in the Mobile Hotspot app this notification pops up:
"Checking Provisioning with the Verizon Server."
then the "On Device Provisioning" screen pops up in the background, followed by a notification saying:
"Retrieving terms and conditions.
Please Wait"
finally, it throws the error
"Your order could not be processed.
If you would like to subscribe to the service, call:..."
I rooted the device using Pete's oneclick and ran his scripts in DROID_3_remove_bloat_5_6_890.zip keeping the launcher, messaging apps, DLNA, social features, motoprint, and swype. Does anyone have any insight as to why I am getting this message or what I should try to get this to work?
Edit: I should note that I am trying this on 4G. I could see how this is only possible on 3G, as the radio may use different means of authentication for 4G. If this were to be the case, there might be a second set of parameters that can be modified.
I would love to use the droid 3 wireless solution but i have got to the step of plugging the phone into the computer after having all drivers and the radiocom program installed and it the phone info does not show up
please confirm anyone who has got this to work that the phone is to be in PC Mode.
Again I have all the drivers installed have .net installed and the radiocom program and the phone usb in pc mode
I am running windows vista home 32bit machine
has anyone ran into a similar problem and corrected it that you might share
thanks
Is there a wired tether app out there for use on our D3 that successfully works? I'm running the latest Gummy ROM.
I use Easy Tether and it works perfectly, am running stock rom. hope that helps
Have you tried the built in USB tether in the Wireless/Networks settings area?
Not certain about Gummy but most custom roms seem to have it working.
PDANet
I have been using PDAnet for more than a year, rooted, unrooted, stock ROM and it works well. Recently added a wi-fi feature. Reasonable cost to support the app.

Built in will not work unless you buy the service from Verizon. I use PDA Net. Works very well. My only complaint is that you have to enable USB debugging to make it work.

Try setting the USB to PC mode.
Also, make sure you have the drivers installed:
32 bit: http://www.mediafire.com/?71c12qc4a1svqza
64 bit: http://www.mediafire.com/?8rb7bpvp2b9vy2f
When you enable USB tether it should automatically initialize the Motorola virtual network adapter on your computer.
If you still do not see anything then it must not work with your rom and a 3rd party app would probably be easiest.

Once again, this WILL NOT WORK with a stock Droid 3. Assuming everything works properly, you will sort of get an Internet connection on the computer...sort of...But the only place it will take you is to a Verizon Wireless page telling you you "If you would like to subscribe to mobile Broadband Connect or 3G Mobile Hotspot call..." with a couple of phone numbers and also telling you that its an extra $20 per month for this service.

Yes. OP said he is running Gummy, not stock.
Verizon users report that this works on Eclipse and Maverick and they do not subscribe. It may or may not work on Gummy but it does not hurt to try.
It should work. It isn't too much different than CM9 or AOKP.
