USB/Tether Q? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok, so i have a white G1 running CM 5.0.8-DS, Danger SPL, Amon Recovery, 8 GB SD class 6 with a 512 MB swap. my wireless card on my PC crapped out a couple hours ago, so i enabled USB tethering. I was just wondering if there was any way to mount the SD card to USB while in tether mode or do i have to turn USB tether off for that? thanks in advance,
-Buddha

I don't think you can mount it as a removable drive while USB tethered, but I THINK you may be able to access the SD card contents via the ADB interface. Try using Droid Explorer if you're not familiar with ADB.
Then again, I could be completely wrong.

I'll try that. one mroe thing, im a bit of a n00b 2 this forum and i cant for the life of me figure out where to modify my signature!?!?

Formatting/Partitioning SdCard

I have a Transcend 8gb Class 6 microSDcard.
I turned the phone off to put the card in a card reader to reformat....i noticed that in Paragon Partition Manager 10 Server, that my sdcard is only showing as it being all a ext3 partition.
However windows vista can still read the fat32 partition and so can the g1....I am running JACHero's Roms...I have the new radio/spl and cyno's recovery. My g1 is working fine.
I just want to format the sdcard so i can put a updated JACHero rom on it.
Have you tried using Ubuntu? I find that better than paragon.
heres what i did...and it worked. i got the jailbrake cupcake and put my sd card in a usb sd reader and treated as if the droid was plugged by usb then put the original rom put the sd back in my droid alt s and boom it booted thank god cause i was about to spazz if i had to buy a new phone

is it possible to move files from PC to a microsd in a Bootlooping HERO?

NOOB QUESTION WARNING Anyway, my hero is bootlooping and does not go to rom because i wiped Zen rom ONCE. SD card was reformatted because i did not expect the rom to get stuck in bootloop, so i cannot nandroid. If i hook it up to Mac while it is bootlooping can i move files to microSD via SDK? BTW, if i knew how to do it via SDK, i would already try... I don't have other devices that i can use as a platform for transfer...
Why don't you take the card out of the phone and put it in a card reader?

Because i don't have it...
Boot to recovery then enable USB toggle, connect phone to PC, it will mount your SD card

Alternative Way of Partitioning SD Card?

Using Amon_Ra Recovery is not working now for some reason...been waiting over 30 minutes for it to finish partitioning...but it just keeps on going. (16GB card)
I tried using ROM Manager...it said that it worked...but didn't.
Now trying to find a way to partition the SD card...easy as possible.
ADB commands? is there a windows utility?
gparted
.
Windows won't help you at all, since it's not able to recognize multiple partitions on SD card and/or EXT2/3/4 partitions.
I have the same problem....the Rom Manager dosen't get the job done.
Why can't recovery partition my card anymore? Weird! When I pull the battery after 2 hours and check the card....it has a partition (unusable) with just below the amount I set it for....
So, this time I figured that I needed to keep it in a bit longer so I left it there for 8 hours (while I was sleeping) and it was still going. So, another battery pull and format of the sd card...
Is my phone telling me that I don't need to have all the apps I want?

Not at all true. I've partitioned mine and others many times on windows (tho of course not with built in software as windows has no native support to EXT 2/3/4 partitions), but if you use something such as gparted, acronis disk editor, partition magic, etc that WILL most definitely work.
That being said, you will not be able to do it via USB cable plugged into phone/pc.
OP, do you happen to have access to a card reader? That would be really the only way to format it from a computer.
i used paragon partition manager
worked fine
+1 for GParted

[Q] How-to Mount SD Card 4th Partition?

I'm attempting to follow the directions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=998861 to create a customized bootable SD image. One of the steps involves copying some files to the 4th partition of the SD card.
I've attempted to use the NookColorUMS utility (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952456) without success. I was able to download, install, and launch the application. My understanding is that I need to connect the USB cable to the NC and my PC and then choose to mount the 4th partition in the UMS application.. however, as soon as the NC is connected to the PC, I can no longer interact with the NC (it displays the message about transferring files between the devices) until I unplug the USB cable again.
Apparently, the other option is to use the ADB utility, but I don't really understand how that works.. do I have to download the Android SDK to my PC first? If so, I prefer the method above, but I have not had any luck.. thanks in advance.
I used VirtualBox-4.0.4-70112-Win with Ubuntu 10.0 installed, this lets me see all the partitions if using a usb reader.
Thanks, I'm trying to use this utility if I can, though. Installing a virtualization suite and then Linux on top of it just to be able to see a partition on an SD card is more work than necessary, in my opinion..
I too use NOkk Color UMS....
When I connect to nook, i get the usb storage notification...I do not enable usb storage...
Then...I open nookcolor ums and am able to mount the 4th sd card partition...
Do u turn on the usb storage mode?
I'm honestly not sure why I couldn't get it to work.. I ended up using another method to create the SD image that only has one partition on it, so I was able to copy files to the card without any additional utilities.
I found this to be the simplest and easiest - just drag and drop:

Samsung Captivate external SD card wont show up on computer

hi, i have a samsung captivate running android 2.1, i finally managed to root it with a update package, though, this phone is old, and does not clockwork mod (free version) in the market . therefore, im trying to sideload the free version of clockwork mod with android sideload wonder machine ( AT&T blocked installation of unknown services on this device) , though whenever i mount my external SD my computer wont recognize it( nothing pops up and i cant find the SD card on the computer). any advice/ tips? im using the orginal cable, installed driver many times and restarted many times thanks!
Guys! please help!
I highly recommend you update to at least stock Gingerbread; that way you will be able to sideload apps without any hassle, plus you'll be up to date in general. When you activate USB mass storage from the device, you don't need to mount the external sd separately. They should appear on your computer as 2 removable drives, or sometimes Samsung likes to hide the external sd in a folder called "external-sd" that shows up on your internal.
agree, re recommendation to go GB or at least froyo. is the external_sd folder visible in the phone and does it see the real card?
even when my phone was new, running froyo stock unrooted, and I had never put an external sd in the device, the folder existed, but it was only a placeholder for mounting an sd card.
you can check settings, sd storage, to see if the phone mounted the external sd properly.
