Probably a dumb question... - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was cleaning out some stuff in my sd card and saw several files that are named "DiskCacheIndex12925.tmp" and others with different numbers in them. What are these files? Are they important or just extra from doing something, like maybe flashing a ROM or something?
I'm just curious, trying to learn as much as I can.

I did a quick search on the whole HTC Hero CDMA section for "DiskCacheIndex" and found six posts concerning them. The short answer is that they can be deleted. TrevE posted that they are from the swapping to SD.

Wow, i'm dumb. Thanks for the info, i just realized that i was mis-spelling my search. No wonder i didn't get any results.

Cooking rom's, finding usefull info is hard...

Hi all,
for starters, I know where the search-button is and I know how to read, I've read the stickies and most of the links, so no obvious remarks please
I'm having a hard time finding good threads to read about creating/editing/cooking roms, understanding what XIP/SYS files are, knowing how to strip/add programs,...
I've used keywords like: rom cooking, xip, how to, port, tut(orial), etc...
It only gives a gazillion answers and most of the time useless threads...
Once in a while it's worth reading, but most of the time it's junk or way to specific/difficult...
So the question is, could anyone link some usefull good threads/discussions/how-to's that they've read?
Maybe you could give it a rating yourself going from beginner/intermediate/pro...
Maybe such a condensed topic is already on the forums, then please do show me, since I didn't found it yet...
If you're first thought is "god, not again", then please, don't respond at all
Thanks for your time!

Jack,it's not because of my low post count, that I'm just around here...
I've seen and read that post several times, I've dumped my own rom and downloaded others, I extracted them and started fiddling around, but that's all what I did, fiddling, since I don't really know what I'm doing...
For instance, I'm reading and seeing XIP everywhere, but I don't even understand what it stands for, I can't find (or don't use the right keywords) to find any decent info on it...
I found this great post of Ameet about porting XIP, but that's already about hardcore coding without the basic info I hoped to find... I'm just a beginner, that'll be stuff to read when I'm several months further...
It all starts with the saying, "give a man a fish and he can eat for a whole day. Learn him how to fish and he can eat a life-time.."
The post you refered to is great to learn how the kitchen works, great for learning how to use tools, but the action eventually only shows how to remove standard OEM stuff out of a rom. Nothing more...
Understanding the ins and outs of a rom, how it's build and why, how it's linked and what it does... That's where I think it starts, but that's what I can't find... If no-one ever wrote anything about it, then I will, but then I'll have to try and find bits of pieces of info everywhere... And that's why I posted the question. So people could at least point to some information they know where to find...
I've even seen and tried your work... It's great, but it's a full working, locked rom (at least, it doesn't break down using htainlin's info to the same files and folders as a stockrom does, or I'm using the wrong tools)... I can't see what you've done to make it that way... I can't open it to compare with something stock to see what has changed and conclude what your changes really do... I don't mind reverse engineering, I do have a brain I can use to figure things out..
Well, sorry for the rant, and if I somehow offended you, I didn't intend to, I just hope you now understand what I'm trying to accomplish
Thanks for all who even tried to read this
@Lokatho
Thanks! I've only read the index, but I already know I'll be busy reading that for a couple of hours...

Well, I never judge xda member on their post count since I know some experts in this field maybe new to XDA-developers and some people w/ very high post count are keep on posting **** (e.g. someone in X1 general inventing 4D glasses and UI. )
Most kitchen (at least the one I pointed to) is just a Dos batch script to automated all the tedious command and parameters w/ all the needed tools. You can learn a lot of in and out if just you open it w/ a editor, follow the steps manually and research those tools individually.
If you really want to learning cooking in the hard way, I had a writeup long time back for Asus P525 which most of the steps still apply to any HTC rom nowaday.
All the documents for how to fish is here and we are still seeing people creating new threads for questions that been address millions time. This is a developers forum afterall and no one is responsible to feed you while your hands are free.
Regarding my rom, I never intend to lock it. Both V1 and V2 are extractable but rgu are removed due to space and speed considerateion. Afterall, the main purpose of a rom is for daily "use" instead of "teaching material". Why am I bother to slow my rom down just because I have to let others to extract it?

This part was for the locking section you refer to
I already figured out a number of reasons why it would be "locked", and space-limiting was one of them... I definately understand your reasons and by no means am I complaining about it... It's just a pity I can't use such good material as a reference to study...
As for examining the tools, I was already wondering what they're all doing and what they're needed for... However I'm a bit cautious since I don't know how they work... This'll be a matter of trial-and-error...
I will definately have a look at what you've written, not that I'm keen on really wanting to learn it the hard way, but it might make it easier to understand the working of some of the tools...
About the fishing, you are right, no-one is obligated to give me anything. I was merely asking if some-one might remember a post they once read and found very usefull in understanding or learning the process of cooking...
As I already stated, I used the search-button and already found bits of information that I thought were a little usefull, but I'm having a hard time finding any good posts... The topic Lokatho refered to was a great link and gave me some good information and I've got some nice material to work and practice with... It would've taken me ages to find me or just dumb luck...
I'm keeping together all the links I used to read and learn and might paste them in a write-up once I think I've learned a fair bit
To finalise this reply, I understand your frustration, there will always be people who ask the most simple things on any forum, may it be ppc, car, house or anything related... Questions in here like, how do I have to flash your rom, what is hard-spl, why can't you make a 'insert langueage'-rom, reporting a "bug" that's been declared not a bug for several pages already... Those are the most annoying questions I've seen until now(just to name a few) and are really an indication those are posted by lazy people...
Cheers

Need help with linux swap

First of all yes i SEARCHED for a answer
ok i no how to partition my sd card i have the fat32 ext4 and linux swap partition on my sd card but after that what do i do? Do i just load the hero rom and it will run smoother or should I download swapper from the market and fool around with that some.
ps. When i check my internal memory i have about 27mb
Any help will be appreciated
No you didn't search for answer and this is in wrong forum.
Yes it automatically does it on hero and it will run smoothly (for hero).
edit: just saw you said you have 27 mb internal... clear data on browser maybe? the point of apps2sd is to have higher internal memory than that lol.
Ok
1st. Of all I did search and unless you have a ****1ng camera on my computer how would you no?
But thanks any way
With an attitude like that, i would write you off real quick...best of luck with that though.

Ouch, another tough guy. If you searched you didn't do a very good job. Next time try using the words "linux" and "swap". There are at least a dozen threads on the subject.

I always try not to post ... for specific reasons ... but this is funny. Everyone over at xda have been messing with swap for a long time already and it's like posted from where ever he got his ROM from. You didn't even have to search.
Your the one asking for help so don't give him an attitude man. We're here to help not to screw you over, but you gotta do your homework first.
also .... there google.com .... use it.
Just like others said, I really doubt you searched. This has been discussed many many times. Also like the other poster said you shouldn't even had to search, it should have been on the dev's main page.
Im a new poster but I been reading these forums for months and I searched for everything I needed in this forum and I found everything I needed to know.
That was your second post here and you are already talking smack. Dont expect too much help when you come here with an attitude like that.

I really need some HELP w/ updating Google Ion

Ok, so I have searched and searched... Watched Youtube, etc and I can't get definitive answers or instructions on installing roms, radios, etc. on my Google Ion Dev phone. I bought the phone to be different from the Mytouch crowd, but that seems to have been a bad move on my part so far.
I would like someone to either link me to or walk me through installing a rom for my phone. I would really like the Donut 1.6 version with all the bells and whistles like tethering and MT. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks
Do you even look a little bit at the stickies??????

As much as people claim to search and search and read and read you would think they would read somewhere that posts are supposed to be put in appropriate forums.
follow the links in my signature. root, flash, flash, flash, wipe, wipe, wipe, report, report, report.

this is why XDA has strict rules about posting on their site, if you don't like it ,then don't be a part of the community. Go back to the experts over at the tmobile forums, you can posts any thing any time, anywhere. You guys should feel at home there. .
I prefer to go the "this is where you should post but I'll help you still" route. At least if I can help. Simply telling someone they posted in the wrong place when they're new is no help at all. Yes there are a lot of posts in the wrong section but you don't have to be so anal about it. I didn't know the Ion was a Sapphire device, I didn't know what it was really and my only experience with the Ion is via Soulife's ROM which is stupidly fast. In conclusion, I am great.
Anal you say, ,,
In the Q&A section alone 2522 + threads have been opened . Could you imagine what the development section would've looked like without the Q&A section. .
I think the mods are doing a great job, and members that flame rule breakers, don't stop, burn them to a crisp. .
I don't mean they do things too harshly but that they could at least offer help while telling someone they're posting in the wrong place. I'd hate to be a moderator because it's a thankless job that isn't easy. Please don't misunderstand what I meant

In the device listings in the top page of the XDA forums there are images of each device next to its associated forums; just looking at the front page would tell you that the Ion is not a Dream device, but a Sapphire device.
Also, the reason there are different forums for the two devices is because their hardware and software are different. The Sapphire uses a different SPL and method for flashing ROMs. Asking questions in the Dream forum about the Sapphire board is like going into a hardware store and asking for help with your VCR—keeping the posts in the relevant location is beneficial to everyone involved.

lmao good you read my thread... but the reason why i put that was i saw drizzy and cy's thread alot of things on there were b/s so i put my thread up and i wanted it too look decent lol but yeah good job!... you just are still a "MLIG" haha
Thank you all for the help/defense. I didnt realize that I posted in the wrong section. I was up all night/morning trying to figure this all out on my own. When I say I tried searching, I did. When you search Google Ion, you get 10,000+ hits with the mention of "Google" or 10,000+ with any word with "ion" ala "application, etc. If I post something, that means I am really at a loss. You can see that I have been a member for a lil while, but only have a few posts.
I was finally able to do it via trial and error. I didn't make a image of the current Ion rom so that went out the window. The Google Ion aka Magic (developer's phone) is already rooted (I figured this out on my own). Power + Home will access that area just like the other Magics that are rooted. I put the rom on a seperate sd card without partitions etc. Just a straight drag and drop and rename to "update." When everything finished I then reinstalled my original sd card that had all my apps on it. So far the phone runs fine, it still has that typical android jerkiness at times, but I think that its just the memory constraints of the phone. I loaded the Donut version that has the expansion pack for tethering, etc.
Maybe my post can be moved so that it might help someone else that just needed a simple question about this phone answered.
PS:Since I just did a simple drag and drop will I run into problems later? What's the purpose of partitioning?

[FAQ] Answers for Noobs who like to ask questions. READ THIS BEFORE ASKING ANYTHING.

Ok. I don't know if this will get stickied or not, I hope it will. Mods can feel free to change the title of the post if need be. Here's a stab at answering a few questions which are asked repeatedly.
First and foremost:
CLICK THE SEARCH BUTTON BEFORE ASKING ANYTHING WHATSOEVER.
Secondly:
IF YOU HAVE ROOTED YOUR PHONE, MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE...THEN SAVE A COPY OF IT TO YOUR DESKTOP
Don't even bother asking for help if you've screwed up a ROM install and don't have a backup. The only advice you'll get is to use the RUU (which can be found here).
Having gotten that out of the way here are some of the typical questions and answers.
#1. What's the fastest/best/most interesting/etc ROM out there.
Answer: Try them all and see. If you read the first page of each ROM thread the bugs/fixes are posted. If you see a thread without the bugs/fixes, READ THE THREAD FOR THAT ROM AND ASK YOUR QUESTIONS IN IT. Do not create a new thread to ask questions like: Does everything work in <INSERT ROMNAME HERE> rom?
#2. How do I...?
Answer: The answer to your question is probably http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=CDMA%20Hero%20Guides. If it's not there, it's almost definitely under search. Stop asking. Stop creating new threads. It just makes people mad and clutters up the forums.
#3. I think I bricked/broke/messed up my phone
Answer: Did you flash a GSM radio on top of a CDMA phone (or vice versa)? Then probably not. Pull your battery, restore from the NANDROID BACKUP I'm certain you made when you first rooted your phone and try again. Almost all bad ROM flashes can be fixed by wiping and reinstalling your ROM. Check your battery level. Never flash a ROM if the level is below 30%.
#4. I'm getting an error after using the RUU (110, etc)
Answer: Check the wiki guides above. There is a thread which tells you how to recover. If you are too lazy to read through the fixes, here is the thread.
#5. The Sprint 2.x upgrade is coming soon! I have pr00f!
Answer: No, you don't. Stop posting new threads to draw attention to yourself. The ROM upgrade will be out when it's out and not before Sprint is ready to release. Any release date you might have heard is tentative at best and flat out wrong in most cases. Stop creating threads about it, we don't care where you got your information.
#6. Audio doesn't work in my custom 2.x ROM
Answer: Try here. There are two fixes in this thread for it.
#7. I just flashed <INSERT ROMNAME HERE> ROM and everything's all screwed up.
Answer: Wipe everything and start over. In your nandroid recovery, select 'Wipe Data/Factory Reset'. When that's done wipe 'Dalvik-Cache'. Then when that's done (if you have installed a2sd (apps2sd)) wipe SD:EXT. Then reflash the ROM. 9 times out of 10 this will fix it. The 10th time, ask in the ROM thread, do NOT create a new thread for your issue.
#8. My battery life sucks. Or: What's the battery life on this ROM?
Answer:
Search. There are a lot of threads about battery life already. If your answer's not there, ask in the ROM thread (after searching that thread of course).
Android Terms:
a2sd/apps2sd: The process of moving user installed applications from internal storage to the SD card
Rosie: Typically used as a term describing certain graphical characteristics of the Android operating system, primarily the 'bottom bar' of the phone. Example: Stock Rosie is curved, espresso Rosie is not, with rounded edges.
Also:
"For the record, with 2.1 we CAN NOT just alter the rosie launcher or the taskbar or the HTC lockbar. The files are all tied up together. This means that, if you have installed someones taskbar mods, and then later you decide you want a different rosie, when you flash the new rosie it WILL undo some of the taskbar mods....UNLESS you have a themer do a custom just for you and provide them a link to the taskbar that you are using. I cannot stress the part about providing them a link enough. That is just common courtesy. There are plenty of folks out here willing to help you. Many will even help you learn to do it yourself. Just ask nice and be patient. This is a hobby for us, too, and we often have our own projects that we are working on." - tejasrichard
There is a way to do both, however:
"And a little correction about changing only the rosie or taskbar, you can if you use metamorph [/QUOTE]
You can find metamorph in the Android Market." -danaff37
JIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalvik_virtual_machine Also see the following URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just-in-time_compilation.
LWP: Live Wallpapers. Animated wallpapers that run on your home screen. Until recently, not available in the HTC Sense UI.
MNS: Mobile Network Sharing. The act of using your cell phone as a USB or WIFI connected internet router. Example: Connecting your desktop/latop to the internet via your cell phone's mobile internet.
AOSP: Android Open Source Project http://source.android.com/
PRI: Profile of your phone. Used by your carrier to set up your network/internet settings.
PRL: Preferred Roaming List. List of cell towers close to your present location. This allows the phone to roam more easily since it has a built-in database of towers, rather than having to search for one.
This is getting too long, so I'm going to summarize:
No one likes reading the same questions over and over. If you can't be bothered to at least search for the answers, do us all a favor and don't say anything.
Stop saying things like 'I didn't feel like reading 300 pages of <INSERT ROMNAME HERE>'s thread. How do I?'...USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION TO SEARCH THAT THREAD.
If you don't read the guides, and instruction posts, then screw up your phone, don't whine about it. It's your own fault. It's not the fault of the ROM dev, or the ROM, or anything else. It's YOUR FAULT. Accept responsibility.
Did someone at the Sprint Store piss you off by not accepting your water damaged phone for replacement? Are you mad because they gave you a refurb instead of a brand new phone? We don't care. This is a DEVELOPMENT FORUM. It's for development of roms/themes/etc and discussions of roms/themes/etc. It's not a place to whine that you're being treated badly by Sprint. Post about it on Sprint's forums.
I think that covers the basics. If you're new here, do us all a favor and read this post, follow what's inside it. If you're not new and are a chronic whiner, read this post, follow what's inside it. Just stop cluttering the forums and making it impossible to find any information in it at all.

What terms specifically? I'll add them to the OP.
Edit: Added the two you listed.
Nothing specifically, at this very moment but, I come across new ones all the time when reading different posts. If it's cool, I'll just keep posting them here as I come to them and, if you think they should be in the op you can add them there or, if not, maybe just reply back down in the thread.
BTW. I know that I can google most terms and find them, and I have no problem whatsoever doing that, it's just nice when someone coming here to learn can expedite the process a lil with the help of some of the seniors.

[Q] Need advice on stock N1 before deciding to Root/Mod

Alright, please don't butcher me and be constructive before posting. I've noticed a lot of people posting in this forum getting bashed by others not really helping in anyway.
Anyway, I got a stock N1 2.3.4 and love it. The only issue I have with my N1 is storage. Now I have done the whole adb thing and set to go to the SD card, but I am app hungry as I am a systems engineer and have a lot of troubleshooting apps. Problem being, I have to constantly choose between what I need vs. what I want to use; and both conflict due to size. I have been looking at possibly rooting and even possibly going to a mod (Cyanogen) but do I really need to? My only issue is storage of the apps, so if I can get all the apps I need onto my N1 without having to do any of the previously mentioned, I rather do that.
Any ideas and help would be awesome.
If you root you can run a rom such as, cyanogen which allow moving app to sd-ext. (a script such as dark tremor's a2sd is required)
You could even move dalvik cache and data to the ext. Moving app to the fat 32 don't help much as data still reside internally taking up space.
I guess the follow up question would be then, does it do it natively or like you said, there will be some reading and tinkering to do?
I just rooted to CM7 for the same reason and I get like 100 to 200mb extra space with all my apps already installed before I used to have 25mb free. it does make a difference good luck rooting.

follow this steps http://www.nexusoneforum.net/forum/...bootloader-modacos-rom-amon_ras-recovery.html instead of flashing the rom post it on the page flash this rom http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=stable&device=passion 7.0.3 also theirs alot of videos on youtube on how to unlock the bootloader and root the N1 so you can get the whole process. once running Cm7 you can go to setting and most of your apps to sd
Read the FAQ, question 9.
There is a good reason why some people are bashed on the forum - it's because they refuse to read and do their homework before they go around opening threads and asking the same question for 100000th time. Please try to avoid being one of those getting bashed, and before you ask - invest your time searching the forum for answers. Think of it this way: are you the first that is likely to ask that question? Does it seem like a rare question? And if both answers are "no" - then you'll most probably find your answer without asking.

Some people are just cranky... there is always a bit of RTFM...but this is a forum.
I finally made the plunge about a month ago with CM7 for some very similar reasons as I was just running out of space to run any good applications. I still don't have it tweaked the way I want but doing more research on getting Darktremor to work best for my application.
I have been reading these forums since before I got my N1 and just did not have the need to install any of the ROM's...mainly as I did not think I had the time if things went sideways (usually happens with my projects it seems) but the instructions people have put out are really good and fairly easy. I might not have my mom try to root a device but it is surprisingly easy. I have not jumped over to the nighties yet and may do so in the future.
So my general summary is do it... Root... and get CM7 or the flavor of the month you will be surprised on how much you like it and wonder like I have why in the world you waited so long
Good luck
Chris
app2sd doesn't need a custom rom or anything like root to work 'n' its built in since froyo. anyway try the "pm setInstallLocation" process it might work even without root.
currently there are two different ways to root, with or without unlocking the bootloader.
anyway storage isn't necessarily a reason for choosing CM or whatever like MIUI/Modaco or anything.

At this point I don't think people should really mind simple questions at this point of time. the N1 section doesn't really have that much traffic like before when good questions would get buried under the how to root or best roms questions.
It's actually not so much about the forum traffic, but about the quality of answers. People get tired of answering the same things over and over, and eventually they stop. As long as there are enough knowledgeable people that still answer - it won't matter, but when enough of them stop answering - there won't be good answers to keep this forum trustworthy.

Instead of wasting your time and adding to your post count with wasteful information, why do you skip the thread and move along. You are not being helpful being the forums Dad. There are thousands of posts here and I'm not about to scour them for 2 simple questions that I have, which by the way I did go and look. There are follow up questions that I had as well, that some members, unlike you, have been very courteous in answering. I was wondering how long it would take you to post a useless post, since you seem to be the one bashing and scolding everyone here.

Trust me I wish this was the case. It leaves always files on the main memory and even though I really don't have that many applications the storage left is only 30mb. After a bit of browsing on the web on it, I get running out of space notifier too and I have done both the app2sd and the setinstall location.
Thank you for those who posted with useful info unlike some. Anyway, going back to the topic, I just ordered a class 10 card since mine are only 2 and 4. Did notice quite a few people mentioned that as a must. Now while reading on the CM7 rom, I did notice some saying they have nightlies but have failed to come up with what the heck is it. Any info on that version of CM7?

is a BETA rom it has bugs etc. I stick to stable Rom like 7.0.3 I want everything to work without the pain of major bugs or battery draining in 5hr.

I guess you didn't read the FAQ after all, otherwise you would have known that all the "courteous members" of the forum that answered you, don't know a thing about A2SD - which wasn't mentioned anywhere in the thread - and all the space that CM7 helps you gain isn't nearly enough for most people with N1. Even using A2SD without Dalvik2SD flag is not enough for most people.
But since you insisted on calling the FAQ "wasteful info" and bashing me personally, instead of actually reading the required minimum - I'll move to other threads, and you'll get your help from others. If you'll find someone willing to help, that is.
The forum also has search for a reason.
