U got a couple of options. If ur decently familiar with adb u can backup its folder inside /data/data and then restore it, unless it saves on ur sdcard then u got now worries. If ur new to this, use the script in my signature, its called backup manager. Its a batch file so if ur on windows and have adb working ur good to go.

Thanks, but Im on vacation and dont want to go thru all the work to get adb up and running so if you had any other ideas that would be great.

Ok then get a file explorer app such as root explorer. Browse to /data/data and look for ur apps folder, back it up to ur sdcard n ur good to go.

Im using gbcoid and it saves as a .sav file in the directory of my roms folder. Just a suggestion but i think its time to switch emulators.

Don't believe you can. Someone asked this question awhile back and forgot the reasoning why you couldn't do it. Someone could correct me if I'm wrong.

if he was using switchrom on his SD, wouldnt it work with the script in /system/sd/ ?
I'm assuming it's the apps you don't want to reinstall one by one.
grab this program

copy the .apk files from /system/sd/app to your PC
when you get your new phone root it and partition the sdcard like normal

DUDE! INSTALL "BACKUP FOR ROOT USERS" it saves EVERYTHING about your phone to a folder in your sd card. what do i mean by everything? settings, apps, dictionary...install that and SAVE the file to your comp thatway when the replacement comes you can root and put that sd card that has the 3 partitions in there and go to the market and redownload backup for root users and then restore everything! its how i survive switching hero roms lol

need help...total noob

What program are you using to find it? You need something like root explorer which is a file system available on the market which gives you access to files you can not see with my files. It us not free but is very useful.

i am not using any program. i am just connecting my phone to the computer and going into the command prompt...and then it tells me to pull settings.db i can't find it anywhere.
Do you have your phone rooted?
yes i do justmde
To use that command you need adb google it and will tell you how to install. Or you can use super manger from the market its free to get to the file. Be careful if you don't know what your doing you. I would read up om odin. One click and make sure you have the bottom combos just in case.
I am not too familiar with the command approach, but if you have root explorer you can navigate to your dbdata, darabases, com.android.providers.settings. Inside there us the file you are looking for. You can copy and paste it to you're internal sd. Then hook up to your computer and transfer the file to your pc. I believe you have to open some table and change a zero to a one. Save then drag back into your phone. Copy, paste back into the original directory where you found it. Over write, reboot.
Or you may consider a custom rom, all have this enabled, and have additional perks. Just saying, it is only a matter of time.

the main point that i wanna do..is i wanna go back to 2.1 and just save all of my apps and the progress in my apps. can somebody please message me or AIM me and walk me through???
I am completely new to this too man. I just rooted and enabled sideloading in about 10 minutes without even connecting my phone to a comp.
I'm not sure if it will work without installing the unleashthebeast thing, but to enable sideloading i just downloaded android terminal emulator from the market, opened it, typed in su, hit enter, then typed "sideloading". phone rebooted and now i can sideload.

Phone won't get past boot screen, please help

Hi all,
I have a rooted Rogers Captivate running stock Rogers 2.2 with OCLF. The other day I installed busybox and anim mod, and today I decided to change my transitions with anim mod.
After applying the change, it asked me to restart my phone. I clicked yes, and it hung for a moment before showing a force close screen. However, before I could do anything, it reset, but after the logos and startup animation, it vibrated and went to black. The soft keys still light up, but no buttons including holding down power have any effect.
After pulling out the battery, I discovered I could still get to recovery console (and I'm fairly certain I could get into download mode as well), but my main concern is getting to / backing up my contacts.
Your help would be enormously appreciated!

1. Check the files that are present in the theme u installed - typically the files under the system folders
2. Ask ur ROM developer to package these files (from original ROM) into a CWM flashable zip file (assuming u do not know how to do this)
3. Push this to ur phone using adb and install it on ur phone
Next time on, when installing any theme not made 'specifically' for ur ROM, refrain from doing so. In case you are in a mood to experiment, it would recommended to take a nandroid backup in case issues like this come up.
Since u say urs is stock, u could package these files from ur stock zip. For this u'd have to find a Roger's stock zip file, and u should be able to find an empty update.zip to package these files into (attaching template update.zip to this post; open in winrar).
Thank you very much for helping me with this diablo, I really got myself into a mess and I appreciate your help trying to get me out of it.
I'm not running any themes on top of Rogers 2.2, it's pure stock. I don't have CWM on my phone, nor have I used ADB before. Also, I'm not sure where or how I'd get the stock zip, I did download your template but I don't know how to fill it with what I need.
Thanks again,
Alex
Oh, and if you give me a donate button or paypal account, I'd be happy to show my gratitude.

I
Alex, try searching for Rogers stock ROM. U should be able to find it on these forums.
II
Meanwhile, try posting a thread to ask people here who may be on Rogers stock to zip up their /system/framework folder.
Asking for /system/app zip would not be a good idea since it would contain paid apps too. So alternately,
1. Open the theme zip that u put on ur phone
2. Navigate to /system/app folder
3. List down the apps u see there
4. Ask for anyone who's on stock rogers if they can zip up these files for u.
III
Next, considering u have the apps and the contents of /system/framework:
1. Open the file I sent u in 'winrar'
2. Navigate to system/app folder
3. Drop the apps u got from 'whoever-helped-u' into this folder
4. Navigate to system/framework folder
5. Drop the files in system/framework from 'whoever-helped-u' into this folder
6. Close winrar and rename to update.zip
IV
7. Put this file on ur SD card root
8. Boot into recovery
9. Select 'apply update.zip' (not sure of exact wording)
10. Reboot
Also, what is the theme u downloaded?
I put the steps in blocks so it would be easy to trouble shoot in case u run into any issues.
All the best Alex.
[Q] Phone won't get past boot screen, please help
Thank you again, Diablo, lunch is on me today.
I don't have any themes installed, this is the program that created the trouble for me, which I download from the Android Market:
http://www.androidblip.com/android-themes/anim-mod-root-136113.html
I clicked on the "fly in & flip" selection.
I will make a post requesting a stock rogers 2.2 zip of their /system/framework folder.
Is there anything else I'm missing, and once I get the /system/framework get it into the update.zip, how do I get it onto my SD card root, or do I just put it on the root of an external SD card?

I see its a paid app, so can't say whats in it. But since its into animations and stuff, most likely it messed up some files in ur framework folder. Send me the update.zip file after u update so I can cross check before u can flash it on ur phone.
Hi Diablo,
I wrote a new post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=997233
Am I asking for the right thing?
Also, on the app page it says "Anim Mod changes the system framework files without touching your theme so if you constantly switch from ROM to ROM you can always get the animation you prefer the best."
Does this make anything simpler?
Thanks again for continuing to help me,
Alex

Yes. It says it changes files. I would NOT recommend any such app that changes framework files with/without knowledge, unless, there is a way backup plan at hand to revert to stock.
I normally take a nandroid backup of my ROM before playing with things like this, so in case things mess up, atleast there is a working copy of ROM.
Secondly, since u said u need contacts, I would recommend the following:
1. Install titanium backup (TiBu in short)
2. Backup "Contacts Storage"
3. Copy this folder "Titanium Backup" from sdcard to a safe location (e.g., ur computer)
This would backup ur contacts. So in case u mess up with something, u can always copy this folder to ur sdcard and restore using TiBu.
U can also backup all user apps and data so u can restore all ur apps and data in these kinds of situations. But do NOT backup or try to restore any system data except the one contacts storage I mentioned above.
Also, be warned, contacts data cannot be moved this way between different versions of ROM like 2.1 and 2.2. But u can move between 2.2 and 2.2.1. I was also able to restore this data on 2.3.3 gingerbread.
Personally, I now use "Sprite Backup" to backup and restore my data.
Thanks for your effort yesterday Diablo. I decided to odin flash the stock rogers 2.1, repartition, and upgraded to 2.2 via kies. I lost my contacts, but couldn't go any longer without the phone. I'm gonna back everything up right now!

Sorry to hear that Alex. This time make sure u backup "Contacts Storage" in Tibu when u r on 2.2.
Else use Sprite Backup or anything similar to help backup.

[Q] Backup EFS

Hi,
I am using a Captivate thats running 2.2 Froyo.
It is locked and NOT rooted. I have also not changed the settings to install non-market apps.
Before starting with the rooting process, I want to backup/take a copy of the efs files on my computer or SD card. Can you please guide me on how can I do that?
Thanks in advance
Cheers !
I actually have no clue, so anyone else who wants to chime in is appreciated. I don't think you have to backup your efs, and it shouldn't really get touched. But it never hurts to be safe, so i congratulate you on taking precautions
Well i believe you have to be rooted first to get access to /efs. And if you have busybox you would run a command like "cp /efs /sdcard/backup/efs".
Actually i still have a copy of EFS backup.zip for CWM, if you want that. You have to be rooted and use Rom Manager to get Clockwork Mod Recovery.
I am not a very technical person so I do not understand what a busybox does or what you meant by CWM and ROM manager.
Can I root my phone using http://shortfuse.org/?page_id=2 (SuperOneClick 1.9.5) ?
Is it safe to use that software?
Use Root Explorer from Android Market or this thread may help you

Root Explorer is only around $5 and if you're going to start flashing/modding your phone, it's almost a necessary buy. WELL worth the small ammount of $$ for it. Easiest way I have found to root the phone is to use shortfuze's SuperOneClick. Search for it... you'll find it. and then read a whole lot more before really doing any major changes.
EFS backup is important. If your IMEI gets messed up for any reason, your backup wil save you.

Correct on both counts. If you intend to start flashing custom ROMs, just buy root explorer. It's a great app and you'll use it all the time.

my question is... I will have to root the phone before copying my efs files right?
is there anyway of doing it before rooting? so incase i mess up while rooting then I am safe
I believe there is. I am not sure though as I didnt use an unrooted phone since i bought my captivate.
you need to use adb. You have to download Android Develpment Kit and install it then install one package called platform tools.
Take a look here for some details.
The you have to make a dir, navigate to it from command prompt and execute
Code:
adb pull /efs
Thats should copy all /efs partition to the folder you navigate in command prompt.
Thanks all
@Cezar: Can you please explain me in layman language... i am not too technical.
I have installed android sdk and know what command prompt is.
Can you give me the commands I have to type in command prompt (after connecting the phone) in detail.
As others have said you will need to be rooted to get access to /efs (to copy it).
Rooting your phone just adds three files, it doesn't touch efs so youll be fine.
You will want to backup efs before flashing roms and stuff though.
I recommend you one thing. Root and use SGS tools or Nitrality to backup EFS

TWRP Restore Empty

Hi all,
I am trying to restore a twrp backup that I made, but when I go to twrp and click restore I get a black screen where it should show me the backup file, yet I can navigate via the pc to phones internal storage to TWRP/BACKUPS/2013-06-19--12-07-12/ and all the win files and md5 files are in that folder, tried making that folder into a zip and flashing like you would a normal rom install but it just fails. Sure I just figured it was me being stupid and most people would know!, for some reason, twrp was only reading the sdcard but the backup was actually stored in /data/media/twrp/backups (no idea why it started doing this, I actually have 2 HTC ones both being sent back to vodafone and never had this prob on the first unit), anyway, I downloaded a app called root explored which enabled me to copy the backup file from data/media/twrp/backups to the sdcard/twrp/backups folder and then I could restore
I am sure there is a reason why I had this problem but I wouldn't have a clue as to why! But anyway that's how I solved it, I am sure there is an easier way tho!

It does this with 4.2.2 I think it sucks actually because if you want to copy a back up to/from your computer you have to use adb push or copy it over to your sd, then move it into /data/media
