So. I need help with a Theme. I think that with the Thread, I'll start basic and then we'll work our way up..
Here's the story; I want to make a Droid X Theme after seeing @SMJFOSHO Home Screen Screen Shot. He told me that it was a super Kanger Banged SuperBad and so I was inspired by him. I hope he doesn't think I'm stealing his idea. I told him to make a Theme because he did it pretty amazing, but I think I know what I can so to make my own, and maybe share with you. @SMJFOSHO - I am not Kanging you. In a way I am Kanging you, but I'm not straight Kaniging you, I'm making this for all the FROYOER!
So, 1st shout out is to PAULDACHEEZ! He was the one who game me the /system/app folder from the Droid X Dump for Icons. Giggity Giggity.
So what I would like to begin with it Kanging the Icons. Does anybody know what files I'd have to change in a .apk to get it looking like the Droid X .apk And also, I have a Mac and a Windows, NO LINUX, so how can I resize images (IF THIS IS REALLY REALLY NECESSARY!)
So for example;
/system/app/browser.apk/res/*
What files do I need to change in *? Should I just replace all of browser.apk/res or que?
Any and all help is appreciated. If this is in the wrong section, please move it, but PM and tell me where you're moving it too.
STRAIT KANGING IN THIS BISSH!
Holla at me.
pm me for my gtalk and ill help you out to consuming to help over a forum
Well, I would change only the images (Normally found in the drawable/drawable-* folders).
And depending on whether or not the images are .9.png's or not, you can resize them in your favorite image editing program.

Ok the roms are starting to roll in... Has anyone figures out how to theme them or modify and install a custom mode?
I am eager to learn and use myself as the guinea pig.!.
Any help would be nice..
Yeah we know how to do it...Its basically the same as themeing for the g1, if you're new to themeing for android you should read up in the g1 themes and android themes sections to get caught up...that's where all the good info on themeing is...

Can you simply swap out png's from one theme to another, resign, push, and it will work?

Theoretically, yes...there are certain images that end with .9.png, these have to be editted and replaced a certain way and they require special tools to properly edit and recompile them so that they look right when you put them back...search the other theme sections (android and g1) for .9.png and/or draw9patch.bat. there are how to's and tuts there that detail the entire process...other than those its basically just as you say...

Thanks for the reply and for not attacking me like a lot of other people may have lol. I essentially just want to take the launcher from the Nest theme and put it in the Hoops theme because I find the blue check marks a bit hard to see. The other problem I'm having is actually finding the Nest theme. I'm guessing its the system default since I don't see an apk for it. Would the png's for the launcher be in com.htc.resources or what?
Ya double thanks for not flaming....
Just read early on that it was different theme-ing process then the g1...
I shall give it a whirl..
thanx

NP. theres no reason i cant point you in the right direction without being a d*ck about it. actually i got called out on sounding like a d*ck around here, and for my own personal reasons im trying harder not to.
now about the nest theme...i dunno what parts you're trying to copy over and replace, but just so you know, this is how the themes work. all the mymodes themes (except Nest) are tmobile themes, in .apk form in /system/app. The nest theme, however, is HTC's default theme for the Espresso UI, and it has no .apk, all the images for the nest theme can be found in /system/framework/com.htc.resources.apk, which is HTCs framework.
now, for what its worth, what it sound like you are trying to accomplish may be easier if you just take the images from the theme you want, and drop them into where they go to replace the old ones. you said the checkboxes...they are located in framework-res AND com.htc.resources (both in /system/framework) so you have to replace them in both directories. (or figure out which one overrides the other, im willing to bet if you place them in com.htc.resources theyll override the ones in framework-res.apk)
Hope this helps you out...
if you guys have any questions or need help, ill be glad to help unless there's already a tut on how to do it, in which case ill gladly point you to the tut...lol
happy themeing!

I have looked at a lot of theming threads and learned two things. 1. I don't have the talent to theme. 2. I have a new appreciation for those who do.
What I want to know is how to change icons (just home screen and drawer icons). Seems there has to be an idiot proof way to do it so even an uber nerd like me can do it. Reason is that I have a great theme, but the author hasn't themed all the icons yet so some look massively out of place. So, can someone walk me through how to change up icons with stuff I might find here and there?
I can't remember the url but do a Google search on changing icons in apks. There is a good tutorial out there. I think I had found it on Android Central....

i'm new to this but the short answer is to open, not unzip, whatever rom your using. then open up, not unzip, the apk you want to play with. all that is done in anything like winzip or winrar. then open the png in photoshop or fireworks or something. do your thing then save and update zip/apk, then push new apk to appropriate folder. i would read up though before pushing anything to your phone. for any question i've had, i've found a tutorial here or elsewhere.

Just rooted my wife's Eris and now I've hooked her into modding her phone. She was looking around at some different themes and found the Droiddoespink rom. I know there are alot of dev's out there that only like to theme thier personal rom but for the sake of being truely customizable it would be super beneficial if we could get zip aligned themes only.
I'm specifically looking for theme's like droiddoespink or possibly purple color theme's or other Girly type theme's. I know it's hard to develop a theme that could apply to multiple rom's but if the great themer's on the forum here could pick maybe the most popular rom's and theme them we could choose which rom.....and which theme we would like.
I tend to like .zip aligned theme's better than metamorph because I feel it's easier and there is less to do (and less to go wrong) when installing.
Anyone that can provide me with something, Thanks in advance and I would greatly appreciate it!
MetaMorph is actually better for going across ROMs as for what you are asking, a custom framework apk and update would have to be made for each ROM. MetaMorph causes less damage and can be easier for all users across.
If you want to learn how to do either, I can teach you. Will only take a few mins and you will be surprised how easy it really is. PM me if you are interested. I am done themeing for the Eris as I sold mine but I never mind teaching people. I always say more themers the better.
If you want to let DroidKevlar teach you how to make the metamorph file It would be fine with me if you or anyone else that wants too pull the png's from my DroidDoesPink rom and make it into a metamorph file....I just don't have the time to do it myself.
Link for conaps theme? I might have some free time before I get my d1

Give me a few days. Ill try to finish it before I go on my trip this weekend.
Which ROM do you guys want this for? 2.1 based or CM/2.2 based?
Was going to do this but gotta love @$$hole users. Im done with all this. If anyone wants help doing it, hit me up, but me putting my time for free to do this, not so much anymore. I lost that love. Sorry guys. But it will be pretty simple, just time consuming. Conap has given the OK to do it so anyone can do this. Just make sure you give him credit.
My wife would love this theme. I have done some html and java/javascript back in the day. I have no idea where to even start with this. Ive got a little time and maybe a little money for coffee...lol. Looked at the Droid Does Pink and my wife thought it was awesome.
So my first ever android phone was a Droid Eris that was declared dead by Verizon after only 8 months of the phone being on the network. The devs created Rom after Rom of both Froyo and Gingerbread for a device that was said to never move past Eclair. There developments always sparked interest in to create my own rom and to get deeper into android, but no one was able to point me in the correct direction of where to start. So now having a device like the Bionic I would like to start creating roms. So the question is: Where do I begin
Also if this is the wrong place to ask this please move it.

Start small. Do some theming and learn what programs you can use to modify apk files. I use a mac to do all of my work. Some programs I use are better zip, springy (which are 7zip equivalent), figure out how to use apktool, there are several guides on how to use this. If you need help, let me know.
When theming, there are three or four apk files that you may want to start with.
-SystemUI.apk
-framework-res.apk
-moto-res.apk
-blur-res.apk
These files will hold the status bar images and files, all of the background colors, highlight colors, etc.
You can use one of the zip programs mentioned above to change the icons and pictures, and use apktool for text colors and things like that. Just start poking around and see what you can find.
Once you get a grasp on that, start tweaking and changing things and put it into a rom i guess lol. You will need to look at the updater.script and learn how to use them inside of roms...if you need help with this after actually opening it and reading it, feel free to ask.
I should also mention, you should probably be theming a deodexed rom. So do a little research and learn how to deodex your phone...its not too bad.
Hope this sends ya in the right direction and once again, please feel free to ask anything.
Yes, I agree.. Start small, like themes and mods fotr other ROM's.. learn how things work at a basic level... then maybe look to join a team where you can learn from someone else..
You will also need the Android SDK so you can use the draw9patch for certain images.
Am I wrong here or is the dude trying to make a ROM, not a theme? Never made a ROM so i dont know. Guessing theres a lot more for for him than us themers.
You need to learn to walk before you run. Also I have android sdk on my computer but it is messed up.
Thank you for the replies. I have a couple theme ideas
