I was playing around with the Wi-Fi sleep policy settings and I am little bit confused how it really works.
The default setting is something like: "turn off wifi when screen is turned off".
So as I understand it it should disable wifi when the screen is turned off.
However when I checked my device list at my router it seemed that my n1 was still connected through wif, even after the screen was turned off. Only after 5-10 minutes wifi was really disconnected (when I turned on the screen again the wifi symbol in the top bar appeared after some seconds). I read somewhere that there is a difference between disabling wifi and disconnecting wifi?
BTW. the wifi sleep policy is supposed to save battery because it is said that 3G in idle mode requires less power than a wifi connection, but I read that with the nexus one the opposite is true. so what's the truth?
It's normal for the wifi to disconnect after several minutes of inactivity once the screen turns off. As for your very last question, I don't know... but I imagine that idle 3G is less power intensive than active wifi, otherwise it wouldn't be the default option...
I'm on AT&T, which usually has pretty fast 3G speeds.
I've noticed that when I'm tethering, if I download a file on my computer, or watch a video online, it will load for about 5 seconds at great speeds, 100kbps or so. However, after those initial 5 seconds, the speeds will slow down to 10-20kbps.
I've found that if I refresh a small page on my phone while tethering, like the google search android home page, the speeds will increase if I continue to refresh.
Somehow initiating new data transfer "slaps" my connection, and increases it shortly!
Can anyone explain this?
It's quite annoying to have to keep refreshing a web page on my phone to get some reasonable download speeds..
When I am xfering DATA while tethering generally speed are in excess of 200kbps.
I have not experienced any throtteling going on, but on occasion the site that I am connected too is overload and my speeds drastically decrease.
Dan
Very strange. ATT does not do any throttling that anyone has heard of so far anywhere on the web.
That's what I thought too. So I am thinking it may not be an AT&T problem.
I've noticed also that when I am loading a page while tethering, if the page is taking forever to load because of slow speeds, I just have to unlock the phone and play with the screen for a second then the connection will jump back up.
It's like the tethering is going to sleep when the screen turns off...
When your screen is off, your wifi will enter a low-power mode no matter how you set "Wifi Sleep Policy".
You can verify this by ping from your laptop to your phone, you'll see that the latency greately increases when phone's screen is turned off.
So you have to keep your phone's screen on if you want full speed.
Thanks.
I can't seem to find the option that allows me to keep the screen on when charging though, do you know where it is?

there it is
Every time I put the Nook Color in standby, it loses my wireless. Upon taking it out of standby, it doesn't reconnect automatically- i am forced to actually go into settings- wireless before it finds my wireless network.
I have installed Spare Parts and set the Wifi sleep policy to never, but it still doesn't automatically connect to my wifi network. Even if I turn off my wireless and turn it back on via the widget I have on my desktop, it won't connect. I am forced to enter into Settings- wireless every time.
Thanks in advance.
bumping once- seriously nobody else has this problem?
Yes I have this problem too but don't know how to fix it. I just turn wireless off then back on.
No issues here at all, reconnected within seconds. Rarely do I even notice it was disconnected at all.
Are still on the 1.0.0 firmware? I had this issue, but since updating to 1.0.1 (which stated it improved wifi) I haven't had this issue.
Yeah, I see this too. I saw there was a hack somewhere to make it persistent. But that would certainly drain your battery more. It didnt bother me all that much, but if you need it for Gmail/texting/Google Talk, I could see why you would want it to be persistent for notifications. Didnt bother me, since I have a phone too.
By any chance did you install the wpa_supplicant to enable use of adhoc networks? I've only had the issue since I did that. More info below:

Same here mine only does it since the install, but I knew that going into it as well.
I always had that issue, before the adhoc fix and after. Learned to livevwith it. Haven't upgraded yet... still on 1.0

Same exact thing is happening on mine. I have AutoNooter v1.01 currently and every time my device goes to sleep the wifi turns off, which hasn't been an issue until just recently.
In the past as soon as I would turn back on my device, the wifi would reconnect. Now I have to manually go to Settings> Wifi to get it to reconnect to the network.
I have tried the SpareParts fix, but it doesn't help. I have also tried on different wifi networks, but the connection issues still occur. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I also have the same problem, running auto-nooter. The only thing is that my signal never reconnects, I have to manually reset my internet router in order to get it back. Rebooting, or turning off Wi-Fi settings within the device doesn't help.
The only thing that works is never allowing my NC to fall asleep on it's own. If I manually put it into standby mode, it works fine.
I have the 1.0.1 update, and I called BN, but they only offered to replace it. I have it tricked out just the way I want it, so I'm just going to hold on to it for now.

I had the same issue as well on 1.0.1.
I've found that the wifi doesn't turn off for me if it is plugged in and charging. I did enable wifi to never sleep w/ spare parts, but it still turns wifi off when it goes into standby when not charging.
My wifi stays connected with the screen off, but some times when I turn the screen back on the wifi disconnects. I know this happens because I am listening to Tune in radio and it does not disconnect until I turn my screen back on.

This also explains why the wifi doesn't kick out when a music player is playing. I don't have enough posts yet to post a real link :/

Dang, I wish I would have found that app before I made and released my own.

Mine does it.
I have to turn off then on.
This is only after the adhoc patch. I think I'm going back to infrastructure only.
I'm using wake timer:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/waketimer/schaze.waketimer
Same idea as SoftLocker but lets you also setup a timer where after a certain amount of time the system will actually sleep. Useful for night time or other extended periods of non use where you don't want to drain the battery.
Problem is that it does not activate on boot like SoftLocker and also after the timer expires and it goes into sleep, WakeTimer does not reactivate on wake.
Edit- after testing both programs I think SoftLocker is better. Running battery tests, there was not significant battery drain having SoftLocker on all the time. A few % overnight, probably related to the accumulation of e-mail, tweets, RSS downloads etc, but really minimal. Like that Soflocker can be checked to start on startup.
+1 for SmartLocker
This has happened for me as well. My remedy was to create a Tasker task where it's set up to connect to my SSID whenever it's detected.

Well, I'm the SoftLocker dev...so...I'm listening.
I saw the waketimer option for a timer and liked the idea...perhaps a future update?
Hi,
I have flashed my N1 with CM6.1.1 around 2 weeks ago. I'm really satisfied with this ROM.
However, I have noticed my Wi-Fi has gone a little bit weird after flashing CM. Regardless of the Wi-Fi sleep policy setting, my N1 won't turn off the Wi-Fi after it's locked. When I unlock my N1, I can watch the wi-fi icon disappear and then re-appear after a few seconds.
Now I have to manually turn off the Wi-Fi before locking my N1 to conserve the battery. Does anyone know how to get rid of this bug?
Thanks.
i will give you one tip which is its better to leave wifi ON when your phone goes to sleep because it's much better for battery life. if you let wifi turn off during sleep, the phone switches to 3g data which drains far more battery than leaving it on wifi.
now about the disconnect issue, i'm not quite sure what you're seeing. i have a problem with cyanogen 6 where my wifi disconnects for about 3 seconds, and this happens about every 10 minutes or so. its very annoying. but when my phone goes to sleep, i wake it up and still see wifi connected. so no issues there for me.
Wildmonk has some kernel just to address the WiFi issues.
I suggest WM kernel with CM ROM anyway
The problem occurs randomly. Sometimes my phone "knows" it should turn the wi-fi off when it's locked. But most of the time it doesn't...
I think I will live with it.
Anyway. Thanks for the reply.
My WiFi still disconnects every few minutes, then re connects again. It drives me nuts. Cyanogen 6.0
to momomok,
I think you have misunderstood the word "sleep" for Wifi, here sleep means when you are not using your phone the Wifi will turn off temporarily instead of infinitely. It's more like a nap. As you unlock the phone, Wifi will get awake. That's why you will see it re-appear after a few seconds.
Hi!
Having troubles with a 520 because once it enters the deep sleep state, it'll start getting Whatsapp notifications only when waking it up.
No battery saving setting is turned on.
An APP that wakes the device from time to time would help.
Thanks.
Perhaps you either have cellular data turned off, have no data signal, or are set to only receive notifications over WiFi? By default, WP turns off WiFi when the screen is off and the phone isn't plugged in. I think there might be an option to change that, but I don't recall where it would be.
There are definitely apps that will cause WiFi to stay on in the background (I think pretty much any streaming music app does this?), but those will wreck the battery life if you just leave them on all day. Apps are also able to periodically (~every 30 minutes) do some stuff in the background even in the phone is sleeping, but I'm not sure if this is allowed to wake up the WiFi and cause it to connect.
If the problem isn't WiFi instead of cellular data, I really don't know what's going on.
