Hey there,
I have tried to gather the best freeware applications Android has to offer, with descriptions, links back to the developer's websites and QR codes that leads directly to the Market. It's about a 100 apps divided in various categories.
I'm curious what you guys think of the guide? Would your Top 100 list differ a lot from mine? I hope some of you will have use for it!
Here's the URL if you want to check it out:
The Ever-Growing List of Awesome Android Applications
If you can think of any more applications that should be on the list, please let me know
Thanks

As a new Hero-user (on my third week now), I must say one thing: Thank you so much!! =)
Thanks! Glad someone liked it, at least
A bunch of new apps have been added to the collection, and if anyone knows of a great app that's not included - please let me know.
Nice work!
There's a quite a few top lists, and some are better than others, both in content and layout, but I always discover some new apps worth checking out. I very much like that the entire list is visible on one page, with short descriptions.
Would like to point out that Think Android's AppManager (both free and pro versions) has been renamed to AppMonster.

Are you sure? Because I couldn't find a free version of AppMonster, but AppManager is still available?
Thanks, helped a lot.

The creators of the app announced the name change on their website: http://think-android.com
"App Manager" has been renamed to "AppMonster" in market a while ago now (but it depends on what country you're in). If I search for App Manager it only shows apps with similar names, not the app by Think Android.
Androlib now only shows AppMonster in some -not all- non-English markets, namely Chinese, Czech, Italian, Japanese, Russian. And even then in some markets only the Pro and in some only the Free versions. I think Androlib is not that up to date.
http://www.androlib.com/r.aspx?r=appmonster
AppBrain correctly shows the app as "AppMonster": http://www.appbrain.com/search?q=appmonster
Far too much use of the word "awesome", but a nice list, thanks for your efforts.

You're right. I was tricked by AndroLib.com, initially, since it didn't show any results for AppMonster when I did a search.
@knightnz I try to use the word "awesome" with caution, but I like to alliterate
I've added a new section to the guide with the top free Android live wallpapers
Did I fail to include any good ones?
Apologies for my criticism, but a pure list is not so useful in my opinion; I mean, there's Google for that.
It would be much more useful if this was a ranking, where users can vote their best 10 apps, for example.
Super great lists. Few worthy ones:
1) ColorDict: Universal dictionary reader for Wordnet, data downloaded to local memory (SD Card) for offline view
2) RealCalc: Best replacement calculator
3) Uninstaller: to uninstall apps. Phone's manage application way too slow
4) KeePassDroid: android keepass for storing logins and passwords. If setup with Dropbox or sugarsync, then can sync between phone and computer.
5) Call History: detail call logs better than what 1.5 offer with ability to back up.
6) Moto Phone Portal : access phone by wifi in same network using browser. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=574677
7) xScope GL : Another web browser with much better functionality. Free version limited to number of favs.
8) Skyfire beta : surprisingly fast enough and only option available to view web based videos until Flash 10 lands.
Did I miss K9 or it's not on the list???
Hi again,
I've done some major updates to the Android apps guide, and it now includes all the top widgets and live wallpapers as well. I've also removed some outdated software, and added blue borders to the very best applications so they're easier to spot.
All apps, widgets and live wallpapers are free
Cheers
Hi guys,
I was just wondering if anyone out there has already thought of this or if this is even possible.
First off, I have no clue where to send suggestions to google, and I doubt they respond anyway so the best hope for this would be a community effort.
The Situation: (no Jersey shore jokes please) Well we're all annoyed by the rampant abuse of the Market by certain companies releasing and updating their pointless fact based apps, and that makes the whole "Just in" option useless.
We only have "Top Paid" and "Top Free".
Basically, the Android Market experience is pretty bad in terms of searching for apps though categorisation.
Proposed Solution:
What the Android Market needs is the following.
1. A Sort by Rating, Alphabetically, Date Released, Developer option (probably more but that's all I can think of now).
2. More sub-categories within the main ones. E.G Multimedia->Video Player/Music Player
What do you guys think? Is it plausible?
There have been countless discussions on this on here, other forums, news groups, Google official groups and everywhere else for that matter and in all honestly pretty pointless to talk about since Google appears to be in on hurry at all to resolve this issue.
(nothing against you, just stating facts).
you can post suggestions to android here:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/list
Try appbrain.com they do a good job filtering the nuisance apps from the just in apps.
Can we please make a new market app that filters out assholes who post garbage like Call photo clip apps, sxy azin grls ^.^ etc etc etc forever.
I know there's been apps, specially on 1.5 but they don't work anymore, and I know the market is getting firmware specific but I'd love to see an app that selects which firmware you're using, and the ability to block devs or key title words.
As Android takes over from iPhone as the dominant platform, there will be a lot of pressure to manage the Market better...
AppBrain does a pretty good job of filtering those, plus you can browse the market on your PC...
Probably several of you have also discovered the icons and Google Plays auto suggest. And these icons do not only come for brand-keywords. They also come for generic keywords like in my example: Keyword "book".
Does anybody of you know how I can get an icon for my app too at Google Plays auto suggest?
See screen what I mean:
[screenshot whe searching for "book" - unfortunately as a new user I cannot posts pix/links]
If your app is popular, in terms of number of downloads, reviews and ratings, then you will automatically get one. No need to worry.

hello aritaroy, your answer is neither helpful nor true. There are sometimes small apps which get such a logo for some keywords. And at other times really popular apps (downloads, reviews, ratings) do not get. What if you have several popular Apps for one keyword?
Anyone else with experiences?
Dear Internet,
it may sound a little bit strange, but I need help, a lot of help!
I don't know anything about coding an Android app or something like that, but I have to make an app for personal use, just to know how creating an app looks like.
My app looks like this:
The app that I want to create is an Social Media network for everyone around the world. It is used for people with accounts on a worldwide map. The account contains, or course, your description. But instead of daily life selfies or photo's, this app is used for Geography where photo's/video's from around the world are shown on someone's account. These photo's are pinned on a worldwide map, which will be in the main app.
* Summary *
The accounts are pinned on a worldwide map, which will be shown every time you'll log in. The accounts can also be searched in a search bar. Someone's account contains a pin section with all the photo's he/she made, shown on a world map (again but without the account pins).
It is a really small app, but many people could use it.
Again this app is only used for geographical photo's and video's, where people can give their stories on.
I really want to build this app, but I don't know where to start...
Greetings,
Papyrends
