Ive noticed a significant decrease in battery life ever since i updated my phone to FRF83. I can leave it on at 100% and it drains down to 75% or even lower the following morning. It usually drains no more than 10% if i leave it running overnight.
I dont have any apps running in the background, and my task killer is set to auto kill 3 mins after screen blankout. Auto refresh is, and has always been on since the day i got the phone though.
I manually updated to FRF85B and the battery life is still as bad as ever. Ive never gotten this problem with android 2.1 or any of the earlier froyo builds. Someone care to tell me whats wrong? Ive heard others reporting that their battery life has increased after updating to froyo, why am i getting the opposite?
I have this issue because of my exchange server.
Ive never set up and exchange server on my phone. The only constant apps that should be auto syncing are gmail, calander and twitter, which is set to refresh once every 1 hour.
Same for me, battery life sucks lately.

Then there are people reporting that their battery life has increased after updating to froyo. In fact mine was ok at first, until i started using FRF83 onwards then it all started to go downhill. This morning i woke up with the battery at 44% when i last saw it, it was at 90% the night before. It drained that much overnight and its not supposed to happen!
Mine was very good since updating to froyo ( starting from first builds leaked). Its very good now too, better than before anyway. I used to run of juice by 9PM, now i have ~ 20% left with the same usage.
Check out what apps are consuming the battery, i got terrible batt life when i tried the droidx live wallpaper.
App usage are the usual stuff.
Display being the highest, followed by android system, then cell standby, phone idle, twitter, android OS, launcher pro..etc
something seems to be sucking up my battery and i dont know what
I'll be the first one, I guess - I blame the task killer. It's widely known that you shouldn't need a task killer, unless you have some rogue app.

But if your task killer is set to auto-kill on screen-off, even if various apps restart then that should only be in the first few minutes and shouldn't reduce the battery that much.
I have taskiller installed but only for manual killing of problem apps (a rare occurrence) and I have noticed poor battery life since moving to FRF85b - didn't notice anything of the sort in the Froyo versions before 85b though.
Well i just uninstalled task killer, i'll leave the phone running overnight again to test the battery again. But from the looks of it. It seems battery life has improved slightly, but it could be just me.

Yeah thats true. It shouldnt suck up that much battery cos it only kills apps once. It could be an issue with the task killer causing it to drain the battery, because after uninstalling it i think the battery lasts a little longer. But i'll leave it running overnight again to confirm.
My quick story:
- frf72 and earlier - about 12 hours battery life for me. Used task killers, 2 emails on push. WiFi, BT off. Also tried juicedefender and setCPU. They made my battery life even worse.
- frf82+ (now frf91). Read up on how Android manages tasks and power. Got rid of all the task managers, setCPU and JD. Only use OSMonitor every once in a while to see if any dumbass app using up CPU in wakelock. So far none.
- EVERYTHING is ON. Wifi, BT, GPS - always on. I never use 2G, it's always 3G/HSDPA. GMAIL on PUSH, Exchange PUSH or 10minutes (no difference in battery for me)
- After a 24-hour test (from which 8 hours were on standby at night) I lost 80% battery life, so 20% still remain.
My advice: uninstall anything like setCPU, JD or taskkillers. Let Android handle that. Install OSMonitor and make sure nothing's in wakelock. Wipe cache if you want. If you're not getting 18-20+ hours, perhaps time to calibrate ur battery.
Thanks for the tip, just installled OSmonitor. The interface is pretty messy! But at least i understand whats going on. So all i need to do is keep track of which apps are at the highest load?
Is it really necessary to kill unwanted apps (Twitter, goggles, gmail..etc) because they are taking up RAM to improve battery life while idling?
OR you could just take Paul's advice and not use a task killer. My money is on him =)
FAQ: Why You Shouldn’t Be Using a Task Killer with Android
Wow thats a very informative read! Thanks for the link. I too also thought that an unwanted running task means i need to kill it to free RAM in order to speed things up and improve battery life. Didnt know im actually doing it harm.
Looks like i'll ditch my task manager for good and have faith in the OS.
Using LauncherPro Beta? I think some battery issues have been traced back to the way LP is handling updating widgets right now. Hoping for an update to fix it soon.
Well guess what. I just used the phone for an entire day and left it on since last night. It dropped down to 25% when i got home and was about to replace the battery pack. So it looks like task manager was the cause of the problem.
Launcherpro doesnt seem to be affecting the battery life.

Well it won't show up in the battery usage as affecting the battery. It has something to do with the widget updating not launcherpro. I removed BBC News, Beautiful Widgets and my Battery Info widget and my battery is now holding steady.
I'd be interested if you'd run an experiment, remove all updating widgets, notification widgets, etc and try again.

This isn't a little rise in battery draining. This is an absolutely ridiculous spike in battery usage. I left my phone overnight, and it dropped from 90% to 37% within the 8 hours I left it sleep.
Is there anything I can do? This is stock JPO updated via Kies. Will changing ROM or Kernal fix this? Because quite frankly, I am sick of this. I can't take my phone out for the day without it dying on me.
As far as I can tell, it's not the sensor bug some people are experiencing, as I'm not seeing any suspicious usage in the battery history.
Any help would be very much appreciated as I'm seriously debating getting rid of the phone. I just can't keep it with this appalling battery life.
Thanks.

Turn off auto rotation and data connection (3G). That should improve your battery life siginificantly. You don't need to check your emails in your dream do you?

Thanks for the reply.
I have auto-rotation off as default. It is really plausible that data connectivity is consuming this much power? I never had this much battery drainage in Eclair, even with auto-rotation on, data connectivity on and with the screen at maximum brightness.
I've downloaded APNdroid and will see if turning of data connectivity will help, though I very much doubt it. I'll update here in the case that it does though.
Do you have a exchange account configured?
It's known to drain your battery at that rate when not set to "Push" (generic Wake Lock problem in Froyo)
Also, if you don't mind spending a few bucks, install System Panel app and let it monitor CPU, that way you'll find out which apps are the top battery users (while asleep, battery drain is fairly equal to cpu usage, so the top cpu-usings apps will be the drainers). I have 75% battery left after 10 hours of light usage with Bluetooth. Auto Rotation and 3G enabled.

The only email I use is Gmail, synched to my phone. I've noticed that a fair-few people are having battery issues with a number of suspected causes. The exchange email setting being one and the sensor issue being another.
Would flashing to a custom ROM fix this issue? Or would it still persist? I really wouldn't mind flashing to a custom ROM if it fixes this absolutely pathetic battery life I have at the moment.

I had advanced task killer installed and was experienced battery drain..not as much as you but if it helps it al counts

I don't use any form of task manager besides the stock one, which I use on rare occasions.
I'm really debating just trying to flash with any old ROM to see if that fixes the issue.
Are I using the ext4 lagfix? If so there's your problem there. Also to fix gallery bug you just need to root phone and use root exeplorer to copy fixed gallery.apk into /system/Apps. Putting new modded Tom won't fix it as thy mostly use old default gallery which has sensor bug. Look in search to find gallery3d.apk file

I'm not using any lagfix at all. It's stock JPO updated via Kies. The only modding I've done to it is rooted it.
How would I go about checking whether or not the Gallery is the cause of the battery issues?
Hi,
I have noticed on my SGS that there are always 10-12 background apps that are running... Although I have Advanced Task Killer installed... And also there is significant drain in the battery as well... I loose 3-4% in one hour (when the phone is idle)...
Is this normal ?
Is there any way to avoid the background apps to start automatically? Does these apps drain the battery?
Also, I am using Launcher Pro... Whether it can be the reason for the drain in the battery?
Is there anyway to reduce the battery drain?
P.S: The phone is rooted...
Thanks,
Guru
Samsung Galaxy S
Android 2.2
BaseBand: I9000DDJP2
Build: Froyo.DDJP6
stop using task killers.
3-4% isn't unusual, but task killers will make it worse.
Hmm... I have the same problem with Doc's Rom XWJS3+speedmod kernel.
Somethimes I get 2%/hour battery drain (which is normal for me) and other times I get mad 5%/hour battery drains.
When I got the 5%/h battery drain I checked Spare Parts, but it didn't show nothing unusual.
And I know Spare Parts and the usual suspects: Gallery 3D, Dialer, Fruit Ninja,...
Thx god phone reboot fixes the mad battery drain.
Too bad this isn't fixable because no app shows high battery usage in Spare Parts.
EDIT: I do not use Task Killers and yes I would also not recommend using them.
Thanks guys for the replies... I have disabled Advanced Task killer and now monitoring the battery drain...
Also, any idea if Launcher Pro consumes battery as well? Since I have kept it as my default launcher...
Thanks,
Guru
Yes I guess we are all in the same boat.
When I clear level 1 and 2 memory in the task manager, I get a note that 10+ apps have been stopped but I believe this is not the right thing to do.
Android OS seem to work this way.
I need to do some reading about it.
Can someone explain what are the disadvantages of using advanced task managers?
the stock task manager is fine.. its the other ones from the market that contribute to battery drain,, even tho they are made to decrease battery drain.... weird i know...
they are permanently checking the OS for running apps, and certain options like 'show notification message' or 'auto kill at screen off' means the app is running permanently.... even when you kill it. it just starts back up in a blink of an eye...
stick to the stock task killer as its no better / worse than the rest......
I've got my autonootered 1.1.0 NC and it is working great. The only thing is the battery seems to be running out really fast on this. On my wife's autonootered 1.0.1, the battery isn't running out nearly so slow and we have all the same apps, although some of mine, since it's newer, may be more recent versions.
One thing I noticed is that she has very little time on "Android system", whereas 2/3 of the drain on mine is from that. The only apps that typically run though are advanced task killer and batter indicator. I regularly shut down everything else.
I've also renamed phone.apk and the telephony(something).apk on both of them as well.
Is there anything that will deep dive into "android system" on battery use? There are no rogue apps running (at least according the task killer). Or any suggestions?
First thing I'd suspect are live wallpapers followed by widgets. Verify that you have a plain wallpaper and remove any widgets that you would anticipate are doing frequent polling of any kind. I'd remove that battery indicator one and see if that helps.

Running zeam with plain nook wallpaper (just like on my wife's nook). No widgets. Am seriously wondering about the battery use thing though.

Like I suggested, uninstall that battery indicator app. You didnt mention which one it is so for now based on the only info youve provided thats the only advice I can give.
In one test I did on my nookie froyo install I'm running, I tried a new spruced up kernel and ran a battery status widget. The widget caused the nook to stay out of deep sleep and also out of lower clock speeds when idle resulting in horrible battery life.
Are you running setcpu on either or both nooks and if so are they set the same?
Sent from my nook color using Tapatalk
Try systempanel lite task manager by nextapp in market. It might help show ram and cpu usage of things.
Sent from my nook color using Tapatalk
When not using wifi turn it off. That will save you some battery life as well.
Keep the suggestions coming
The battery app is "battery indicator". It is usually running on both nooks, but mine has a more recent version I think (this is my main suspect right now).
We always kill the wifi when not using it, so I know that's not it. Also not running setcpu on either.
I sucked down probably 5-10% while just reading with only "advanced task killer", "battery indicator", and the stock reader running for less than an hour last night.
I'm going to try systempanellite and see if that tells me anything. Also going to charge it up to 100%, boot into CMR and reset the battery stats.
If it is the battery app, wondering how to find the older version to downgrade to, or maybe just find a different one, I suppose...
45 minutes of simply reading and went from 99% all the way down to 88%. No battery utility. Systempanellite (only running for a few of those minutes) didn't really show anything sucking either.
Only other difference I can think of now is that I disabled OTA updates on my wife's nook.
I wonder if I just got a bad nook, battery wise...

So ~10% from about ~1 hour of use? Might be a little high for just reading, especially if your brightness is low and your wifi is off. However, I note a 10% per hour discharge with average use. I get about ~2% or so overnight loss with screen off and wifi off.
Rooted 1.1, Monster root pack. Overclocked with Dalingrin's kernel.
Looking at the two nooks, side by side, I notice that on mine, AFfileDownloadService and CloudService are background, while on my wife's, they are 'Service'. When DeviceManagerService is running, that is also background on mine and service on hers.
Could that be why the "Android system" is sucking so much battery? SystemPanel doesn't show anything sucking cpu....
I know it's supposed to be around 10 hours, but that works out to be about 7 hours reading a small, simple epub, which has me concerned.
I did lower the brightness on mine to match my wife's exactly. It was less than halfway, but heres was lower, right in between the two esses at the end of 'brightness'.
A more deliberate test shows 1% drain every 5 minutes (almost exactly) while just reading. That's a little over 8 hours and still less than I expect. Maybe I need to tweak the brightness a little more...
Hey guys,
I'm running the latest release from nadlabak, 04.10 one.
I experienced battery issues on some previous releases as well, however i don't know if it's this release or what, but the battery usage is draining very fast!
I am not really running anything, I have liveprofile auto memory manager, and handset sms. liveprofile doesnt even really run, i barely use it so it should be either in the background or not running.
i looked at the battery usage stats, it shows email is using about 40% of the battery draining.
my phone is VERY warm, feels like the cpu churning through something... i can run at 52vsel with 1000mhz vrate. fine and still my battery is about 40% after 2 hours.
I reset to factory clock speeds and it drains the same if not faster!
not sure what's going on but its driving me nuts, google maps also shows to be running in the background, however i never turn it on, i reboot my phone, leave it as is and it shows maps is using 10% battery usage roughly when i havent even initiated it to be running(unless it always has a service in the background?)
i had releases from march that ran better, about 8 hours of battery life. and i believe even a april release was working fine. but now this latest release especially seems to suck up the battery, i dont know if its the releases or if something else has changed...but its very annoying holding a very WARM phone and having the battery get sucked up in 3 hours.
Looking at spare parts, does it sleep at all?
40% usage from email is high so something is wrong there but I doubt it's CM7.
Also, what AMM settings are you using?
Hi there, I'm running the following:
vmheap 40mb
amm: 6, 13, 24, 40, 51, 63.
any suggestions?
where do i find out if it sleeps, im in spare parts.
In Spare Parts, the first item is Battery History.
Go there and it will show how long your battery has been running (%) since unplugged.
If you select the top drop down list, select Partial Wake Usage to see which apps might be keeping the phone awake.
Where did you get those AMM numbers from?
I'd suggest my Balanced 3 (6-8-26-28-30-32) for a nice mix of free memory without being overly aggressive on the background apps.
If you use any of my scripts, disable AMM from having superuser permissions.
I had gotten the stats from another popular thread on this forum.
ill try your stats as well.
vmheap still 40?
also i still notice email is the one that has a huge bar graph usage on the partial usage stat page. not sure why email is being kept awake..
should i factory reset?
have you wiped cache/dalvik? If not do that.
Sent from my Milestone
I had wiped the caches multiple times, tried a lot of things, everything accept a factory reset.
I did a factory reset for the hell of it, set the amm settings as requested vmheap to 40.
everything seems to be running smooth and fine at 1000mhz 54vsel
and the battery usage is at 90% while being unplugged for 7 hours, will monitor to see if the usage drops substantially later on in the night but so far i think things may be fixed.
Battery usage is nearly constant.
That's not good at all.
Something is keeping it away.
What does spare parts show now for partial wake apps?
The partial usage is like 5% now vs what was like 50%. and email isnt even probably 2%. handcent sms is taking up the 5% roughly.
its at 80% after being on battery for 8 hours 26 mins. and i have probably used it for about 30-45 mins worth of on screen time, rest idle.
Oh wait, I think I misunderstood.
You meant that you had 90% left and only 10% used up, right?
If that's the case, that's pretty amazing.
I have expirienced that if I haven't done full wipe(factory reset) my battery is drainin like a crazy. That's happing in all roms I have used. So my opinion is to apply any update or now rom on clean Milestone
how to delete apps in android

What apps and widgets are you running? Have you gone through 2 or 3 full discharge/recharge cycles? There are apps out there that can detect if any app is consuming your battery but you will have to search the forums as I don't know of any first hand.
Also, which ROM are you using? When I was using Rocket Rom v22 with AbyssKernel 4.1, my Note would last more than a day on the same charge even with moderate use. Give that a try as it also really boosts performance.
I'm currently on Team Rocket Rom (ICS based) v5 but have not used it extensively to comment on battery yet. So far with 3 activesync email accounts (all push), some widgets running (weather, clock, etc.) and the Note sitting idle consume about 2-3% battery per hour. Will monitor this.
most smartphones ned to be charged every day, what battery life are you expecting to get ?
battery depends on the usage and applications you installed on the phone.
have you tried rooting already? usually custom roms have the best alternatives of extending your phone's battery and giving it an optimal performance.
Try to stop some bloatwares that your phone's loading up everytime it starts up(from rebooting)

I am using la2 rom. Here i attached an picture.
Geez... i personally feel that one day charge is reasonable especially with the juice required to drive the big display.
Anyway, Juice Defender premium is one app that has helped me, and may help you too.
Since you got Activesync, with the premium version of JD, you can customize app to be excluded from 'power saving', so that the inbox is up to date.
+1 for juicedefender.
Other tips that may not be obvious to first-time smartphone owners are:
1. Set your screen brightness to auto. You don't need the brightness cranked right up all the time.
2. Disable bluetooth and GPS if you're not using them. Juicedefender will do a pretty good job of managing your other radios.
3. If you've got email syncing set up on your phone, set it to check as rarely as you can put up with. Push email uses a LOT of battery life, and even a scheduled check can blaze through your battery if it's happening often enough.
4. If you've put on a custom ROM your phone may be reporting inaccurate battery stats. Give it a full charge, boot into clockwork recovery and wipe your battery stats. You'll find a few days after that your phone will start reporting more accurately.
Good luck, and if any of this was unclear feel free to ask further questions.

Try a later ROM to see if the same issue exists. I think you should instal rocket rom v22 - you'll be happy with performance and battery life based on your usage.
try to calibrate your battery as well... there are many apps out there that offers better battery calibration or you can do a manual calibration as well.
Give it some time and upgrade your ROM
I am getting great battery life. It runs for full day (24 hrs) with 30% of battery usage. though in a day i dont use it much, just 5 to 10 calls of around half an hour to 40 minutes.. data and gps always on.. screen brightness on auto...
My note running the OEM battery last me about 6 hrs.
Averages about 45mins talk time/day
About 50 SMS/day
Screen brightness set to 100
Checks email every 5 mins
Using a live wallpaper
Refreshes the daily weather using Accuweather every hr
Bluetooth always turned on
Battery Widget
Fancy Widget
ESPN scoreboard ticker widget refreshes
Twitter running all day
Facebook Widget syncing all day
and more...

^ This. Or better yet, just always set your brightness to the lowest brightness setting, 50% afaik. And use black/dark wallpapers and always turn on night mode (if applicable, especially when using your browser)
If in case you need to adjust the brightness, you don't have to go through the jungle of settings, just click notification bar and slide horizontally to change to your preferred brightness.
Jd is hit n miss will actually helping out. If your phone sleeps a lot jd is nice at keeping cell or wifi off if your like me and on it every 10 minutes then toggling data and other things can consume more juice. .... I have tried with and without on my tablets and phones and see no big difference depending on use.

I was pretty happy with my battery until two days ago. I use my note very little, for e-mail checking (which I pull manually) a few times a day, and to make two or three phone calls per day. I also text my kids occasionally. GPS and Bluetooth are off most of the time. Battery used to last me about two and a half days under these conditions, which seemed reasonable to me. All of a sudden, two days ago, I charged my battery, and after a full charge it drained 60% overnight. Thought that it was a fluke, so rebooted my phone, fully charged again, and the same thing (over half of the juice gone overnight) happened again. Battery stats tell me that Android OS were 100% responsible for overnight drainage. Any clues? I am on stock ROM, by the way.
Thank you.

Get a good app to check what is using the battery or keeping the phone awake. This last is the most likely.
Baddass Battery Monitor is my recommendation.
Not a single phone call, only used about 10 mins. after 21 hours only 11% left. Install Jd with 'balanced' option.

Thank you. I will give that a try.
Badass, got to love that name....
Ok, I used the Badass monitor to see what's going on. Once again, no phone usage, quick overnight battery drainage. Android OS 100% responsible, and the main power sucker is the Kernel (96%). Why is this happening? And, is there a remedy? I have changed nothing that would trigger this! My Note is still within the return window, so if there is anything wrong with it, I will return it.
Thanks again.

Badass Monitor is very useful, my note was drained by Dolphin Browser, it used 38% of battery. Seems like for this browser, if I only press home key to exit, It will keep running?
I think the reason the battery drain fast is we press 'home' key to return to main menu, that will keep a lot of apps run in the background.
