hey guys, i am not new to the scene but i have actually run into a big problem.
A few minutes ago i flashed a Hero rom followed by the ebi1 kernel, it booted up perfectly fine and went into installation, still no problems.
Once installation finished i learned that for some reason the home app(launcher) doesn't load, it just constantly gives an error force close when trying to go to the home.
Everything else does work.
I then decided to reflash the ROM, when booting my phone it would not go into recovery, i held the home button and it froze at rogers logo,
I tried again after a battery pull and same result, i thought uh oh, BRICK!
When i rebooted again( holding nothing down ) I learned that it apparently does boot! if i leave it alone, it does the whole buttons light up screen dims thing just before it boots, then the screen dies off and I hear a sound meaning usb connected, **(all this while it is still showing the second boot screen)**
The end button works to turn screen off and on but it it stuck at the second (MLGIN or whatever nexus style boot screen)
I nave now found a way to actually get past the boot screen, if i call the phone it will go into the dialer and I can actually use it as a phone!!, once in like this I can actually use the phone completely except for going to launcher(home), I can make calls (if someone calls me to get into the dialer), use the lockscreen, send a message (if someone sends one to me), enable usb mount.
I have a nandroid and a BART saved but like I said i cannot get into recovery.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Please let me know if my post doesnt make any sense, i can try and get my thoughts out again!
EDIT I CAN get Droid explorer to work, this means i can install any apps that could help! but i dont think i could launch them
-with droid explorer i can use terminal, cant i launch stuff with that? also, when i click Bart manager it says i need to buy a license, aww
- I clicked on reboot into recovery in droid manager, the phone rebooted but it hung at the rogers logo, I really cant understand how the recovery doesn't work!
EDIT it WILL boot into fastboot mode!
Can i install an alternate launcher with droid explorer, I think that if i can do this, when i hit home it will give me the option of choosing which laucher right? i then choose the new one.
Any one know where to get a different launcher? or perhaps the launcher from this ROM so i can try and reinstall it
Because i can use droid explorer, the options are nice,
I still need help organising the above attempt, but if that fails I could also use the flash recovery image option in DE and try that.
Am i right in saying that I should first try and get a different launcher to work or should i go straight for the recovery. If the recovery doesnt wokr could I lose access to the phone booting? (thus droid explorer)
OK I would LOVE some community help here:
I think i wave 3 options
1) install any apk (namely a new launcher and get the phone to atleast function properly)
2) Re flash a recovery image
3) Flash a ROM
All of these would be done with droid explorer, i think i have listed them from least risky to most risky (if i flash ROM and that doesn't fix it i could be out of droid explorer)
Could you guys help me start up, where can i get what, my mind is racing too much!!!
ok, using droid explorer i re flashed the recovery, it now boots into recovery. i am going to reflash the hero rom as i really want to use it!
I'm on a Sprint Hero. I used the universal one-click to root. Titanium Backup to restore my apps after flash. Clockwork's ROM manager for the rest.
Two days ago I decided to flash my first ROM, CM6. When I flashed I got a little carried away, flashed the ROM, gaaps, sprints vvm, the mms fix, and a stable uncapped kernel all at once. Bottom line, it wasn't running quite like I had hoped and I was running out of spare time. Flashed my nandroid backup and was good to go. Everything restored like it was before I started.
Yesterday I found some time and decided to try flasing CM6 again. This time starting slower, with just the cm6 and gapps. Then everything else as needed.
Here's the problem; I can't get to recovery mode. I've tried the "Reboot into Recovery" from the ROM manager. I've tried the power down, power up w/ home key held down. I've tried power up with volume down key then choose recovery mode. I've tried installing rom from sd (this gets me to the point that says it is sending me to recovery to finish installing).
I get three different results, and they seem to apply themselves randomly to my reboots. First, I get hung on the white HTC screen. Second, I get the white HTC screen, the phone gives a vibrate and the screen goes off. Third, I get the white HTC screen, the phone gives a vibrate, it reboots back through the HTC screen and starts up like nothing happened. For the first two, the only way to get the phone back is a battery pull.
I have rerooted with the one-click. Still no luck.
I can restore my original nandroid backup through ROM manager.
I can flash clockworkmod recovery. It is current at 2.5.0.1
Could someone please help me find my recovery mode.
Thank you.
Peace.
Have u just tried holding down power and home it takes like 20 seconds just keep holding them it should pop up and if you hold power down and volume down wen the screen pops up just hit home button and wait it should popup hope this helps good luck
Root-Hack-Mod-Always™
I have tried both. I have also tried getting to recovery through Clockwork's ROM manager.
Every time my phone tries to get into recovery mode it gets stuck. When I say it gets stuck, I mean one of three things happen. First, the phone hangs on the white HTC screen. Two, the phone gets past the HTC screen, the screen shuts off, and the phone becomes completely unresponsive (when this happens I need to pull the battery to get it back on). Three, the phone gets past the HTC screen, reboots itself and boots right up to the stock sprint ROM(it ignores my request to get to recovery mode).
This morning I tried something new, but still failed. I uninstalled Clockwork's ROM manager. Erased the clockwork folder from my SD card. Reinstalled the ROM manager. Flashed the ClockworkMod recovery. Was successful with getting a recovery, 2.5.0.1 Tried to backup my current ROM. The phone rebooted, gave me the HTC screen, then shutdown and I need to battery pull. After that I tried the Home Key recovery reboot and got the same shutdown.
Does anybody see anything that I have done wrong here? Anywhere. I just want to find my recovery mode. Is there another way to get there?
Please help.
Thanks.
Peace.
Try flashing a different recovery I recommend Darch Star RA 1.7 If you search XDA /hero cdma/ android development you will find a thread called Darch Droid 2.8 go there and on the first page u will find it along with instructions on flashing the recovery if you need help with that just respond here and if I can help I will but hopefully that helps good luck

This got me back to where I need to be. I've got my recovery mode back! I'm running a nandroid as I type and I'm on my back to CM6!
Thank you for suggesting something that hadn't been suggested yet.

Help! I'm a newbie at this forum , but I just a droid 3 today , and while trying to get into recovery mode , I got stuck in a continueious boot loop. D:
I Installed the rom manager , got an ics rom , installed clockwork mod etc , then went to reboot into recovery , but it would just do a normal reboot,. I then found a safestrap .apk , which was I guess a modified version of HashCodes. But when I went to reboot , it just got stuck in a boot loop. Any Ideas? I'm trying Hashcodes SBH flash or whatever to reset it to factory settings , but unfortunatly its a 500mb download. So thats gonna be an hour. Any suggestions?
Was Clockworkmod uninstalled/removed before you added Safestrap?

Boot with X+Power, then both volume keys, and wipe data from withing Android Recovery. I'm not a fan of ROM Manager on the D3, it only seems to cause headaches in terms of ROM flashing.
Okay , I'll try that in a second. As SOON as I got finished with the download , the phone died. ( left it in the fastboot mode thinking it was charging...apparently not...D: ) So I will post results in about 20mins. Also , is there any other way to install roms without it?
I've done alot of ROM flashing to windows devices and just older things...and I always liked the simple installers without any problems etc. Anything like that on the Droid 3?
And no , it was installed. Haha , but with the strap , I don't think it installed completely? It kept force closing the installer right before it got to 100% ( I thought it got to 100% ). I didn't know if that was normal , or what. I couldn't open the app after that...
Now , I;m having a different issue. The phone died , and I've had it on the charger for a good 20-30mins , and it won't even go into the bootloop now. It will turn on with a battery with a question mark in it , but it won't do anything else. Help? Haha
You're moving too fast lol
Once you get your battery charged, it'll probably be best to start with a fresh SBF flash (an SBF that is appropriate for your phone, of course).
Then root with one of the many tools mentioned in the development forum
Then install the safestrap app, then run it, and hit the install button. It will say in the safestrap app if the safestrap recovery has been installed (the first line in the app window, I believe)
If safestrap doesn't say that it installed (in that first line), you may have to separately install Busybox installer (its free in the android market). Then you can try to hit the install button in safestrap again.
With safestrap installed, you can restart phone.. you should see the safestrap splashscreen on bootup - hit Menu to go into safestrap recovery.
In safestrap recovery, it will be in non-safe mode (your phone's current stock rom).
Use the volup/voldown button to navigate, and power button to select.
Go to the safe menu, and hit toggle safe zone (or whatever its called)
It will move the necessary stuff and get you into the safe zone. Once that's done, there will be no rom on it yet, so you can then install a custom rom from zip.
Hope this helps

The phone does not charge when it hasn't booted. You're gonna have to buy or jerry-rig a usb battery charger. You can take any old USB cable, strip the wires, and tape the black wire to the (-) terminal on the battery, and tape the red wire to the (+) terminal on the battery. Charge the battery for a maximum of 3 hours.

Thank you Chatoic* I did that last night after I realized the battery didn't charge. Then flashed a new SBH etc. Rooting worked fine , and now I get to the menu just fine on bootup. But now I'm having another issue. I go to Rom Manager , and try to install my AOKP ICS from the SD card , but when It reboots and goes to the menu etc , I don't know what to do to install it. It makes a backup I think? But doesn't install the ROM. Sooo any Ideas? Am I missing a file or something on the sd card? And it says Error partitioning the SD card with a backup etc...
IMO, ROM Manager only causes way more headaches than it fixes, at least on the D3. I would recommend a folder simply called AAAZips (This is what I use, it keeps it at the top for less/no scrolling in Boot/SafeStrap) on your external SD card. Then install either SafeStrap or BootStrap, as you prefer, and reboot into recovery this way to backup/flash/wipe/etc.
Moral of this, IMO, ditch ROM Manager.

Then I just boot into recovery and do what to install the .zip?
And what do I put in the AAAzip folder?
Nevermind I think I got it working. WAY better then rom manager.....
I'm glad it's working. It may not be as nicely polished as ROM Manager, but flashing through CWM/SS from SD card seems to work better.

I'm noticing that the modded safestrap kicks me out of safe mode when flashing and then causes me to bootloop, maybe because of a problem w/the flash related to kicking me out of safe mode or something. Try hashcodes safestrap apk from his blog site and see if you have any more luck with that.
A couple days ago I decided to load the new Safestrap Hashcode linked to. Everything went very well, and I have been running Maverick 4.5 in slot 2 as my daily driver. I was able to get back into Safestrap using the menu button. I also loaded Gummybear ICS into Slot 3, but went back to Maverick.
Yesterday I was going to go back into Safestrap and switch to the Gummybear/slot 3 rom to check it out.
I can't get back into Safestrap at all. I am stuck in the Maverick 4.5 rom.
One thing I did notice and do not understand: When I use Titanium Backup or the Reboot Widget to "Reboot into Recovery", I get a Yellow Triangle with an Exclamation Mark and the Android guy.

That's the stock Droid 3 recovery. Using a reboot recovery will lead to that, and will not allow Safestrap's bootloader to intercept the boot and activate Safestrap recovery.
I haven't tried running Safestrap 3.05 myself, since it's still not official, but I do know that you cannot reboot recovery as you describe to to get into Safestrap for any version of Safestrap.

thats the stock recovery
now. do you still get the boot menu splash page where it asks you to input the menu key or continue?
if so hit the menu many times or hit on the screen the hit menu for recovery image section, as it shoulod also work.
maybe my next question is silly or already tried, but have you tried to try it with the charger disconnected?
some times when my droid 3 is connected, the touch screen gets un responsive o registers more than input
hope this helps
I now have the same problem. I see the splash screen and it vibrates and reacts when I press the menu button, however it does not boot into safestrap v3.05.
From the JB topic it seems more people have this problem!

For those with trouble entering recovery with SS 3.05
The EASIEST and most DEPENDABLE way I've found to boot into the new SS 3.05 is;
Shutdown the phone
Slide open keyboard
Hold M and press the power button to boot the phone (still holding M, release when it boots the next step)
Immediately a menu pops up
Press Volume DOWN to highlight "BP Tools" (tap several times, be quick, if you wait too long, it'll automatically select what is highlighted)
Press Volume UP to select it.
Phone will reboot showing the M logo, then proceed into SS Recovery.

Had this problem today after creating a rom slot and flashing a new rom, this worked for me however I had to try it a few times. Once I got into recovery I wiped the rom and rom slot and ss3 is working properly now. Not sure if this was a rom issue or ss3.

When you run the OTA update to 906, it will remove the Safestrap bootstrap and will unroot as well. However, you can reroot with Motofail, then run the Safestrap app again to install recovery, and you slots *should* still be there. Perhaps making a backup of each slot before running the OTA would be smart.

i dont like the word "should"
ok i try to save the files in safetrap and try an OTA. yesterday the ota didn't run but i think i have to wait longer thar it starts the installation than the 10 minutes...
The slots are all stored on the internal storage (the mount point /sdcard) on the phone, so as long as you don't format internal storage, they should stay there.
I should note that I have never tried installing the OTA with safestrap 3.05 installed - I did it with 1.08. Actually, you may want to activate the stock slot, go into the safestrap app and uninstall recovery, and then try running the OTA. It's possible that the OTA will balk with a custom recovery installed - I don't remember, and, like I said, I never tried with Safestrap 3.05 installed.
You can also download the OTA, copy it to an external SD card, and manually run the update from stock recovery. See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1643521
[edit] Sorry - that link is for an update from 890 to 906. I forgot that you were not on 890. Sorry about that...
I had almost the same problem with my phone, the diference is that mine got stuck on non safe system (Stock ROM). Initializing the phone with th Android Recovery (Turning on with the key "m" pressed down) and choosing BP Tools doesn't worked.

A couple weeks ago, I upgraded the ClockworkMod Recovery on my Thrill. A few hours ago, I attempted booting into recovery mode. My phone is now stuck attempting to boot into recovery. It's stuck at the LG boot logo and will not progress to recovery or even into the boot animation for a normal boot. I have tried holding the VolDown+3D to manually boot into recovery, I have tried turning it off and back on, I have tried removing the battery for a few minutes, I've tried removing the battery and SIM card for several minutes and there is no change in status.

Try this. Take out the battery, while the battery is out hold down the 3d button, the volume down button and power button. "While" these 3 buttons are pressed insert the battery. You should see the lg logo flash on for a second or two than off. From this point leave the battery in and try to boot into recovery with the three buttons.
