Go to the cyanogen mod wiki and download the stable 5.08 nexus one image. Open it in 7zip and extract the music apk. I installed it and it works fine. I also removed samsung's sound player and music player through titanium backup and everything still works on my phone including ringtones and notification sounds

Are there by chance any other goodies that can be used from that build on the Captivate? I'm loving the music player.

Can you post a link? Also, how would I go about putting the music apk into the phone? Sorry, I'm still new to android phones
The link to cyanogenmod stable (2.1) for the nexus one is: http://n0rp.chemlab.org/android/nexus/update-cm-5.0.8-N1-signed.zip
there are a number of apps (if not all) that can be straight copied over to our phones (or any HDPI device I believe) since the ROM isn't odexed. I personally use the stock music player and the deskclock utility (though trying to use settings or the music icon on this app causes it to force close).
to put any of these apps onto your phone, either read up on how to enable sideloading/non-market apps with adb OR use the Android Sideload Wonder Machine from Android Central: http://www.androidcentral.com/sideload-android-apps-all-you-want-sideload-wonder-machine
The music.apk file can be found here: http://www.mediafire.com/?lncllepwv1pr27b
again, you can remove the Sound Player and Music Player provided by samsung through titanium backup and everything will still work smoothly.

Thanks a bunch! Do I need to install cyanogenmod? I skipped that step and everything is still working fine
I just googled it, works fine for me. Much more functional, the samsung version doesn't let you explore your playlists, so I couldn't use it...
Stock works perfectly though.

no, you don't install cyanogen mod (there is no working cyanogenmod specifically for the galaxy s line yet). Simply install the apk through the android sideload wonder machine. You can pull out the apk's that you want FROM cyanogenmod and install them manually.
there are some apk's that you obviously shouldn't try with this same method (ones that are deeply integrated into the ROM like Dialer.apk or Contacts.apk) without a lot of background research into how to get them up and running smoothly (if it's even possible).
When I tried tunewiki I found it to be a little laggy when scrolling. Does the stock version have this problem on the captivate?

Get Eliot Stocker's Music Mod and Droid Shuffle. You will never need anything more.
Music.apk
I downloaded that music.apk file it was a zip unzipped dont see an apk file please tell me how to install that on my phone
@clownluv
you must be a troll...
Anyone notice something weird when scrolling through songs on the stock android music player? When I use the bar quick scroll to songs beginning with a letter, it would go to I -> O -> E
even though I'm on M or something else.
Yup it happens to me as well.
I think it has something to do with song names.

Is there a non-Froyo version of Music Mod?

Yes, version 1.6 although I still had the scrolling issue on that too.

Me too. Other than this, this is a pretty good music player.
Just as the title says... I'm running a rooted stock ROM with sideloading enabled and was wondering if there was a way to change the lockscreen. I saw a couple floating around but they look like they required specific ROMs or 2.2 installed.

I doubt it. You could try fiddling around with the framework but I believe different lockscreens come from specific roms.

It depends on the lockscreen. I know you can get the AOSP lockscreen for 2.1. If you want the glass lockscreen from one of the other SGS phones you would have to see about it. I have seen an app that was a lockscreen switcher, but I took a quick look in the market and didn't recognize which name it would have been. I attached the android.policy.odex for the AOSP 2.1 lockscreen.
Hey flashman2002,
Could you explain how to use that file?
Thanks
Would I run that .zip as a normal update.zip file?
One app (that costs unfort) that will do this is Widget Locker. It isn't 100% bug free though and your results may vary.
I know Design Gears had a stock lock screen posted on his site at one time for 2.1 ROMS but I dunno if it's there any more.
You would unzip the file I put up. You could the use a file manager like root explorer or astronomical and move the file to its proper place. Back up the original android.policy.odex incase you need it.
This is my captivate. There are many like it but this one is mine.
k so i installed serendipity 3.5.2 and noticed it doesnt have the video player that comes with the stock froyo 2.2 or even the eclair 2.1...
Uhh, is there any way i can get that video player on my device? I did a little searching found the apk, and tried to side load it. This is the error i got
3085 KB/s (398096 bytes in 0.126s)
pkg: /data/local/tmp/to_install.apk
Failure [INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES]
Any help is greatly appreciated . Or if there is any other video player that does a really good job. Thanks
P.S... id rather have the stock video player than any other app
Have you tried using root explorer or another root file manager to drop the apk into the /system/app directory?
uhh, ive tried an app called app installer and e file
both said i didnt have permission to copy into that folder...
root explorer is a paid app though, so i have some trouble getting it :S. Im underaged so i have no methods to pay for it LOL
Appreciate your help though
Use Super manager. Its free from the market. Just enable root functions in settings and you are good to go.

Super manager worked perfectly Thanks
Any chance you could point me to where you found the stock Samsung video player ? I want to add it to the ICS rom I'm trying, its the only player that works with 720p .mkv video's without stuttering and looking crappy. The stock Samsung video player is VERY VERY VERY good...
I think I found the stock video player apk, tried to install it on my Captivate that has an ICS4 rom on it, but install failed...
Does anyone know where an ICS version of the stock Samsung player can be found ??
I need to figure out how to reinstall the Samsung music player that came with my original ROM, I'm running Overcome 4.1.0. How do I get this player back?
Not looking for "that player sux, use [insert name here] player instead". Want the original player back.
Move to: system/app folder with a file menager
You're awesome! Thanks!
On the original ROM (2.1) i can play AAC+ files or streams but with ginger elite (V2 & V3) the files are not supported.
So is there any way to pick up the AAC+ decoding library from the original rom and use it with a custom rom
You can use some 3rd party app from Play Store. I found this one, it says that it plays AAC+. So try and see if it works for you.
the same problém, files are not supported
it's like winamp it plays AAC+ files on stock rom but doesn't on custom roms
i guess this players use the library on the system to decode the files so we need to extract some files from the stock roms and add them to the custom rom (but wich file exactly )
