Trouble manually updating to Froyo. - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all....I did do a serch but nothing came up with my search term.
I have an unlocked Nexus One. When I download the update, I rename, copy to SD and follow the instructions per the thread here. I do not get the triangle/exclamation mark...I get my X with the unlock icon under that then to a screen which lets me choose to "flash zip from sd card",,,I can choose this but it fails over and over.
Ideas about what I am doing wrong?
thankyou.
Im currently on build ERE79
Kernael version 2.629gad36b87
baseband 32190016u4020214

Well i did a wipe restore and then received the OTA and all is good.
thanks.

You're welcome, next time though post in the Q&A forum.

Ive been looking for a way to revert my wife's phone from 2.2 back to 2.1 without rooting.
Awesome man. You're a life saver. 2.2 wasn't working on hers at all. She hasn't been able to use her phone for 2 days.
THANKS!
+1
YES!!!!!
Thank you, I had a botched 2.2 install and my phone was useless, was getting desperate trying to find this information, my phone is back!!
I cant find that file ' passimg.passion_.zip ' under ROM at Android Technical.
NM- Seems if you update using the test ROM Google will OTA you the final Froyo release =D

(2) click on "ANDROID ROM LIBRARY"
(3) type "Google OEM" into the search boy (of course without the "")
(4) click on "Search"
(5) click onto the "Google OEM" link that says "Nexus One Shipping ROM (Original)" in the "Version" column
(6) at the bottom you will find the download link
(7) happy downloading

thnx alot just a couple of q's b4 i do this. I had ERE27 build (I believe that it what is was b4) Will it go back to this and 2.1 and the previous build? Will I lose any contacts or anything else by doing this? Will I lose the unlock or rooted part of my phone? Is there anything I should be aware of? thnx again
*problem solved*
im a bit lost, so what are the instructions? Just download and boot to bootloader? Then what?
Nap05 said:
If you havent rootet before and if you have not unlocked the bootloder (like me), you will keep those "settings" and thus keep your warranty.
If you synchronise your contacts & calender with your google account before you do this you will keep your contacts.
I personally recommend to do a factory reset in the android settings, to "clear storage" in the bootloader menu and to format your SD-Card with normal settings before copying the PASSIMG.zip onto your SD-Card to ensure your phone and your SD-Card was "clean" before doing this backwards-update
ERE27 is the official first update for the Nexus One, so to say 2.1-update1. After you have done this restoration you will start with android 2.1, which is the original build you also got when you bought your Nexus One when it came out in January (Codename = ERD79). But you can directly update to 2.1-update1 (=ERE27) and wait until you get the message to update to 2.2 (FroYo).
I recommend to wait for the official launch since the actual FroYo version is not considered to be a final build.
I hope this answers your questions ;-)

what do you do with the passimg.passion_.zip is you are NOT rooted.
Nap05 said:
If your device is already rootet with an custom recovery image and an unlocked bootloader, the following steps are not the right for you if you want to restore your N1:
(1) Do a Factory Reset via Android OS
(2) Reboot into Fastboot, go into Bootloader and click "Cleare Storage"
(3) Reboot your phone, plug it into USB and make Windows access it via USB
(4) delete all files on the SD-Card, format it, and then copy the PASSIMG.zip onto your SD-Card
(5) Shut down your phone and boot it into fastboot again and go into bootloader again. Now the phone will regonize and load your PASSIMG.zip and ask you if you want to update.
Everything that follows this instructions should be self-explaining (press yes to update etc.).

did you go to phone about and see if it has to be updated? what build is it?
I am updated to FRF50 but i want to go back to 2.1 ER79 I think it is called.
I think I need to unlock my bootloader for this to work. i keep getting a missing file error when trying to unlock it though.

[Q] Purchased rooted phone - how to find out what ROM do I have

I Purchased a Nexus one from EBay and the seller told me that he had unlocked the bootloader and had installed a custom recovery so my OTA updates won't work and updates are needed to be done manually.
I am a complete Android newbie, this is my first phone, so I am sorry for asking this but, can someone help me figure out what rom is installed on my phone and what custom recovery it is?
Also, is there any way I can go back to stock so i will get OTA updates again? I have been googling and it looks like bootloader can't be locked again. If not thats cool, I will probably install custom roms in the future but i want to learn and get used to Android first.
Thanks

Looks like you made a mistake in 1 of 2 places
1) Using RSD lite for installing vulnerable recovery (did it flash ok?)
2) Or you did not install OpenRecovery correctly.
#1 requires you to restart with RSD
#2 requires checking that you did the Following:
OpenRecovery zip file contains 2 things : an update.zip and an OpenRecovery folder. You need to extract (copy) these 2 elements to the root of you SD card.
So in your SDCard you should have an update.zip FILE and an OpenRecovery FOLDER.
Then, from the standard recovery menu, you choose apply update.zip. This will start the OTHER recovery you wish to use (to install ROM). The ROM zip files belong (unextracted) in the OpenRecovery/updates subfolder.
Does this make sense?
yes RSD showed me PASS then only i closed it. After which i switched off the phone and then went to the "apply update..." menu.
i also do had update.zip, openrecovery and openrecovery-cfg all three folders.
so do you think is there any other place to go wrong?
moreover the universal androot's APK doesnt look like an setup file in milestone, any idea about it ?
now, let me try the link you gave me.

Try the link, follow the guide and ask again.
Honestly, you don't really need to root using those methods.
The vulnerable recovery + OR is all you need. Most the ROMs you will install have root built-in.
I would make sure I download ANDROIDIANI recovery (it is generally considered the best for Milestone.
Thanks Caz666, the link you gave me worked like a magic. Now i am done with root and cyanogenmod 6.1.2.

I am not certain i understand your questions
1. Wiping : you need to wipe all data (factory reset) if you switch to a different ROM. You only need to wipe dalvik cache and /cache if you upgrade to a newer CM6.
2. ?

First of all thanks for all the help.got everything installed. My mile is working awesome.
When should I do wipe factory reset?
Next how can I get black colored status bar.top one.
Lastly if I have to install a new Tom should I
1. Redo sbf?flash ie firmware flash right?
2. Redo a open recovery. Is there a alternate to this?
3. Guess I can follow the rest of the instructions specific to that rom.

1)
You should do a full wipe only when switching to a REALLY different ROM. Upgrades and version updates do not require this. Also, if you are trying out another CM6 based ROM, you *may* be able to avoid this.
If you are not sure, you should wipe. With options like apps2ext or Titanium backup, wiping is not such a big deal.
2) You do not need to do #1 or #2 for a new ROM. Only flash SBFs if you want to try a stock ROM (like when Motorola releases Froyo) or you have serious issues with the phone. OpenRecovery only needs to be reinstalled when there is a new version
3) To install a new ROM, wipe from inside OR. The 3 options are there. Always wipe Dalkvik Cache and /cache partition when applying themes or updating ROMs. Wipe data for NEW Roms

[Q] question on thread "official 5.6.890 (download) not leak"

I am being denied posting abilities on that thread because I don't have 10 posts yet, soo....
Question on the file that was uploaded, when i unrar it to its .zip format, the file is titled "Blur_Version.5.5.959.XT862.Verizon.en.US.zip" not "5.6.890" - how is this the real official OTA then?
And, it is also larger than the leaked 5.6.890 from earlier this month. Is it really legit, and if so, why is the .zip file titled wrong? Sounds fishy IMO.
EDIT: I was wrong, it's the same size as the previous leak. I'm still confused on the naming tho.
It's named after the system it updates.

Noob question
How do I apply the "official 5.6.890 (download link)" update to my phone? I can get into CWM recovery but when I choose to apply update the only options are /sdcard/update.zip or no. I assume I have to rename but want confirmation that I'm doing this the right way before proceeding.

update does work
Thanks for the replies. I couldn't wait for VZW to decide when my time has come so I downloaded and installed the leaked "official OTA" last night anyway. I didn't have any bloatware frozen or removed. I just root access. The update works great so far.
after the update:
Root access was removed. GTalk with video is now enabled and battery statistics actually make sense now (shows Android OS as the highest usage, along with others i was used to seeing on my D1).
I never noticed any "Blue" hue in my photos prior to updating so i don't have any feedback on that.
My physical keyboard hasn't had any "stickykeys" at all so far. Prior to the update, it was happening almost every time i used it. So to those who blame it on a hardware issue... not sure if you're all correct on that.

[Q] Help a Noob want to root and run Cyanogenmod from stock 2.3.6 GRK39F

Hi there I've got and given some help over in the Acer Iconia A500 forum and now i'm hoping I can receive some over here.
I've always just had the stock version of Android on my Nexus, and now that it looks like it's not going to be updated again I'm ready to Root and Rom.
I'm especially looking forward to pushing a bunch of apps over to the SD card (I'm constantly battling the low memory warning)
There is a lot of information out there on rooting this phone but unfortunately most of it seems a bit dated when I look at the posts. most of it seems to be pre-gingerbread.
So, if I have a stock 2.3.6 GRK39F build, how do I start out?
So far form the Wiki I've managed to get the ADB working and USB drivers (Win 7) installed and have my device acknowledged.
From the wiki I've managed to Unlock the boot loader, and wiped my phone :-(
Now what? what is the next step??
Since I've unlocked the boot loader can I now DL cyanogenmod and install it?
or is there more to do?
What's the diffidence between root and unlocking the bootloader?
Thanks for the help guys. I'm sure this is all easy for you now.

Follow up question. I just unlocked the boot loader so I know I don't have root access.
After I flash cyanogen will i have root access by virtue of running that ROM?
Yes once you flash cm7 you'll have root access.

Help another noob...
I found this thread while trying to make sure I have the most up-to-date links for rooting my new Nexus One, 2.3.6, and GRK39F.
Considering this thread is over a year old, and I wasn't sure what wiki the original poster was referring to, I thought would post to see if there are new developments to rooting my N1...
I'm posting this from xp with google usb ver7 drivers installed through sdk. I also have Windows 7 if I have to use that laptop.
I managed to flash my wife's Stratosphere, but this is really pushing my tech limits....

Read the Nexus One Wiki in this Q&A so you can get a sense of the overall process and then proceed to work on your phone. I recommend that you search rooting process for Nexus One on youtube once you have finished reading the wiki.

I'm glad I rooted and ran CM7 when I did, because about a week after I did all the work my power button crapped out and if not for CM7 and it's "push track ball to wake" feature I would have been SOL.
I haven't gone back to check the links that I used but I know that they worked for me. Good luck mate.
PS I managed to eek another 6 months of use out of my device before retiring it and getting a G Nexus.
Thank you for your responses. Yesterday, I tried rooting without unlocking the bootloader, and it seemed like everything performed as expected, but several apps that require rooting said that my N1 is not rooted. So, I tried rooting, but I'm only getting "Waiting for device." I open the command prompt from the Platform-tools folder, SDK shows that I have the necessary drivers installed...
I'll go back and read the Wiki as suggested, and see what I can learn.
Thanks, again!
