New Nexus One - copying text and fingerprint issues - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got my Nexus One and I'm very impressed. Just two things that I wish to clear up:
1. Fingerprint impressions are much too easily left on the screen. Will a screen protector help? I suppose nothing else can really be done about that?
2. More importantly, why is copying text so hard on the default browser? I've played with the HTC Desire and the way it's done on that phone is beautiful i.e. dragging two endpoints and then having an option to refer the selected text to Wikipedia or a dictionary etc. Is that an HTC-only thing or is it something can be imported to the Nexus One?
3. The default Gmail application still doesn't allow copying/selection of text, does it?
Cheers.

1. Yes
2. Try flashing desire rom maybe?
3. You can't

Can't comment on 2, but...
1. This is a problem with all touchscreen phones. Some screen protectors are good and some are terrible. Regardless, you will have to wipe down the screen from time to time. The frequency depends on how clean your fingers are.
3. Froyo just introduced copy and paste in the gmail app. Just press menu button > more > select text. It will copy what you selected into the clipboard. After that, paste wherever you please.

Thanks guys.
Pretty surprised with point (2) actually. HTC seems to have gotten their browser UI spot on. Is the default browser on the Nexus One the best?

Good news. Hopefully the Wikipedia/Dictionary lookups are also included with Froyo. And better selection of text.

check out dolphin browser. the default browser is very good, and if you use the TRACKBALL to select text in default, it works very nicely. i agree the touchscreen method is poorly done on the default browser.
screen protector = no finger prints.

I get plenty of prints on my protector, but its the best protector I've found so far. Which do you use?
Also, I'm banking on gingerbread fixing the copy paste issue, Android introduced it so long ago its really pathetic it hasn't been improved. I can't even use it how it is. But I have a feeling a it is part of the UI that will be modified for 3. 0

Lets hope so. I find HTC's implementation to be perfect! I tried the Dolphin browser, it's good but it doesn't make the selection of text any easier. I suppose that's a ROM issue.
Another tiny detail, the reply button in the Gmail app being right at the end of message - they should fix that too - show it at both ends of the message.

Touchscreens are always painful here. The N1 is no worse than an iPhone / iPod Touch or anything else out there.

The Trackball is your friend - once you get used to using it to move the cursor and select text, you will laugh at how slow and difficult the "drag a knob" method is.

Yes it does - Froyo (finally) added this feature. In any Gmail, just hit the menu button, then select "More", and you will see "Select Text".
Good lesson for you if you are new to "vanilla" Android: ALWAYS try the menu button or long-presses if you are searching for a way to do something.

If you can see fingerprints, your screen is on the wrong brightness (or you just have really greasy fingers).

Actually I really notice them only when the screen is dark. Once I start working on it, it's not noticeable. Still, I'll be a getting a screen protector.
How difficult is to get the Desire ROM on the Nexus One? And is it advisable/inadvisable?

You might not be familiar with the concept of how to use it. There is a tutorial on on that. I have not had any problems.
EDIT: Actually, there is a problem. When I search in the market using this keyboard it occupies the entire screen and I can't see what I'm typing

It seems like it doesn't interpret fields correctly. Typing a document is no problem (QuickOffice HD). Maybe it's best to switch to the android keyboard for that anyway since it will only be a few words to type.
EDIT: After playing with it for a few days I am disappointed. In landscape mode the entire screen is filled with an empty field and I can't see what I'm typing. It's only useful in portrait mode, really Nice concept but definitely needs more work! Maybe even make the entire keyboard smaller in landscape so you don't have to slide so much. Just my 2cents.
I have tried to change the text from white to black so it shows in the field, but i have had no luck. If anyone wants to take a crack at, be my guest. It would be sweet. Right now this keyboard is only useful on the web.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
for some reason slide-it keyboard started having a similar problem after the last update. While in landscape the text would be white on a white background and thus for all intents and purposes, invisible.
in slide-it though you can now disable full screen in landscape and enter text directly into your intended field instead of a white window.
Anyway I wonder if this has something to do with honeycomb or why it happened to both these keyboards at the same time? hmm

Tips for coping with an un-rooted device

There are a lot of threads here and in the VZW forum about how terrible this device is, etc, without root. I'm a former flash-a-holic and my last several devices have all been Samsung on stock, albeit rooted, firmware. those of us preferring touchwiz have our reasons, and those who prefer aosp have theirs, but this isn't a "why we can't have aosp" thread, this is about making lemonade with what we have.
so, my reasons for wanting root, and how I worked around them:
1. ad blocking. I LOVE adaway, its seriously the first app I'd install on a new device after rooting. without root, give adblock plus a try. you can turn off the status bar notifications in the app and by ticking the box in the app manager.
its simple enough to disable apps on WiFi, just input the proxy host name and port and you're done. I hadn't ever found a clear and concise instruction on how to do this with mobile data, so here it is- create a NEW APN and copy all of the info from the stock APN, and add the proxy host name and port. done, you now have ad blocking on WiFi and mobile data, without root, and without persistent notifications.
2. de-bloating. first, the s5 has less bloat than the s3 or s4, but its still there. it is INCREADIBLY easy to disable or uninstall on this device. go to the app drawer and press the settings icon (or long press the app switcher button) and select uninstall/disable apps. if its ATT or Samsung, and you don't want it, odds are you can either uninstall or disable it. just make sure that in Samsung Apps you disable automatic updates over WiFi. you can also hide them.
myth busting time: IF you were rooted, and IF you manually removed bloat apps, you do NOT gain ANY additional usable space in device storage.
3. tether bypass. there are multiple threads here on how to do this. I have a 10gb plan so its a non issue here.
4. Writing to extSDcard. most built in apps like the browser, email, and camera will save to the ext SD card. so will my files, which is actually a LOT better than on the s3 or s4.
5. removing bloat bookmarks from the stock browser. I prefer the stock browser over chrome, call me crazy. I also don't like the 4 pre-loaded bookmarks being in my list. I saw a tip here to just create a folder called My Bookmarks or whatever you like and put your bookmarks there. the bloat is still there but its not staring you in the face.
so what else have you guys been doing to get functionality that was easy and convenient with root, but still attainable without?

Speed- I find that a lot of people nag about speed, my phone is fluid in all ways. Three factors play into this, using the TW launcher, animation speed, one last tricky one-- S-Voice has a delay on the home button waiting for the possible hook in for user prompting it. My standpoint is you can get from a TW rom the kind of speed or more that you can with a rom somebody else pre-tweaked for you.
Remedies below.
1. Get Nova Launcher (you can look into others if you like, if you want an experienced users perspective on speed, use Nova it flies)
2. Enable Developer Options(click About Device, click build number until it says Dev mode is enabled), Turn OFF animations for Transition window animation scale, transition animation scale and animator duration scale.
3. Open up S Voice (through the double-tap shortcut or in the app drawer). Tap the menu button in the top right corner (three dots) and find the "Open via home key" option under "Wake-up." Disable for slightly faster home button response.
Some people may find this abrupt transition between applications off putting at first but once you give it an hour the phone is flying so fast I could never go back. Enjoy!
As mentioned above:
Nova Launcher
Transitions at .5 or OFF
De-bloating (see this thread)
And - tasker, tasker, tasker!
My tip.. simple but I'm a customize nerd.
iFont available for free from the Play store allows you to add hundreds of fonts to your phone right from the app, and is compatible with the font selection from settings - display. You can also load fonts from the internet or your computer and use that as your default font.
The one lag, I still can't stand... despite all the animations being off is the lag between camera and gallery... like I take a photo, click the little image to view it and it sits there for at least 15 seconds before the gallery opens up. Anyone else have this issue?? I'm so used to CM based roms and still try to swipe to view the gallery LOL

This could be due to your SD card. If you are saving pics to external SD and your card is a lower class it will read and write data in a longer time frame. If you are using internal memory and not the SD card slot then I'm not sure. Backup everything and try a factory reset. I personally don't have an SD card, I don't see the need without root. Also it takes about 3 seconds for me to do what takes you 15. That's why I think an SD might be the Culprit here
There is 1 thing you can not do without root that is needed for me. I own a Pioneer Appradio and use ARUnchained which requires root. If you don't know what it is then look it up. It basically mirrors your phone and lets you use touch on Pioneers Appradio. I used this with my GS3 and if I would have known we wouldn't have root after this long I would have kept it and not bought the GS5. There is no getting around root for this. Pioneer's stock app has restrictions and doesn't let you mirror everything where as ARUnchained solves this problem.
I would like to find a way to save stuff from Dropbox to the external memory.

The menu button function is still there ... just long-press the recent apps button. If you've got a specific app that doesn't display the 3-dots menu somewhere on the screen, you might want to reach out to the developer. That's part of modern Android UX standards. I recently reached out to Untappd and they updated their app to include it pretty quickly.

Ah, gotcha. Unfortunately, short of root reassigning buttons, I don't think that's a desire that will see much traction in the future now that the UX standards require on-screen menus and more devices are coming out without any soft buttons at all. When you get down to it though, you're either tapping the bottom-left of your device or you're tapping the three dots on the screen.
Awesome app called quick click, let's you map your volume buttons for flashlight and a lot of others actions, just throwing it out there missed using xposed, mods with that.

[Q] Couple of Questions

I've used the S5 and figured out how to disable the magazine app, well, the S6 has a similar feature that uses Flipboard. I haven't been able to figure out how to disable.
Also, I have NO IDEA how to create a folder in the App Drawer.

Dunno about about the folders but you can hide (but maybe not disable) the Flipboard screen by unchecking its box in the "rearrange home screens" mode.

While the wrap around effect is long gone in TouchWiz, it is still implemented on most third party launchers. And call me crazy, but someone with so much experience should know how to simply add new pages and reassign the home page.

I wasn't asking how to rearrange home screens. The feature is alive and well in the 4. Don't see any benefit to removing it, but you're not really here for help or a discussion. Just to be argumentative and condescending.

Screen Write Problem: Cannot get back to annotated screen if switching to another app

I am having a problem with my Note 5 on Verizon and want to see if anyone else is having the same issue. if you pick up the stylus and choose Screen Write, and then switch to another application, there is no way to get back to your annotated screen earlier. Can anyone confirm that this is the case. Samsung support says it works fine.

So does anyone know how to fix it? That is kind of a problem particularly when the Note 5 is for taking notes..... Otherwise what is the point??
Scratch that, can't do it with multi window either.
I did it. I opened chrome, pulled out the same s-pen, and started screen write. Then using lmt launcher I opened messages. Using the back button to get out of messages took me back to chrome with the screen write still active.
I think the problem is once the screen is cleared which happens when choosing recents or going to the app drawer, screen write gets cancelled.

No because that requires clearing the screen, which clears screen write.
Just save it in the Gallery. You can open the Gallery and annnotate til your hearts content. The Gallery is Multi View so you can reference other apps at the same time if you want to. I use Screen Write to capture something interesting for business or funny/cute to share with friends. The former I save in folders in Scrapbook and the latter I MMS or e-mail. So for me it's not broken.

If you save it to the galery, and you write and have to switch again, then you still lose the contents. It seems to me more like a bug rather than a feature particularly when that is supposed to be the purpose of using it for annotation.
My plan was to use this for feature for meetings. You are going over the agenda etc. and then you want to take notes on top of an existing document and then save it or share it to Evernote etc.
I use S Note for everything you described. That's what it's designed for. Screen Write is for quickly capturing and annotating something. It's not even a persistent app which is why it goes away when it loses focus. And what difference does it make if you annotate<>save or save <>annotate?

Agreed, new "feature", could help on image heavy page when only need read text.
I noticed it only appears when at very top of loaded page and disappears when scroll just a few lines. It will reappear if you need/want it by scroll back to top.

Strange as Chrome claimed via Plsy Store to be last updated August 1st. I just flashed a new version of my ROM with an older Chrome, and I do not see the pop-up. Really wish it would be turned off.
Best guess: this is a server-side change on Google's part. This would explain how it could pop up now despite Cbrome not having been updated since August 3rd. It would also explain my receiving the prompt on the astronomy picture of the day site with desktop mode off. APOD doesn't have a mobile version and its pages are dominated by its astronomy photos, so I get prompted.
You can do this to disable it:
- Navigate to chrome://flags
- Search for text "Reader Mode"
- Change the setting of "Reader Mode triggering" to "Never"
Well color me blind. I didn't think Chrome for Android had chrome:// support, which is why I gave the answer I did. I personally got used to that popup, but it's good to know it can be removed, so I did.

Glad to be of some help on my first post to XDA ever. But to be honest, i found the solution on google and this thread at the same time. Don't know if i need to credit the source where i found the info. I'm not a developer and don't know if that is a proper thing to do.
Crediting your sources never hurts.
