Hi
Is their anyway I could force android to use ONLY the 3G UMTS network ? it keeps jumping to 2g randomly and the download speed drops from 500kb/s to 15 !!!! So its really pissing me off.
If anyone has ANY idea how to do this, please let me know
Krgrds,
Waseem
Well sometimes 3G networks aren't available and your phone can't connect to them. So it uses 2G networks to preserve the download and the connection
Download Any Cut from the market.
Make a short cut using Activity.
Select Phone Info.
Select from the drop down list towards the bottom "WCDMA only".
there is an option on the hero rom to use only 3g networks

If you did this and were downloading something you would get tons of dropped connections. T-Mobiles 3G is still kinda in its beginning stages and isn't near as available or reliable as the bigger networks (Sprint/verizon/AT&T)

Dude.....YOUR A GENIUS
Thanks abunch for the suggestion !! Yea..it worked just fine
I would have never guessed that one !!
Thanks to everyone else who contributed ! appreciate your help !.
The reason I wanted this is because my G1 sometimes suddenly drops the 3G and goes to 2g in a zone where 3G signal is excellent and im downloading at 400kb.s but for some wierd reason it switches to 2G and I have to wait untill it decides to switch back to 3G. But thats solved now.......FINALLY

That makes sense. I'll have to keep that in mind when STL eventually gets damn 3G
thank you!!!
On my operator (italian - TIM) i was going from 4mbit to 8kbit on "edge"
my operator thanks you also (as i was going to switch to another operator with better coverage)
Set phone for only 3G (WCDMA)
There is yet another way...
From the dialer, type exactly:
*#*#4636#*#*
After a moment, a screen will appear called "Testing". Select the drop-down that says "Phone Information". From there, scroll down to where it should say "WCDMA preferred", and change it to "WCDMA only". Use the back key to get out. It should stay selected even through a reboot.
This works on CRC1 (the latest US 1.5 "Cupcake" ROM) but I can't say for sure if it will work for other phones (myTouch) or other markets (UK).
It's essentially the same as AnyCut/BetterCut, you're just using a different way to get there. This uses more battery than 2G (GSM), but everyone already knew that, right?

I tried this with Internet Radio in the Car and it seem to cut out less often, just wondered if there was any other way to increase the 3G signal on the phone as it has not external connector for a 3g antenna, is it possible to solder a connector in, is there any know mod, it would be so cool to listen to internet radio without so many cut outs.
Hi all i am also trying to do this. I have createt The shortcut just fine but if i follow the shortcut and choose from the dropdown menu It doesnt remember the settings when i quit... And there is no save/apply button. Or is there something i am missing here?? please if someone can help i will be wery happy
Well, for me I just choose WCDMA and wait for a few seconds untill the 3G signal appears then just hit the back button and thats it. Its forced to use 3G only. No need to push any save buttons.
Confirmed not working here either, select wcdma, come out of menu, go back in, and it's already changed it back to gsm/cdma auto. Seems it refuses to apply settings.
Galaxy S on t-mobile uk.
Working good using any cut. Thanks!
wtf
this toatly messed up my phone, i swhiched to wcdma preferd and my data speeds have competly crashed, when i go to change it it now says unknown and dosent save my choice

in my case it does apply settings, soft of. Switching GSM only ---> WCDMA only, all my bars immediately appear and I the phone starts getting a signal. The settings remain there if I check repeatedly. However the setting do not survive the the phone reboot. It goes back to "GSM only" mode and I have no reception. I can help it changing the settings again, but it is quite annoying.
Started happening to my phone after I travelled with it to east europe. Had some troubles there making it work with their sim-card and had to call the provider. They must have fixed something in my phone remotely. Now I'm back to asia and this is kind of **** is happening.
So the *#*#4636#*#* GSM battery fix has been all over but I am unsure if it actually changes anything.
Here is what I have found:
I do the the *#*#4636#*#* dial, go to phone info, hit menu, then select radio band, force close, change to CDMA auto (PRL), then hit home.
Now here is the problem. Hold down home for recent programs and go back into testing (I found doing the *#*#4636#*#* lags and kills my phone sometimes). Hit Menu, force close, and take a look at what the preferred network type is: GSM.
As a test to the “visual glitch” theory, I changed the type to GSM/CDMA auto, when I return to the test menu, GSM/CDMA auto stays. So this menu is showing what it is actualy set to.
Every time you go to menu and select radio, the force close shuts off the radio and the menu says GSM. Is there really a “visual glitch” or does the GSM show because of the procedure followed??
Also it is referring to the PRL, which is the roaming list provided by Sprint, which is not going to have any GSM listing anyway.
I am not an expert by any means but there is more to this mystery then everyone is lead to believe. Battery life is a big issue and I am unsure if the “solution” is actually helping people.
The Time Without Signal fix works. Here's why.
Hitting menu and causing the force close causes it to reset to default. If you actually set it to GSM auto PRL, it is reading the Sprint towers off the PRL, and searching for a GSM signal at the same time. Try changing it to GSM only, and seeing if that causes the TWS to rise dramatically.
This solution was only meant to help people who's phones were searching for a non-CDMA signal.
Do we know if this is still a problem with the offical Sprint 2.1 update?
It hasn't been a problem for a few months now.

I did not know that, I wonder how many people are doing this needless now.
I have been running fresh 2.1.1 and do it every time I reboot. No wonder I never saw a difference!

So if my phone is CONSTANTLY at 50% +/- TWS... is this normal or should I change something?

You should follow my guide on how to reduce it. It's in the sticky wiki.
Recently bought a Samsung I897 Captivate. Its a unlocked phone and I'm using it in Argentina with Movistar. My previous phone was a Motorola Milestone, and it sometimes changed the connection from 3G / HSDPA to 2G (EDGE), in 3G areas. The solution was to go to APN settings, enable "2G only", then disabling it, and the phone instantly switched to 3G again.
However, the Captivate doesn't have such option. Setting the phone to Flight Mode its useless, it will keep connecting in 2G.
Only solution I found at the moment was to go to Network Mode (*#0011#) then navigate to Network Control => Band Selection, selecting WCDMA only, and then enabling Automatic again.
That seems to reset the connection.
I searched in the market for free and paid apps to help me fix this issue, but I found nothing, only the Toggle 2G app, but it only works with Cyanogen Mod.
I have some questions:
If I set the connection to WCDMA only, then I'll have no signal at all in 2G areas, right?.
Does anyone know a quicker way to do this?. I tried to make a shortcut to ServiceMode with dg Quickcut but when I try to open it it crashed the phone.
Thanks in advance.

as of right now, there is no "fix" for this. the best you COULD do is to flash Eugene's VibrantHybrid ROM where the "use 2g networks only" option does exist, but you'll lose GPS (for now)

Thanks for the quick reply Kaik541.
Does the signal strength improve with that rom?.
Currently I'm using I897UCJH7 from samfirmware.

you should revert back to JH3 if you're going to use Hybrid (I don't believe JH7 is compatible yet, there are some issues that cropped up with SRE, so it would be safer to do JH3, or even better JF6). I've seen slightly better reception and MUCH better battery life running Hybrid

It seems it will be updated soon.
Maybe I'll give it a try.
Do you know if it removes the 850 band?.
I need it, because my carrier uses it for WCDMA.
Try this:
1. In the Market, download Any Cut. (This is a free app) 2. open Any Cut and choose New Shortcut 3. select Activity 4. Scroll down the list until you get to Phone Info 5. Select OK. (this will place the short cut on your homescreen) 6. Open the shortcut and scroll down until you see "Set Preferred Network Type" 7. Choose GSM only and you are set. This forces the phone to EGDE
I used this to force edge. Use google to download AnyCut, it doesn't exist on the market for the unknown reason

I just discovered Juice Defender. One of its features is to set phone to 2G automatically (seems very configurable). I haven't really had a chance to test it, but thought I'd mention it to you anyway

Thanks a lot. I use dg Quickcut for that.
But, I don't need to force EDGE, I need a way to force 3G .
The phone usually switchs to EDGE in 3G areas, and I need to change it back to 3G.
I've used your suggestion to make such shortcut, changed it to WCDMA only, clicked the Disable Radio button twice (because it didn't changed to 3G), and when it switched back to 3G, I changed back the network to GSM / CDMA auto.
What about WCDMA preferred?. Will it try to allways connect to 3G?.
can yall not just dial * # * # 4636 #*#* scroll to the bottom and chnage it there, just so happens i posted a how to earlier in the general section, works on stock ROMS afaik.
also GPS still works

Thanks, but Mesasone pointed me to a great app in the market.
Its called Samservmode. It opens service mode without entering any codes.
Anyways, thanks for your help .
I don't get the greatest battery life with HSDPA enabled, I also only get 1-3 bars which I know isn't helping my battery life at all.
I tried this below.
Enter the Phone app.
Dial *#*#197328640#*#*
Select [1] DEBUG SCREEN
Select [8] PHONE CONTROL
Select [4] UE STATE CONTROL
If you want 2G, select:
[3] CHANGE RAT TO GSM
If you want 3G, select:
[2] CHANGE RAT TO WCDMA

It works, I get 4-5 bars w/ EDGE. But when I get a phone call and talk on the phone. Weird things happen. Suddenly my phone mutes and the backlight turns off and on. This doesn't happen when it's set to 3G.
I tried this one below.
Dial *#*#2263#*#* (mnemonic: *#*#BAND#*#* for band selection)
Select [3] GSM BAND
Select [1] GSM ALL
Select "Select GSM All Bands"
Menu key > END
Click to collapse
But it doesn't allow me to change anything. I get some "RAT is blocked" or something message.
Not sure what to do, any suggestions? Details of my phone are in my sig.
Update.
It's still not sticking on GSM mode. It just switches itself back to 3G. That's without turning it off or turning on Airplane mode.
Are you running a ROM or kernel? If you are have you tried switching the ROM or using a different Modem to see if that helps you?

Running the stock 2.2 ROM w/ SpeedMOD kernel.
I would flash another modem, but two things.
1. can't seem how to do so.
2. it seems that there is only one ROM that will work. and it's the stock one installed. unless i go to a i9000 based ROM that has many different modems.

To disable hspa. Hspa adds some drain, but what can really kill battery is if the signal isn't good enough to reliably hold am hspa connection and it switches back and forth constantly. .

Yeah, when I switch it to GSM mode. I get 4-5 bars, but whenever I get a phone call. It wants to switch itself back to 3G.
I've used that code to turn off HSDPA, but it continues to say so in the Status menu. Not sure what's going on lol.
Hi,
I own a LG Optimus 2x (P990) running on stock GB with 0725 baseband. One major problem I'm facing with it is it keeps losing the signal completely. After researching online, I found out about the 4636 hidden menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and then changing the network type to GSM auto (PRL). This helped a little. However, the settings dont "stick". After few days, or sometimes, a couple of hours, they go back to WCDMA preferred which causes a complete loss of connectivity for me. How do I save these settings? I dont really use 3G as its not feasible in my region yet. Can someone please suggest something?
Why didn't you just change it at the settings menu under wireless & network? You can set to 'only use 2g network'.

I've tried that before going into the hidden menu. Same thing happens. After sometime, it kinda forgets that its supposed to use GSM and reverts to WCDMA
Happens to me too, i am on temasek's Kang, although it happens randomly and isnt that frequent in my phone so i dont worry bout it much.
Even its random for me. But when it happens, I end up missing calls and texts coz of it. Its soo irritating when the phone is unable to perform its basic functions correctly. I really dont understand why does the device revert back to WCDMA when i'm telling it to use GSM
Turn OFF and then ON phone.
Set to 2G only and save
Turn phone OFF/ON
I was just fighting against the opposite, I want it to be on WCDMA only but the config was resetting every time I restarted the phone or causing signal loss. A few minutes ago I matched the RIL with the baseband even with recommendation and it just worked!
