[REQ][HOW TO] Recover deleted SMS after rewrite - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What happended was I wiped my data, reflashed a new ROM, got a collection of SMS's. Without thinking the next day, i did my Titanium Backup restore on everything. Including my SMS's.....
Now i know the SMS's are stored in a SQLlite database called mmssms.db. And it would have been overwritten. So is there any way to recover the old SMS's that are now overwritten?
I doubt there is, but if there is any method to recover the file, could someone please help? Thanks in advance!
(Btw, running Kang-O-Rama 0.9 SP3, and using Handcent SMS)

PIM Backup 2.8 - Restore Questions

Hello. I've backed up the SMS messages into a file and I disabled binary mode. The backup file looked like it was successful. When I viewed the file though, it looked like it was saved in binary format.
Regardless, I deleted one SMS message and then attempted to restore using the option that does NOT delete all messages before hand. I want to make sure the restore works before risk losing all (about 1100) the SMS messages.
Once I started the restore, it ran for 10 minutes and did not look like it was doing anything. My questions: does the option to restore without deleting all messages before hand actually work? How long can I expect a restore to take with the above options and roughly 1100 SMS messages? The most important thing I'm looking for is being able to view the SMS messages at a later date, not necessarily on the phone, which is why I tried the first backup without the binary option.
I also took another backup and saved it in binary format and tried to restore just the SMS messages from that file, but it ran for about 10 minutes and didn't appear to be doing anything either.
Thanks for all the help!

[Q] Need help recovering SMS messages

Hi guys, here's the thing:
Yesterday I was given my friend's HTC Dream and told to get the CM6.1 working. Since that she used to have a 1.6 ROM called Bonsai. I was told to get as much data from it as possible. The reason to change the ROM was that the phone was unable to import contacts from a SIM card and some other minor problems, so the girl said that Bonsai is crap and she wants to go back to Donut Of course I suggested the CM6.1 instead. I also told her that we can copy the contacts via SIM card reader, upload them to Gmail and get them back to Dream, but she kinda liked the idea of having a working Froyo on her device, but that's not the point.
So what I did was:
1. Titanium backup
2. Nandroid backup
3. New 2.22.28.25 radio, recovery (recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-cyan).
4. CM 6.1 DS + gapps.
5. Titanium restore.
I restored all of the apps, previously installed on Bonsai, the phone finally started importing the contacts and messages from SIM card, I got all the apps settings and data as well. But I can't get the SMS and MMS messages from the phone's memory back to the inbox...
Is there a way to get them back?
I got the nand backup and the Titanium backup. I didn't set it to run automatically yet, so I think it didn't overwrite the old copy with a new empty one or something Is there a way to recover the messages?
Thank you in advance for any help.
Anyone have an idea?
You are probably hosed. Switching between ROMs sometimes the saved SMS/MMS and Call Log data doesn't get loaded correctly. My guess is they may use a different version (maybe an earlier AOSP release) of the application, so it won't read the backup properly.
I did find other's who's had the problem here.
It does blow, but at least the phone is in working order, right?
EDIT: I was talking with a buddy of mine who dev's for the Vibrant forums (Br1ck'd). He said since you haven't created an additional backup yet, you can go back to the original ROM (Bonsai) and then do a restore. Once the restore is done, use a different SMS backup method (for SMS and for call log) and then reflash to CM 6.1. Then use Titanium Backup to restore all information, and then restore the SMS/Call Log using the respective application.
Thanks for the advice and links, I already though of restoring the 1.6 ROM and trying some other backup method, but I was hoping there is another method.
The CM6 was being used now for few weeks now, so I don't think wiping the call logs and messages AGAIN to restore older ones would be a good idea. Or is it? Will I be able to backup the data (CM6) now, then nand restore (to 1.6), sync the messages in another app (or any PC sync program), go back to CM and somehow sync it again to 'mix' the data?
Or is there any other way to read the messages from Titanium / Nandroid and covert them into any kind of a readable text file? A PC program to read this data from a backup file (without restoring it on the phone) or something?

[Q] can't restore contact from titanium backup

HI there
i recently restored my phone after flashing a different rom. everything went well and i restored almost everything using titanium backup. i clicked for "install missing apps and data" but unfortunately i could not restore my phone contacts. my contacts are also not synced with gmail. please help?
Did you click on the button in the top middle to bring up the list of programs, and restore contacts then reboot?(assuming you backed it up of course). Cause all it sounds like you did was that batch restore of MISSING apps. The contacts.apk was included so it didn't get restored.
i'm curious about this too. I dont need to restore my contacts but I've installed custom roms for a few friends who didnt have their contacts sync'd with gmail and after restoring what I thought was the contacts, it didnt actually restore.
so I've had this problem before, too. I'm curious to hear from someone who successfully restored phone contacts from TiBu.
Always sync your contacts with Google
I never used TiBu for contacts or calendar entries.

Not sure if this thread is dead or not but I just flashed my brother's phone and used TiBu to restore missing apps + data. For contacts I tried restoring [Contacts/Calls] Storage 2.2, rebooted and still nothing. I dont know what else can I do now. Is there any way I can pull the information out manually from TiBu backup files? I opened com.android.providers.contacts-20110625-144656.tar.gz and noticed the raw data is in the files. Any ideas would be helpful....
Thanks!

Did he sync contacts with his Google account? If so sign into Gmail from the phone and sync. I use the Backup with Gmail from the market to backup calls and texts too. All of my call history, contacts, and texts are synching with my Gmail, works great.

Restart the phone after restoring apps and system data.
When it comes to backing up my contact list I'm Old School. I still do it the same way I did on my Palm OS device. Export to a vCard file (*.vcf). Since android still has that feature I occasionally make a backup of my contacts as a *.vcf and copy it to my SD card, PC or dropbox. However, after reading this post I gave it a try and successfully restored my contacts, txt messages, call logs etc with TiBu. After a restore (I was able to confirm that the 'Restore missing apps + all system data' batch restore will restore your contacts etc. However they don't show in your contact list after a restore. You can try to force close the Contacts and Contact storage from the 'Manage Applications' -> 'Running' screen, and when you restart your contacts after that they should appear. However tried and true method is the simplest.
=> Do a Re-boot.
I tried it successfully four times and doing a restart of the phone worked the best, smoothest and easiest. Then all my contacts were successfully restored.
I performed this on a I897 running FireFly 3.0.2.2 (Froyo based ROM) I used the latest version of TiBu 3.9.0.1 free version and made sure that busybox was updated to 1.18.4
If you're worried about TiBu not working, exporting your contacts to a *.vcf file does give you a nice file that you can then import natively into Android and most other mobile OS. (I've personally verified that *.vcf works on Pantech and Lg messaging phones, Palm OS, Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Thunderbird, Outlook)

Yea, don't use TiBU to restore any system apps like contacts or messaging ESPECIALLY when changing roms/android os versions.
I would recommend backing up ur contacts to your google account. Also, see if u can find a .vcf file in your TiBU backup

[SOLVED] Unable to restore sms xml file

Got a problem, could anybody please make any sense?
I had 19k sms messages on my SGS+ and I backed them up with SMS Backup & Restore. Everything went fine. Now, after flashing my device to Ultragen v1.7 Rom, I am not able to restore my messages back. When I try to restore, it shows progress screen approx. to 125/15453 and then suddenly disappears. And I am like what the heck?
The same story with Titanium backup, it does not even starts to restoring xml file.
After that I was looking forward to restore sms&mms from nandroid backup, but the fact is, following tutorial about flashing Ultragen v1.7 ROM there was a stupid point of formating card, so my nandroid backup was destroyed.
What's wrong?
Problem solved. Restoring sms from .xml file completly in one row was not possible in one or another way. But restoring manually one by one each thread was possible via SMS Backup & Restore simply "viewing" backuped file and then restoring every thread.
Maybe this helps for somebody.

[Q] SMS Restore Problem with Titanium on CM7 (RESOLVED)

Hi!
Update: Issue is resolved! I used the pre cm7 nandroid backup to export my messages to myphoneexplorer, then reapplied cm7 the same way and imported from mpe.
I recently upgraded from miui-ger_MILESTONE_2.4.6 to CM-7.2.4f (2.3.7).
Prior to the upgrade I did a comprehensive backup of my applications using Titanium Backup (v6.0.?) and I'm trying to restore that backup now. While this works for all my non-system apps, wlan, bluetooth and gmail account settings it somehow fails for SMS history:
I have an entry titled '[SMS/MMS/APN] Dialer Storage 2.3.7' which contains all the messages in question and I can restore it's data or the app+data without any error. After several tries and reboots SMS history still remains empty. I'm sure my old texts are still there because Titanium lets me export data from the backup to a csv file.
Any idea what is going on or what I should try to troubleshoot this would be much appreciated!
