Autostarts (Must HAVE)

Hi fellow XDA'rs.
As most you probably know, the way android and most os's works, every time you start up your device some/many apps startup with it.
This certainly bogs things down on startup but also in the long run when they stay resident idling in mem.
Android allows apps to register for events that are then started whenever triggered.
For example, on my phone prior to getting this app, everytime I pressed the camera button Camera, SMS commander (WTF), ChompSMS (WTFF), and Snaphotopro ran code. I could even see it happening in a task manager.
Sometimes apps stay in memory indefinitely after doing something irrelevant to their function like clicking camera/downloading something .
So I disabled everything except my main camera and everything still works the same, but ONLY SnapPhoto runs code and uses memory.
The real place i think autostarts shines is that it not only allows you to selectively disable what starts on boot, but also control what happens on every event.
It's on the market for like 98cents or some crap, and I REALLY think we should support the dev for this top-notch app.
It does way more for me than overclocking etc.. and i'm not advertising LOL.
What do you guys think??

i used it before, but i noticed that if you disable some apps on startup, it will make those apps not function anymore. for example, i remember i disabled the default message app and a bunch of other "normal" apps, and then i would not get any SMS anymore or some of my apps stopped loading. also even after you uninstall the app, it would not return to normal. they listed this as a bug for the version i tried so i couldnt restore the apps i disabled.
right now i just use advance task manager and put the one click widget on my home screen. so after every event i get in the habit of just clickin that widget and it iwll close all apps. and everything works fine.

That's true. Disabling messaging will prevent you from getting sms's even if you have chompsms, chomp's main functionality is as a front-end to the messaging app, not the core. This is not the apps fault
The reason I made this post is so we could compile a list of apps that are okay to disable and aren't. I forget to mention that in the OP .
I will edit the first post with the list but I need input from the community.
So far..

For the most part disabling stock apps isn't the brightest idea.
Autostarts will warn you when you try to disable a stock component.
Also you can view only non-stock apps, if you don't want to mess with the settings.
Some can be disabled without any apparent trouble.
In my case..
Maps (Disabled on startup without issues)
Clock (Disabled on start without any issues thus far)
Camera (Disabled Stock camera from running when camera button is pressed without issue)
Pico TTS (A text-to-speech thing that runs code every time an app is installed Disabled without issue)
MP3 Store (Runs code whenever an app is replaced, disabled, no issues)
There are several more instances of the same apps that are disabled.
So far no FC's or problems. I've reduced the amount of times I need to end all apps by about 90%
Feel free to help add to the list!

I don't disable any stock apps as they seem to die by themselves after a while. Meanwhile I disable pretty much all 3rd party apps (except things like Sim Checker).
This app is amazing!
By the way, if you disable "Widget updating" it also removes unwanted widgets (I tend not to use any).

I havent actually tried it, but i'll remember that if I ever have too many widgets in the list.
Another tip is to check out Menu -> View.
You can enable the unknown's and have more options to disable

Is anyone else annoyed by devs who don't allow their apps to be purchased through your T-Mobile account? Something about putting $0.99 on my credit card annoys me. No biggie, but it would be nice if that option was available for this app.

Well what can we do except take it

I use Startup Auditor, works pretty well, compared to Autostarts. I also believe it doesn't list anything that would damage your bootup.

I hadn't heard of Startup Auditor either, but after reading about it, it seems a little more appealing than Autostarts. Especially the part about not disabling anything important from starting. Thanks!

Startup auditor isn't bad.
It doesn't have even a third of the options as autostarts though.
I tried it and although the GUI was nice, and it worked, the lack of choices made me uninstall it in a matter of minutes.
Also, if you're worried about messing up your phone with autostarts just go to Menu -> View -> Hide System Apps and its pretty much the same thing as startup auditor.

I just purchased Startup Auditor and it seems like a nice app. However, I disabled a few apps and then rebooted. When the reboot finished, some of the apps that I had just disabled were still running! I've e-mailed the dev and will post if I get a response. Has anyone else experienced this with Startup Auditor or any other startup app?

I've been using Autostarts for a while and I really notice the difference on boot up time. Before Autostarts it would take forever to boot up the system, then it would be super sluggish. Now since it doesn't start nearly half the apps on boot, it's much faster.
Some apps I question on why it's doing what it's doing. Like Tunewiki for instance. Why does it need to start when an application is replaced or removed? Cleared those out and everything is much speedier!

A lot of them are triggered by strange things.
Like you said, tunewiki when adding or replacing an app.
I think this is their way of staying in the background, which speeds up opening tunewiki but at the cost of slowing everything else down.
I hate developers that do this..

How does the system determine which apps to run at boot?

Whenever i try to disable the amazon mp3 autostart the program tells me to wait and gets stuck on the please wait screen... Any clue if this is normal operation?

amazon mp3 does not seem to want to be disabled.
edit: i think i figured out the problem with amazon mp3. you have to disable it in two places, once in the after startup but also in the connectivity changed section. also i was having trouble with other programs but i forgot i those had widgets. i think for apps that have widgets will cause those apps to load on start up. if you want to disable them you have to do so in the widgets section. just dont do it for widgets you actually have in use.

Does this app not work on latest superd? i get fc everytime on g1.

Anyone know where there are two (2) Messanger apps AND two (2) Handcent apps listed for after startup?
Seems like I should be able to disable messanger, but from these posts perhaps not.... can I disable handcent with no issues... seems like a text received would trigger it to open with no problems.
Why (and can I stop) is Voice Dialer involved with all changes to applications (installed/removed)?

I was wondering this too. Maybe it starts to read the app names so it can "read" the filename so if you call it through Voice Search it knows what app to call up. Not sure.

Imho, this app is absolutely amazing.
I had the problem, that although i am using Handcent only, still every text was shown as new in the message application as well (and the icon on the homescreen shows one new message). Now i have removed message completely - only my handcent widget shows any test infos
Besides that, i could disable a lot of useless or at least strange applications starts triggered by certain events.
In this point of view, it's very useful, for Galaxy S as well!

Random programs in task manager

A lot of times I will get random programs that I never use listed as open in the task manager. Mp3 store, nba league pass, documents to go, they all keep opening up again even though I never use them. Is there a reason for this? There are other apps that do this too, I just listed the ones I see most often.

Yes, this is normal. Android loads applications until the RAM is almost full, so they're ready to pop up in an instant when you actually launch them. If an application requires more RAM to work with than available, the system will shut down some of the inactive applications.
There are those task auto-killer programs out there that people use because they think it makes their phone run faster or tidied up, but in fact, most of the time they will slow it down because applications will take longer to start. And consume more power, because there's more work to do when starting an app. A properly written application won't consume any power when inactive, and the RAM has to be powered anyway, so that's why you want it to be used as much as possible.

Is there anyway to exclude certain apps from opening up? There are apps on the phone like mp3 store or the stock messaging app that I would never use, so it would be more worthwhile to get the system to keep apps I actually use open instead of just random ones.

Apps automatically starting up, by themselves

Hello all,
I recently bought my N1 about 4 days ago. So far its been great. Easily one of the best phones I've ever owned. However, I am having this problem where apps in android seem to startup by themselves. I'm using Advanced Task killer to kill em but ill kill them and then like a minute later they're back up and running without me starting them. Its quite annoying as my battery is taking a beating from it having to close and open apps and repeat. The biggest offenders of this are the voice apps such as voice search, voice dialer, Google voice (which isn't even setup), and the amazon mp3 store. A few third party apps I downloaded tend to do this as well.
Have any of you guys experienced this? Is there any way to fix it? Thanks in advance! XD

Do not worry about app running in the background, what you are probably seeing is the list of what was run, Android is verry good at managing memory, in fact I do not even use a task manager and I am fine with it.

Well that's the thing. Some of these apps that startup I have never run such as the mp3 store. So I close it and I get an additional 10megs of memory. But then it just starts back up. So I don't know how to stop it all together.

There are apps that automatically run in the background but don't effect performance like Google voice voice dialer etc..what I did was add them to the ignore list. Trust me those apps are always running no matter how many times you close them

Like has already been said, stop worrying about it. Those apps are NOT stealing memory, they're NOT using battery.

Free memory does not benefit you. Android will automatically load apps in to memory so that they are available to switch to fast as possible.
You should not kill apps unless they are bisbehaving. Killing off apps forces Android to load them back into memory if its algorithm thinks you are likely to use it. The act of loading data into memory uses power and Android tries hard to avoid it.
I was obsessed with managing my memory and running apps when I bought my nexus one. Everyone at that time suggested task killers so I got one of those. I had crappy performance with random sluggishness. I figured I just needed to kill off more apps. Eventually I read an article from an Android dev explaining this stuff and I backed off and have had a much better experience since.
I wish Google was more vocal on this subject. Everyone thinking auto task killing is a necessity on Android really gives it a black eye.

Remove your task killer (or, if you insist, just clear the auto-kill list), erase all you think you know about memory management - because you don't know - and stop worrying.

why are apps running when i dont open them? memory leak also..

could be a noob question
every once in a while i will go into my advance task killer and see a bunch of apps running that i didnt manually open. i just checked my phone to see sprint nav, mp3 store, droid locator, internet, ringdroid, etc.. it also takes my phone from 71m free to about 35-40m. ill kill the apps, and they will be open again without me touching the phone. am i stupid, or is there actually a problem?

Okay bc those stock apps are coded to run at startup, and open themselfs for ease-of-access, this is normal. If you want to stop that, add them to autokill, and use a startup manager (market) to remove them from the start up screen.
For the mem issues, try disabling the GPS lovation services, that eats up battery life AND mem, same with internet.

If you really want your phone to fly, don't use a task killer.

In theory this is true but in reality it couldn't be more misleading. Yes a task killer, especially one that is always running and using up resources itself is probably less than optimal in an Android environment, however they are sometimes necessary because things do not always work as they are supposed to. If you have root it is better to just use AutoKiller as it doesn't just kill programs but helps the OS by allowing you to set the limits for when the OS should start closing things. It also allows you to manually kill anything not working right.
Of course this is just my opinion, but I have tried it both ways on 3 different Android phones and my results were the same on all.

There's a section at the bottom that goes over this.
It's really more of an explanation that "Having free RAM will make my phone faster" will not make your phone faster.

battery died overnight

I charged my phone last night to 100% and unplugged it.
When I woke up now it was off. So I turned it on. It went to the LG screen, then Rogers, then went black. Tried it again, same thing.
So I plugged it into the wall and the silver battery icon came up flashing. 5 minutes later now it has 1 red bar.
Why would it die over night? Nothing was running.

It might be because of a widget,not stock.

Yeah.....u definitely had something running in the background.

Make a list of all apps you have installed.

Same happened to me about 4 times.
Its usually a sync process that drains the phone. I guess Exchange server sync.

well I recently installed Go Launcher. I always go application manager and stop all when I am not using the phone though.
Other than this the battery has been better on gingerbread.

ok there are a few apps that keep starting up even though I stop all applications.
- messaging
- rom manager
- youtube
- winamp
- google +
how can I stop them from constantly opening?
youtube and winamp are both widgets on my screens. but on stock froyo if I "stop all" they wouldn't suck up power or anything.
I never use google + so I don't know why it's there.
rom manager don't use anymore since I am not rooted.

If you dont hav titanium backup pro then get it its so worth the couple bucks u can freeze apps so they cant run or u can totally for the other apps u use not much u can do about them running in the background. What kills my batt the most is auto sync and auto baackground data i always turn them off when im not using them

titanium backup requires root. I just upgraded to gingerbread 2.3 so I don't want to play with root right now.
I need help though because only since I upgraded these apps keep coming up.
I am KILLING apps with application manager. These pop up like minutes later.

- google plus
- winamp
- gmail
- messaging
why are these popping up constantly? I never had this with froyo 2.2.2

the only way to do any thing about it is to root and task killers dont help any these things are accully worse cuz the os just opens the programs again and that uses cpu cycles

I know I read task killlers are not worth it.
But as I said, this did NOT happen with Froyo 2.2.2.
I don't even use google +, why would it ever open?
I didn't open my email, SYNC IS OFF. Yet it's there.
Messaging is open, not texting anyone. In froyo I always killed messaging when I was done. It never came back.
ROM manager has no reason to be open since I am not rooted.

apps like Rogers navigation - NEVER use just randomly pop up in the application manager.
Someone must have an answer for this.
My phone is NOT rooted. Stock gingerbread 2.3.

I too had noticed that the phone would constantly restart random apps that weren't being used, despite seemingly nothing happening. It pissed me off to no end, but the reason why it happens is because the programmers write in queues for the programs to start, such as 'screen on,' 'screen off,' and my personal favorites, 'wifi state change' and 'connectivity change.' There's an app called autostarts on the market (it costs about a dollar i think) that will let you disable all of these, so now I have no random apps starting and my battery life is much better There are free ones on the market you can try as well just to see, but they didn't give me nearly the access to all the queues that autostarts does. It's a damn good app. Also, if you want to freeze apps and you don't want to fork out for the paid version of Titanium Backup, AntTek App Manager can freeze all the apps you want for free good luck improving your battery life, I just bought a 3500 mAh battery on amazon to improve mine lol and now the phone is a beast.

True, while it is in the ram it does not use CPU cycles. But when it loads them, it does. I've also noticed the phone slow down noticeably and even crash when there's tons of apps left in the memory. For some reason it just doesn't handle cleaning up the unused ones very well. But there are some apps that simply don't need to be loaded every time common events occur on the phone, such as changing connectivity from wifi to the cellular network. Consider this. You leave those (useless) background programs to load when the phone changes connectivity. Then you start your browser, which uses a considerable amount of ram. To make room for the browser, the operating system SHUTS THESE BACKGROUND PROGRAMS DOWN. Stay with me here. Later on, when your phone inevitably changes connectivity again, guess what those little background programs do? They start up again. And that consumes CPU cycles and battery. And they're used for nothing, which means all they amounted to is wasted CPU cycles and battery. In my opinion, it is sloppy programming by the app developers to require their apps to start every time an event like that happens. It consumes resources that are precious on a mobile system such as a cell phone. But it is very useful to leave commonly used apps such as your messaging service or browser in the memory. In fact, the messaging app was the only app I left to start on most of the events on the phone for that exact reason. It's just things like ROM manager and Titanium Backup starting themselves up just to hang out that is a waste.

I got the LG Updater tool from the LG website. As far as I know the update was for Rogers Customers. Updated from Froyo -> Gingerbread. But there are problems with the GB Baseband with ghost calls. The update here was released Feb 1, 2012. I'm just hoping they don;t say "We gave you the Gingerbread update so no Icecream Sandwich until 2013"
