Media Streaming

I'm just wondering if there is a way I can stream media (music mainly) to my phone over WiFi, similar to iTunes sharing, or Windows Media Extender kind of setup, so while I'm in the garden I can have a little music.
While I adore Spotify, I don't really rely on it enough to pay £120 a year for the service. And my own collection is nearing 80GB, so no hope of fitting it on an mSD card.
If anyone knows anything about a program which does that, well that would be swell if you could let me know.

I've found a sevice called Android Storage http://www.androidstorage.com, that allows you to upload files, then stream them to your Hero. Their apps can be found on the market.

It's not available yet, but a team of developers is working on creating an app that will add DLNA media streaming support to the Android platform. http://htcsource.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=689&Itemid=56
once released, the software should allow you to stream files to and from your Android phone to other DLNA capable devices (PS3, TV's Computers, digital picture frames).

Just the ticket. I'll be watching that closely, being able to stream stuff to my PS3 is it's best feature.

If you're talking about streaming media from your computer/laptop over Wi-Fi to your phone, then give AndroMote Remote Control a try.
I have the Pro License and it works great for me. (I do the same with my PS3, stream videos and music over the network)

Suggest all in one Audio Video Player

New guy to the Android world. Looking for an 'all in one' app that will play my audio and video collection on my PC. IE, one app to play both audio and video. I've seen variations of VLC but noticed mixed reviews. All suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Personaly y love real player bet. it just makes some videos to play smoothe when other players dont even open the videos. It is all in one, the only bad thing is that (i thin) there is no external sd support)

I really like Orb Live. I have it installed on my server at home that is on 24/7. There is a paid app in the app store for it but before you get too excied it doesnt seem to be working well at all with my G Tab. I do still love it though for my Evo and any other computer I can access it from. It streams all of my music (it attaches itself to my iTunes library and playlists) and my movies and photos...plus it gives me access to the files on the computer too. Also one cool feature is it streams my TV tuner I have on my server. Its only basic cable but its nice still since I travel a whole bunch for work (I am on my way to Paris right now) I can watch all of my local channels remotely.

Skifa media streaming solution

Hey fellow xoom users, i found this app that finally solves the problem of media streaming from windows to android devices. All u have to do is download the app https://market.android.com/details?id=com.skifta.android.app&feature=search_result
and create an account and download the desktop client, and fiddle with your windows media player settings and it works beautifully for streaming movies, pictures, and music. It works on local wifi and over public networks when u sign up. It works with any DLNA device too, and an xbox 360 and ps3 for streaming. It is the only app that works for this. If u have an alternate media player for unsupported formats like avi it even plays those files through that app while streaming. and from my use, it streams very well over any half decent wifi, but still requires wifi. i tried it on my EVO 4g and even oven 4g it would not stream, so thats the only downside. ENJOY!!!

down side is that unless you tagged your movies for streaming during conversion you can only download from your NAS. Can't beat cifs manager for no holds barred streaming

Streaming video app from NAS drive

Well I did Google search my next question and got a bunch of crap. I'm trying to find an alternative video player besides the default player that streams from my home network like "connected media " in the default video app. I'm NOT looking for something that needs me to fire something up on my PC and "sync ". I already have an Iomega NAS drive that streams to my ps3 and thunderbolt even when my Mac is off. It has a 1 TB drive on it. I'm simply looking for a better video player that will also scan for connected wifi media drives. Scouring the market I can't seem to find any that do that in the description. Downloaded a few and they didn't. Some will sync wit iTunes but that's not what I'm looking for. Thx in advance for any ideas ...

What kind of shares does your NAS use to share its data? Saamba? Other? Find this out and then we can help you more.
I suspect you'll need something (an app on you're phone) to connect to these shares and then sync the media to your phone, after which you can play. The process of streaming requires intelligent software on both ends. I use DLNA (my NAS supports this) and this works beautifully for me and my streaming needs. This even allows me to stream from my phone to my tv.

I use dlna. My server uses twonky software. The stock video player on my thunderbolt streams through dlna.. but it sux. Looking 4 a better Dlna streaming alternative ... Thx

OK looked at that. That will stream. I already got something that will stream. My question is on the receiving end. I'm simply looking for an alternative video app for android that supports dnla streaming. Unless u think my streaming issues are on the pushing end?

This might be what you want. FFMPEG streaming server on android. I could compile it for you later this week sometime if you feel it's what you want and will use it. I compiled the ffmpeg libraries already just to see if i could do it on the cross compiler, but I didnt compile the actual binary application. It's just a command line app, but you can set it to run in the background and forget it. Adding that with the libraries, you should be able to stream audio and video (including x264 and such) on your phone to whatever output device you wish to watch it on. For those that don't know what FFMPEG is, it's one of the most stable media libraries/app on linux and players such as rockplayer on android use it.

There are a ton of apps for this, I recently set up a home theater with DLNA support. I downloaded a DMS for the PC like XMBC or Serviio or Twonky. Next, get something like iMediaShare, or ArkMC is beast at this, on your phone. I have both installed. When you connect to your wifi at home they can pick everything up. They both pick up my windows shares, XMBC shares, Serviio, and Nero shares. I had them all set up at once because I was testing, but I think I'm going to pick XMBC.

ArkMc works exactly as I want. Without any dropped videos. Still. Some I can't fast forward through but I can when viewing with vlc on my Mac. I wish I knew how to edit a video to force it to be fast forwardable... (I know that ain't a word. Lol) but I'm gonna have to try the paid version of arkmc to see what it unlocks. Thx

You can try to use 3rd party players available at ArkMC, probaly this lets you to fast worward your video.

Stream video from PC to Xoom

I've been seeing alot of people wanting to stream video from thier Home PC or HTPC to thier Xoom. I've also seen some really hard ways to go about it, srsly.
Here's an easy way that does not require you to install anything on your PC.
1. Share out your video folder on your PC, allow full access to everyone.
2. On Xoom, connect to your WiFi then goto Market, search "bs player" and download and install it, and the ARM7 addon next to it.
3. Open BS player, in top right menu, select LAN Mode.
4. Add your host(IP) and share: 192.168.0.2/downloads (this may not work for, is only example), add your username and password for the PC (your Login). You may need to add // infront of your IP address in some cases, not sure why.
Done.
BS player also plays most files inc .avi. Streams 720p quite fluently.
Also there is a way to do this over the net, but your net would probably die and it takes longer to explain and i'm at work, and i'm lazy ^_^.

You could do the same thing from your file explorer and have any player play the files from your computer. I switch to LAN in Honeycomb HD File Explorer and put my home IP in and now I can watch any of the files on my Xoom.

I installed tversity server on the pc and shared the video folder
I installed bubbleUpnp on the xoom..
open bubbleUPNP, browse to the folder, click the video and watch it on MX Video Player (or others)
Works beautifully

There are a few ways to do it.
This appears to be one of the easiest ways, along with sharing and using it through HD Explorer, which i do more than the way i posted.
But having to install software on your PC just to stream videos, in my oopinion, is unacceptable.
My PC has way more than enough power to do it as it was built for gaming, but I'd prefer not to add software that i don't need to.
But everyone has their way of doing it, this was just for those who aren't overly computer savvy and wanted to know how.

Qloud Free does a really good job of streaming video as well. Adjustable bit rate before you start each video even allows you to take in to account how powerful the CPU on the PC you are streaming from might be.

I followed your instructions, but nothing will play. Every file on my WHS server that I click on just crashes with "Unexpected error occured". I tried MP4, AVI (Xvix and Divx), and WMV files. I can see all my files under the folder I shared, none of them will play though.

I use Splashtop. What it basically does is lets you control your PC from your Xoom. Not sure if thats what you need. On the same network its pretty smooth.
If you are just looking to play it directly on your Xoom without it playing on ur PC then there are several softwares/apps available that let you view your PC files on your tablet.
What I would do is enable web sharing on my PC and then access the URL from my tablet's browser.

don't forget gmote 2.0. Its been streaming brilliantly for me

Grabbing Plex is also a good way, though it isn't free. If you have a wide array of video formats (I have a large mix of SD, 720p, and 1080p content), something that can transcode is pretty much the only option, and Plex is much cheaper than the paid version of TVersity.
The Plex Media Server app catalogs videos with metadata like XBMC does on the PC, but requires their paid app from the market to access it. It handles real-time transcoding for videos that would otherwise be unplayable on the Xoom (ie 1080p high profile).

I agree with splashtop. I though about streaming other ways but didnt want to leave my video folder open to the entire network. Splashtop works perfectly.
I also use splashtop to get the video onto my xoom and then plug it into the tv with hdmi rather than carrying my laptop around or using a media streamer.

I personally like Remote Potato on windows 7. There is an app in the market called Remote Media Center that works real nice.
You will need Windows Media Center for this to work. I like it because I can also stream Live TV and the Guide.
