I have an unlocked FRF91 and I am trying to get root on either this or an older build. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Look for stickies and rooting threads in Development section. Not hard to find.

I know the update was a security fix but am looking for a method to root while remaining as completely stock as humanly possible. I've never rooted before and am still completely stock now.
Best case scenario would be to gain root while leaving everything stock, boot loader, recovery, etc.. maybe even try one of them nice roms for the first time (i hear cyrogen is the best and yes I probably misspelled that)
Thanks

Same question
There's a couple of tutorials about this in another thread.
If I were you i'd follow one of them and also install a custom recovery. Then play around all you like with rooted roms, stock, custom or otherwise. Once you have a custom recovery you can flash anything. The only down side is that you won't be able to install any OTA roms. But to be honest they appear on XDA in a format you can use on custom recovery way way before you ever receive an OTA notification anyway.
Then if you're sure you only want a stock but rooted rom, then install that and then finally flash the stock recovery back.
However if you're sure you don't want a custom recovery and only want root, you can follow the first half of the same tutorials.
I myself have an unlocked bootloader, but if I didnt, I would root, install a custom recovery and never look back. If anything ever happened to my device i'd just flash the stock recovery and stock firmware and send it back.
Ok, thanks!
That's good information but I'm unsure if I want to unlock at the moment. Thanks but I'll wait a little longer to see if a solution comes out that this my needs.

No, thats the point. You dont need to unlock to root OR put a custom recovery anymore. See here for example:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=710842
So you can root, put on a custom recovery, try different roms and then go back to stock, rooted or not, without unlocking the bootloader at all.
I see what your getting at, that's what I was looking for but wasn't sure it was working for FRF91 the last few posts in that thread indicated an unlocked boot loader last time I looked.
I thought the update was to fix the security hole that allowed that

I have read a lot of comments on the guide of how root the nexus without unlocking the bootloader and searched in other places but couldn't find an answer to my question...
I've got at&t version nexus unrooted and I updated it to FRF91 OTA.
can I use this guide to root it without unlocking the bootloader?
If I can, how do I do it? some people wrote that I need to use Passimg.zip
but I think It's for T-mo version only because at&t's version doesn't have the erf79 (I hope I wrote it right).
anyway I'm really confused. can someone please explain?
thanks

they should work in the same way as it did for FRF83 or FRF85B.. you could always try without harm

EPE76 to frf85B
Hi,
I am back from frf91 ota to EPE76 by applaing passimg.zip. My question is how can I move to frf85B ? I've tried to download universal frf85B, change name to update.zip and go to recovery, but I only see exclemation mark. Please advise. Thank you.
Been all over the forums and in order to flash Amans recovery, Modaco requires a rooted device and superboot. Well, we know superboot isn't available for FRF91 yet and to flash requires root.
How the heck does anybody flash a recovery image without root?
The goal here is to get root and and this point don't really care if the bootloader is locked or unlocked. Just need root access to run certain apps.
Was planning to boot into recovery, then run the passion update for root access, but this is a catch 22.
If you do a search... yadda yadda....
You must downgrade to frf83/5? i forget the exact number. There's at least 3 different posts on general...
fark it, start here, and then SEARCH.

I was in the same boat as you. I flashed the RA Recovery and although it said it was flashed successfully, when I booted into recovery, i saw the stock recovery. Was on FRF91. So took a gamble and flashed the latest superboot from modoco. Cant remember if it was FRF83 or FRF85B and then reflashed RA recovery. It worked
Once in RA recovery I wiped and flashed a cooked ROM.
Already tried EPE76 and was screwed lol. Ran the universal update back to FRF91. Looks like I'm going to have to downgrade again unless there's another solution. Would like to know how to flash a recovery rom without root.

Well I was on FRF83 then recieved the FRF91 OTA from Google.
As there was no FRF91 superboot on Modaco i flashed the FRF83 version.
I also kept the universal update in my SD card just in case but it went smooth for me.
This bites. There's no clear cut guide how to root. Just bits and pieces of information and a complex labyrinth of instructions. Most of the info is outdated and requires a downgrade, then upgrade, then recovery. The recovery requires root and the whole goal is root lmao. It's no wonder there are almost daily posts of guys trying to root and/or unlock bootloaders but nobody knows how to explain the procedure. The stickies have dead links, and everyone says "hit the search button" and not one person has created a sticky for rooting instructions on the FRF91. I actually downgraded to EPE76 and got stuck due to the inability to upgrade to anything except back to FRF91 AT&T stock.
It would be nice is someone actually took a few minutes to explain a working procedure how to downgrade, upgrade, and use recovery to gain root. Really don't care about the bootloader. Somebody will get rich with paypal donations and I'll be the first to donate.

just read the sticky for rooting without unlocking bootloader in the android dev section
its up to date. if you unlocked your bootloader, the outdated root guides are fine to use even now. you need to ensure you flash a custom rom so the recovery isnt replaced on reboot
Anyone care to point me in the correct direction?
If you have a locked bootloader and want to keep it. This is the latest and pretty easy rooting method.

Ive tested it on my US ATT N1.
All thanks to Revolutionary I have my One s-off. Now i want to install a custom Recovery and get root access. I would like to know the steps.
I have been trying to find out the procedures but looks like a lot of reading has confused me.

At this time there is no Root available for the NC2 update. We have no idea when, or if, it will even be available. If a root method is discovered then it will be big news, so I'm sure you will hear of it in these forums.
Also, there is no downgrade option at this point.
