For US Based Co-Pilot works really well and is not too expensive $35. They were very slow to update to Froyo but the update runs well for me on stock FRF91. The Maps seem to be complete for the areas I've been in and used it (IL, IN, PA, VA, NC). The interface itself is smooth and fairly well laid out.
I have Sygic Mobile Maps as well but can't really recommend it. The interface itself is *painfully* slow. We are talking hit "next" in the menu and I have to wait 4-5 seconds for the next pane of static options to come up. It's so painful to use that I consider that a $54 mistake (not in the market and non refundable) and uninstalled it.
I don't think Navigon is available for the US, but that's an option outside of the US as well.

I bought Copilot as well. It works OK, not as good as TomTom that I had on my WM Touch HD. While I was waiting for the new Copilot version I found the IGO version for the Nexus one. Search for Motonav_JM-PPCW_v2 on google and you might find it.

Thanks guys, I didnt know copilot was updated. Good to know.

is there any free offline navigation for n1?

Try NavDroyd, free.

rmaps. It lets you use your own offline maps.

I just use the included navigation app with my N1

Google nav works better then my car nav except for crappy voice. But I need offline

I use Motonav (igo for hd screens) and it's great.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App

Also, if "offline" doesn't mean "completely offline", but rather "can stand 50kB of data transferred per navigation, but no more than that" - then you can try Waze.

Ah, didn't notice you said offline. Can't help you there, because I always use maps that just download from google maps, since I'm always using the cell network.

[App] - Layar

Has anyone used an application alled "Layar"? BRILLIANT! What it does is find the nearest search result near you and display how far you are away from it.
For example, search Macdonalds and it will search for the nearest Macdonalds and show you on a map when you point the phone camera in that direction! Brilliant if you feel lost or just want to find somewhere!!! Give it ago from the apps market.
This app has been around ages, I never found a use for it though.
There is also plenty of other apps that do just that as well

I only just got a HTC Hero G2! So still gettin used to the apps e.t.c. I think if your somewhere you don't know then this app could come in really handy.
Seems to keep crashing on BeHero 1.3.2. you load a layar then it goes to the screen where you can see through the camera and then jumps back to the layar selection screen after about 5 seconds - anyone else got that problem?

+1 on BeHero for me aswell, tested on another ROM and all was good.
using the neo rom 2.0 and it seems to crash on me as well...just me or ???
lol @ u all for having modified roms.
Layar doesn't work on the Legend (see here), so I suspect if you're using a ROM based on the Legend ROM, you'll have the same issue.
Regards,
Dave
Most just cool but not useful until I recently found a layer for UK Postboxs - exact locations and when last pickup is.
can anyone confirm if this works anywhere internationally and not just uk?

Nav Launcher updates kill Navigation -not sure if this is a repost / common knowledge

I'm not sure if this is already common knowledge or not but I figured I noticed that before I do an update to Nav Launcher, Navigation works perfectly. After I update, the GPS signal will drop.
If this is a repost / common knowledge I apologize and please disregard but I figured I would share for those who were not aware of this.
Ok I'm curious now - is it like this for anyone else? Does everyone already know about this? Thanks lol
Google Nav has always been dropping signal since the very beginning. Does not matter the ROM or version of Nav Launcher, at least that's my experience.
ROM I've Tried:
SenseHero
SenseTatoo
mssmison eclair-Various releases
Myn donut -Release 3 and 4
Plemen donut - Various releases

Hmmmm...See I'm running Myn release 4 WITHOUT updating Nav Launcher and it's been working without a hitch... for trips longer than 20 minutes.

Must be my phone.
Yeah, sometime it last for a while, most of the time it just keep on dropping.
I have assisted gps enable..could it be it?
What radio version are you using?
i honestly have never had a problem with google navigation
That app has never worked well for me. OK ONE time it kept a connection all the way to work, but it's never worked for more than 30 seconds ever since.
Every other time I've tried, it acts like it's going to work then starts "Searching for GPS". I can enable the GPS within regular Google maps and it stays connected, and I can use the nav app called "Copilot" and once it connects it stays connected.
Hmmm well I'm not sure what causes other problems if GPS isn't working right to begin with, but if you are having trouble with Nav, try rolling back to original version included when installing Google Maps... don't update Nav Launcher. It works perfect for me now.
Google Maps Nav now works in Canada
I'm not sure if this is relevant, but google maps nav on android now works in more countries than just US/UK. For canadians, at least, this is a huge bonus.
search 'google maps navigation countries'
requirements: android 1.6+
Thought i'd pass that on to the populace. Just fired up the HTC touch and tried the google nav (not the launcher) and it popped up successfully for me (the first time I've tried it in weeks).

Can't get current location on bing maps

I have HD2 with WP7 installed and activated. Location option is on. So I start bing maps to see my location and nothing. I was thinking it was running slow and I left it like that 5 minutes. Nothing changed. The thing is foursquare sometimes work and I can't explain why.
Does anyone share this problem or is it just me?
Same Here..
Do have data on? To get a fast fix you need either mobile data or WiFi. Otherwise the GPS may need up to 30 min. to get a fix. Also try if other GPS soft like Navigon is getting a fix. For me it takes something like 20 sec.
I changed to the Google map. Better info too. I cant post the link, but just search for Google map for wp7 xap.
Thanks man. I've been waiting for a reply for a week. Reinstalling WP7 to see if it's working. I got bored of android..
Edit: I installed WP7, activated it, first time bing maps got my location. After a reset ... nothing. I tried google maps but the same... can't get a location.

I read somewhere that bing maps only makes problems in non US or non UK countries. I see you are from UK so I don't understand why you had problems.
After two days of periodic testing I can say that the GPS on this phone has personality. It's either not sensing anything or it's getting a signal in 2 seconds.
If you don't mind using google maps instead of bing, try "TAmaps".
Got a crazy maximum 5s GPS fix (and don't forget to activate 3G, must increase location data fix)
No bing maps are rubbish. Google Maps gives better coverage in many parts of the world than Bing Maps.
(Sakem: I could not remeber the name), but thats it. TA Maps is the one to get. You can purchase it via marketplace, or down load the free version via web.

[Q] Most Stable ROM for G1, that can run oogle Navigation?

Hi, all!
I have a Dream/ G1 with Android 2.2.1 (Froyo). This was the latest stable ROM before Cyanogenmod stopped supporting this device (update-cm-6.1.0-DS-signed.zip).
I've recently started to find that Google Navigation 'freezes', whilst following a route. It seems that the voice commands/ directions continue to work, but the map freezes. I find the app really useful and need to get another 10 months out of my G1 before I can get a replacement.
Can anyone recommend a stable ROM that can run 'Navigation'? I don't care about most of the features, as long as it makes calls, sends (and receives) texts, pulls down my Gmail and runs Navigation...... I guess the problem could actually be with 'the 'Navigation' app, so maybe I need to try to identify when this problem started and then regress to an old version and not allow updates...hmmm (thinking aloud).
I've moved as many apps as I can to the SDCard, in order to free-up space.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Chris.
I think CM6 is the only ROM that has the navigation app...Of course CM7 does too, but it's unsupported for your device. And a lot of the unofficial Gingerbread ROMs that also have the navigation app are very unstable.
Thanks, xda<3. Looks like I may have to dig the TomTom out, again.
Chris.
Try biffmod. It's like cm6 but stripped down and optimized specifically for the g1.

if you want stable try a ezterry rom, im currently runniing ezgingerbread(link on my signature)and i havent had one single force close.
Thanks maximo360, I'll have a look at that link now. Biffmod looks interesting, but at the moment, the /swap partition thing looks a bit daunting. I've created a seperate post about the Biffmod installation. As I say, I'll have a look at your link.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
cheers,
Chris.
I had a look at the link. Interestingly it talks about Google Maps being very resource intensive and to use 4.7. This could be the root of my Google Navigation problem.
Before I test another ROM, is it possible to download the 4.7 version of Maps and just use this instead of the currently installed one, i.e., downgrade? I guess if it's possible, I'll just not allow automatic updating of Maps.
### Just notice the reference to Brut maps, based on 4.6. I'll see if this is on Market.
Thanks,
Chris.

yes u can downgrade i think that is discussed in the thread or just post a reply asking for the most stable navigation app that they used.
Brut Maps downloaded and seems to work. Will need to do a longish journey to prove it properly. Suspect it will be fine, as I used to run this before Google maps, without any issues.
Cheers,
Chris.
Brut Maps is far more stable on my G1 than the native Navigation app; I've been using it for a couple years now.
I guess the downside of Brut is that as a static APK, it may not get map updates. If this is the case, I can live with it.
Cheers,
Chris.
Froyo by Lazslo with Igo-myway working fine for me hier in EU . Is not necessary to have data plan or messing with google maps.
If you are alright with upgrading to Gingerbread, use COS-DS by Roalex. It's a great ROM. Stable, fast, and just great
I looked at installing EzGingerbrea, but due to complications upgrading Radio and Spl, I think I may have to stick with the latest (quite old) Froyo ROM. Thanks for the suggestion. I just don't want to install the Android Dev (SDK, I think) software on my Linux box.
Cheers,
Chris

Well ... with your radio/spl combo it should be possible to install EzGingerbread on your phone. Not that I would suggest to do so, because you will have about 14MB less RAM, which is noticable on our phones, but principally it should run .
What sort of complications? And you shouldn't have to install anything onto your computer... unless of course, those are the complications you were talking about :/ (Sidenote, linux = awesome, what distro are you using? I love ubuntu myself...)
And no problem for the suggestion, let me know if you decide to upgrade. Gingerbread, while probably SLIGHTLY slower than Froyo, it brings so much wonderfulness with it :] haha

Slightly off-topic, but I generally prefer Debian based distros, but in the last 12 years of having a Windows free house, I've tried most of them, and particularly like Arch linux. Ubuntu seems to be heading in a direction I don't like, but if I ever use a Ubuntu-type distro, it's always Xubuntu, as it's lighter but still has a feature rich desktop.
Cheers,
Chris.

I'm now using Brut Maps (which is what I was using here in the UK, before Navigation was properly available). Things seem much more stable, now.

Anybody using their note as a GPS?

anyone using the note as a GPS?
Any recommendation for GPS software?
the in built navigation does not seem to work as a GPS.
i have no problems using it for navigation as a sat nav if you mean that?
use it as sat nav everyday at work wih the built in app

i can't get the nav to direct me.. it just work like a map and not like a GPS..
for instance, the GPS will get me some advise like please left and turn left in 200meter etc..
the built in nav does not seem to have this function. correct me if i am wrong.
You're using Google Maps.
For navigation, you must use Google Nav
you need to use the navigation app not maps
In Maps tap the menu button then select directions
Once you have entered your destination tap the symbol at the bottom left of the screen then the blue arrow at the top right.

I've bought NDrive but there are quite a few other GPS turn-by-turn navigation apps available. The one advantage of these they store the maps locally so no need to run up the data bill. Although Google maps does do pre-caching of map areas if you enable it in the labs.
GPS is pretty good and much better then S2... it`s logged in very quick. i used different GPS-Software my favorite for navigation is Sygic.
Sygic and Navigon both have pretty good reputations, I've used Sygic before and was happy.
GPS performance is excellent with the GLONASS support.

Blutehooth via Parrot
Navigation:
connect bluethooth
start Musik
start navigation
adjust spoken navigation volume
an everything is fine in my opinion it works better then iPhone and/or HTC

Hi, I tried install Sygic on my note but it doesn't work! It keep crashing!
Maybe you did not download a MAP via Sygic downloader ?
You need a map first otherwise the software won't work (well)
Sygic rules. (coming from TomTom, it's just as good)

i have downloaded the map through Sygic Down. Both Singapore and Malaysia maps..
do i need to load them first?
I'm succesfully usually Sygic: it's fantastic with the HD screen of the Note.
If it keeps crashing during start up, this can be the same problem that there is with the Galaxy S2 and other phone. Try to enable the wifi connection and then start the sw. Sometime it works. Anyway in the Sygic forum there are beta version of the sw that are fixing the various problem. Have a look at it because the beta are not relase to the market until they become stable version.
