Not given any option - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I plug my phone into a computer I don't get the option to choose, Charge, Disk Drive, Sync or Internet Sharing. It only says USB Debugging enabled.
I can access everything through adb shell and such, but I'd like to be able to move stuff around easily on my sdcard.
Anyone know what might have caused this? I can't think of any changes I've made that would have caused this.....
Thanks in advance.
noticed in logcat getting the following
I/System.out(22535): resolveUri failed on bad bitmap uri:
and
D/UsbConnectedReceiver (771): OOBE not finished, block 6000 secs
happens every 15 seconds more or less when I'm plugged in.

sounds like windows 7. lol
Try uninstalling the drivers off the computer, uninstall HTC sync, reboot computer, install HTC sync and plug your phone in AND LET IT INSTALL THE DRIVERS FOR YOUR PHONE!!!
then it should work.

This happens on any computer I plug it in, that had worked previously. It started on Windows XP machine, and also happens on 2 Windows 7 Machines.
I can live without, just a little bit of a hassle.

Help! My computer won't recognize my phone

I'm running windows 7 x64, and Cyanogen's 3.9.7 and suddenly my computer stopped recognizing my phone, it didn't replace the driver with something else, when I plug my phone in it doesn't even communicate with the computer. There is no drop down to mount, and the computer doesn't even see it as being a connected device, I've tried USBDeview and it doesn't show up as being connected at all. I have no idea what to do. Help would be great.

Nope, not at all.
Tried it with more then one usb cable? One of my cables went bad not too long ago... Also could try different usb port. If all else fails.. try it on the different computer just to rule out hardware issues. If it does not register on different PC then you may need to exchange you device...
Good luck

ADB device offline

I've been using ADB the last couple of days to install apps on my Captivate and all of the sudden it stopped working today.
When I type 'adb devices' the phone comes up right away, but it shows offline.
I have tried reinstalling the drivers and Android SDK, but no luck. I've searched around and found some others with this issue, but haven't really found a fix that works for me.
Any idea why ADB would just stop working like that? I even performed a factory reset of the phone and put everything back to defaults.
Ok I almost pulled my hair out, but I found the problem.
For some reason, ADB does not work with the Samsung USB cable that came with the Captivate.
I switched to another USB cable and it works just fine.
Man, I really thought I was going crazy.

What the hell is that about!? I wish all these companies would stop trying to break from standards by proprietizing common cables.
I can't get the drivers to work. Where did you get yours?

Yeah I buy that, I couldn't even get the thing to try and connect at all with out switching usb connections on my computer.
stock cable works. I just rooted and ran into that problem. In order to get around it if you cant get a diff cable, make sure that b4 you connect your phone to your pc you turn off your internet so it doesnt auto dl the drivers. b4 u connect, dl the drivers for your phone from the root thread. Plug your phone into ur comp with the internet off and close any pop ups. Go to device manager look for the notification labled usb or captivateand right click and select update. Select search from file on disk or select file (something like that, i forget) and scroll and select the folder where you extracted the usb drivers. Make sure the checkbox that says search subfolders is checked and click next to install. two more drivers will pop up in device manager after u install the first one. Repeat the same procedure for both of them and then you should be able to use adb just fine to root.
Just wanted to further confirm that using a different microusb cable works! I keep reinstalling the drivers but it kept showing the device was offline. Then I tried my old Nokia N85 cable and it worked like charm! So weird how usb cables aren't made equally, unless Samsung designed the cable to prevent using adb?
I had this issue for a little while, but I installed the Samsung Kies software (which contains drivers) and uninstalled the ADB drivers I had originally downloaded. It's worked like a charm since then.
Go to SamsungApps.com and then use the canada site, as the software isn't really available in the US yet.
I have had no problems using the stock cable on my Laptop and work PC, both are Win 7 32bit. The same cannot be said for my my main home PC which is Win 7 64bit. Neither the stock cable nor an after market cable worked with ADB.
For the 32bit OSes I installed the Kies software and the usb device gets installed correctly. for the 64bit OS, I installed the Kies software but could get the phone to connect correctly. I then tried to install the 64bit drivers that are floating around the web. The 64 bit drivers worked enough to get the phone connected to the PC but when I tried to query "adb devices" the phone would always appear as offline. I've tried several things: install/uninstall drivers and software on the PC, restart the PC and Phone, change cables. Nothing seems to help on Win 7 64bit.
It seems to me that there might be a bug in the 64bit driver, though I have no proof of a bug.
I am going to keep playing with the 64bit OS until i figure it out or get so annoyed a that I just give up.
I'll be using my Win 7 32 bit laptop until I get the 64bit PC to work.

i've been able to install .apk's with my win7 64-bit ADB :O
all i did was install Samsung Kies.
i don't think i've ever had a problem...?
EDIT: i'm using the cable that came with it and no problems yet.
I'm running win 7 x64 and Kies did the trick for me. I haven't had a single issue connecting my phone since I did that.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Justa dding to the anecdotes.
I was having problems with the included cable using the front USB. It would show as Device Offline, also the charging wasn't very strong.
I switched to the onboard USB at the back of the case, and adb worked fine with the included cable.
Looks like I'll be picking up a couple extra USB cables so I won't have to continuously do the desk dive everytime I need to use it somewhere else.
1. I installed the kies drivers first and it would say offline when i checked the device through the cmd prompt.
2. I then installed the adb drivers and it then said the device was online.
3. i then rooted the phone and went on my way. i then tried it a second time and it said device offline.
4. nothing changed during this time except that i turned off debug mode, changed it to mass storage and plugged it back into the usb to transfer some files.
5. on returning to debug mode it no longer tells me the device is online. i have tried different USB ports as well.
6. i deleted the drivers, and reinstalled and it still says offline.
very frustrating.
wow. i forgot to try plugging it into another USB port. that worked. sorry about previous post.
I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on my laptop,
I installed the samsung 64bit drivers, it was an installer i found on the web, not the kies installer packaged driver one.
i changed my setting on my captivate to Mass Storage.
I mounted usb and everything works, by that I mean i was able to ADB like no tomorrow without any issues.
Then I made the mistake of installing Samsung Kies and that messed up my previous drivers and I wasnt able to ADB to my phone. I had to uninstall Samsung Kies and my phone still wasnt being found I still couldnt ADB.
my solution to fixing was restarted my phone and computer, without my phone connected to USB i re-installed the Samsung 64bit Driver Package, then hooked up my phone made sure Mass Storage was selected and Mounted USB and bam was able to ADB again.
hope this helps! also i have been doing videos helping people with issues with samsung's captivate on youtube, youtube.com/johnnyzappone if anyone wants to check em out, if anyone has any suggestions please let me know and id be happy to release a video!
I resolved my issues, I plugged the stock cable into one of the rear usb ports and the device is now available on my main PC Win 7 64 bit.

Confirmed this made my device stop appearing as offline with adb.
How it is even possible that the cable prevents (only) adb access on the PC, I have no idea.
I have windows 7 and mac osx and I can use adb with both using the stock USB.
i have debugging active.
lol @ the samsung cable.
i've 2 indentic cables here, one doesn't work. plugged in the other one and this one works...
maby its just a strange issue on windows, next time try to pull out the cable and put in back in then connect your device again this should work.... :s
because earlier the cable just worked fine and now it doesn't.. so good luck xD

[Q] Can't connect my Captivate through USB anymore

Hi everyone,
I'm having issues connecting my Samsung Captivate to my computer. For about a week, it worked fine, I was able to transfer files to my phone but recently I noticed that the "USB connected" notification is not showing on the phone when plugged in to the computer.
Now, when I plug in my phone to the computer it just charges but doesn't comunicate with my computer. A friend of mine bought the same phone right after I did and he gets the "USB connected" connected when he plugs in his.
I tried using his USB cable but again, the phone is not recognized by Windows nor the phone detects it is connected to the computer. I've tried installing several USB drivers that I've come across on several forums, but nothing. I even downloaded and updated Kies to the latest version, but still nothing.
My phone is unlocked and NOT rooted, and I'm using Windows 7 x64. I've set the USB Settings to Mass Storage, even to Ask on Connection, but it doesn't ask anything when I connect the phone to a USB on my computer.
Sometimes Windows knows there is a device connected but says it couldn't recognize it.
I already did a factory reset, but the issue was not solved. I've tried connecting it to other computers, but still hasn't been able to connect my phone correctly.
What could it be?
Thanks!
Hmm. You have Mass Storage selected and up-to-date USB drivers. Try selecting USB-Debugging and Stay Awake in the Development option of your phone. If that doesn't fix it, then I have a few other ideas.
Make sure the usb door is completely open, it should click into place, some users have reported this solves their usb issues.
I did what you told me, but still my phone ain't recognized by Windows nor my phone is aware that it has been conected to a computer
What other ideas do you have in mind?

Have you tried using a different USB outlet on your computer? I had this same issue when I plugged my phone up using the USB outlet on the front of my computer then when I tried the one on the back of my computer it worked just fine.
Are you running a launcher app? I use launcher pro and can't connect until I change back to the default launcher with home switcher and launch it.

First off, think back. If it worked for a week and then suddenly stopped, what changed? Maybe you updated something on Windows or changed something on your phone. There's a reason it just stopped.
You can try using a free program called USBDeview.
It might do the trick for you and help you install the correct drivers. I'm thinking you no longer have them.
1. Download USBDeview (link is above)
2. Plug your phone in and open the program. Find all the HTC drivers-delete them
3. Unplug your phone and plug it back in
4. The correct drivers should install automatically
You can also try updating the drivers manually.
Galaxy S drivers (These are for ADB, but will work fine)
1. Click the Start Menu on your computer and right click "Computer"
2. Choose "Manage" --> it will ask you to continue --> "Device Manager"
3. Plug you phone in and look for it to pop up, probably under Portable Devices
4. Right click --> "Properties" --> "Update Driver" --> "Browse" --> "Let Me Pick" --> and navigate to the location you extracted the drivers to.
This is most likely a driver issue. I doubt your phone is messed up. You'll get it eventually. I also had a hard time getting my Captivate to connect. After uninstalling and reinstalling my drivers (more than once) it finally worked. One last thing, for now. When you uninstall drivers, also make sure you don't have any installed under your program list. As in, Control Panel --> Uninstall a program. Good luck!

I did all that yesterday, but the device ain't listed in the USBDeview nor it shows up in the Device Manager
did you finally fix this problem? because I'm having the same issue here
Same here. It was working fine, I could connect to Kies, transfer music in Media mode and see both sd drives in Mass Storage mode. Then I rooted today and now I get nothing. In anything but Kies mode I get the Windows Bong of Recognition, but still not visible in Explorer. Also, my Home screen stays active instead of switching to the USB animation like it did before. I know this can't be a consequence of rooting the phone, can it?
EDIT: More weirdness, with the phone connected in Mass Storage mode if I look at My Computer in Explorer there are 2 extra drives showing, but they are greyed out and when I click on either of them it asks me to insert a card as the drive is empty. WTF???
UPDATE: I unrooted and managed to get my USB connection back to working. It is still a bit flaky as I sometimes have to disconnect/reconnect several times before it works, but at least it now works although it sometimes loses sync in the middle of transferring a file. Can't imagine why simply rooting the phone would cause the loss of USB connectivity. I am going to reroot and see if it occurs again.
OK, a rerooted the phone and this problem is now back. I have no problem connecting while in debugging mode. I installed OCD (non-Market apps mod) and when I turn off debugging and connect I get the Windows bong and see the USB icon in the Notification bar, but the MTP screen never comes up and I can't see the phone in Explorer (Mass Storage mode) or in WMP (Media mode). Kies can;t see it in that mode, either. I really don't want to have to unroot every time I want to look at the phone contents. Any ideas? PLEASE!
I'm having a similar problem - I installed the Perception ROM and immediately afterwards I can't see the USB connection at all from my PC or my Mac. The USB icon on the phone does not come up either.
I'm trying to get my hands on a different cable - but the weird thing is when I plug the USB into my computer the phone starts charging for like half a second and then stops.
This is really annoying. I tried changing the rom to Cognition 3.02 but that didn't change anything.
There are a few topics on this here on the forum - I would recommend the following:
How are you rooting your phones? Nobody has said exactly how they are doing this. Are you using recommended rooting methods? Or are you using some app found on the market?
Make sure you have USB De-Bugging is turned on.
Make sure you have it listed as ask on connection.
For those who can see the drives in Windows...
Plug in your phone and then pull down your notification bar and click on the USB connected message. It will give you an option there to mount your SDCard(s) to Windows allowing you to transfer files.
Kies is junk - I'd recommend uninstalling it as it seems to cause more issues then it solves.
Use the drivers I have posted in the Q&A section (these are the ones that are linked in Design Gears Odin 1 Click Back to Stock post btw) - but I would try and COMPLETELY removing the pre-existing drivers before installing the new ones.
Make sure the USB Cable is plugged into the back USB port that is directly on your motherboard - this will ensure it's not a computer/hardware related issue.
I know of one user who had to go through his computer and manually remove all remnants of other drivers. I have my phone connected to both a Windows XP 32bit and a Windows 764bit systems and have been lucky to not have any USB issues.
If none of that works - I'd suggest taking it to your nearest AT&T/Rodgers shop and see if they can get the phone to connect (make sure it's back to stock!). If not they should warranty replace the device.

This isn't my first rodeo... But to answer your questions:
I used the rooting method posted in XDA forums - the one-click rooting.
I've used the drivers included in the xda-forum. Not the kies software.
The only thing that changed was the loading of a new custom rom. The cable works (confirmed on my friend's phone). I can't get odin to restore back to stock because I can't get the computer to recognize the phone in either normal or in download mode. I've restored to stock using the jh7 in the stickied q&a thread
I don't think it's a hardware issue either - I think it's software-based. I'm going to try to take it to an at&t store today at lunch to see what they say.
I also have that problem only I noticed it when I cleared the dalvik cache. It messed up the auto rotate so it was always sideways and now I have no connectivity to the PC. Let me know how ATT treats you.

[Q] windows will not recognize touchpad

I am not sure when this started. I have used windows to install cymod several times but i went to download a update and install it and my computer will not recognize the touchpad. it says the device driver was not installed properly
i have tried on two different units.
one has web os only and the other has android
it goes through the steps of looking for the device and then nothing.
i get a tone on the touchpad and then nothing on the computer
I do have the correct setting in the storage settings so i have no idea what to do

It sounds like driver problem to me. Search for HP touchpad driver and download and install the latest version you find, that should do it.. I'm assuming you have the MTP box checked in storage > settings > USB computer connection. Also, reboot both the tablet and the computer after installing the new driver.
Good luck.
I have two different devices one only has web os and the other has android.
on the android I have the MTp checked and have accessed it in the past but i upgraded to windows 8
that being said i had the same issue with windows 7 i just thought a fresh install would fix the issue and it has not
I have downloaded what i thought was teh latest drivers.
I have installed novacom
and rebooted my system.
and I get the same error message Windows does not recognize the device.
i get the connected tone on my computer but I don't get any response on the touchpads

Try using a different USB lead and plugging into different USB sockets on your PC sometimes I find my PC will recognize it with one socket but not another same thing occasionally happens with my USB sticks. Otherwise I would suggest trying a different PC if you still have a problem that would suggest a fault with the USB socket on your touchpad which I have had to have replaced once.
Fingers crossed that isn't your problem.

This will let TP be recognized on the PC
"If you want to transfer files back and forth from the CM9 touchpad you might have difficulty figuring out how exactly to do it.Here's how you pull it off:
First, tap on your app drawer in the top right of the screen (the little checkerboard). Now, select the "settings" icon.
Now tap on storage on the left-hand pane.
Finally, the tricky part - tap on the 3 squares at the VERY top right of your screen. It will bring down a little drop-down menu for USB computer connection. Tap it and put a checkmark in the "Media Device MTP" box.
Now you can plug your touchpad into the computer at will and transfer files back and forth from it. Easy as pie, I'm not sure why this isn't activated by default, but it's a simple fix if you know what to do."
Sorry I copied this from XDA a couple of weeks ago, so I can not take credit for this but it works great
that is already done on my android, and the touch-pad should auto connect. but neither are it says device not recognized

to me, this screams missing drivers for both devices.

Novacom shouldn't make a difference, I have just installed windows 8 on my laptop and haven't installed anything yet , just plugged in the Touchpad and it was recognized straight away
Sounds like either windows is messed up or the USB connector of the Touchpad has gone .
same error on TP + his galaxy??
dam the luck..busted ports on both devices at the same time..
right after a fresh format of windows ; what a coinkadink
if on your very longest shot that win needs new drivers, the palm / novacom etc
process installs them and TP will get recognized and picked up..

Ok lets get a few things right
I do know how to root my device I did it a while ago and honestly haven't done it in a while so I am rusty
but that being said if you cant access the device at all even in usb mode then you cant root.
And yes now my galaxy s3 wont recognize either.
every time i try it tells me that there was a device error and windows doesn't recognize the device.
i formatted the cpu again and put windows 7 and no help
I have tried two diffrent touchpads one android and one web os
and my phone
to get things right you have to start at the beginning. Windows will not recognize TP w/o the drivers first. It's obvious you have been avoiding that step. you need to go back and do the whole nova com thing to install them before you attach TP to it.. look at the you tube videos. you will be finished in a few minutes. .

WP8 is not detected by my computer - does not appear in windows explorer

My HTC 8x for T-Mobile doesn't show up in windows explorer. It suddenly stopped after working perfectly from the day I got it. I thought it may be my computer, like a missing driver or a setting but it doesn't work on my work computer, while my friends lumia works perfectly on the same computer.
Did there a setting I switched off in the phone?
I really don't want to hard reset cause I have so many email accounts set up with the phone. Any help would be great!

or try to delete driver and reconect phone.
didn't do anything. Plus it doesn't work on another computer that detects my friends lumia.
Anyone have any ideas? Please any help?
I had this problem on my computer that was previously connected to my Lumia920, and the second time I have connected it, nothing detected. I just plugged/unplugged the device several times, and after 5-6 times, there it was. Is ur device functioning properly? Is there any sound of connection from ur computer when u connect ur device?
Is your phone locked, by chance? I noticed that if the phone is locked it will not expose the file subsystems unless its unlocked.
some people have also reported that using a different usb port in your computer also helps.
Make sure you are using short USB cable that is working with another phone. Half of problems i have with computer "not detected" phones was due to low quality USB cables and under-powered USB ports, especially ones located at front of computer. Try to experiment with different USB cables and USB ports on different computers, this sounds stupid but helps in half a cases .

I have some problems with my Lumia 920 when the cord is to long!

Hope it helps
Watch for Memory card!
Hi,
Try to remove the memory card and reattach the device.
It solved the problem for me and read on some places about it.
Be careful what size and 'shape'(brand) memory card you use as it can block usb usage as it seems for me.
Method 1:
Disconnect all the external devices (printers, scanner, USB (Universal Serial Bus) drives, etc...)Except mouse and the keyboard and then boot up.
If this corrects the issue then add the devices back one at a time until you discover the piece of hardware causing the issue. Then get any updated drivers\software for the device.
Method 2:
If you still come across the issue, I suggest you to run Hardware Troubleshooter and then check for the issue.
Method 3:
If the above step does not help us to diagnose the issue, uninstall the drivers for USB [Universal Serial bus] host controller and restart the computer. Let Windows install the generic drivers and then see if it helps you to fix the issue.
a) Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button, then Device Manager in the search box.*
b) If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
c) Look for the device under USB [Universal Serial bus] host controller, right click on it and select Uninstall.
d) Reboot the computer.
e) On reboot, Windows 7 should re-install the drivers automatically.
You may also refer the steps from the manufacture website or contact Nokia for any known issues.

Try installing the Nokia Software Recovery Tool or the Nokia Care Suite. It should install all of the drivers necessary to connect your device. There is probably a driver corrupted.
the question you need to ask is if your friend has the same model Lumia as you. If he doesn't, it could be a problem with the driver on your PC.
If he does have the same model as you, it has to be a problem with your phone. You need to do a factory reset.
Have you checked if it works with the Windows Phone app?
Also, there is really no reason to have a need to connect it to a PC. As long as you store your documents and photos in OneDrive, you can easily access them from your PC without having to connect your device.
