Hi,
im stuck on epf30 rom (still locked) and i read that the new korean froyo rom can be used on the epf30 rom to update it.
now here's my actual question, does anyone know or has anyone tried if it is possible to use the method of rooting the device without touching the bootloader as described here with the korean froyo:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=710842
basically all that would be needed is the ability to downgrade to one of the us roms.
any help would be appreciated!
Cheers!

Hey there,
i was just wondering if there is a way to "downgrade my N1 in order to root" like it is told in the tut "root w/o unlocking"
I've already tried the "Stuck on FRF91?" tut but unfortunately N1 told me "Main version too old"...
Any solution on this?
Thanks a lot!
EDIT:
Hi again,
i was trying just another passimg.zip and with this, there is no "sorry, but main version too old" message - hboot just loads the image, checks and then goes back to "hboot main menu" w/o doing anything... any ideas? used this: 22607-ERD79-update-nexusone-stock-signed.zip
EDIT2:
EDIT :
tried to flash the FRF91 universal update...it says:"signature verification failed" or something like that...
EDIT: same happens, when i try to "update" the VF FRF91 again - is there any way to "reflash" such as a recovery/BACKUP? thanks!
has nobody any idea?
Did you just try the rest of the guide without downgrading?
not yet - from which point should i start with?
"loop" - command doesn't work for me... (cmd window in sdk/tools )
I was having issues with the EPF30 VF firmware as well, eventually I had to unlock the boot loader then downgrade it to ERD79 once I did that I got the option for upgrading it OTA to FRF91 as I didn't want to root it. Looks like you may have to unlock it to get back down to ERD79 then root.
well, that is exactly the problem I got I don't want to unlock the BL until it is confirmed that there is no way to switch from VF FRF91 to US FRF91 (shouldn't it be nearly the same thing?)
I downgraded my N1 following that tut, but i used the EPF30 ROM instead.
Here is the link to the EPF30 ROM:

hmmm im wdonering the solution to this too

can you get root with this?
I think so, i didn't try it but i guess you can root with 2.1 (EFP30 VF)?
Can anyone confirm this?
You can give it a try.
w/o unlocking BL it's not possible! (vf 2.1)
if there won't be any solution (root w/o unlocking) i'm going to unlock BL this WE
Hi guy, i have a galaxy s i9000m (canadian bell version)
I had the phone flashed to 2.2 prior to unlocking it. Im woundering if i flashed back to jh2, will the unlcok still work?
I have successfully unlcocked other i9000m with the unlock tool
why dont try the samsung galaxy s unlock from the market?
I unlocked mined with that.
I have a similar problem: I updated to 2.2 and the marketplace app doesnt work for me. Where can i get the stock bell rom and will it even work if i go back to the old rom to get my unlock codes?
I just tried going back to stock as well as restoring a backup i had made of the stock rom, no luck still gives me errors.
DO THE UNLOCK BEFORE YOU UPDATE TO 2.2

You cannot downgrade your bootloader. I think you're stuck until someone finds a way to root the new HBOOT.
I just want to go back to the stock android 2.1 , then update it to 2.2 ofiicially without rooting
The 'custom ROM' you flashed is actually official FroYo. There would be no difference even if you downgraded and got official FroYo. (Its not possible yet as stated above anyway, but, just letting you know)
I recently bought a used captivate . The seller has advertised it as 2.1 .This will be my first android device and i have no idea what things should i do 1st .
i have the following questions:
1. if i get a device with Stock OS 2.1 ,should i directly update it to 2.2 with Kies Mini or first unlock it before upgrading to 2.2 .
Does the unlock process becomes difficult after an official 2.2 OR
The upgrade process becomes difficult after unlocking
2.since official 2.2 has been released there is no point in reading custom ROM threads .DO custom roms offer any advantage over the official 2.2?
3.Is tethering working on 2.2 ..i guess it was disabled on the lastest 2.1 update
4.HOW do i check if i got a phone with stock 2.1 and if it hasnt been flashed with custom roms and reverted back .This will be useful in troubleshooting if i get into any problems
personally a custom rom would be a better idea than stock 2.2, most custom ROMs are on 2.2.1. All preference though... I never personally liked the iphone-esque launcher of Samsung, so I tend to stay away from custom ROMs. Why would you go from a 2.2.1 version to a 2.2 filled with AT&T's bloatware.
Check phone info in settings to see what version it's on
And when you update to a new version it generally needs to be re-rooted especially if it's official.
In the Dev section you can find an Odin one-click to stock ROM
If you're on 2.1 you want to get your real official unlock code before you upgrade (once you upgrade you can't get this unlock code). Write the code down, just in case somehow the phone relocks (mine never has).
start reading. i cant STRESS that enough!!!!!
i read for 3 days before i flashed anything custom.
KNOW what you are doing so when you do mess up (we all do) you can properly explain what you screwed up...
start here,

then check out the stickies in each section of the captivate forum.

While it is easier to get the unlock code if the phone has never been flashed, it is far from impossible after.

not true. i unlocked on 2.2 last month. you just need a new version of your unlock program. or a different unlock program.
2.2 isnt new. ATT isnt the rest of the world. ATT was late. time for you ATT people to catch up to the rest of the world.
thanks for all the replies
There was a thread which said there are no workarounds for 2.2
how do i check if the seller has upgraded to 2.2 and then reverted back to stock 2.1 before selling me ? This will effect the unlocking process as there are many methods posted
What the official unlock code (is it through SGS Unlocker?)
Is the unlock code stored on phone or on SD card . i am not be getting the original SD card
The current official version for the carrier is 4.0.2 with firmware V10f.
I followed RadGasm's instructions over here in order to downgrade to V10c and thehn I used Bin4ry's method to gain root.
What are the next steps after this? I wanted to install one of the KitKat ROMs available for the phone, but when I installed CWM and attempted to flash and boot into recovery the phone soft-bricked, displaying the LGE_Security "unrecoverable boot loader error". I solved this by flashing back to V10c.
Does firmware or carrier matter when upgrading to a newer version of Android? Did I just get unlucky with CWM? I'd like to keep trying but with some guidance, because all these wasted procedures are getting to be quite annoying and time-consuming...
EDIT: so I gather Jelly Bean needs to be installed first? Can't figure out a way to do that...
Canadian p880 can't have jellybean, and thus cant have unlocked bootloader and custom roms. Sorry
edit:
some more info since this was written from my phone - canadian optimus 4x is actually branded p880g, and the firmwares for p880 simply can't be flashed. thus, the latest available version is ICS, unfortunately

That's unfortunate. I don't know about the versions for other countries, but my phone is an incredible piece of junk. It overheats, slows down over time, glitches, and drains the battery in record time. I was hoping new software might fix some of the issues.
WIND doesn't even offer this phone anymore... I'm a sucker for not having returned it within the first week.
Thanks for your reply!
