Nexus one potential - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Copied thread from another forum but there were no good answers and I know I'll get better answers here. So the question is, what can we expect from the Nexus one based on the hardware and the future google/developers software creativity?
From what I've seen:
- FM radio
- 720 recording
- better gingerbread UI
Also what is the likelyhood that we'll see the features from Google (un-rooted update)
(I know the information is available in other threads but it would be nice to have it all in one thread and also people knowledgable can speculate from what they know about programming)

Unrooted pretty much guarantee, just a question of time.
Rooted: gingerbread for sure. 720 most likely, I'd say. FM Radio - if google wanted it there, it'd be a part of 2.1 or 2.2 already. Something makes google not put FM radio there.

Any Nexus will see Gingerbread.
Non-rooted most likely won't see 720p recording, and almost certainly won't see FM radio. The purpose of the phone is to be developers' phone, so these features are very low priority for Google.
Rooted will most likely see both, since it only depends on the community, and both features are in quite advanced stage.

New ROM batches = bluetooth on G1?

All,
I know there are a bunch of folks out there with Tattoo and Hero 2.1 dumps cooking up some great new things. I was wondering, though - does any of this, especially Hero 2.1, offer hope to get BT working on G1s or will we face the same problems we did with the previous versions?
Thanks,
Vj99
firstly, this should really be in the QnA section
it is possible that bluetooth will be working to some extent now that the heros kernel source has been made open source
but we will probably need to wait for HTC to make the source available for 2.1
so probably not til its officially released unless there is some jiggery-pokery that can be done to make it work
I never could understand people's need to install proprietary UI's on their phones. And that is the only reason for possibly trying to install one of those incompatible builds.
Just stick with a build designed for DREAM and your bluetooth (as well as everything else) will work perfectly. No reason to beat your head against the wall when there is nothing to gain from it.
Always welcome people weighing in, but that said I have to say that any value of the replies is tempered by unnecessary comments about one's opinion that this should be elsewhere or wondering why someone would want something.
In short, I could phrase the same question 10 other ways and make it a development question. I also find other capabilities in these other firmwares that I value, so it is much more than a UI update.

Desire Camera simply not possible on Froyo for Nexus?

I've been looking around the development section here and Paul's modaco site for this, but it doesn't seem like anyone is working to get the camera application from the desire to the nexus this time around. Is it simply not possible this time, after the 2.2 Froyo update?
I had it in the 2.1 days, and it was great, what a beautiful difference in the picture quality.
I'd just like to know either way, even if it isn't possible, just to have the peace of mind and to stop looking for it everyday and being disappointed to see no news on it.

According to Cyanogen's changelog, it's being supported, just don't know if you can use the original files, or someone has to port it to 2.2. See here: http://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_vendor_cyanogen/blob/froyo/CHANGELOG.mkdn
# Common: Dual camera support - Cyanogen
# Common: Support for HTC camera firmware with extra features - Cyanogen, Qualcomm
# Common: Other camera enhancements - Cyanogen

[Q] question about cyanogen mod 7 rc1

i just downloaded and put cyanogen mod 7 rc1 on my nexus one. is there a 720p video recording file that i can put on my nexus one that will work on this current rom?
Ask in the RC1 thread.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=956196
Also i'm sure there are many 720p video files that will "work" on your N1.
I heard you had to flash another kernel to get back the enhanced camera on cyan 7. Without the source code release its really making it slow progress.
Lack of proper order in forums makes them a mess, and turns developer forum into crap, that's how.
Anyway, there is no 720p recording in the latest kernels yet.
Thread moved to Q&A.
Sure he asked in the wrong place, and I appreciate users calling it to my attention, but there's no reason to flame the OP here. We're also supposed to encourage a friendly environment, and other users may be newer to XDA or Android than the rest of us. We were all beginners at some point... At least I know I was!
Unnecessary posts deleted.
Anyway, thanks to those of you who helped maintain order and also helped out speedbreaker. As Jack_R1, cymru, and RogerPodacter said, you will need an alternate kernel to do 720p... And current 720p kernels may or may not work with CM7 very well. It's worth a shot though, just make sure to Nandroid backup before proceeding.
In the future, however, the more appropriate place to ask this kind of question is in the actual /dev thread pertaining to the ROM that you are having a certain issue / question with.
Just flash back to cyan 6. I just did because I need a good camera for this weekend, and cyan 7 doesn't have all the good stuff quite yet.

So what would you say.......

To convince someone that FLASHING the ROM on their GalaxyS or Desire is better than STOCK ROM, most people in general will not do this kind of thing lack of knowledge on the subject plus the thought of breaking it
So in order to make someone feel the need to upgrade from FROYO to GINGERBREAD with S-OFF bootloader etc.......how could you simplify it in a way they will understand
I don't convince them. Its their phone and their prerogative. I do link them up to XDA though, and go through basic benefits like smoother operation, better optics, overclocking, some great root only apps etc. But, in the end, I leave it up to them if they want to flash a Custom ROM or not.
Besides, another reason is because I wouldn't want to play tech support every time when each of them run into potential problems flashing ROMs, or experience ROM bugs. Another thing is that most people I know with Android phones get intimated and give up reading the first few intro threads for their device, no matter how simple.

Some of them simply don't want the hassle.
Gingerbread has security fixes and added features. They like music? What about all those equalizer apps only available to 2.3? I'd also mention the option (for low internal memory devices) that rooting allows (in CM at least) apps to be moved to the SDCard that stock does not. I'm sorry if that wasn't what you were looking for, but those are some reasons I gave Sparky (and He's clueless about this stuff)

A lot of cool reasons, but most of them just wants a phone that works...
I've been there, and I have managed to get a few (just a few) to move over to Android. Another girl I know is planning to move up to Android as a legitimate smartphone instead of BB. And almost everyone in my church will be switching over to Android (including my pastor). So... I guess tech-evangelism works?
if his your son then sure he will listen to you , but to convince people to do that its quit harder reason because they are afraid maybe or something
usually to convince someone to buy something you have to show him\her what this thing can do , so probably you need to show him some vanilla love or just let him\her suffering of Froyo

[Q] Which rom?

Hey all, I've been out of the Touchpad loop for about a year now. Currently running a CM rom (7 maybe?) that's on 4.0.1. I'd like to upgrade to a new rom. I don't have a lot of spare time to play around flashing different roms, so I would like to ask if anyone can give me some advice; and going through 20 some rom threads to read reviews is taking forever.
I would like to get the newest rom possible with the most things working. Number one priority for me is battery life, which from what I've been reading, that pretty much rules out 4.4 roms. So I assume I should look for a 4.2 rom? The other things that I would like is bluetooth for my keyboard, and hw video. Camera and mic would be a plus, but not 100% necessary. I'm sure you all are tired of these threads, but if anyone would like to help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.
Which ROM questions are generally discouraged on XDA forums. Avoids "mine is bigger" arguments and honestly what works best for one person and on one devices isn't the same as others. There are a number of great ROMs out for what is an abandoned product thanks to great developers. Best bet is to look at the Android developer subforum and read each ROM thread to learn about each ROM, any issues that existed or still exist, and different features. Also check on YouTube for videos of ROMs to see them in action. Also check Google+ since discussions also happen there.
Last, make sure to follow the developers directions completely. And try a few ROMs out... That way you can determine what really works best for you on your device. And... It's fun. Good luck!
