This is a pretty easy process. I went in to Root Explorer - dbdata - databases - com.android.providers.settings, copied settings.db to my sd card, edited it on my pc with a db editor changed 0 to a 1 next to non market apps. Copied it back to the original directory, rebooted and installed a non market app.
Please use caution. If you want to make sure the db save properly open it on your sd card before you copy and replace the original. It should open up as a readable table. If it opens up in a txt editor its corrupt. This permanently enables non market apps. You can not toggle it on and off.
I will try and post pictures soon.

Does it mean th after this you are able to install any 3rd party application with no restrictions?
Thanks
You can actually do it through firefox too. There's a firefox addon called 'SQLite manager' that you can use to edit the file, if you don't want to download a separate program.
Root Explorer is the pay program on the market? Any free alternitives?
Are you just trying to install non-market apps on the Captivate? If so, then just download the usb driver for the Captivate and then Droid Explorer (may also need SDK installed; not sure). With Droid Explorer, you can easily load non-market apps within seconds. Good solution for a non tech guy like me.
Being brand spanking new to Android, still have question. I like very specific instructions.
Do you download files to whatever directory you want to make and put the files in? Then is there an option to select, and do install? My background is WinMO, so on that you can just use a file explorer and double click or tap, and it installs.

So if I installed "PDAnet" for tethering it will work after rooting?
Thanks for the answer
PDA Net will work without rooting. Just put your phone on airplane mode and enable wifi. Go to the market and download it. Once it is downloaded you can turn off airplane mode and you're good to go.

Where do you see the 0, the one you recommend to change to a 1? I only see lots of squares.
So... Thank you so much for this info. I downloaded your file and put it into the correct DIR and have non market apps installing with no problem. However I can not get Titanium backup to work correctly. =/ When I try to restore an app it says installing and I have to force close titanium to get it to stop. Probably about half the apps I try and do this for install the other backups do not. Is any one else having any issues like this or know how to fix it?

Where did you see the number to change? Mine just looks like a bunch of gibberish
When into this dir dbdata - databases - com.android.providers.settings and cant find any files. Using linda
I used this DB editor instead
http://sqlitestudio.one.pl/index.rvt
connect to the settings.db file, on the left side click Tables, and then click Secure. It will show a grid on the right with _id, name, value etc. Click the Data tab, in the search box type market. And there should be only one value that shows up as "install_nonmarket_apps". Set the value to one. Refersh it and then copy it back to your phone.

I'd really like to use this app, and it DOES install to my Pro. Unfortunately, when I attempt to open the app, it simply gives me an error message.
While I'm having problems, it would seem that some people are using TF3D Config with no problems.
Anyone have any idea what the prob could be?
Why the hell did they make a customization program for the Diamond, but not the pro?!
You probably need to install the .NET 3.5 cab for it to work. There is a link somewhere in this forum, sorry I don't have it.
Here's the download link for .NetCF v3.5 taken from this post.

i have net 3.5 installed and TF3D Config still doesn't work with my TP.. really want to try changing my theme badly.. pls guide me ya.. thanks
If you are having problems getting it to run and your reg is correct DELETE the tweaks.xml file in the programs folder. you find this in file explorer or what ever program you prefer, Look where you installed it to. Internal or storage card, for example storagecard/programs/diamondtf3d/ HERE is where you will find the tweaks file to delete. then retry running tf3d. It seems you have to do this on the CDMA phones. It worked for me.

Try one other thing. Install .Net Configuration to internal memory (cab below). This allows you to change the compact framework version used for applications on your device.
Run '.Net Configuration' from your Start Menu.
Go to the 'Device Policy' tab and select version 3.5.
Selecting 'Apply' then 'OK'
That should do it.
thanks for your help.. after hard-reset, i managed to use the TF3D config (after installing netCF and the config that you attach).. thanks

There is another option though: simply replace the original "tweaks.xml" file with the file supplemented on this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3052976&postcount=1211
(just save the file as a .xml file rather than it's current .txt version).
After I switched the files, I was able to use the Tweaks option on Diamond TF3D Config, and in my opinion, the tweaks made a HUGE difference to the overall performance of TouchFlo 3D on my Sprint Touch Pro.
this didnt work for me on alltel...any advice so i can use TF3D tweaks

Hey ive installed the tf3d config and deleated the tweaks file for my touch pro but once i run the program and go to the tweaks Tab its blank and wont let me tweak anything, my theory is because i dealeated the tweaks file but if u have to deleat that in order for it to work why have it....well the real question is, is there any way to install tf3d config and runit without having to deleat the tweaks file so i can ACTUALLY tweak my htc touch pro??
the tweaks file
i did what this post is say to get the app to install and it is running BUT how do you adjust any of the performance screen sensitivity with the tweak file gone?
is there anyone that has got this to run on a htc pro adn are able to set the screen sensitivity? i came from a htc 6800 and that way a great screen this one seems like i need to push on it like the berrys storm (it SuXs)
Problem solved. Thanks.
i've installed all above suggested programes(.net CF 3.5, netcfcfg) and applied new settings and restarted the phone. it's just not working on my touch pro 2. the error message i've got is "Diamond TF3D Config.exe NotSupportedException"
anyone has the same problem? any sugguestion or solutions please!! thanks a lot!
Long time forum fan, first post! I'm a little scared from that registration video, but here we go: After rooting my phone, I did a complete backup with Titanium Backup before deleting all kinds of Verizon and Motorola bloat. Now my Droid 3 is experiencing the hardware keyboard repeating space thing described in many other threads. One of the solutions I read about was to try the new OTA update, but I also read that this requires all the bloatware to be back where it was when I got the phone. So, I went in to Titanium Backup and managed to restore a few of the files, but most of the time, when I try to restore a file, I get the little spiny animation forever. I've tried a couple different Busybox versions, direct access and indirect access. Nothing seems to help. In the future I plan to explore other backup solutions, but for now, I'm stuck with all these backups I can't restore. So, now I guess I need to know a way to manually restore the backed up files. Any ideas?
Try Pete's Root Tools and there is a restore system app option
So that app will use the titanium backups? Happen to have a link for that app?
Its not an app, you connect your D3 to the computer and run the batch script. I cant post links cuz I'm on my phone but i believe Pete posted it in a thread called "unroot" i'll edit my post if i can find it.

/ indicates file path. You dont need to type it into the file name. Just place the restore folder inside of the main folder, and extract all the apk's to it.

The directory you run the tool from to restore the system apps should look like this:
Also, if you are on XP, make sure you are using the file for XP (found here: http://www.psouza4.com/droid3/) and not the one for Vista/7 that I linked to in my original post.
Thanks for the reply.
The Win 7/Vista version installed and launches on my XP machine and gives me the restore option pictured in your post.
The XP version you linked me to does not include the restore function (as far as I can tell).
Can I try using the 7/Vista file or will it bork my phone.
Also, will this wipe my phone?
TIA
Please, cant download DROID3_original_system_app.zip anyone has it??
So i read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/rom-size-rooted-6-0-t3219852 and its seems to me that im not the only one with only 16mb of space left in the system partition (after busy box). This pretty much denies me to do anything like edit build.prop to get the multiwindow feature, or to write GSam battery monitor root app to system (even though these take up mere bytes/kbytes of data, 16mb is not enough).
Just putting it out there. Im not sure if im the only one who has trouble actually manipulating the system partition, or is it just me. But when i use lets say, ES File manager to edit the build.prop (in root mode) and all i do is ad 5 letters to the whole thing (d e b u g) ES file manager will tell me it cant save it because there is no space in system.
Ive tried messing with permissions to see if i could override to no avail, and tried using twrp but it doesn't offer me any options to do so.
So how are we gonna solve this now?

Think about it for a minute.
You have 16mb free and that prevents you from editing build prop?
How characters are what, 8bits? How many lines are you adding to go over that 16mb.
Something else is obviously the problem. That's not to say the 16mb free thing won't also cause issues when you go to install something to to system... But its not what is preventing your edits to build.prop, considering you could copy that file several times over with that space.
R/W privilege seems finicky for now, and requires kernel support. I've read at least one other post about build prop edit failures where even rooted with a custom kernel it didn't work. I know it will on Benzino, sure there are others, and everyone else will catch up eventuality.

I've seen a few people trying to install small mods (couple of MB) but only had 16 MB free and it wont let them. Clearing more space (get to about 64 MB Free) and you should be able to do anything with small files, but ideally you would have more. 16 MB does seem to be the problem point though.
Can you open a terminal, request su privileged, then do a "touch /system/test"?
If not, its not free space. It does not take 16mb to write a plain text file that is 4.62kb in size. Try a different kernel (I KNOW Benzino works), I wrote to my build.prop yesterday with out clearing any space.

Android does not let you write down to 0 bytes free
It will let you write lower then 16mb. Because I just did it.
That's why I said use the touch command to test, it creates a 0kb file.
There have been multiple reports of "not enough space" being fixed with an updated supersu, and a kernel with the proper modifications needed for r/w and root on M. (Take a look at the lean kernel thread posts from this morning. Exact same issue. "Not enough space" till he updated supersu, older version of supersu worked with certain kernels)

I just Removed Sheets and Docs which come with the stock rom and i got like 70 MBs of free space , enough for me to do my job but I prefer it was a little more in the beginning.
I deleted all Google Apps that I knew I could find on the play store using titanium and reinstalled from the store. Freed all that I'll ever need. Course I'll have to reflash the system partition before updating.

Don't delete the google camera app. Even though I have another camera app, I removed the Google camera and was stuck in a bootloop.
I just did a clean install of MM and I am running into this issue with AdAway. I have disabled/uninstalled Play Books, Movies and TV, Newstand, Keep, and Sheets.
I believe I have ROOT set up properly because I have other apps utilizing it privileges. Only one not working is AdAway 3.1
How much more do I have to uninstall?

disabling doesnt remove them. deleting them removes them(or moving them to user space).

"disabled/uninstalled" are two very different things. Disabling the apps does not free any space, uninstalling them will.
Hi,
I'm fiddling with my new s20 FE, I needed to manually add folders to My Files in 'Android /Data' to transfer data from a game (which I've done before on other devices) However, when connecting S20 to PC I can access all files and copy/paste into place, BUT on my phone none of these files will show up (No Files) and the game is not responding to the data I added.
Also tried through DeX and files don't show. Hidden files is checked and developer mode is on. Any ideas?

I'm fiddling with my new s20 FE, I needed to manually add folders to My Files in 'Android /Data' to transfer data from a game (which I've done before on other devices) However, when connecting S20 to PC I can access all files and copy/paste into place, BUT on my phone none of these files will show up (No Files) and the game is not responding to the data I added.
Also tried through DeX and files don't show. Hidden files is checked and developer mode is on. Any ideas?

You can access the partition with selected file managers, e, g, Total Commander.
More information here: https://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?p=396463&sid=ac32535f4510c1c1a5bf7fa5abf3a43b#p396463

Well here is your solution buddy, you updated to 11 yet? I don't know if it's available to 10 since this is new info to me.
You can try Solid Explorer too. It is excellent and you can have access to android data and obb.
Thx Ill look at those options!

Did you figure out how to transfer over the data with total manager apk? Mine won't allow a copy and paste

From the the site homepage it says it only supports accessing /data partition from android 11, so i think it shoul only work on android 11 as i said.
Have you tried this? It doesn't need root.
sounds like Total Commander have decided to copy LCG's X-plore with the two panel windows.
all decent file browsers have been able to access storage/0/emulated/Android/data the whole time and micro SD equivalent too.
it's only with android 11 that google's new security layer has removed that access for SDcards. their new security has also made the file system 6 times slower in copying or moving files etc. hopefully OEMs will pressure google to fix it.

I believe you misunderstood the topic of the thread. We're discussing the possibility of accessing /data partition without root permission on android 11, even with scoped storage security feature. You can read about it the the link in the 3rd post above.
I never heard about google forbidding access to sdcard from apps, can you elaborate?

I think I understood OK, changes to the file system include no longer accessing Android/Data. that's not the data partition as far as I'm concerned, it's still accessible from internal storage but not from external.
Ever since I updated to the latest firmware (magisk rooted) my Galaxy Tab S8+ can no longer use Smart View or second screen. It worked fine on the previous firmware version even when rooted.
I've seen a suggestion to add "wlan.wfd.hdcp = disable" to the build.prop file, but I can't seem to edit build.prop even using a root explorer, or not even by using the twrp file manager. I've tried using various buildprop editors, granted them root access yet they still don't seem to be able to change anything in the file.
Is there any other possible fix?
The open source Material Files file manager has been repeatedly and highly recommended in my phone's XDA section for true root file management. https://github.com/zhanghai/MaterialFiles
It's also available through F-Droid, and the Play Store. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.zhanghai.android.files
A lot of root file manager either haven't been updated (or aren't allowed to be - not sure what the story is) to really do full root file management.
Hope this helps. Note, I've installed this app but haven't really done anything with it yet.
Thanks for suggestion, but even using Material Files I still get the same error. I granted file access permission and root access to the app, I clicked Remount as RW but it still gives me an error saying read-only file system.

That is probably because root permissions have been lost. When you root the device and then flash new update it will usually revoke the root access and you have to re-root again with updated root method. Reason is becuase update affects the root access by reseting it. Since if root method has edited any system files to gain root access then update writes over those files which is why root access becomes revoked.
So my suggestion is to re-root your device and try editing same file again and I bet issue you got will be gone.

I get the exact same thing when I tried to save the modified boot.prop with Material Files, so you're not alone.

I definitely have root access, I granted root permissions to Material Files, but I got the same result when trying to save an edited boot.prop.
@emko7
Edit 1: I just remembered that there is a Magisk Module out there folks have used on Android 12 (at least on the Pixel 6 Pro, which I have) that "emulates" having full root access. i.e. to my understanding, you don't actually do anything permanant to the files that require root, but it effectively acts as if you did. If you edit the boot.prop, technically it doesn't save to the actual original location, but your changed version is remembered and substituted when you boot/reboot.
I haven't re-located what the name of the Magisk Module is - I know it's been mentioned many times in the Pixel 6 Pro section, but I'm not sure if I can come up with the correct search terms to find the posts.
*Some* Android FIle Managers, like my preferred one X-Plore File Manager, makes it look like saving an edited boot.prop worked, but after a reboot I saw that the boot.prop edit clearly wasn't permanent. It's possible and probable that if I just re-loaded the edited boot.prop, I would've seen that my changes weren't saved, either.
Edit 2: After a tiny bit of research, I think it's possible this is the reason full root access doesn't give us r/w access to everywhere is the information presented in this Twitter thread (read the additional comments by Magisk's creator):

How exactly would you disable the "cpu battery limit"?
