Good for sense UI roms? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

quick question, and im sorry if it has bin answered but... is a 16 gig class 2 sd card stable enough for a sense ui rom to work on a G1 with no problems??
or what a good sd card for the sense ui roms to work as good as the cupcake or the eclair roms?
thanks

For swap, which you absolutely need with Sense, you should use the fastest card you can get, which is currently 6 (although there are some C10 cards floating around, I don't think anyone here has tried them in the Dream).
Honestly on a card like that Sense will not be usable. I have CM6 running with a 64mb swap partition on a class 2 card and I still get the homescreen reloading 50% of the time.

HM, i see...so class 6 is much more stable workin' in other words.
so even if the sd card has alot more space, its still lags since its class 2?
i have cm 6 workin' on mine aswell, and its 16 gb.
but it some times loads up from time to time...nothin' big... i just haven't tried one of those hero sense UI roms on it since i recently got the card and i wanted to know if it would work as good as the cm6 rom( froyo) rom i got on my g1...

Class for sd card's is how fast you can read/write to the memory card. Class 2= 2MB/S and class 6=6 MB/S. It doesn't matter if the class 2 is 128 GB and the Class 6 is 2 GB, the higher class sd card will always perform better. The write limit to my phone is somewhere around 3.5 MB/S, so a class 4 will satisfy that. A class 10 is pure overkill unless you have an HD 1080P camcorder that needs the extra speed.

Apps2SD - Class 2 SD Card ?

Hello Friends,
Wanted to ask you all if Class2 Sd Card is suggested for app2sd.
The whole reason of buying a 8GB SD Card was to use apps2sd.
But after buying i realized its a class 2 and when I flashed Dwang-v1.11 ROM my G1 is running very smooth.
The latest v of Dwang has apps2sd.
This post is to confirm my understanding and create awareness about the Class 2,class 4 and class 6 SD Card.
Thanks in advanced as I have always got amazing response from all u guys.
Class 6 is recommended.
Yep Class 6 all the way.
The class of an sdcard is a measure of the *minimum* performance.
Not the maximum.
A real good class 2 card can be faster than a bad class 6.
Or, it could be relative to chip yields. Basically, not all chips produced will be exactly identical, some may just happen to work faster than others.
In other words, a lucky class 2 card is fine. The recommended minimum of class 6 increases the CHANCES of having a good experience with it.
I also have a class 2 card, 16gb. All normal Android roms run great with it, but don't even think about running Hero. Your phone is so slow, it's unusable. No problem with any of Cyanogen's roms.
I used an 8GB class 2 w/ apps on ext2 for ages, didn't have any issues. The performance wasn't noticably different when upgrading to an 8GB class 6 w/ ext3. You'll be fine.
Any way to turn off the apps 2 sd on Cyanogen's mod
Hello,
I just flashed my phone with the latest Cyanogen's mod 4.2.14.1 and experiencing a lot of lag while opening any application.
Even the dialer gets stuck, messaging is getting stuck.
It would be great if the apps run on the rom rather then through the sd card till I get a class 6.
Any help is highly appreciated, as I have started avoiding making calls from my G1 due to the lag.
Else suggest a better ROM if there is no easy solution to turning off apps2sd
Worst Class 2

Hi AdrianK,
Thanks for sharing your experience but may be i got the worst quality of class-2 mmc as mentioned by lbcode, which might be causing this problem.

The system applications are stored on the ROM, not on the SD card.

Most roms now, if you don't have an EXT partition, will skip apps2sd.
thanks
Hey thanks will try removing my ext partitions...
Thanks a lot for the help friends

Hero ROMS without Class 6 SDHC

I am curious to know which Hero ROMS run smoothly without a Class 6 SDHC. I am currently running JACHeroSki2.7.4r2 with no problems. However, I cannot run any of the new Eclair Hero ROMS. Is a Class 6 SD a requirement for those now?
They were never required for me atleast...I switch b/t mt class 2/4/6 every now and then(dont wanna repartition)..I dont notice any big diff b/t the classes..However apps load slower on class 2 than my 4/6.

[Q] Class 6 or Class 10?

Heya Guys,
I'm completely new to SGS and Android in general
Bought my SGS a Week ago and im quite satisfied with it so far. ( Got almost stock froyo -- TouchWizGTG launcher and a voodo lagfix )
I wonder now, if there is a major speed improvement with a class 10 microSD Card with the the SGS over the class 6 card. Is the device even capable to handle a class 10 card and is it worth the buy, will it reduce lags? oO
Well, thank you in advance \o/
The speed of the microsd won't affect your system speed, because no critical files are placed on it.. (long time ago there was a lag fix that moved stuff to sd, but the newer ones don't do that).
The only difference would be reading/writing to the SD, and unless you're going to be doing stuff like high res video recording to the sd or something, I really don't think it matters.
The internal SD card is class 6 or so btw, and it works fine. You probably won't notice a difference.
i have my external SD card at class 4, 16 gb, no problems seen in terms of read / write speed.
Oh! Thanks for the fast answers!
Think I will buy a class 6 then. Thank you very much! U saved me alot of money

Lexar/Patriot 32GB microSDHC card

Hi,
Has anyone tried either the Lexar or Patriot 32GB microSDHC card with their Droid/Milestones?
Any issues at all?
Thanks!
Any information at all would be appreciated.
I haven't been able to find any information by searching forums.
I am running Cyanogen 6, 2.2.1, so I should be able to format the 32GB card. I'm just concerned with compatibility issues with the original Droid 1 and the Milestone.
Anyone?
Thanks!
this would be interesting for me too. im searching a 32 gb card which is workin!
yeah, would love to hear something about 32gb goodness too ^^
Yeah I'm surprised that we aren't getting more feedback with this topic.
I've found threads with 32GB cards with EVOs and Droid Xs, but, that's about it.
I think it helps if you manage to get it formatted properly, either on a desktop computer or on your device (if it supports it).
I'm tempted by the Patriot 32GB Class 10, but, some of the people on Newegg seemed to have some issues with it on a their Droid Xs.
Im using a 32gb class 10 lexar microsd in my milestone, so far its working great and have had no problems

Do you experience any subjective speed increases with the new card?
Have you run any SD Card speed tests with the card? If not, would you mind doing so and reporting back?
Just wondering if the Milestone will benefit from a class 10 card (or any card greater than class 2).
Thanks again!
i got 8.8MB/s write speed and 12.7MB/s read using antutu system review btw im also using apps2ext and cm7. I dont know by using apps2ext if the benchmark is effected. I was using a 16gb class 2 Kingston card before this and generally haven't noticed much of a speed difference but I mainly use the card for music
Edit: SD tools gets 10.6MB/s writing speed and 14.4MB/s reading speed

Hi,
Thanks for sharing your results. Those performance speeds are quite attractive!
I'm surprised that you you don't feel any subjective speed increases though. I would have thought that when accessing applications stored on your SD card, or when you initially remount your SD card and have to search through media using Gallery, that the difference would have been significant.
Although it is possible that our phones doesn't support much more than Class 2 speeds.
But, at least we know that the Lexar card is compatible with the Droid/Milestone!
Thanks very much for the information!

Class 2 is (roughly speaking) 2MB/s writing speed. Imagine you want to copy a lot of mp3's or a movie (or use it as USB dongle) with 2MB/s. unusable.

Oh sure, I understand that a faster card will make file transfers with my desktop much faster. I guess I was hoping to get more of a performance boost from my phone (ie. Apps2SD) with a faster card.
I'm not sure I'd call 2MB/S unusable for desktop file transfers. But, then again I don't change the music on my phone more than once a month. I can see it being more troublesome if you changed it more regularly. And hey, more speed is always good
Something else to consider - I have an 8GB class 2 card.
Loading angry birds seasons from my SD card = 15 seconds
Loading from internal memory = 9 seconds

Yes, that's a great point. I just don't know if the Droid/Milestone can take advantage of a microSDHC card with a higher transfer rate than Class 2.
Have you tried a faster card with your phone?
Does anyone have any comparison numbers with faster cards and application loading using Apps2SD?
Thanks!

Wow, impressive numbers. I wish the Droid/Milestone had half that performance
Is anyone using the Patriot 32GB with a Droid/Milestone?
With the Milestone SD card which came with the phone (I think this is a UK retail version) "OEM SD SU08G", I got these results:
3.8 / 14.8 MB/s
I added this simply to have something to compare with.
Will edit this image of the results in later: thumbnails37.imagebam.com/12224/fae506122237685.jpg

Thanks for sharing.
I get similar results from my no-name stock 16GB card.
I'm using the Patriot 32GB microSDHC class 10, so far it works well in my milestone.
Below is the screenshot by SD tool.
A comment:
Using this kind of sdhc which is c10, try not move the files too much once a time from pc to ms, or it might caused reboot or something else.

Hi,
Thanks for sharing your results!
You're the first person I've heard of who is using this combination. Your speed test results are very impressive.
May I ask you to clarify your comment regarding reboots? Do you mean that if you move large files, or a large quantity of files from your PC to your Milestone, that you have been experiencing reboots? What other issues have you been experiencing?
Have you noticed any kind of speed increase?
Thanks!

In my place, there are many persons who are using this sdhc, so don't worry MS can support it.
In our experenice from our fourm, some MS work great and nothing happened.
But, some MS including my MS have the problem about reboot, app exit when you are using it, if you move a large quantity of files once a time from PC to MS.
There is also a problem from my experenice, not for all others.
My MS could not identify the SD card, or need to format the Sd card.
In this situation, the SD card repairation by some sd format app could be settle the problem, and then the card is back. The information of the repairation shows that there are some unknow link, bad sector, or error link. When I look further, I find the files that often appear above three error message are in the below folders /sdcard/LOST.DIR and /sdcard/LazyList. Thus I think these are the reason why the problem happens.
There is an interesting thing. I have fat and ext partitions in my card, but the partition of ext never has any problems. Last month, I format the fat32 by 64K formation, and it works well so far. (someone prefers 32K)
The speed increase. Yes, but not so significantly. I feel the system is more smooth. The delay when open the app is also less, but you know the speed also involve the size of memory. So, it's haven't extreme different.

[Q] SD Card Upgrade

I'm looking forward into upgrading my SD Card, right now it's the default CLASS 2 with 2gb. I pretend to buy a 16gb class 10 one, from Adata.
But I need to know some things first. The only reasons that I want to upgrade is to get more space to install apps, place musics and maybe expand my RAM a little.
So, is it possible to expand my ram? I don't want performance upgrade, it's just that I tend to multitask a lot of programs and my memory runs out really fast.
If so, how much more memory I can allocate on my SD?
Same for apps.
How much big can my apps partition be?
I saw that the recommended limit is something around 1.2/1.3gb, but is there a safe way to expand a little bit further? Or would it make the phone too much unstable?
And also, is it really worth it to upgrade my SD to a CLASS 10 one with 16gb? Or is it just a waste of money?
Thanks for the support and excuse me if I'm asking on the wrong section/way. I found somethings about it but there was nothing too much concrete. :/
EDIT
I just flashed my X8 with the latest firmware and baseband, as pc companion didn't want to install the baseband ..15 nor the newest drivers. Also installed the CM7, dualtouch and all that crap. It already installs apps to the SD and I've noticed a small slowdown on app startup. Would a class 10 sd soft it out?
Up to 200MB on SWAP partition, up to 2GB on apps EXT3/4 (any1 have so many of them???) rest for music/videos etc.
I have made a guide for partitioning the SD with ext+swap (you need AlfsKernel+GDX)
Look my signature
Thanks. But just another question. Is it really necessary to have a Class 10 SD card, or would Class 2 (the default one) slow things down while using swap?
Edit:
Also, a class 10 sd card is way too much expensive for me. I found a 16gb one, class 4 but it's SDHC. Will my X8 read a SDHC?
Everything above (and including) 4GB is sdhc, so yes, it reads them fine. About speed, yes it's important, apps will load faster.. but never amazingly fast. The X8 is slow nowadays, don't expect awesome results. If you are used to class 2 speeds and you buy a class 10 card then yes, you will notice improvement.. Not that much with a class 4. Do you really need a 16GB card? Maybe a 8GB class 8 or 10 would be better if you don't need that much space.
About adding more ram, just forget it
Sent from my E15i using XDA App
I got almost 20gb of just music on my computer, full discography of bands and all. Basically, 90% of the sd will be dedicated to music then But maybe i buy a 8gb one, i just need to stop being lazy and copy only the musics that i want instead of CTRL+A, CTRL+C, CTRL+V it all. Thanks for the help by the way.
So class 6 sdcard is enough for x8?
