I try to avoid this sort of thing, particularly on this forum, but are you sure you really do this? Do you have good reasons? It sounds like you're just going to cause yourself trouble.

This.
On topic, though, I'm assuming you issued the command "fastboot oem unlock" to unlock your bootloader, and went through the steps on the phone to follow through on that action? Cause you won't get anywhere if that isn't done....

You typed the wrong filename.
You need to save the recovery image file in the androidsdk folder where fastboot.exe is located at.
Also your bootloader as to be unlocked.

Unlocking will change no data on your phone. Fastboot oem unlock and go
Ignore the above, unlocking will wipe your phone.
Take a backup via recovery, unlock, then restore it.

Did it erase your custom recovery?
I'm wondering if I will have to install ClockworkMod again.
Will leave recovery alone, it's /data that goes when the phone is wiped.

I dont mean to hijack a thread at the same time I don't want to start a new one on a simple question.
What is the benifit of an unlocked bootloader over just being rooted? With Gb on the horizon and every new update taking away easy root methods I've been debating on just unlocking and not worrying about it. Are there any other advantages?

That's one advantage, another is that it lets you use fastboot for flashing radios etc. You don't risk bricking your phone that way.
I have a locked bootloader, I just use flash_image to flash the radios or whatever. Works just like fastboot.

No, not "just like fastboot". If I'm not mistaken, flash_image doesn't check the signatures of the files being flashed, thus corrupt radios can be flashed using it, but they can't be flashed using fastboot - it'll safely revert the flash.

How to enable Developer Settings

This is essential to get an unlocked bootloader.

Because they are trying to make it a consumer phone as well as a developers phone. The average user doesn't need these settings, and could very easily mess up their phone by using them. With such an easy method to re enable them, why not do it?

Sure good to know, but what does it have to do with the bootloader? I thought that to unlock bootloader, you only need to "fastboot oem unlock"?
It's unlikely that I need to change an option in the menu in order to unlock... What if I somehow screw up and can't boot, and then lock to bootloader? Stuck with a brick?

You need to get into developer settings and activate USB debugging so you can use adb to proceed to unlock the bootloader.
Also I find the way to unlock developer settings to be quite humorous! Sadly I can see many impatient users looking to access said settings the first time be be put off by this, hopefully they will see reason!

You don't need adb to unlock the bootloader! Unlocking is done in fastboot mode, so saying "This is essential to get an unlocked bootloader" is wrong.
You can get to the bootloader (fastboot mode) by pressing the buttons during boot.

This is not just directed at the OP:
I think people should wait until they get a hold of the device before posting guides and directing others on what to do. Unless you actually try something and it works, I wouldn't be posting any guides.
Just to clarify some mis-information in this thread:
1) You do not need to install the SDK (and you do not need it to install the driver) -- the SDK is just a bunch of stuff that, unless you are developing, you will never need;
2) The driver for the N4 may not even be included in the SDK -- the GNex driver certainly wasn't;
3) For the fastboot driver to install (and for fastboot commands to work), your device must be booted in fastboot mode;
4) USB Debugging is a feature of Android, and to use it, you have to be booted into Android -- it has nothing to do with the bootloader;
5) Currently, there is no exploit to gain root on any build of Android higher than 4.1.1, so, there is no way to gain root without unlocking the bootloader at this time.

Also, 2 responders above in the same page say that.
Also, it doesn't make sense to me that fastboot's operation will check an option that is selected while you are in the OS.
If someone that has the device can check it then great, until then I'll assume USB Debugging is NOT needed to unlock bootloader.

[Q] Relocking bootloader

Hi I just want to ask whether my phone is unlock or not b/c I can't identify it,instead "icycoffee" is written on the top.I didn't do anything on it yet.Thank you!!

If you want to flash custom ROMs etc. you can start right away, your phone is S-OFF so there is no need to unlock the bootloader.
Just flash a custom recovery and it should be fine

No, you would only need this to fake your Bootloader version(or whatever) but since you are S-OFF there's no need for that
Just go to number 4. where it says "Flash a recovery" then 5. and after that number 10. That should be all

Questions After Unlocking Bootloader/Rooting INTERNAL STORAGE

I unlocked the Bootloader and Rooted, and I just pushed the M Developer preview to my brand new Nexus 6 (been out of the box for 2 hours).
I purchased a 64gig Nexus 6 from Google Store. After all of the above operations (used WugFresh Nexus Root Toolkit and RootJunky M developer ZIP), My Internal storage is shown at 23gig TOTAL! Less than half of what it needs to be.
Have I done something wrong? Can anyone help me?

You didn't do anything wrong. You need to factory reset in recovery. If that doesn't work, then in bootloader type "fastboot format userdata" (NOTE THAT THIS WILL WIPE THE CONTENTS OF YOUR SDCARD!).

Only if you choose to. And I'd advise you to study and understand the manual methods. Eventually something is going to go wrong. The sooner you learn this, the better.
