My wife is concerned that my new windshield mount for my N1 is inherently unsafe. She points to some US state laws (some which have been modified or rescinded) prohibiting windshield mounts for GPS devices.
Her concerns seem focused on both visibility obstruction and the chance that the mount could fly off the glass in an accident.
Is there any information you can suggest to help better understand this risk?
Thanks

Is it the official dock from Google or a third-party model? The official one from Google has this little disc you can stick on your dash to mount the dock anywhere you want. However, I haven't heard of any such suction cup issues...and the Dell Streak, which is a behemoth next to the N1, uses a suction mount on the windshield with no problems that I am aware of.

let me record out of the windshield... ie. let me record what i see when I drive...
I know, it's kind of a weird request, but is there one that will let me do this?
I highly doubt it, there is finally a company just now making a dock for the inc...but still not released yet. youre better off modifying an existing car mount to get that option or make something....can't be too difficult

if i remember correctly.. the holster on the htc car dock has the camera cutout so you should be able to use it. the holster mounts to the dock and lets you rotate it to landscape so that should let you see out
I have a mount like this from VZ.. It captures the mount in the scene, but could probably be modded.
Best Buy sells an adjustable universal window mount setup that works perfect. You can virtually adjust it any way to make it fit, and would work great for your application. Plus, the side grips have a nice foam type material that would soak up a lot of vibrations.

You could use a drill bit slightly larger than the camera whole. I actually have that verizon clip, and I think a mod would work quite well.

No no, it captures the suction cup in the view.. Not the phone cradle.
Check out the M25 Sound dock on amazon. I have one, the angle is adjustable, and it steers out the window.
UnRevoked HTC Incredible
You could always get one of those non-sliding, weighted suction cup mounts that go on your dash then use any mount and place it facing the windshield.
You could always try to eBay a cheap universal mount and cheap DInc case, then super glue them together for a cheap custom fit case
There's a car mount on eBay called the SlipGrip that has a ton of different mounting solutions and custom molded cradles for the DINC in various kinds of 3rd party cases (Otterbox, silicone, VZW case, naked). The suction cup mount has a nice long adjustable arm so you could mount it with the suction cup on your dash rather than the windshield and adjust the cradle so the arm isn't in the shot. The cradle also rotates 180 degrees so you can record vertical or horizontal.
I will sell you one for $50 that is really nice. The cradle is made for the phone and you can suction mount it to your window or glass nightstand table. I will post pics in the morning.
This might not be the right place, but I can't find an answer - is there a car dock that will fit the Seidio 3500 battery? I don't know if the large battery causes any problems with car docks, but I would assume it does...
i use one thats actually for a I*hone. It clips and leaves the camera unobstructed.
I was wondering if i made a custom mount for my tab that uses 4 neodymium magnets if it would mess up any of the internals of the device? Please don't recommend me a window mount. If you know of any low profile mounts (1/2" - 1/4" thick) tell me which one that is.
@padholdr on twitter has some expensive mounts but they look pretty legit, sturdy, and designed really well for most cars. good luck.
Thank you for the response. Does anyone else have an answer. Those mounts are nice, just not what I'm looking for.
Do you guys have a lot of experience with ProClip mounts?
I came across them the other day and it seems like a much better alternative to hoping/waiting for Verizon to release their own crappy suction cup mounts, but I wanted to see what people who have used them think.
Are the vehicle mounts as easy to install as they make them seem?
Is the device holder high quality?
Does the mount/holder combo stay firmly in place, or does it wiggle a bit?
Does the phone fit firmly in the holder, or does it wiggle any?
Any other thoughts?
I'm probably going to get one of these for my next phone (Incredible 4G), unless anyone has some negative experiences to share?
Has any one tried this mount with the nexus 7?
Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 (P3100) - Holder with Tilt Swivel
Item #: 511381
thanks
No, but I've emailed them. They said they are still waiting to receive their Nexus. Then they would probably have a 3-5 week period before they'd be available for order.
can we get a link PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEE
THANKS in advance
Here's a link to the one in question. I believe they also have one for the kindle fire. I'm sure one technically works based on size, but I'll wait for the actual Nexus one to be released.

Then you need the vehicle mount of your choice for your specific vehicle.
I have the iPad version of that mount and it's excellent albeit a bit pricey.
How do you mount it? Screw it on to the dash?
if you click the link above, you should see vehicle mounts.
They make different mounts for each car. Typically without the use of even double sided tape. Definitely no screwing to the dash.
The device mount, bolts to the vehicle mount. The vehicle mount is attached to your specific vehicle. Nothing permanent.
For my car for example, there are two mounts that use no tools at all, and one that uses double sided tape.
I bought a ProClip mount for my phone (Galaxy S II) and was unimpressed to find that it lightly clipped into the dash of my car, but was mostly held on with adhesive tape. On hot days, the tape basically melts and the mount stays lightly clipped in, but sags and moves around. Not the "perfect sturdy mounting solution" that was advertised.
I emailed support and their answer to me (paraphrased) was "well we've sold a hundred of these without issue, so we can't do anything for you".
Oh great, I feel like a moron for spending $85 on a phone mount. So, word of warning, depending on what car you drive and what type of mount you order, it might sag under the weight of the Nexus 7.

I love their holders (made by Brodit) but the dash adapters are weak.
I use a dash adapter from panavise. It is made of steel. The bolt patterns match those used by Proclip/Brodit. Works great.
I wish Brodit/Proclip would support the pogo pins and what-not.
I might try this out here soon, been wanting to do a full in dash install or radio replacement for the Nexus 7 but can't find anything for that.
So I had a burning desire to mount my Nexus 7 in my car (2008 Dodge Charger) for some time. But all of the docks/mounts out right now either use suction cups, are bulky, or block significant portions of the head unit in the vehicle already.
This has been a bit of an obsession, trying to find something that would work the way I wanted it to. I had a vehicle specific bracket that I used for my Sirius radio a few years ago. It has holes drilled for the AMPS universal mounting pattern. This is what I decided to utilize at this time. Just a few pics and links for now until I get some better pictures later.
AMPS T-Bracket
Arkon Slim Grip. I actually used the one that came with my ARKON Windshield mount, but I'm pretty sure they're the same thing.
This vehicle specific bracket was from Bracketron, however, it was purchased 3 or 4 years ago, so I don't believe it is made any longer. I couldn't find it on their website. However, a few other companies make vehicle specific brackets, and Panavise was on the ones I found with a quick search. I like the AMPS mounting system because it's fairly modular. Stay away from the RAM mounts, even though they make some very excellent products, they generally use proprietary accessories for their mounts.

I also use the Belkin BT adapter for playback of music. It's pretty much awful for anything besides phone calls.

I'll update later on.
nice
it is nice what you have done.
I have the exact same car dodge charger 2008 SE and I would like to know how I can remove the factory stereo that comes with the car ( same as the one you have in the pictures) and put the nexus 7 in its place.
if anyone had done this kind of project please send me the details on how to do it
Very cool and nice setup you have there although it seems like if you have a passenger in the car with you their view of the screen wouldn't be so good since it's on an angle.
One thing I'd like to know is though, is that bracket permanently attached to the car or is it just a matter of sliding in and sliding out that bracket that is between the crack there?

Thank you. I do have passengers that ride with me, but 90% of the time it's just me traveling for work. I didn't do this with them in mind. lol. However one modification I'll likely be doing to it is adding tilt/swivel adjust. Had it originally planned, but haven't found my solution yet.
The bracket is affixed to the car with the screws in the radio bezel. This makes it much more sturdy.
This isn't the same exact bracket as mine, but it's a similar one from Panavise. It uses the same screws.
