Data plan question on tilt 2 - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Just a simple question, does this phone require having a data plan if I buy it off eBay?

No, not if you don't call AT&T and tell them that you have a new smartphone. Caveat - if you do eventually want a data plan, you will have to give them your IMEI number before you can sign up for one. At that point, they'll know, and the data plan will become mandatory. How do I know this? I finally got a $15 data plan for my tilt, and had to contact them to activate it, as the online system wouldn't activate it.
The first text I got back was a love letter stating that if I "omitted" adding a data plan, one would be added for me. How sweet of them...

HTC Kaiser - what unlimited data plan can I use?

Howdy,
I currently have a Cingular 8125 and for the last year I've been using an unlimited data plan for $19.95. I think this data plan is only for cell phones (not PDA phones) and I honestly can't remember how I managed to pull this off. I think my last phone was a cell phone and they just transfered the plan over.
Problem is that when I buy the AT&T Tilt, I'm assuming they'll only offer me the unlimited PDA data plan, which is much more expensive.
So here's the question - any reason why I can't just pop out my existing SIM card and move it over? Do I need a new SIM card for the 3G functionality? Any way to move over my existing data plan?
I remember purchasing the Cingular 8125 a long time ago w/ a medianet plan I believe $19.99. The representative didn't mention anything about unlimited PDA data plan. So if you still have the $19.99 media plan, you should be fine with it if using the Tilt. I guess it all comes down to how much you use their data...
If your existing sim card is 3g capable stating that you got it last year, I'm guessing toward the end of the year, then you should be fine. If not, you will need to obtain a new 3g sim card from ATT...
hope this helps you...
at last a question i can answer lol.
There are a few ways to go about this
1. buy the kaiser/tilt/8925 outright pop in your sim ATT wont change a thing as they dont track the phone u are using for the most part
2. you can try to do a upgrade to get it cheaper the only problem with this is if you run into someone who is doing there job and checking to make sure you have the correct stuff for your plan. if you go about this route when you go into do a upgrade just tell them you want to upgrade your phone sign a new contract but you dont want anything changed on your plan. most times this will work.
other then that thats about it. Only other thing is you do need a 3g sim if yours is not already it will say right on it if its 3g or not. At a ATT store they norm give them away with upgrades as well as at places like radioshack. ATT sometimes will give you a new free sim if you say yours is lost or not working other places like RS just charge you 25 as thats what ATT charges them for them.

Cool - just checked my SIM card and it says '3G' on the back. I was going to upgrade to the Tilt via my corporate Web site, but that will force me to set up a whole new plan w/ the unlimited PDA package. Instead I'll try calling AT&T and doing the upgrade over the phone. I'll post back here to let you know if it worked.
Thanks for the info!
You can change it at any time....
On the AT&T account maintenance website, you can change your data plan to the Unlimited MEdiaNet for $19.95 if they make you sign up for a PDA plan when you get your Tilt. I did it last week.

Which site is that - just the main AT&T wireless site where you view your account details? And it lets you change to MediaNet, even if you have a PDA? Nice....
I am a customer with Rogers of Canada ...
got a free/unactivated SIM card ( came with my S621 ) ... I kept on using my old card from way back.
This new free card that came with the S621...it doesn't say "3G" on it ... just the Rogers symbol and 5 lines of 4 digits codes on the left side ...
when flip over to other side ( the gold contact side ) ... it said " HSDPA" ... what does that equivalent to ??
Found the answer to my "HSDPA" question:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSDPA
~~~
I have a question ...
I've been using the old card for the last few years .. this card does not have the HSPDA/3G imprinted on it ... but if I want to switch and let's say I told them my old card is damaged and wanted to use this new highspeed capable card ... will there be activation charges ??
other then what's labeled ... both card look exactly the same on the gold side
I tried that, got a confirmation email, but the service never activated.
When I called AT&T they said that that service was not available for me because I had a PDA phone and I shouldn't have been able to select it, much less get a confirmation email.
Tried it again two weeks later and the same thing happened.
it will be similar but yet not similar....................it will be threaded but it wont be all pretty; but yes threaded there is a video that shows this i dont recall which one due to the fact that there are like 30 videos on youtube......but its there somewhere
Thanks for the reply...I really got used to the 6.1 version. I hope somebody way smarter than me develops a nice program similar to what we have been using.
with this being so open...the sky is the limit on what can be done...look at what people have done with WM on here. These guys will be computing their fingers off making new apps...i am sure that we will not have to use the android market..im sure that people will make apps-> download to computer->use computer to put on our SD-> install to phone...
I like the threaded SMS - It's very smooth for me, kind of like a prettier IRC.
I give it 2 weeks max till it comes out if it isn't already on g1, threaded text is my favorite feature from 6.1.
questions using the g1 without 25$ plan
-if i buy a g1 in ebay and i dont want to pay the 25$ add. plan, i can use this phone with my tmobil plan?? only have to change the sim card?
-for request a phone now i have to select 35$ or 25$ addicional plan. when i have the phone i can cancel this 25$ or 35$ plan?
now i am using excalibur with 4.99 internet plan.
thanks
Negative. The data plan is required. It will be added to your account when you get the phone. It's tied to the G1.
Tmo said the same thing with the sidekicks. But after a while you were able to remove sidekick plan.
It may very well be. But the fact is that the data plan is part of buying the phone. If you make changes to the plan within the term of your new, two-year contract, you risk that early-termination fee deal.
For those who didn't re-up a contract for the phone, nobody knows just yet how it will work if you cancel the data plan.
This is like if you go to the AT&T wireless forums, 5000 questions a day about removing the iPhone plan (can't be done). Are there ways around it? We don't know yet. What we do know is, T-Mobile is making you keep the plan as long as you keep the phone, exactly like iPhone. If you can find a way to use it without the plan but still get unlimited data, do that.
technically, if Tmobile doesnt know you have the Dream, they cant make you purchase a package (unless I am missing something). If you leave your phone listed in the My Tmobile as a Dash, or whatever, the options available for that phone are shown and will not include the dream packages. If you buy the phone elsewhere, they wont know until you tell them.
Of course I have absolutely no idea why you would want a phone like this without data (and without text messaging, since they are likely tied) as it would be so crippled.
well t-mobile would know because i called them a day and they told me every phone i've used including the iphone. They said everytime you make a call from you cell they get info on what phone your using
interesting, because they only knew the last phone they sold me when I called them before. I have never bought a Dash from them, yet they allowed me to add tzones access to my "razr" and use it on the Dash for over a year before I upgraded to the full internet plan.
Same thing with my tilt... in fact I keep telling them that it's the wing and my.t-mobile.com never saves it. I think that if you have a t-mobile phone they can tell but if it's an att or even a CID/SIM unlocked phone (Correct me if I am wrong on the CID/SIM part) they can still see it but it doesn't match any of their phones so they don't know what it is.
wat if i have familt text messaging can i only pay 15 or 20 for data
Vendor and model/serial number are contained in the IMEI.
eg. 00|000000|111111|0
First 2 groups are TAC and stuff, third is UE serial, last is checksum bit.
IMEI and IMSI are sent to the network when the device attatches to a cell.
[edit]
Looked at the spec quickly (just happened to have Rel6 to hand, as you do)
Its in 22.016 if anyone is interested.
Composition of IMEI
The composition of the IMEI shall be such that each individual mobile station equipment can be separately identified.
Information is contained in the IMEI by which the PLMN, after requesting it, can immediately decide whether or not to accept calls made by means of this equipment.
Secondly, the IMEI shall directly or indirectly contain all information which is necessary for the network operator to make relations through its administrative system to trace the equipment to its origin of production. 3GPP TS 23.003 [2] describes the structure of the IMEI in detail
T-mobile can see every phone you use
Dabs is correct, every time that you make a call the network sees and logs the IMEI number on the phone. I work for T-mobile and when you pull up an account you can see every device that has ever been used on that account and the dates it was used.
T-mobile has traditionally not cared what kind of phone that you use, if you want to buy an unlocked smart phone and you can get internet access working on t-zones they don't care.
T-mobile knows that you are using a G1, the question is do they care. I can personally vouch for the fact that it will work on a blackberry data plan, I had my sim in one today and had full 3G service (averaging roughly 700kps over 3).
Regarding the sidekicks on t-mobile, the data plan is required (but can be removed) because of the way the sidekick stores data on the sidekick server. Sidekicks store the majority of their data on the server. The phone restores data off of the server after being turned off. If you do not have the sidekick data and remover the battery you lose all of the info, contacts, etc, except what is stored on the sim card.
Is it possible to downgrade the g1?
I've been thinking to get a g1 soon because now they will be a little cheaper because of the release of the mytouch 3g. I don't plan on getting the data plan because i dont need it. (please dont ask why)
I've read this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=452316) by JesusFreke on how to "How to register the G1 without a sim or data plan". It states you need RC29, RC30 modded version or any earlier version.
My question is lets say i have RC 33, can i download the update for RC28, rename it to update.zip and update my phone that way so i can register it through wifi?
I plan on getting the updates though http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=OTA_Updates.
Thanks
When you flash the rc29 image you would go into bootloader cam + power which looks for the .nbh file instead of update.zip.
so in simple terms, yes it will work?
I've updated my friends g1 with the official tmobile 1.5 update which i got on the web before them
so im guessing it will be the same process?
Yes it will work.
are you a t-mobile us costumer? Then you HAVE to get a data plan. I don't even think T-Mo will subsidize a G1 without it, so unless you're planning to get an unlocked one... Also, when you get it, and if you somehow manage to get it without a data plan, you still have to activate it, and guess what, that requires you to have a data connection. Lastly, if you do manage to get that (just use somebody's sim that has a g1 data plan), you're going to have to ask yourself, now what do I do with it? The phone, w/o a data plan, is only good for music, or phone calls, or pictures. No gmail, no market, no picture messaging, you might as well get a motorola
Now that's not entirely true... If you live around places where you are connected via WiFi most of the time, you won't even notice (I don't have a data plan so I know...) There are guides on how to register without SIM or data plan, and I got an unlocked G1 for $150, which is comparable to some of the deals on G1s with 2yr plan.
But he is right about the picture messaging, unless you have a data plan for that, you won't receive them. I have a 1MB plan with AT&T and just added their APN manually and I get picture messages no problem.
Wow $150? Man I got mine used for $250 locked. (I'm getting an unlock code though hopefully)
I also use my G1 w/o a data plan because I have Wifi everywhere I go. Yes, you can activate it over Wifi. I don't know about MMS/Text because I don't use them. Emails good enough for me
yeah, bought it off craigslist.
You can only activate over WiFi if you use the guide on how to do it, or if you use one of the ROMs with that feature built in... the default ROM will force you to activate using data (I added my APN for that). Texting works without problems, but MMS(aka Picture Messaging) requires data, WiFi will not work for it.
G1 w/ no data question.
I plan on buying a second hand G1 and rooting it and installing CyanogenMOD 4.0.1. I currently just have a HTC Juno (Shadow) with no data plan and I do not want to get one, is there a way I can disable data so I don't get charged? And do I have to change the APN to use MMS and or SMS with out a data plan? Thank you.
also, will T-mobile give me a unlock code if I didn't buy the G1 from them? (I am a subscriber for more than 90 days)
i have the same question.
thx 4 help.
Just disable the sync and your good to go. Also if u dont have data plan, they wont charge you because it will not work. Thats how Tmobile is anyways. FInally I dont think Tmobile will give you one, just go purchase off of the internet.
Ok, thanks. I didn't know if they would just start charging me per mb. And do you have to change the APN to get MMS with out data, cause I have unlimited messaging but I heard that MMS uses data on the G1?
Actually you have apps that go out and try to get updates and other info without you know, so just turning off sync won't work. There is an app on the market (can't remember the name) that stops all outgoing data.
Thx for the answers!
Could anyone tell us the name of this app?
If I remember right it's droid"something" or "something"droid, but of course without the "something"
And you will be charged if you don't have a data plan if you don't stop the data from going out.
here is the app!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=541380
its called " droid wall"
Yep that's it. I knew it was droid somthing.
First, T-mobile WILL give you an unlock code for a secondhand G1 if you're not delinquent and have been a customer for 90+ days. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. You have that "feature" every 90 days.
Second, T-mobile tracks G1s (and I'm sure MyTouch3Gs) by IMEI on their network, so they DO KNOW what phone you have. I think you can circumvent the need to buy a data plan, but more than likely you'll receive a "upgrade" message every time your phone tries to download some data. Could just be annoying, but if you're not using data, you might be able to get away with it.
That being said, why buy a smartphone if you're not going to use it as one? I can promise, you won't enjoy your phone to the fullest without data. Sorry.
Thank you everyone for your help.
I know it seems dumb to have a smart phone w/o data, but I don't really wanna pay t-mobile for it. And I can just use wi-fi most of the time.
Actually, I think that data is a waste of money. I survive and enjoy my android just fine without it. Most places that people visit and commute to everyday has access to WiFi(school,home,work,cafe,etc). There is no need to pay the double bill, unless the said places doesnt have wifi.
G1 and T-mobile Question
I think this is the best place for this question.
I have a G1 now and am considering moving over to the Nexus one. My wife and I are on the family plan and we want to keep that going. Currently she only had a basic phone with basic cell service. I have the basic cell service with the Data Plan added to my line. Her contract is up and she can get a new phone, which is good because her Motorola is getting flakey. Anyhow she wants to start doing text messaging with family. So she wants a new phone that has a full keyboard for texting. She doesn't need/want the data plan as it is $30/mo that she won't use. The problem is that all the phones with full keyboards require a data plan. She is a stay at home mom so if she needs the internet she get on a computer. So my thoughts were to get the new Nexus One for me @ $533 for the unsubsidized rate. I take my SIM out of my G1 put it in the N1. Move her sim from her Motorola over to my old G1 then turn on texting on the her line.
She wouldn't be paying for data and I could just set the G1 up to use our Wifi anyhow. Not that it would be used for anything but updating and installing new apps. So it should be fine. I could wipe the phone and set it up on her Gmail account before pulling my sim so I could then configure Wifi.
Does anyone see any flaws in my thinking? I have already put her sim in my G1 as a test and it could make a receive calls on her number. The one thing that I did notice is that it said it had 3G coverage but I didn't try it.
Thanks
Well I was out running around today and stopped into the local T-mobile shop to run these questions across them.
Basically they said that it should be fine. They would only be concerned if I were trying to disable the data plan on my account while still under contract. Since I will be maintaining my data plan for use on the Nexus there are no concern. He said that I may have issues when trying to set up the phone for Her. I mentioned I could wipe the phone and set it up on her Gmail account before moving my SIM. He said that once her SIM is in it may have and issue the first time it powers on. He said that worst case we could come down to the store and turn on the data plan for an hour or so and get it updated then they could turn it off.
He also mentioned that I may have problems accessing the App Market as they were told that it needs the data network to function. However he admitted that he can access the App Market just fine on his old G1 at home over his Wifi and no SIM Card. So he again thought that I would be OK. The only real issue that I can see is that I may not be able to get OTA updates. That shouldn't be a big deal because the phone is rooted and I am running a cooked ROM on it. We plan on leaving it that way and I will be doing updates in that manner.
So it looks like my questions are answered. I am posting the resolution as others may have the same question.
