Captivate & Mac OS X not mounting drives - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Forgive me for my Basic lack of understanding on this one.
I'm running os x snow leopard 10.6.4 and when i plug it in usb it starts up a mtp application and only allows me access to pics and as a dial up modem. I would like to be able to mount the disc's to transfer files back and forth. and also when i run doubletwist it tells me to use the drop down menu but when im using usb there is no drop down menu. so no mounting.???
any ideas what im doing wrong?

You need to go into settings, applications, usb settings, and change it to ask when connected. Then when you plug it in choose mass storage from the list of options that come up. Also, enable usb debugging while you're at it

the usb debugging was the kicker after! thanks for your help your suggestion works a treat!
-happy captivate user.

I feel like i'm going crazy here...
i have debugging enabled, i have my phone set to ask on connection.
i use osx 10.6.4.
there is no sign that i have a device detected on my mac.
the phone detects that it has been plugged in. (notifications)
i've gone to the notifications and selected mount.
i've used "adb devices" and get no results.
tried using double twist, nothing shows up.
my phone is still stock.
any help/ideas are appreciated!

Are you on a mac desktop? Mine would only recognize if I use a port on the back, not a port on the keyboard or the front of the machine....i think it's a power requirement thing. Try a different port and post the result.
Also try changing it from ask to being mountable instead and see if that changes things
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk

it's a macbook pro. i've toggled between the "ask on connection" and auto mount. i've selected to mount the drives from the notifications, all with not mac love. however, it seems to work with my windows box (using the usb on the back, not front). I would like to get it working on my macbook though as that is much more convenient (couch + tv and all). seems that mac + this phone is not officially supported? (no drivers from samsung anyway).
any tips/idea/suggestions are much appreciated.

This is what I did for my phone.
I put it on "ask when making a connection"
I always choose PC Internet.
I enable USB debugging.
Plug my phone in.
Then go to the USB notification and hit "mount drives"
Then it is on my desktop!
I am using the aluminum macbook.

thanks for the input. i'll have to try it again when i get home.
an interesting note:
when i attach it to my macbookpro and i have it on "ask" the phone will display the connected notification, but it will not ask.

I think when it is in USB debugging mode it will not work like that. But I always select that every time I can.
But having it to ask, it does not default to anything else. Not sure if it makes a difference or not, but I don't have problems putting anything on my SD card.

yeah, i'm totally not having any luck with this device on osx.
i have 2 usb ports. i've tried both. i think i've plugged in the phone with every different option... with/without secondary sd, debug on/off, mass storage ...
i even tried it in ubuntu running in vmware fusion.
i can confirm that it does work (it works on my work pc [windows 7]) and have decided that there may be one additional thing to try. i have the stock cord at work and i bought a backup from the local store. the connector on the micro-usb side might not let the port fully connect (it's a little fatter than the one Samsung sent with it). i don't know if that could really happen since it does charge and the phone thinks it's got a connection. but as of now seems my only hope.

Don't forget to exclude the storage drives from being indexed by Spotlight or you will get all those .filename files in every directory damn near it.....gah I hate Spotlight sometimes

OK. so, first i'd like to thank everyone for their input.
I have figured it all out. It is the #$%^&* backup cord I bought.
I took it to work where my stock samsung cord is (and the phone connects) and swapped out cords. I got the exact same result, phone notices that it is plugged in and begins to charge and allows me to select to mount the cards. The computer however doesn't recognize that a USB device was attached. So i took that damn blocky cord and pushed it in really hard and BAM-O! the drives show up and i get nice full access.
so, because of the recessed opening for the micro USB port on the phone combo'd with the blocky micro USB end of my cord I am not getting a complete connection. at least i have a back up charger. i only need to do my syncing/hacking at home.
I guess this post is a little premature, but i'm fairly positive that when i get home with the good cord all will be fine.
FYI: Don't get a "Retrak" cord from fred meyers.

For those still having trouble even after enabling USB debugging etc:
On my 2 week old 17" MBP, only one of the USB ports (the one closest to the power supply) will allow the phone to show up as mounted -- it's also the only port which will charge an ipad fwiw, so I suspect that it's a power requirement issue.
Bottom line: try all the USB ports on your machine.

usb issues with mac mounting and self eject
first my phone does not mount to my macbook like it used (since july) to with stock usb cord but still mounts to my imac (also with bootcamp xp2) and powerpc g4 all running the latest OS X
on imac, when i try to copy a folder from sd card to my mac the sd card will eject it self after starting coping files. it started with a system.img file from my rom backup files, now when i try to copy other folders even a jpg from DCIM will eject the sd card and external sd. (see attachement for error code) then the error message that the disk was not ejected properly. all happens with any random files, copying folders from mac to sd cards is fine
in xp2, the desktop windows freeze while coping is in process, then i need to disconnect the usb cord to get back to the desktop
i copied same folders from sd card to external sd on the phone itself and it works
update: now, only by selecting a file on external sd will unmount both sd cards!!! going to buy a replacement cord and see....

[Q] My N1 Would not Prompt to Mount SD Memory When I connect it to my PC

I needed to transfer some files from my N1 to my Pc, so I connected it to my PC using the cable. I was expecting the black mounting screen prompting me to mount the SD card, but nothing happened. I restarted my device twice, but the case is still the same. What could have been wrong? I have not installed any app within this time, not removed any. I have used it in just ordinary daily manner, messaging and calling and nothing else. My N1 runs on Froyo, OTA. No jailbreak.
Please help. Thank you
u need to assign a drive letter to your SD card
Noob answer: is it on the status pulldown bar?
Do you have USB Debugging enabled?
Does the phone recognise that it's been plugged in (ie start charging)?
Similar problem
I am having a similar problem with my N1 running CM6 stable. When I turn off USB debugging and plug the phone into my Win7 laptop, I get the USB connected screen, but when I turn on USB storage the SD drive doesn't mount i.e. I cannot see/access the drive in Windows 7. The N1 status bar says USB storage is on.
Under Device Manager, the N1 shows up as Android Phone-->Android ADB Interface with driver version 2.0.10.2 dated 11/08/2009.
Any help would be much appreciated.

No, THIS is exactly the problem, the phone dies not recognise that it has been connected to a computer. It does start charging, but no sign of SD memory mount/unmount. Nothing. Just simply charging.

No, USB debugging is not enabled. I double checked it.
I guess that Windows also doesn't recognize the phone as anything (Device Manager doesn't show anything new plugged in)?
In that case, enable USB Debugging, and see if the phone is recognized by Windows.
If it is - the problem is somewhere in SW.
If it isn't - then it might be a faulty USB cable or connector (from any side - phone or PC).
same thing happens to me from time to time. restart your computer and that should fix your problem.

[Q] New iMac weirdness...a story and some questions

The Story:
So I just upgraded my relic PowerMac G5 tower to one of the brand new 27-inch iMacs. My Captivate refuses to mount when plugged into any USB port on the back of the iMac. Yes, USB debugging is on. Yes, I pushed the button to mount the phone. The computer just refused to recognize it. The phone DID, however, start charging immediately. So it was pulling power, but not mounting at all.
Only major differences I could think of were the processor (G5 PowerPc to Intel Core i7), OS (Leopard to Snow Leopard), and that I'm using FileVault this time around. I did some searches to see if there were any known issues, but couldn't find any since the new iMacs came out a few weeks ago.
I know Adam Outler has been using his Captivate with Snow Leopard, so I tried turning off File Vault. Made no difference. I also tried plugging in my Nikon D3100 and my old iPod classic into the computer. The camera did not mount, but the iPod did. Luckily, the camera has a HDSD card, which plugs directly into the iMac. But I still couldn't get the phone to connect.
Just for a laugh, I plugged the phone into my ancient USB 1.0 hub. Damn thing mounted right up. WTF? I know USB 1 isn't going to cut it speedwise, so I got a USB 2.0 hub and tried it. Again, mounted like a champ. Ran adb reboot recovery from Windows (through Parallels), and it worked.
Turns out the camera just doesn't mount for any Macs (might explain why it didn't come with a USB cable). But the phone is still a mystery.
Question 1: Is this a power thing? Could it even be possible that my Captivate needs more power to mount than my iPod Classic (which has a hard drive, not flash memory)?
Question 2: Does anyone have any idea why this occurs? Is there some setting that I don't know about that controls what mounts and what doesn't?
Thanks for any thoughts on this,
kk
do u have the captivate drivers??? my mac hooks up my captivate all the time... i have teh 21 inch model tho not the 27 but yea drivers, usb debugging and device set to mass storage...
There are no drivers for Mac. I do have the proper drivers for PC (through parallels).
Yes, I have the phone set to both Mass Storage and USB debugging.
The weird thing is that I can mount the phone if I plug it into the USB hub...but NOT the USB ports ON the computer itself. If I plug in the phone to the computer directly and select Mount, neither the Mac nor PC side see it.
The trouble with the hub (USB 2) is it's SLOOOOWWWWW. I tried to copy my Titanium Backup folder to the Mac through the hub and it copies really slow then keeps cancelling out. Right now I'm transferring it via Bluetooth...and it's painfully freaking slow, too.
Anyone else have this problem? It's one of the brand new iMacs just released in May. It's killing me.
[solved] New iMac Weirdness
Figured it out.
Believe it or not, it's the cable (yes, the Samsung cable that came with the phone). I used the Motorola cable for my wife's Bravo and the computer recognized the phone right away.
My Samsung cable worked just fine with my G5 tower, but not the new iMac. I'm still wildly perplexed why it would mount through the 7-port USB hub, but not the computer itself.
Doesn't matter now, though. The Motorola cable works just fine.

[Q] Computer doesn't recognise Touchpad in USB Mass Storage Mode

This is kind of strange. I have a 32gb Touchpad and Win 7 32bit computer. Upon first use of the Touchpad, I followed the guide posted in the tweaks and tips section right away.
I updated to 3.0.2, turned off/down logging settings, installed Preware, installed all of the recommended patches, installed Uberkernal and Govnah, and OC'd to 1.5mhz.
I then went to load some media (songs, videos, ebooks etc.) onto the touchpad by connecting the usb cable to the Win 7 machine. The computer makes the found new hardware sound and the touchpad then asks if you want to put it into USB storage mode (which I did). The computer should then pop up with the window of the Touchpad drive and assign it a drive letter (just like any other usb mass storage device), but it doesn't. when I go into windows explorer, it shows a new drive letter has been added, but when I click on it to presumably see the contents of the Touchpad's drive, the computer does nothing. In fact, it even caused Windows Explorer to stop responding.
I almost positive this is a Novacom driver issue, but that doesn't make sence due to the fact that those drivers should (and were) loaded when installing Preware.
I am not sure how to resolve this. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be much appreciated. Regards, Dcartes-
I'm have a similar drive issue but it consist of the touchpad (I think), not recognizing when I disconnect the drive via the computer. This always results in that error message stating that I didn't safely remove it after I physically unplug it.

I'm not sure on the OP's question but as for the quoted response you need to go into my computer and right click the touchpads drive letter and then choose eject..
simply unplugging or using "safely remove hardware"will result in the error you are seeing
And if I connect TP via USB and then disconnect it w/o PC "eject" thing, then next time PC wont recognized TP in USB mode. And I have to restart TP to make it "recognizable" again
I go through all the normal, safe, and necessary steps but no matter what the tp always stays connected. I've even went so far as to shut my computer down completely with my tp still connected and it still stays in disk drive mode.

Thanks for the tip about the cable. I had the "Ouch That Hurt" message the other day after moving some pictures from my PC to the Touchpad and then ejecting the Touchpad. Ejection did not work. After the ejection process, the TP was no longer an option with either of the normal methods for ejection. So, my PC thought the TP had been ejected. But the TP did not think it had been. So, no option left but to turn off my PC or unplug the USB cable from the Touchpad to the PC.
However, I have noticed an issue with charging the Touchpad lately where I have to wiggle the cable where it connects to the Touchpad to get it to charge properly. Could be that this same flaky connection gave me a problem when trying to eject the TP after transferring the picture files? Though the pictures DID transfer properly. Will try a different cable next time. Hope I don't get a "wrong cable" message when doing that. Hate it when the TP does not eject properly as I fear I may be introducing file errors when that happens.

the only way to eject is from MyComputer > right click HPTP > eject.. or it will complain..not from the tray icon
ppl will bet that your prob is cable..
i went to national electronics store, they had phone section w/ many cables and phones plugged in..
i tried their cable to my HPTP and my cable to their phones...
cable was for sure bad.. they wanted 20$ for a 3' cable.. too much..
amzon wanted 4$ for set of 2 @ 10'..+ free s/h..
guess where i bought from..

[Solved] USB Mass Storage Mode Issues (CM7)

I am having issues with the activation of USB Mass Storage mode on CM7 v7.10. When I first connected my nook (just got it yesterday), I was able to enable mass storage mode as per normal. However, after this it's just stopped working!
There's nothing wrong with the cable afaics because the empty drives come up on the PC (Win7) no problem, it's just that the nook doesn't detect that the USB is plugged in and so never gives me the option to enable Mass Storage mode. I have had success once running ROM Manager's 'Fix Permissions' function, but since then it's not made any differences. The issue remains on multiple PCs with multiple cables.
Anyone got any fixes for this issue?
+ can you wiggle the micro-usb end a bit to see if anything better?
+ do you have the "usb debugging" check?
+ do you see the usb icon displayed on the NC notification bar?
- No wiggling makes any difference
- Tried with USB debugging on and off - no difference
- No USB icon (but empty drives still show up on my PC) so there is some kind of connection going on.
If the empty drives do show up on the PC, it definitely some sorts of connection made, it's a good sign.
Now back on your NC, go into Storage, try to Unmount then Remount the uSD and see if it gets any going.
Note: leave the Debugging USB Mode on.
Might also be worth considering moving from 7.1 to the MiRaGe 7.2 build. I'm not saying there is a specific fix but using the later ROM may help and I think most people find it more stable, faster and problem free.
Yeah, I actually updated to KANG 7.2 this avo and the USB Mass Storage option is back!
Thanks everyone for your suggestions!
I currently having KANG Mirage 7.2 with Tablet Tweak but it did not work. I bought an OTG cable from ebay so I assumed it's bc the OTG cable. The Drive works fine on my laptop but nothing appears on the Nook.
Maybe a re-flash with the same ROM might do the trick?
I'll try to reflash sometime soon!
Will post

I had the same issue. Have the USB connected and while connected reboot your device once it has rebooted you'll be able to access the USB files on your device. You'll be able to see the USB signal at the bottom, which you can activate. You'll have to do this most likely everytime you want to access USB storage

I'm on MIRAGE 7.2 running off EMMC. SD card is in the Nook.
I shut nook off, plugged in the cable to my pc and started the nook.
5 drives show up but I cannot access any of them. The USB icon is in the tray on the Nook and it says "USB connected". Just above that it says, "USB debugging connected"
Anybody have any success?
After doing some reading I've decided to use ES-FILE Explorer wirelessly. Its very easy to use. You need to SHARE folders on your PC in order for it to access the files.
Playing around with the USB option some more, I didn't realize that you could TOUCH the message in the notification bar. When you do, it launches a program and from there, you turn the USB connection on or off.
Geeeeeeez........ya learn something new every day.

Problem with OTG&USB N950F

Hi everyone
here I've got a terrible issue with my note 8 and SAMSUNG USB OTG.
When I connect my otg and a flash memory to phone, nothing happens, unless you force restart the phone while the otg is connected. After booting I can access to my flash memory but after removing the otg and reconnecting it, again nothing happens unless force restarting.
I've tried everything possible. Downgrading, upgrading, 4 files rom, pit file, rom from different zones, but still have the problem. I have no other issues regarding the USB port and charging, fast charging, connection to computer and any other stuff works fun but this OTG.
I wanted to know if anyone have any solutions for my problem or if anyone had the same issue or not.
it is also worth to mention that I have not rooted my phone due to warranty issues, and for that I haven't tested any kernels.
thanks for everyone

Nope, I have developer options enabled but debugging isn't on. never had to enable file transfer.
When I plug in the OTG device I see a usb icon in the notification panel. Swipe down and pick explore. Mind you it only opens in the stock file explorer, I did have another file explorer that picked it up too but can't think what it is and it has been lost myriad of other apps I test and play with...
Just be aware that it may take a few seconds to scan the device, depending on size, and then display the icon.

i know it sounds weird but from past experience flaky USB drives are more trouble than they are worth, from first hand experience i know patriot, corsair and sandisk work well as OTG drive
also you neglected to mention the file system the USB was formatted with, i believe only FAT, FAT32 and exFAT are supported

also possible that the phone doesn't like your OTG adapter. I bought a usb 2.0 to type C adapter which doesn't even work on the phone - when I plug it in usually the moisture sensor error comes up saying water is in the device and I should let it dry. Unplug the OTG and the error goes away.
So... I bought a USB 3.0 A to type C OTG adapter and that one works fine with everything I've tested (usb flash drives, keyboard, usb ethernet adapter, etc)
I believe the USB-C to USB-A adapter that came with the phone is actually an OTG adapter (tested xbox360 controller and keyboard)
I also believe that the note8 can host usb flash drive native (no need for OTG cable) as i have a dual head USB-C and USB-A flash drive which is recognized once the USB-C end is plugged in

Sorry to dredge up a semi old thread, but has anyone found a fix for this?
I'm having almost the same issue, I finally decided to try out the OTG adapter from the box and nothing works, it isn't even recognized. Tried ps4 controller, mouse, keyboard 2 different thumb drives. Can't figure out what the deals is.
Other than that pc connection seems to work and charging works fine. TIA
I'm having a similar problem. A month ago, used both OTG adapters (original from Samsung and a generic one) it detects my memory sticks as a hard-disk and was able to manage my files. But since a couple of weeks ago it does not detect them anymore. Is like it did not supply charger to them anymore. I have tried the USB debugging menu and no difference at all. Even I got back to factory reset expecting to solve the issues but nothing happened. The port as such is working perfectly because I'm able to charge through it. On the other hand, Samsung DEX is not working as well. It just charges the phone but never boot-up.
I'm just waiting for Oreo and hopes this will sort the problems out.

That sounds like a bodged port to me man
Is there any dust or dirt in there that you can see?
I really don't think Oreo's gonna fix that for you

Seems to be a little bit dusty. Anyway, the other thing is that, when the Usb is detected it ask to choose between transfer files, images, midi device and so on, even if I choose "transfer files" mode it always get stuck as "charge connected device".
Hi i have the same problem... my note 8 can connected mith my notebook, but my otg with an usb stick cant recognize my note8. I test the same otg with usb stick on my friends phone example S8 and it detects promptly all.
I hope the fixing take not long time. I waiting for help. Greets
Well, adding one more case here, my native file manager doesn't recognize any memory connected via the original otg conector, but, using x-plore file manager, problem solved, as I use x-plore since my symbian days, I never gave this issue much importance, this problem was present also with my note 7

TIA

This. I have exactly the same experience. I bought a couple of months ago a new Note 8, and finally decided to try the OTG adapter that came in the box. Nothing worked. I tried the adapter with a friends phone and it worked like magic (USB drives, mice, keyboards, controllers, etc.).
Would really apreaciate if anyone can provide help on this issue... Cheers!
