like... open, and start typing? Not "choose excel spreadsheet, powerpoint presentation, or fruit salad", nothing that asks if I want to save my documents when I quit, just like an app that opens a piece of scratch paper that I can jot down notes on.
Thanks in advance.

I like color note, free in the market.

3banana for the win
Ultimately I ended up with an app called "Noteeverything"
Personally I like the app "Stick memo widget" I can't seem to find it on the market anymore, but i have a backup of it. You just put the widget on your home screen and whenever you want to add something just click it and type. Lemme know if you're interested.
3banana and color note are exactly what I was looking for. I like that 3 banana can attach a photo, and that color note has integrated timer/alarm functionality.
I'll just need to use both for a day or two to decide. thanks all!

I'm working on my wife's and mother-in-law's NCs for Christmas. I don't want to replace the stock nook launcher, because both will be doing a lot of reading on the devices, and LauncherPro might make it a bit harder to use for the mother-in-law.
Is there an app that can launch just the app drawer from the notification tray? Since the stock nook launcher doesn't update new apps until you reboot, I thought that something sitting in the tray that could open all the apps on the device would be handy.
I've been looking all morning and was hoping that somebody here knows of something like that. Thanks!
Found something: in case anybody else has a need similar to mine, here is a two-app solution that I figured out.
App 1: Appicker. This app is sort of like an app drawer, it has some better features but it works just fine for launching apps.
App 2: Quick Launch. Quick launch is what makes the magic happen. It lets you set an app to launch with certain button presses. I went into the settings of this app and set Appicker to launch when I double click the home button.
Note: Appicker could be replaced by any other app launching app that you find that's better. I saw some others, like TaskOS, and I'm going to compare them all.
Let us know if you find a better solution. I'm outfitting a NC for a Christmas gift myself.
I went with adw launcher and configured it to open the app drawer with an upswipe.
Between that and the library tab being in the middle of the launcher I think my 80 yr old mom has it figured
Galaxy Tabs.....Worth every penny!!
the best way is to install soft keys...press the 'n' and have home set to soft keys.
then install your fav launcher and have the 'n' to always open that launcher.
wen you press the 'n' it will take you to the downloaded launcher but wen u press the soft keys home button it will take you to the original nook color home
this is wut I did for my moms nook color

SoftKeys is free, it works great. If you have some other need that it can't serve, post what it is. HTH.
With the atk app there is a widget you can place on the home screen that when pressed, instantly kills the active apps. The problem is, its kind of small and looks out of place with my theme, but I cant seem to find a way to change it. I'd like to be able to use a custom icon with desktop visualizer or something to be able to activate the widget's functions, but I can't figure it out.
ps, I don't want this to turn into a debate about whether or not to use a task killer, try to stay on topic.

You really don't need an app..... joking.
I've REALLY been wanting to know this as well. Likewise, it does not fit my theme or icons at all. It's the only out of place icon throughout all my homescreens.
I am also trying to do this, so I should probably add to the list of people and hopefully someone has a solution.
I'm using ADW and tried the custom shortcut but I can't find the activity that carries out what the widget does.
Any of the task manager activities just bring me into the app, rather than a direct autokill.
Also, I don't know if there is an android system activity for it, because I can't seem to find that either.
That's all I can contribute from my efforts anyway..
you'd have to do an adb decomile or winrar whatever then change the icon for the widget and resign the file. there are already versions floating around where people have done this already do some looking around...
Really? I've searched and came up with nothing, just back to here really, or other people asking the same thing..
If you had a link then that'd be handy, if not then thanks for the hint on a starting point..
I can change the icon for any application!

Yes,man!I already did different icons for widget actions!
I've done this before. All you need to do is rename the .apk to .zip and open it in your PC. Navigate to the icon image, replace with yours, rename the zip to apk push it to /system/app, fix permissions... dunsky.

I never thought of that, I'll do that now..
And while you're here, you might know..
since you can't put a widget in a dock bar, is there way to assign the same widget function to a desktop shortcut?
Similar to the activities in adw launcher..

Is there a tweak or setting I can adjust so the names of apps on my desktop shows its full name rather than a fading-cutoff?

Also wondering about this and the ability to maybe give a shortened name to an app on our homescreen.

Have you tried Go Launcher? It's similar to Launcher Pro, but it's free and you can rename applications on the home screens.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
With Launcher Pro you have to use SQLite Editor. There's a free one for Windows, but can't think of the name right now. Use Root Explorer to grab /data/data/com.fede.launcher/databases/launcher.db
In Favorites you'll find all the titles. Just rename, save and replace the file. Do a backup first in case anything goes wrong.
Launcher pro always asks if you want to use a custom name when adding to the desktop for me though I choose to hide them altogether.
Also, iirc bettercut and desktop visualizer can do this quite easily.

I open the app drawer and just press and hold the icon, and add it that way. I just tried the way you described, and it was really slow to load.
I guess depending on how lazy I am, will depend on which method I use.
@mistaken
I occasionally see the slow load time for app list on the first use though it is not nearly as bad as it used to be.

Facebook For Android is a piece of ****. I hate that people actually like it. The iPhone version is twenty times better....seems like the Android app was coded by an utter retard.
Flow is awesome: better even than iPhone official version of Facebook which - while good - suffers far more annoying bugs.
Through Flow you can set up push notifications easily through its gmail interception system. They work immediately and look brilliant. If you turn the popup on then when someone comments it shows their picture and what they said in a little window. You can scroll through multiple popups. notifies you for everything you have set up Facebook Emails to tell you about.
It supports loads of things that Facebook for Android doesn't support such as tagging, untagging, deleting posts, viewing 'likes', setting profile pictures and uploading whole albums from the gallery at full size. Not too keen on the icons on the main menu but the developer is working on it.
Also it doesn't keep you logged into chat 24/7 and drain your battery, nor does it link to the browser everytime you try and do anything. Only thing it doesn't support is inbox (owing to Facebook API I believe) but it does give push notifications of inbox messages and opens up the requisite page in the mobile site.
Flow for Facebook all the way - absolutely phenominal. Screw the official app.

Why would you want chat within the app? Its a piece of crap on iPhone too and drains battery like hell as it doesn't keep you logged in server side. You can download Beejive for Facebook for FREE. It not only keeps you logged in for as long as you choose to but its very reliable and uses c2dm so uses next to no battery.
Screw chat within the app.
For a great widget use Launcher Pro. Best Facebook widget I've seen.

IPhone Facebook app is a lot better than Facebook for Android but it still leaves a lot to be desired. Notifications are clunky and when you open up a push notification it doesn't refresh the notifications feed itself upon opening. Photo comments OFTEN don't show even though you've been sent a notification of one - often takes a number of restarts and refreshes to show them. Lots of other little bugs. Like I say, iPhone app IS better BUT just look on iTunes at reviews of the app to see that it is less than perfect!
Thanks, i just bought Flow for facebook and its great!
Flow is actually nice but the lack of a widget lets it down.
thanks everyone for responfding
i just installed flow and like it so far
gun bros
FLOW developer is working on a widget I believe.
The app now has an integrated quick reply feature so when your notification popup appears you can immediately respond to it without even leaving the screen you're in. Pretty brilliant I reckon and I've seen nothing like it on any other platform.
thanks for flow
I just updated the Nook app on my Xoom. In the updates list, it doesn't mention anything about magazines...however imagine my surprise when I opened the app and see my magazines in the list waiting for me to download them.
Works flawlessly! Screw Zinio for not releasing their app across all devices. I can finally renew my subscriptions via B&N.
Nice. I just updated on my Xoom as well, and didn't see this so I haven't even opened the app yet since my update. In the middle of a nandroid backup right now, but gonna check it out as soon as it is done! Thanks for the heads up!
Just updated as well. Magazines look great in landscape!
any chance you could post the apk?
They look great now, but the bad thing is that now I have to see full page advertisements. Blah.
This is awesome. I've been waiting for B&N magazines to be properly supported for a while. Great news!
looks like the update got rid of the force closes when hitting the back button to leave a book. I prefer nook over kindle app if nothing else for the page animations and smooth transition. Great update and finally get to use the nook app all the time!
My only wish now is that they will make a widget that shows some of the books you have downloaded so you can scroll through them, like the Youtube widget.
Very nice update, but epub book covers won't show up in the library. Anyone know of a way to fix this?
Can someone post the apk please?
This makes me really happy.
The new app looks great, seems they updated the user interface for tablets too finally
Too bad it doesn't support "read to me" books... still need the stock NookColor for that.
Thanks for posting this, tried zinio but I've been wishing for B&N to make mags available in their app for some time. btw is it just me or is the app a little sluggish?
anyone know the answer that that other guy's epub cover question? It doesnt seem to show covers on books you side load. I loaded the same books into my girlfriend's nook 3g and it shows the covers on that.

I could investigate if you post the apk. We can't get the app outside of the US
Hey guys,
so I got the apk by downloading it with Market Enabler on my phone and then transferring the apk to my WiFi XOOM. Wish that Market Enabler worked on WiFi :\
Anyways, here is the apk for other Non-US members
Also, as for the sideloading question, I also could not see sideloaded epubs on the home screen. However, when you search for them with the magnifying glass in the top right, the epubs show up.
Hope that helps!
Cheers

I have a 3g nook as well, and the covers do not show up. If you browse your library of purchased items, you will see in the bottom LCD screen the covers of the books that you can scroll through. For items that are sideloaded, it does not show the covers in the LCD portion of the screen.
I just installed the posted nook app, and when you first open the book, the cover of the book isn't displayed. If you swipe to go back a page, it'll display the cover. It seems by default, it skips the cover.
It would be awesome to have the ability to display covers on the bookshelf, but I think B&N intentionally made it so it wouldn't display it. Aldiko is able to display the covers in the bookshelf view.
