When I had my Aria, I could turn off the data connection but I cannot find the setting on the captivate.
Any ideas?

I would also love to know how to turn off the 3G data so I can be 100% positive that I'm not eating all of my monthly allotment when I think I'm on wifi
I use "APN on-off Widget" from the market. It's a simple 1x1 widget that allows you to enable and disable APN (data) connectivity with a single tap. It's color coded green/red for data on/off.
There are a few apps that can do this for you. Here is one of them: http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.DataOnOff
Neither seem to work. :/

Have you tried APNdroid or SMODA Widget?
Gonna try now

Download "network" app from the market place. Start the app, press menu, and press disable data. Works great for me. Would prefer an edge only option.
when by a wifi connection, can you just connect to the wifi connection to disable data?
When I first got my phone, came home, and connect to my wifi, it was showing the 3g icon next to the wifi icon for like a day and a half. Then for some reason, I had to power the phone completely off and back on again. So, now it just shows the wifi icon when I'm at home, and switches properly to 3g when I go out.
Been looking around for awhile (almost last two years!)
My favorite app/widget for controlling all sorts of things on the device (including data) is:
Extended Controls
Frigging AWESOME - not related to them or anything - just a fan of the app.
I use it and have TWO of their widgets full of controls on one screen!
This is my first post ever to a forum. So, hopefully this comes out ok.
Just picked up my Captivate yesterday and was trying to figure this out also. Found a post by someone, can't remember from where, to go Settings, Wireless and network, Mobile networks, Access Point Names and then add a bogus APN. I named mine OFF. Once you have a bogus APN then select it instead of the ATT WAP. Well, tried this and it didn't work, still had icon at top for mobile data and was transferring data. That is until I got to messing around trying out some the settings and I happen to activate Flight mode, still had bogus APN selected. Then once I turned Flight mode back off the icon was gone and no more data transfer from mobile network. Then when I wanted to turn mobile data back on just went back and selected ATT WAP and the icon popped back in and connected to mobile network.
Extended Controls offers an APN toggle that works very well, and it's not a bad looking widget either.
Undocumented Debug/Diagnostic Menus In Your Android Phone - I found this at: TechSupportAlert
From your Android phone, dial *#*#4636#*#* and then wait a couple of seconds. The testing menu will appear. To exit back to your normal phone, just press your back/exit button. If you're going to explore the various options on the testing menu, take care.
As for the method to turn off data, select the first option on the testing menu (phone information), then press your menu key. You'll see a selection of buttons, one of which says "disable data connection". Press it, and you're all done. To re-enable your data connection, go to the same menu, where you'll find that the name of the button is now "enable data connection".
I tried it on my GT-P1000 and it worked perfectly.
Just in case it helps?
If you are running stock FroYo there is a data connection in the power menu. Hold the power button, and press Data Network. It wasn't there in Eclair, but they added it in FroYo. If I remember right it will even remain disabled after a reboot. I can't test as my phones are no longer stock, but my wife once thought she broke her captivate because she accidentally toggled that.

Airplane mode and wifi?
Am I missing something in my quick review of this thread?
I am going to Europe and dont want any service at all except for wifi.
Cant I just enable airplane mode and then turn on the wifi? Or will those sneaky bastards at ATT find a way to still charge me for something?

Just leave your sim card out of the phone then there is no possible way to "sneak charges"...
wifi works with no sim. And you will get kick ass battery life without it.
I am in Venice now after a week in Paris and leaving the phone in airplane mode seems to be doing the trick. But let me just say, hotel wifi in Europe sucks! Its nothing like the states. You get a user name and a password and have to log in every single time. And only one user at a time. I need a wifi repeater or something to use my laptop, iPod, and phone as I want to.

so im leaving the country in a few hours and taking my G1 with me, been looking at solutions to effectively disable ALL mobile data, without affecting Voice. basically i'll be using a PPD SIM and dont want random data charges munching my minutes.... all sense roms have this option built in, but heres a few problems, 1.5 has no nav in maps, and i plan on using it over WIFI, 2.1 sense is just too batt hungry and unstable to possibly wind up lost in a foreign country where i speak 0 words of the native language.
from what ive read APNdroid doesn't quite do it.... is there any way as root i could effectively "break" the data connection?
or alternatively does anyone know of SoftBank in Japan offers ultd Data for PPD SIMs? if so how much? and any ideas weather i'll be able to get 3G or only EDGE with my T-mo Radio
try dialing *#*#4636#*#*
then "Phone information"
menu button
"More"
"Disable data connection"
Do the same to turn it back on.
id read about this fix as well, however it appears it doesnt hold across reboots, ima be here for a couple weeks, i need a more permanent solution...
is there no way to physically remove the drivers that control the mobile network via ADB or maybe pull it out of an update.zip before flashing?
I think the option below it is "disable on boot". You could try that.
change the APN settings, or get a program called quick settings from the market. either way is a quick fix.
the set on boot option will reset its self after the WiFi is cycled... and of course without data i'll be using wifi as much as possible.... so far APN droid has served me pretty well, however i've still cought glimpses of that 3G icon, so if anyone has any ideas im all ears
i remember some early Haykuro ports that had improper Radio drivers and had no data connection, so if anyone knows what files those would be thats really the key im looking for
bump/update
the only time i see it trying to pull data when the APN is disabled, auto sync is off, and bkgrnd data is off, is in one of 2 cases, immeadeatly after i cycle off wifi, i see the 3g icon for a split second, and sometimes when im in Market uninstalling something
ive come to the conclusion its probably easier to just leave WiFi on and not touch the market unless ive got a WiFi signal, but now its almost a matter of i know that theres got to be a way to do it (seeing as with Root, i should be able to "break" just about anything) and its eluding me....
if anyone has any clue as to what files control the data "drivers" or whatever, im sure i can take it from there, just need a push in the right direction (or directory, lol)
Go to APN under Networks and just delete all the APNs.
Alternatively you can make a new one with bogus information and select it.
... did you even read my post.... that was my first try, days ago...
I have a sprint galaxy tab I bought just to use with wifi, but I see cell bars on top and I dont want it using the cell radio at all since I wont ever be using it and need to conserve battery, anyway to shut off completely?
I cant do airplane mode because I need WiFi on
Take the SIM card out of it.
Otherwise turn packet data off & lock the radio to GSM only, uses very little power then.
3G no mas
I have/had the same issue. The other annoying aspect is that if you haven't activated the 3G, it attempts to FOREVER at every boot. I suggest Airplane mode. After you put the tab in Airplane mode, you can manually turn WiFi on, and not have to deal with the search for service you don't want taking up yer juice. That's at least what I did. I know there are other options for rooted tabs, but I'm too scurrrred to root mine...
This will do it.

Uhmm just turn airplane mode on, wiat 5 seconds, then turn wifi on. you're good to go.
some people don't get that the sprint GT is CDMA and don't have neither sim card nor APN.
I'm in the same situation, using the sprint GT as wifi-only in airplane mode.

I tried airplane mode before, but when it killed the wifi (as I expected), I started searching... I had searched all over for this simple procedure with no success until now.
I had recently purchased this Sprint tab under the description of being a wifi only. When I received it and saw that it was a Sprint, I did not care at first, since I live in Canada, until the battery started being drained very quickly in my poor cell reception basement because the CDMA phone could detect a weak cell signal. I know that any other CDMA phone I had would use all its power to latch onto a weak signal.
Thank you very much.
Airplane mode turn off the cellular radios. Sim cards have nothing to do with it. Both GSM and CDMA are affected by airplane mode the same way.
It will turn your device into a wifi tab.
I just select airplane mode then re-select wifi on. This shuts off the 3G but lets you surf wifi.
Sam
The problem with the Airplane Mode is that it also turns off Bluetooth. For some reason, unlike wifi Bluetooth can not be turned back on individually while airplane mode is selected. Any ideas anyone???
I FOUND THE ANSWER!!!!! EasySwitch Pro
This is a fabulous app that allows COMPLETE and SEPARATE control of your wireless radios.
EasySwitch Pro by SMARTDYNE
Uses a very simple and effective widget to switch settings.
Works great on Samsung Galaxy Tab!!!

I'm not on my tab at the moment so I will do it from memory. For the data issue, if you hold down power, you will see a selection above airplane mode about something to do with data. Turn that off. When I was playing around with it I'm the past, you need to have the radio on (not airplane mode) in order for the GPS to lock. You can also, In settings, enable network location in the location section.
To get rid of the activation nag, note the icon in the notifications bar. See what it looks like? I used root explorer, rooted of course, to navigate to /system/app. Scroll down slowly until you see an apk that has the same green circle with a check mark inside it. Enter rw mode with root explorer. Add .old to the end of the filename. Reboot. No more nag. If you delete it, you cannot update to gingerbread. It needs to be running to get the update. You can disable it later. You also lose all update functions in the about my galaxy tab section.
I use Widgetsoid2.x it allows me to go airplane, enable/disable 3G, wifi, GPS and more. Can get it in Market.

Sigh, you have it wrong. Turn on Airplane mode, go back into Settings and turn on WiFi and Bluetooth. Simple as that.
The ONLY way you can't turn on Bluetooth in Airplane mode is from the drop down slider thingy in Android. If you go into Settings, you can turn on Bluetooth in Airplane mode.
whats up?
Still wishin to kill cell-radio-app =) Any new ideas except the airplane mode?
ps:GPS and Bluetooth don't work in this mode..
I tried selecting airplane mode and then turning back on WiFi. However, Galaxy Tab is still trying to activate the Sprint account I do not have or want to get.

Im trying to make my tab use wifi only becuase i don't have t-mobile service anymore. Is there anyway to get it to stop saying "searching" all the time? I have factory reset my tab but unlike other devices, there is no initial setup so i can choose WIFI only. Anyone have any ideas?
I use;

then turn off the radio.
(also popped the sim out as I was getting occasional SIM Detached messages and reboots, so figured it was simpler to just take the SIM out and turn off the radio)

Just flash overcome! Then follow simple instructions to turn off radio.. I its really simple.
Edit:
(copy/pasted directly from Overcome tweaks guide)
"Turning the 3G-based Tab into a "Wi-Fi only" device (Disabling the GSM Radio!)
To disable the GSM Radio:
- Bring up your Phone/Dialer program
- Enter: *#*#4636#*#*
- Select Device Information
- Scroll to the bottom
- Tap the "Turn Off Radio"
This will disable all Cell/GSM/EDGE connections – should only be used for those who do not subscribe to a data/cell package. This will leave Bluetooth/Wi-Fi (I think) on so you can still connect Bluetooth devices etc., as opposed to switching to Airplane mode which turns everything off! "
Thanks team Overcome. I have done this on two tabs and this works perfectly. Hope it helps?

You can turn off the radio, use wifi and I believe it allows you to use bluetooth as well.
Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I wanted to offer an alternative solution for anybody still trying to find a persistent solution to creating a Wifi only Galaxy Tab. I use Llama to set up a start up event that turns Airplane mode on, waits 1 minute, and enables Wifi. It has worked well for me for the past several months. Here's the run down of my Llama configuration:
Event Name > Start Up
Conditions -
Phone reboot > After start up
Actions -
Toggle Airplane Mode > Airplane Mode On
Queue Another Event >
Event Name > WiFi On
Event delay > 1 minute
Actions -
Toggle WiFi > WiFi On
I hope this helps someone out.
Ok, I know that I can go to the settings -> network -> cellular data and turn it off.
What I found is that Google maps/OSMAnd will turn the cell data on when GPS turns on even if cell data setting is off. Although I found that OSMAnd in offline mode does not use more than few bytes of data (My prepaid PP account did not even budge 1 cent), but the issue is that it leaves that option turned on until I physically turn it off.
I tried using Droid wall and APNSwitch, but to no avail, data connection still shows up on my call log so data is definitely being used.
How can I make sure that it stays off and nothing can turn it back on unless I manually turn it on?
Thanks.
PS: I am currently using MIUI 1.10.28

There is no current way to do this as far as I know as I don't believe there is a tasker plugin for wifi calling. The only thing you could do is set up key presses in tasker so basically a macro to emulate what you want to do. I used this technique to set it up so when I connected to wifi, it would automatically detect that and switch the phone to CDMA only so the phone is not hanging on to a weaker LTE signal for no reason wasting battery. When wi-fi would drop it would go back and set it to LTE. It actually works fairly well and much better battery life especially since I have a repeater in my office.
Found a way!
This breaks ALL notifications from wifi calling but it doesn't break the functionality of calling itself. So when you're on wifi you just gotta trust that wifi calling is connected (or go into settings to see if it's on). Also it DOES break address confirmation but since this should only be a one time deal for most people you can just reenable the service when you need to confirm your address if you're adding a new network or simply want to re-confirm it. You also wont be able to turn the service on and off in settings, but since it's not a radio itself turning of wifi will kill any battery usage by wifi calling:
1. Get ROMtoolbox (I have the pro version so idk if it works on the free version)
2. Go into app manager
3. Find and open wifi calling (make sure its NOT the one from htc)(also dont just select it, make sure you go into the menu)
4. Go right to the advanced section
5. Select advanced freeze
6. Find the service "vowifiservice"
7. Click on it to disable it and agree to the promt
8. *optional* Reboot the phone or refresh the setting to clear any notifications currently showing
9.???
10. Profit
