The kernel can't be written because there's not enough boot partition space.
I found a similar problem (forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6779420), but the this solution did not help.
Command "fastboot flash zimage zImage" return error.
It is hoped that the problem can be corrected? Reducing the size of boot up such as it was in 2.1? Or maybe you can increase the size of the partition boot?
The fact that Russia is not valid warranty google and I can not fix your phone officially.

Try this:
In Fastboot USB, flash to Clockwork Recovery (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img). Once you're done with that, enter the recovery and go to the Partition menu and format the boot partition first (and the rest of them, except for SDCard). After that, flash any one of the FRF91 builds available here, such as CM6 RC1 or MCR.

unrelated, but I maybe able to help here
some observasions have been made with older G1 SPL's and newer 'larger' kernels, where they fail to boot, current theory is that for whatever reason the ramdisk actually overwrites the tail end of the kernel in memory. This is unproven, but is academic as the newer SPLs do not have the same issue and are superior in other respects.
In any case I don't belive that the issue you are having is the same, as you are getting a clear message that the boot.img write has failed.
This error could be due to failed nand, where the blocks in boot partition have failed and you have a reduced sized boot partition.

ok, so next option is to write the boot.img to recovery,

if that works then you will have to get to recovery with

not ideal, but if you can do a normal boot via a 'boot to recovery' you have no option
edit:
thinking about I have another option, but its a little bit more complicated
write a custom zImage to /boot
this kernel has its own mtd map, with a new partition where system normally starts ( or maybe cache or data ), and get it to load the ramdisk from that address
This assumes that the problem area is towards the end of boot partition
BUT, tbh , it seems like you have an actual hardware problem, it might be better to return it under warranty, less fun but better solution.

well, if we assume that your boot partition is 'broken', then we can use the recovery partition
i.e., instead of writing boot.img to boot, we write it to recovery

so instead of going into recovery you go into the ROM
if you do this, then you can only get to recovery with

fastboot boot <recovery.img>
but it is more useful to be able to boot the ROM any time than recovery.
the 'trick' with zImage would be a lot more complicated, but would allow you to keep recovery.img on the phone
Actually, I still need to work out if we can load the ramdisk from a separate source to the boot.img, for now useing recovery for boot.img is your best bet
I had similar problems and have concluded that it is due to bad mtd blocks in the boot partition.
I found the address of the bad blocks with the recovery.log from amon ra recovery. After trying to flash some custom kernels.
I currently have a ticket in with htc to send the phone in for repair. Hopefully they will get it fixed up.

basically it is using an idea I have been playing with on g1s

basically the idea is that we can 'grow' the boot partition, and shift system up
this should give you enough 'good' blocks to write a boot.img via a modified recovery, we then patch said boot.img to recognise the 'shift' in the partition layout
there are drawbacks
you will be unable to fastboot flash boot ( but you can't anyway )
you will be unable to fastboot flash system ( but you probably use recovery for that anyway )
one of your partitions will have to shrink by the amount you grow boot ( but its going to be small, so no great loss )
the advantage
you get to boot 'normally' and keep recovery

The point in which everything took a turn for the worst was while trying to update firmware via SD update method. At which point it just stayed on android boot screen.
Recovery was broken at this point
I successfully flashed an older CWM version, but that was useless for reflashing the latest Asus firmware.
I tried flashing stock recovery again and it appeared to succeed, but now when I try to boot to recovery, it just goes back to bootloop.
I'm trying to flash the US version now via fastboot I get bootloop again and I'm getting weird errors every time I try regarding filesize. (See below)
I tried flashing CROMbi as well and it went through the install process successfully, but that resulted in bootloop as well.
Tried flashing Asus US firmware again without success,
Kind of pissed that this all started when following the instructions on the Asus site to upgrade to their latest firmware via SD card.

fastboot -i 0x0b05 erase cache

and now I get a bootloader error on startup

The SD update is designed to work with the stock recovery. What made you think it would work with CWM?
The only successful recovery from a similar situation I remember is the following (and I'm quoting from memory here - it's too late here for me to find the thread, but it is somewhere here in this forum - search for it.
Download the stock recovery to your fastboot folder from here: http://droidbasement.com/db-blog/?p=3210
Also download the 10.26.1.18 firmware, unzip it once, put it on a microSD and insert into tablet.
Enter fastboot mode
Issue:

Note: You do not flash the recovery, you boot it!
The recovery should recognize the firmware on the microSD and start to flash it.
If that is successful, you would have stock recovery and firmware again.

The attempted SD update was done with custom recovery as I couldn't get stock recovery to work after the initial SD update with stock recovery.

That error message means that your internal sdcard is no t available to format. Erasing all partitions is a dangerous thing to do.
The only way you will get back to normal is to try and flash the stock asus rom now as that will recreate everything. I recommend you start with the 4.2.2 one - need to flash it over fastboot - I can't see anything else working as you have erased it all.....
Also you used 0x0b05 which is the code for the last generation of transformers..... You don't need it for the TF701 but not sure if that has caused additional grief now. Probably not but you never know .....
Yeah IO'm getting the same issue that I was having before. I tried both the 4.3 and 4.2 boot.img and the recommended recovery.img file. Each time I ran

Could the inability to flash or boot from stock recovery have anything to do with the CWM recovery protection?
Well after those attempts it's totally shot.
Now I can't even get to fastboot. Every reboot results in "Unrecoverable bootloader error..."
Files RMA. Returned.
Moral of story. Don't do anything on a Tegra device without previous documentation that doesn't have NVFlash available.

No, you cannot ad root to the image before flashing.
Best/easiest way to root is:
- Enable usb debugging and enable OEM UNLOCK in developer options
- Unlock the bootloader in fastboot with cmd command: fastboot oem unlock
- Flash the latest factory image in fastboot/bootloader mode. You have too flash the img`s seperately.
- Then flash or boot into TWRP and flash the latest superSU.zip and reboot
- Install BusyBox from Play and you`re all set.

Thank you, I apologize for not including this information earlier but I currently have an unlocked OEM (did that before I rooted the phone) but since the OTA will not install and frankly I have always been a fan of clean install over upgrade and patch, so decided to just go ahead and flash the latest image. But I figured this time to research and see if I can do some prep to make it go smoother and quicker.
Thank you for the steps but I do have one question about what you said. You say flash or boot into TWRP, since that is not installed by default images, that means grab it of the TWRP page, which I was looking at earlier, and then flash that so I can do SU. The default recovery doesn't allow you to flash the SU? I just hate too add too many unnecessary things if I can do it with what's there. Which brings me to the busybox, is it necessary and if so, for what exactly? I have never actually found myself face to face with it for anything.

Just place TWRP in the fastboot/platform-tools folder, reboot into fastboot and in cmd type : fastboot boot name-recovery.img. Now you can flash the superSU.zip and still keep stock recovery. You can`t flash custom files with the stock recovery no.

Hi,
We're getting mixed up with terminology here. The images are not AT root, but also are NOT rooted. These mean different things so I want to elaborate on that for you.
The android kernel is linux based, which means that the terminology and device structure are loaned from that technology. Root in linux terms, means the root of the device. This is if you imagine the file structure of a computer using directories, the very top-most directory in the structure that every other directory sits within, is called root.
So for example on a linux machine you will have the root directory:
/
Within root, you will have other directories such as:
/bin
/etc
/usr

So root is kind of like the C:\ drive on a Windows PC. Everything to do with the OS and User directories are within there.
Your Android device is the same, however, /bin, /etc (etc) are not at the root of the device. Now in order to access these root directories, you must have a superuser account (su) and the process for achieving this on android is called "rooting". If you succeed in this process, you have "rooted" or have "root" which is sort of incorrect and leads to confusion.
I know this isn't too related to your question, but I wanted to clarify it in case you weren't sure - based on the phrasing of your question.

The android kernel is linux based, which means that the terminology and device structure are loaned from that technology. Root in linux terms, means the root of the device. This is if you imagine the file structure of a computer using directories, the very top-most directory in the structure that every other directory sits within, is called root.

Understood, I have done that and my device is currently rooted. I was more looking into making an image that is already rooted, to borrow a term from Windows, slipstream the root functionality pre-flashing. I was told not going to happen, that's fine. Although when I had my HTC Evo 4G, I had pre-rooted images that I had created with the bloat removed and I was flashing them with root functionality out of the box, but that's another story, I guess Nexus 6 is a different animal and dealing with Lollipop probably more difficult than Gingerbread.

Right now mostly I am frustrated with the fact that the factory images provided by google will not flash right and keep *****ing about missing .sig files. I have tried flashing them individually by taking the root, system, recovery images out of the zip file and doing them individually as been suggested all over the place but no luck there there, keeps *****ing about the partitions instead, makes no sense. The bootloader and radio images go through without a hitch but the rest is just a mess.
Just to share, I am trying to flash the factory image that I mentioned in my original post, so I won't repost it. Here is what did so far to no avail, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated:
I issue the command adb reboot bootloader and it successful reboots the phone into the bootloader
Extracting the folder shamu-lmy47i containing the following files:

Ironically the SuperSU image flashes just fine and reboots the phone
I am frustrated by the fact that the system image update step fails and nothing out there explains why? I have even tried to extract each of those images from the zip file and flashing them individually using the fastboot flashall but getting the same error as well as other errors.
Can anyone lend an assist on this and help me figure out how to overcome that hurdle PLEASE?

I did provide everything step by step the only thing I didn't provide was the errors on the individual images that are within the update zip file. Which I suppose is my bad:

Okay, so I locked the bootloader, and unlocked it again. Successfully flashed. But I am geting the following message
"Erase successful, but not automatically formatting. File system type raw not supported"
I cant run the fastboot format (partition) command. I am on latest platform tools and latest factory image

Does your phone boot up? If so, I would check to see if your still getting good recognition from your pc. What does adb devices show when you enter that with your phone in transfer data mode?

Yes, the factory image gets flashed, but now everything seems to be on partition B as opposed to A. I believe everything was going to A when I first got the phone and did the unlock. ADB working fine, managed to root the phone. i enter ADB devices and shows serial. I can boot to fastboot. I wanted to see what would happen if I run fastboot flashing unlock again, and it said device is unlocked

Well, then I guess all is well for you again. Just FYI going forward, when you fastboot the factory image without the -w, it only flashes to your active slot, whereas, if you leave the -w, it'll flash to both slots, but wipe your device. This is why when I update the factory images every month without the -w, I manually change slots so I get a full flash to both slots. Many think this is overkill, however, I have never had any wonky problems for the last 2+ years with my P2XL, and now my P4XL by using this methodology :good:

Right, but the thing is I left the -w in the bat file. Even so it only flashed to b, saying device is locked. I think there is some internal issue going. Im the same guy who cant get the blackenedmod script to run properly lol

Any idea on the best way to completely wipe the internals and flash again? This would be easy with TWRP or custom recovery, but we've some time before that is made for Android10

Personally, I would factory reset from stock recovery, and then fastboot the factory image with the -w included. In essence, wiping everything twice :good:

Will attempt this, my attempt last night was to do factory reset within the settings (when phone is booted up) and then flashed with -w. But I will try again using the stock recovery. I even changed computers, this stuff is wonky sometimes

Interesting. Just a simple experiment if your willing. Go into your platform-tools, and just double click the flash-all.bat file and see if you get the same result, or if it even initializes

If you have done a factory reset, you also need to make sure you enable "oem unlocking" in Developer options and usb debugging before you do anything else. Flashing a factory stock image which includes the '-w' in your flash-all.bat file would come afterwards.
I am assuming you are not flashing any kernals on top? Check to make sure you are flashing the correct image, Nov and December had 3 different images each month.

No, this issue happens on stock kernel. And yes USB debugging and OEM Unlock both are checked. I believe the image is correct. US Unlocked Pixel from google store. file ends in 011

Sometimes it takes a while for the script to finish. You might no have been stuck per-se, but just not patient enough. December was a big update, so it takes a little longer.

How to install your system
The following guide assumes, you have setup adb and fastboot already (make sure to always use the latest version of the toolkit, otherwise you'll may get problems during flashing) - for that take a look into the internet. Also you should already downloaded the complete package from above!
Unlock the bootloader - a "how to" is here...
Download the oem binaries from here, make sure to use exactly that version!
Boot into the bootloader (hold "Volume up + Insert the USB cable" until led lights blue) and then update the oem partition:

Flash now the Lineage recovery partition as well as the dtbo partition (they are inside the img folder of the complete package):

Disable the verity checks for now, as your new recovery violates the Sony verity profiles of the Stock ROM:

Okay, you are now ready to boot the first time into the Lineage recovery, unplug the phone NOW!
To boot into recovery: Hold "Volume down + Power" until it vibrates...
You should now be booted into the recovery. We now clean any old data from Sonys Stock ROM - this is just to make sure you have a really clean install: Choose the "Factory reset" option.
The phone is now clean and ready to accept the new system. You now can either install just the OTA package and be done or flash every .img from the full package manually - the coice is yours. When you plan to flash the images manually, make sure to include boot, system, product, vendor, vbmeta_system, as these are normally part of the OTA update (I extracted the payload.bin to verify this!). For the latter approach you may orient yourself on my flashall.sh. I'll choose the simpler OTA-sideload approach for now.
Select "Apply update -> Apply from ADB" (now make sure the adb server runs as root - may use adb kill-server && sudo adb start-server to fix that) and execute (the OTA zip is inside the ota subdir):

Something went wrong - help!
(Step 7-8) When you now see a device corrupt error
Don't panic!
You messed up the verity disable step from before - try again.
Try to switch the current boot slot (get current fastboot getvar current-slot and set new fastboot --set-active=, you can choose between a and b) and retry disableing verity disable again!
When your device fails to boot too many times (and crashes) the current slot could also get marked as corrupt. To reset that counter you'll need to reflash the boot partition - to see what is going on, try fastboot getvar all and look out for something like a unbootable flag.
(Step 9) When you get Operation not permitted during flashing
This is commonly caused by relocking and then reunlocking the bootloader (yay - buggy firmware). You'll need to relock, restore (and boot) the device with Flashtool using Sonys original ROM and start from fresh.
(Step 10) When you get the kDownloadPayloadPubKeyVerificationError error
Well, that's caused by using an other recovery than the provided one, as I use my own private keys to sign the build the recovery must also know them. Using an other recovery than the one from
the img folder of the complete package will most likely not include them (and when they do - I am in big trouble), and therefore fail. But you are in luck: It seems that the recovery writes
the data to the currently inactive slot and then fails. You could simply switch the system slot like described above!
Want to install Magisk?
Install the Magisk zip like the OTA system update by using adb sideload [MAGISK_FILE_NAME].
Want to install OpenGApps?
Make sure to use the pico-variant, as the system partition is even with over-provisioning really small (as the installer extracts some more stuff on the first boot) - then install the OpenGApps zip like the OTA system update by using adb sideload [OPENGAPPS_FILE_NAME].

Hey,
as you guys may have already noted, I have stopped the active development phase for this LOS port a while ago. This was caused by me just not having enough time to do everything and additionally maintain a LOS port.
Today I'll upload the last maintenance build to the OTA server and mirrors. Of course I somehow included a little bug, which causes the system to complain about "an internal problem", which seem to be caused by some interaction with the OpenGApps package installer. Now, it is a feature. I'll may post one more update, if I figure this one out.
Nevertheless, I'll shut down the OTA service at 2022-06-01 (see https://status.simonmicro.de) and will then archive all project data. It was a great time to learn many (new/nasty) things about Android and how everything works. I have to say "thank you" to everyone, who supported me and was on board with this project.

hmm, i flashed everything according to the instructions, but the system still looks the same as Sjll's ROM and there is no updater in settings>system. anyone else getting this?
EDIT: nevermind, all is well, i was on the wrong slot.. : / wish we wouldn't have to deal with this, TWRP+lineage+one slot was perfect. this is not about the ROM though, it's awesome.

No serious: Did you follow the guide step-by-step or did you altered it in some way (maybe forgot to reboot after switching slots) - as it should normally flash both slots (when using ota), even when not you should be at least on the right slot after flashing?!

lol it's easy to know when the ROM in question is the only available aside from yours xd
seriously: i followed all the steps to the letter. flashed the SW binaries on both oem_a and oem_b. really everything.
i have a theory though. i originally flashed your ROM when 'side b' had previously been set active. if this persists across reboots - i really don't know, this whole 'dual ROM' concept is new to me - then there's your answer: the lineage install script probably has a command to use 'side a' for flashing. is completed successfully, but then i went ahead and booted the 'side b', which still had Sjll's ROM on it.

Well, I also tested my guide to the letter - and there i saw on my device screen that the ota flashed on both partitions. Did you also used my recovery? When you did: Lets see if others also have that problem... :angel:

OTA way did with 0 exit status (it sent files) but when I boot device it writes "Your device is corrupt. It can't be trusted and will not boot. Your device will be powered off in 5 seconds". How to fix?

I had the same problem yesterday with the same results. I struggled with it until morning. Eventually I downloaded the latest version of adb, flashed the stock rom again and started over. It was done in twenty minutes. Try the latest version of adb (I guess version 35 for Windows)

This indicates you tried to use the bootloader (which also has fastboot support) to flash the images. I made sure to write the guide the way that it states you should use the fastbootd service of the recovery. I have the dumb feeling that many more will go your way and fail. Damn it.

Is fine, as you just erased all data - this also kills the partion so it cant be mounted anymore (that's the errors). This is indeed intentional as the system is now forced to really start fresh!

Did you tried the help of my guide? When you failed that and your device rebooted too many times (or it just could not boot and crashed too many times) you'll need to reflash the boot partition to reset the counter (and therefore the failure message).

I can confirm that Opengapps pico can now be installed without a bootloop. I'm at work and I don't have adb. I installed them directly as an update from the sd card using recovery. Everything works fine.
Can we get OpenGapps Nano support?
I know that OpenGapps pico are supported, but most people use the nano package as it contains some functions that aren't possible to obtain in any other way
so is that possible?

As I already drastically over-provisioned the system partition, I guess it could be possible that the nano package already works: In that case try it for yourself! When it goes wrong you can just switch over to your slot used before flashing the bad OpenGApps zip. Please PN me about your result, so I could extend the guide!

Fixed it Just repeated the steps from the first one and used OTA on step 9. Thanks!
I am on 12.5.4.0 stock ROM. I am unable to overwrite the stock MIUI recovery. I always get the error message:
FAILED (Status read failed (Too many links))
The recovery image that i am using is a lineage OS 18.1 recovery image that i obtained from a Telegram group on a new lineage 18.1 ROM. I also tried a TWRP image by wzsx, with the same result.
I also tried disabling vbmeta with the command:
fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta\vbmeta_vd171--V12.5.3.0.RJOMIXM.img
Rewriting vbmeta struct at offset: 0

Previously i had flashed crDroid ROM with an SHRP recovery. I remember getting the same "Too many links" error that time too, but i have forgotten how i managed to flash SHRP that time.
I tried using SP FLash Tool , but here too i get an error message " Invalid scatter file name" or something like that for the scatter file in the 12.5.4.0 stock ROM. Then i tried MTK tool to create a scatter file for my Redmi Note 9 but this time i get an error saying it is unabke to read the ROM storage format. Can anyone please help?

Are you sure are not booting into MIUI after flashing? because MIUI installs back the default recovery.

Thanks to everybody who replied. But i am using the command "fastboot reboot recovery" after flashing the recovery. But you are right, i did realise that if you just reboot to a stock ROM it reinstalls the stock recovery. Mea Culpa. But i wish this was explained someplace like a general explainer to a newbie.
Anyway, i downloaded the "Platform tools SDK" and used that fastboot and it now installs SHRP and Lineaage OS 18.1 recovery. But TWRP is still a problem. But at least i can install any custom ROM that i want. And yes, thanks VD171, i won't forget to use your patched boot image from now on.
