The official Twitter app used to come with a custom notification sound file called Tweeters. Though on my recent installs of the Twitter app the sound file is not present in my memory card or in the app. I believe Twitter may have taken out the sound. Does anyone have this notification file still, if so I'd love to have it. It was very useful.

On the original stock Android version there was an option to use an mp3 or wav file as a ring tone, contacts tone or notifications tone.
In ICS the notifications option is no longer there.
Any ideas how to do this?
I have seen on the OS folder where the tones are stored but have not unlocked/rooted yet so cant paste to that folder.
Go to you music folder long press the song and set as ringtone.

As mentioned, I have no problem setting the phone or contact ring tone.
It's the custom notifications tone that I cant set since upgrading to ICS.

Make a new folder under your sd card called media if there not one already.Should be media/audio then a notifications folder and a ringtones folder.Put your ringtones and notifications here. Then you can set anything in these folder as ringtone or notification.I use astro file manager to access the folders on my phone but you can do it connected to your pc as well.
You may even try astro file manager to access the folder you say you can't get to.Works on mine using ICS.

Many thanks. There was a folder on the SD card called notifications. I put the tone in there and then could access it from the SMS settings. I used ES File Explorer.
This is driving me mad. Brand new 64GB Nexus 6 running stock 5.1 (47D). All notifications are working fine (Gmail, Fenix, various news apps) except for Facebook where I'm getting notifications but no accompanying sound (whatever ringtone I assign in the Facebook app settings). If I turn on vibrate in the FB notification settings then I get the vibrate - it's just the sound that's not happening.
I've deleted the FB app cache; I've even completely uninstalled it and reinstalled it. Checked all settings and they are identical to my GF's on her 32GB Nexus 6 and she does get sound with FB notifications.
Not sure what to try next.
I'm having the same problem. No matter what sound I choose, it won't work. Only vibrates. I have even reset my phone and it still doesn't work. I have a Nexus 6, stock, running marshmallow, no root. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks!
Issue might be because of facebook notification sound is very short(damn ascending volume) and also for some reason Facebook itself is the issue(adding more delay to ascending volume or something else). For myself I let lightflow take care of notification sounds which some apps are acting like facebook.
I've been having problems with my notification (and alarm) sounds not coming through. I've got the latest t-mobile stock ROM. Somehow i stumbled across the potential problem. I just found the culprit today, so i don't have a work around yet, but hoping that others will find one. Or I'll post if i get a resolution.
I was missing texts because the phone would not utter a noise when i got one. I checked the volumes and they were all up. Reboots usually fixed it. Somehow (i forget why) I started suspecting my Youmail app. I uninstalled and rebooted. I'm good. then installed it again. still good. I listened to a VM on Youmail app. Then checked notifications and they didn't work. To test, I'd open SMS app (stock) and try to change the notification sound. It would fail (silent) as i tried to preview sounds. But opening the files in the music app or ES explorer would allow them to play.
Reboot would fix the problem. But as soon as i listened to a VM on YouMail app, the notifications would not play in the selection screen for text messages (or in the event of an incoming text). Volumes were still all up.
My current work around is this: after listening to a VM, I bring up the task switcher (double tap home) and swipe away YouMail (effectively terminating the app). That works if you remember to do it. I've sent YouMail a detailed explanation through their online help service. I will update here if i get a response or find closure on this issue.

SOLUTION
They updated the app on 8/28/2015. This seems to have fixed the problem.
I know there were a lot of threads about not being able to change the notification sound in different apps... but none was talking about FB.
(BTW email notifications work although finding where to change it was a pain in the ...)
It drive me bananas since I see that in the app the push notification sound is the 'Facebook' tune one but on every notification I get the default phone notification sound...
Anyone solved it?
When trying to set notification sound from Facebook Messenger app, I get access only to sounds provided by the app and not also to the Android system sounds, so I cannot set the default sound I chose from phone settings.

I don't think you can change it to anything other than what the app provides
