Has Enomther 'Changed the game'? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Let's be honest, while Enom's 2.1 version of the Official Nexus ROM had a loyal userbase, Cyanogenmod was FAR more popular. Whether this reflected the quality and functionality of either ROM is a matter of opinion. I believe both ROMs were equally capable, yet the frequency of Cyanogenmod updates appealed to the ROM flashing junkie, of which there are many on this forum. Not discounting the updates, I believe most users would see little difference in each incremental ROM apart from any major bugfixes, some of which were inadvertently caused by the updates themselves. Regardless, Cyanogenmod was the first port of call for many noob ROM flashers on the N1 Android Development forum, many of whom wouldn't even consider trying Enom's ROM.
Roll on Froyo....
Let's be honest, Froyo development has been slower than we expected. Many users, myself included, came in to the Nexus scene a couple of months after release and therefore a couple of months after development had started. This led to there being a multitude of ROMs available to flash and frequent updates to appease the junkies. Don't get me wrong, there are numerous Froyo packages available to flash but they have been mainly based of MCR ROMs (Thanks Paul!!) based on the official Froyo image i.e. not AOSP. Many of the Cyanogenmod faithful have gravitated towards bundles such as Rodriguez, K-o-R and LeoFroyo. The Cyanogenmod team finally released their CM6 RC1 a fortnight ago and while packing some awesome features, has also included the bugs you would expect in a 'release candidate' version. Then Enom drops his Froyo version of the Official Nexus; which while slightly buggy on its first release has been updated twice (fixing the bugs) while CM, excluding the nightly builds, has remained at RC1.
Now as a user who checks the forum daily, I've never seen Enom's thread so active! Including Trackball Alert features before Lil Hermit updated his app (which you must donate to have the same functionality) and including a pre-themed version (Bundles anyone?) seems to have attracted many users who never caught sight of the 2.1 ROM thread. I've seen numerous comments where people are talking of being 'converted' from CM and basically showing love for what was always an awesome ROM.
A long winded post as always, but my questions are as follows:
Will Enom's TheOfficialNexus now become the most popular ROM in the N1 section?
Or will everyone migrate as soon as CM6 Final is released?
Were you a CM user who has now been 'converted'?
Discuss!
As always..... Regards.....

Interesting thread. I'm a believer in joint efforts, so I won't drift into the competition area, but I'll offer my point of view.
On Eclair, the base system was left lacking A LOT of what it could deliver, from partial RAM usage through being locked to ROM for app storage to bad power efficiency to trackball colors etc. Cyanogen's builds delivered all that in a good package. I never thought of trying another ROM.
On Froyo, the base system is MUCH better, and many more find it better than custom ROMs than it was with Eclair. I don't remember seeing "Ok, all I want is a stock rooted Froyo, how do I do it" threads, which were present in some quantity lately - and it might be an indication of just how good stock Froyo is. Most of the modifications are cosmetic, like in the packages based off FRF91, which are most current ROMs.
But for some, the base Froyo still lacks things - for me it was the modified MMS app (I don't like Handcent, tried it, stock is better IMO), which I could just push, and browser mods - having the ability to change UA without entering "about:debug", which I had to do myself if I wanted it, since nobody else did. I'm disappointed in Froyo's Apps2SD method, So I wanted something else - and no ROM offers integration of other Apps2SD capability in Froyo's framework until now, only the symlinks method. So I wanted mostly base Froyo, but with modifications - and that's exactly what brought me to Enomther's ROM. It is a great ROM with some small bugs that I can live with and all the features I wanted, so I ended up using it.

I'm currently running CM6 RC1, I absolutely love it. I've also ran MCRs Froyo, and I like CM better, I've been debating on trying out Enoms. I've seen many a good comment about his 2.1 ROMs, but I wasn't rooted then. I'm going to give it some time to get a good feel for the ROMs and see if I find any unexpected bugs... eventually I'm going to try out Enoms ROM and see which I like out of all 3 (of the major players at least). It's not a matter of how much a developer updates, but how the ROM functions as a whole and what the bugs are. I think it's great we have such great devs for the Nexus and for Android in general. It appears for the Android community believes in quality over quantity.

I ran CM 5.0.8
It was okay.
Enter Froyo.
CM wasn't available, so I ran asimrom (based off of MCR)
when cm6 came out, I flashed it.
Hated it, went back to asimrom.
Right now, I am in a testing phase of enom's ROM
(I have literally had it for 12 hours, and for 8 of those I was sleeping)
and so far, i must say it is better than CM.

I have been running theofficial nexus rom since this morning and I have to say i am hooked. I just came from mcr r21. Tried cm6 but was too beta quality for my tastes. Just lacked some features I was used to having from a finished rom. Up until mcr r21 I was using cm5 roms. I have always enjoyed cm roms and may go back once cm6 is released but I am truly enjoying enom's rom right now. It has pretty much the same features I liked in cm5 but froyo'd and it is fast. I like vanilla roms personally, you can keep Sense.
Enom's is an awesome rom. Is it a game changer? It surely could be. I would suggest people try it. I like it as much or more than any other rom I have tried and I have tried many on a few different devices.

I like Enom's ROM because you don't need to buy Trackball Alert Pro to use it.
It basically has all of the Trackball Alert Pro features for free in his SpareParts! You can't beat that!

dependant on a Cyanogen rom???

before the stones start getting thrown, im new to the android world but no the xda one. im using the search functions, im reading my a-z guides... but one thing that keeps coming up over and over with some modifcations is the dependance of a Cyanogen rom.
i do not yet understand why? is there something added to his roms that differ from everyone elses?
examples the 720p recording specifices his rom, some of the overclocking requires his roms...
who knows, maybe its something simple and at the time the tutorials were written he was just the only rom in town, and now that others are out, the steps just havent been updated?
anyone willing to shed a lil light on the subject?
He and his team are behind MANY updates to stock Android. A LOT of features are added. Some of the updates require those features, and some were just integrated.
This was more true in 2.1 days, less true now.
When I had the myTouch his roms were THE roms to use (for me). They were the fastest and most stable of the ones that I tried. I tried a few others but ended coming back to his every time. He seems to emphasize speed and reliability over whiz bang stuff you can't always use.
He backported a lot of the eclair features into donut and later got a very nice build of eclair running for the myTouch. I'll be trying out his N1 build of the 6.0 series when it goes release for sure.

[Q] A few questions from a newbie on the fence on what to flash.

So after 2 awful years with a first gen Blackberry storm I decided to make the jump to android with the captivate. Originally I was holding out for the Nexus S as I really wanted a vanilla Android experience (I have a deep hatred for bloatware) but unfortunately around where I live it appears Verizon and AT&T are the only ways to go if you want any sort of decent coverage.
Anyways, I've been doing a bunch of research and watching videos the past week I've decided to flash either Perception (build 8) or Cognition (probably 2.3b6) and am leaning towards P8 as of now. I am wondering how much of these ROMs is vanilla android.
I realize from what I've read/watch that the touchwiz launcher is removed in both of these roms as well as the AT&T bloatware, but is much of the other base applications such as mail, media player, etc is still the samsung apps?
Basically, I'm wondering how close to vanilla android will the launcher/interface be with one of these Roms (obviously the roms include some additional apps, I guess I mean just the basic functionality/interface).
Also, is there a major difference between running a rom such as Perception or Cog opposed to simply unlocking/lag fixing and removing bloatware as far as general speed and lag. I know these roms are using leaked Froyo firmware opposed to the stock eclair I would have if I did not flash, but I'm curious how big of a leap in performance it is.
Thanks for the responses, hopefully my questions make sense, my captivates not coming till Monday (bought it through Amazon wireless) and I've been reading random android forums seemingly nonstop.

I always click thanks button before quote button now! Oh well.
I know cognition has twlauncher, not sure about perception (I don't remember..)
All custom ROMs have bloatware removed at your convenience. I'd say froyo is definitely faster. Either voodoo lagfix from xcal's kernel or lagfix from SetiroN's kernel gives a big performance increase. Cognition is based on a captivate rom whereas perception is based on an i9000 ROM.
No ROMs right now provide complete vanilla experience. I believe I read it somewhere that the Galaxy S line devices use rfs loops whereas usual android uses ext and this causes a problem for devs to port over vanilla android or other skins like HTC Sense. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong?) As of currently all the stable ROMs are based on froyo leaks with captivate, vibrant, or i9000.
I've tried many variations with stock roms, rooted, lag fixed etc. I currently use the cognition rom, latest one. It is much faster and better than the stock. It has voodoo lagfix built in. I haven't tried p8, because I like the cognition so well. I definately recommend giving cognition a try. I was also going to try Axura, but haven't for the same reason.

Try Assonance or Axura. IMO they're more vanilla than Cognition or Perception.
Thanks for all the info all.
Honestly I haven't even looked into assonance or axura, are they as stable as Cog/Perception?
quarlow, when you say you use the latest version of Cog do you mean b6 or b7? I know b7 just came out a day or two ago. I'd stick with the non-oc versions, seems like they tend to have alot less issues from what I've read.
My bad, I'm using b6, I didn't know there was already another version. Yeah ... I don't do the oc thing. I have a hard enough time between charges without adding oc. It really is screaming fast already.

I haven't really tried Cognition or Perception, but I've tried both Axura and Assonance and both ROMs seemed really stable.
ah jeez, now that I've been looking into it, I think I'm gonna go with assonance. Seems like its alot more stable than either Cog/Perception from what people are saying.
Just curious though, how fast/smooth does it run? Compared to stock and/or Cog/Perception?
Axura gets my vote
Stable and fast without needing to overclock
Need to use google voice for vm notifications though

All 2.2 Roms are smooth and fast compared to stock. Assonance will be your most vanilla (least amount of Samsung apps). Auxura is heavily themed and no where near vanilla. Plus it's based off of leaked Vibrant and I'm not a big fan (though I'm definitely in the minority here). Personal favorite is di11igaf's Rom. It is also heavily themed, but all themes can be changed and it works the best as far as functionality (my opinion, of course).

I'll second this. di11igaf's ROM is the most stable and fastest I've used. It might not be "vanilla" since it is themed, but the dark theme on it is so nice. You'll like it. I've flashed this for friends at work and they all love it and they have no more forced close issues, whereas they complained frequently about FCs with Cognition.
If you don't mind beta software, CyanogenMod is the best. It's actually built from AOSP code, with only Samsung drivers. All the other custom roms are just modified versions of the stock rom/leaked rom.
I run perception 8 with gingerbread theme and vanilla apps injected in place of sammy ones... so I kinda feel like im running gingerbread

[Q] If Enom 2.14.4 is it, what's next for you?

Guys,
I'm a stability freak, kind of the opposite end of the planet from the CM7 nightly guys I suppose... I love the extra features that are in some ROMs, but Enom's ROM has lots of nice features and is rock solid stable.
But as we all know, he has taken personal leave of Android since December and maybe he'll come back, maybe he won't...
So for you all who want a stable ROM similar to Enom, what are you considering, or what have you already tried? I'm hoping CM7 gets stable and released in the next bit and I'll perhaps move to it, but I really don't want to leave Enom. However I've heard Gingerbread is a bit faster, better storage efficiency, plus fixes, etc..
I'd create a poll, but there's too many ROMs to really put in there I suppose and I'd inevitably leave one or two out, so I won't.
Really never had a problem with CM7. It never reboots and I always get my calls/messages. What do you need more stability from.
You could always try the stock rooted rom plus whatever extras you need.
I am currently using Geo's stock GB ROM. It is running pretty good. DT A2SD seems to screw with the phone volume. (Not sure how or why, but I tested this extensively over the last 2 hours and it definitely does something to it.) Battery life is a little bit lacking. Perhaps a better kernel will help that out. The only thing that is really needed is trackball wake/unlock. I hope someone can fix the code for GB soon. I never really cared for FM radio, so no loss there for me. Aside from the lack of Enom's spare parts, I am happy with it.
lets hope enom comes back to us (greedily ).. i think were all in agreeance when i say he has his priorities straight... all the best to enom..
aside from that, i enjoyed leos roms shortly after froyo was released. i think he was on personal leave as well just recently.. his spare parts reminded me of enoms as far as options. even though he doesnt have the 'hardware skills' necessary, id love to see more from leo..

Very happy with the speed & stability of Geo's GB rom!
CM7 RC1 running VERY well for me. No wonks, great battery.. stable and fast
Yes I am missing enomthers latest touch for the gingerbread ota. But family comes first. Right now I am using dsixda gingerbread rom with root, deodexe, dt's apps2sd, busybox. So far it is running good. Was on geo114m's gingerbread for a little while.
What I miss about enomthers rom is the ability to uninstall programs that you are not going to use. Now I have to semi cook a rom taking out the stuff I don't want. Only thing all of these ota gbs are missing is the trackball wake and alert. Might go back to the latest enomther until that happens.

I'm coming from Enom's ROM. I took the plunge and installed a couple of nightlies, and then CM7RC1.
I deeply regret it.
Even Dewonkifier didn't help me. Today my mic went silent and I had to reboot to regain it. I can't count the calls I've missed in the last week.
I don't like having to recompile it to build battery percentage.
Gingerbread completely sucks when it comes to launchers (or should I say it the other way around - all the launchers completely suck under Gingerbread). No launcher has been optimized to work with more than 5 screens - and that includes Go-EX / ADW / LP. They suck so badly I can't stand it. Nexus S has it the same way for almost 2 months - and it hasn't been fixed yet. I don't have high hopes of somebody fixing it too soon, until more devices with GB appear.
The only reason I'm keeping CM7 at this point is because I want to correct its RTL language support - it annoys me (specifically when mixing RTL and LTR languages, and more specifically - in punctuation). Plus, I hope to make it distinguish between LTR and RTL strings using a bit better algorithm than the "any RTL symbols in the string? => RTL string" current one. And make it adjustable under CM menus.
This week/weekend I hope to find enough time for it, test it, hopefully submit it (if I get a better solution than the current one), and I'm seriously considering going back to Enom's ROM, at least until one of the launchers gets GB-compatible and CM7 will be merged with GRI40 source and gets rid of the wonks. Never had this SMS bug for a year, don't think it'll bother me in another couple of months. And I don't use Copy-Paste nearly enough to justify GB sweetness. I'll really miss the screen animation...
Thank you very much kind sir.

This may actually be my first post here on XDA after countless hours of reading, installing, testing, tweaking and starting all over with my N1.
Your post title says it all. When Enomther called it quits, I figured my N1 had reached it's zenith and would live out it's days rocking The Official 2.14.4. This ROM does it all: Fast, many kernels available to play with, feature-rich, STABLE, did I mention fast?
Out of curiosity regarding the sheer number of threads, I just had to try an MIUI ROM. Tried the stock set-up from miui-dev.com. While I thought the graphics and integrated feature set was great, it was very buggy. Lots of little things just did not work as they should have.
I was not interested in CM7 as bloat seems to have sapped away speed over the last several months.
However, I have run the Gingerbread custom set-up put together by Geo411m and it rocks! Very stable so far, good battery life with the stock kernel, everything works like it should and the performance is excellent. Menus are snappy, web pages scroll smoothly...there are very few issues and I am thrilled that the N1s have a new lease on life.
Only two gripes about Gingerbread so far:
1) No Trackball unlock
2) No power widget integrated into the pull down - I LOVED this feature for toggling system states.
Other than those minor issues that I am sure will be addressed in future ROMs, I am thrilled with GB. Now if only Enomther would weave his magic once again...
Thanks to the great community that makes these phones so fun and powerful!

I'm with the TS when he says that he needs stability. CM7 up until RC1 was just not cutting it, too many wonks and quarks. I put CM7 RC1 on my N1 and it works, but I ended up back on Kang - o - rama's version of cm6.1. Now that I've seen Kangorama release a version with CM7, I may give that a shot.
One of my biggest concerns is memory. If I don't need the stock launcher or ADW, then I don't want to waste the memory there. Kang o rama really works that out with its advanced installer.
For now though, I'm more than happy with Kang o rama. My N1, my gf's N1, and my roommates N1 all are running it and are VERY pleased.
So not surprisingly overwhelming CM7 responses.. So maybe I'll try that as well, but I'm still going to wait until CM7 is released and the "wonky" stuff is fixed.
It's funny how some of us are having polar opposite experiences with CM7 RC1. Really good for some and totally lousy for others
I guess it depends on the usage, and on the level of stability required from the ROM...
I think if I was used to rebooting my phone once in a couple of days - I wouldn't notice some of the problems. If I wasn't used to having 7 screens filled with widgets and icons - I wouldn't complain about the launchers and GB. If I had a lot of calls - possibly I wouldn't have the phone idle for enough time to wonk out. Some uses make the problems more visible.

I've found it to be extremely stable and even better battery life than Enom's. I've also seen an improvement in bluetooth connectivity.
I miss most the status bar power control widget, better trackball notification and the flexibility of his spareparts mod.

these are the exact two features I'm missing from the GB roms out there. I tried Geos GB rom and after a few hours I couldn't deal without having these features.

[Q] What do you gain from gingerbread?

I am currently running CM7 but I miss a lot of the custom themes from the devs. Also my battery life was better on the custom froyo builds. I do not see a large difference between froyo and gingerbread per say. There are no apps that require 2.3, at least that I am aware of and no major (there are some CM features that are nice) features that I see different.
So my question to everyone here is, Why gingerbread? What is special about it that would make it something to keep over the nicely tweaked and themed froyo builds? Is there behind the scene stuff that I am missing?
Honestly the main reason I flashed gingerbread was the lockscreen shut off and turn on animations hahaha. Some of the features on CM7 are very nice indeed, but I also feel like there isn't much that differs it from the froyo roms we have, apart from the ASOP experience. I already miss some of the useful features of the galaxy apps like the contacts and camera which are much more user friendly. I'm enjoying cm7 but I may soon flash back to something like Darky which is more tuned to my personal uses.
also wondering this. i flashed cm7 3/4 update then went back to firefly when 2.5 came out. firefly is my fav 2.2 rom. but i switched back to cm7 still miss a lot of features of 2.2, but i think once cm7 is a little farther along it will be awesome. for now its just fun being on gingerbread and stable.
Yeah... the screen off animation is uber lol. That prolly was one of the biggest initial draws for me. I never had a CM build either. I agree there are certain features from Sammy that are nice.

[Q] Can anyone help me choose a good rom for an old man

My old SGS is being given to my dad and I was wondering which rom and kernel would be best. 2.3 and 4.0 make no difference. He isn't that much of a tech-geek so any fancy features or outfits are not important. What is important however is battery life, that it's easy to use, and that it has a smooth user interface. I was thinking of cyanogen mod 7 or maybe aokp if it works well enough with only a 512 MB ram. MIUI and some others are also up for consideration. It would be great if it had Finnish language capabilities also but this is not a strict requirement.
Check out TeamHacksung's ICS build. Its incredibly stable, full featured but also very clean and crisp. Nothing overwhelming, worth a look !
Seriously if it is for your dad I'd look for a stock rom... maybe one of the most recent ones then just add the lag fix, semaphore or other faster kernel. Or leave as is with stock.
Cyanogenmod 7.1 stable has the potential "hello hello" bug which I can't see my Dad enjoying & for me CM9 was fairly unstable & laggy. Also got "hello hello" issue which I have not had on any other Roms although some have had it on other Roms.
Most ICS builds are great and very stable but they do have bugs at this point and are mostly Alpha builds.
Darky's rom would be nice and Ficeto's base roms are stable, pre-rooted and so on. Try them
Stock roms probably have the longest battery life. But really if he's not going to use the features of a smart phone (internet, mail, etc etc), maybe you would want to look into selling it and buying a phone designed for older people? (Not too sure how old he is)
There are phones designed with large keypads etc, specifically for the elderly. But that's for people who are 70-80+
just gave an htc incredible 1 to my father inlaw
has basic cyanogenmod 7.. he figured it out pretty quick concidering he went from a flip phone
huters seem
HAHA, my dad is not that old. He will learn it quite quickly, I’m sure. I tried few roms yesterday and Cyanogenmod 7 was pretty good. But then I flashed AOKP M4 and I don’t think going back to 2.3 even on this low hardware is an option anymore. ICS runs smoothly, is fast and works very well. Also flashed Devil’s kernel and battery life seems to be better than with stock, at least in idle and many people seem to recommend it. I won’t use stock rom because I don’t wish touchwiz to my worst enemy let alone to my dad. Custom launcher don’t work that well as they won’t stay in memory.
