The "What applications are you running" Thread - Touch CDMA Android Development

Okay I think the time has come for everyone to spill their guts about what apps you have installed on your phone with a brief description of what it is. I guess since this was my idea, I'll go first.

I just ordered one of these, will let you know how it works out, could be very useful with the camera on the HTC Touch.
Macro lens for bar code reading.

Other than the widgets, you said that it had a ton of other features. Which ones were you referring to?

Some that haven't been mentioned that I use.

(FYI...Most of the features use your data plan)

aa

Sound Hound - I find this app better than Shazam

tapXDA for reading new posts i want to replay to later
notepad color- note taking app
google maps
batterylife widget- battery life program

Does anyone know if this app http://hanashi.nu/ uses data or if having just unlimited mobile browser would work... i dont want to get charged for data usage again if thats what the app does. Could someone with a data plan check it out? Thanks

Adobe Reader-self explanatory
Advanced task killer-see above

Must Have App List

What are some apps that you feel are "must haves," and what do they do? Im trying to get a list going. Here's mine:
-Hello AIM (If you use AIM you know what it does, great interface, I love it, alot better than the one already installed, but is only for AIM)
-Saved MMS (saves MMS)
-OI File Manager (file manager since andriod doesnt have one built in)
What are some other great apps?
Cinema - best video play imo
Skype - chat but no voip
aTrackDog - Update all your apps in one sweep. Brilliant.
AndFTP - Full featured FTP client.
AnyCut - Create shortcuts to.. anything.
AppsInstaller - Install apps from your SD card.
OI File Manager - Easy to use file manager.
Toggle Settings - Change settings in a few taps.
Wallpaper Set & Save - Set PNG wallpapers, no more ****ty jpeg compression.
Task Manager for Root Users - List/terminate running processes.
MyBackup - Backup all your apps and settings.
Screenshot - Essential för theme developing.
Solitaire - Waste an hour playing card games.
AccuWeather - Nice weather app, lists my home town unlike most other weather apps.
Last.fm - The official client. Very nice except for a buffering issue at the start of some songs.
PixelPipe - Very nice app for picture sharing/uploading.
QuickPedia - Wiki app.
SnapPhoto - Makes the bland default G1 camera come to life, briliant app. A must have.
Yellowbook - comes in handy if you need number or address
Task Manager - End programs, save battery life
Video Player
Spelldial - quicker way to dial people
sms popup - like sms bubbles for wm shows message and who's sending
screenshot
Shazam - need to find out who sings a song you like? Put up to speaker and it will find name and artist!
Scoreboard - keeps track of sports scores - most sports
Linda and astro file manager - linda lets you download stuff off internet you cant normally download. I like astro so i have both but astro doesnt do download trick.
klaxon - lets you set mp3's as alarm
transition effects - gives your phone cool effects
streamfurous - streaming radio
bonsai blast - fun game
force ring (old version) - puts ur phone on loud if u lose it
gmote - play files from ur computer on ur phone, or use ur phone as a remote for movies. and control the mouse/keyboard movments of the computer via G1
handycalc - brilliant calculator, really advanced
misssed call - gives u missed call notices (and u can change the led color)
playsvideo - great video playing app iwth nice interface
ringdroid - cut out ur own ringtones
chompSMS - improved text message app with onscreen keyboard
snaptell - barcode scanner AND it recognizes pictures (ex. a bluray movie) and will find prices by the picture taken
tunewiki - audio player WITH synced LYRICS!
K9SMS - not in Market, but it's SO much more responsive than the default Messaging (which it is based on.) Scrolling is 100% smooth, unlke the stock app.
http://brad.livejournal.com/2399905.html
Task Manager for Root - Can see what's running and can kill apps when you're not using them.
ASTRO - Great file manager that also installs nonmarket apps and has a great built-in photo browser.
Twidroid - If you use twitter, you want Twidroid.
PapiJump - It's a stupid, but addictive game.
Shazam - hold it up to a song, it'll tell you who sings it. Amazing. I suspect it's magic though.
The Weather Channel - Good weather app
SnapPhoto - Great replacement for the stock camera app
Klaxon - Good upgrade for the stock alarm clock
ATrackDog - run it to see which of your programs has updates.
ALthough I wouldn't consider them 'must haves' I really like Brightroid (britekite client) and Locale (lets you automate system settings and other functions depending on GPS location... I use it to automatically check in at locations on brightkite)
Anycut - Allow to make shortcuts
ASTRO or Linda File Manager - I have both because I'm use to ASTRO but Linda has a plug-in built in so you can download any files from the default browser. ( I dont like Steel)
NetCount or NetTraffic - I'm trying to figure out which one is better because I tether alot so I want to keep an eye on my usage.
PF Voicemail+ - Its alot easier to check my voice messages than anything I've seen before.
Save MMS - Must have to save images from texts, better than having to forward to email and save.
SnapPhoto - Better than default phone app.
aTrackdog - Same as above from what others said.
PixelPipe - I've had a photobucket account for few years now. This app lets you upload pics straight to your account from your G1 alot easier.
Firewallet - UI is the best I've seen for a money managment app. This beats having to use a checkbook or using a scratch paper to see if I can afford something and is easier to check than logging into BOA.
Shopsavvy - Finds better deals than Google it seems sometimes. Good for if you think you've seen a deal at a store.
Looks like I got alot more apps to download now.
I like ChompSMS for the onscreen Keyboard, tho it doesn' support mms yet
MYBookmarks is great - it allows you to easily redo your bookmarks if like me you like top regularly clear the data from Browser. - I was put off thinking I'd have to export ALL my IE bookmarks (Ive got loads!!) but then I realised I could prepare a little folder just for my G1 bookmarks on my PC Ie, and then just export THAT folder. Works brill for me and makes up for not having Opera Sync on the browser.
Another vote for Task Manager - worth getting rooted just fort being able to use this app
Cubik is a decent tetris clone, and I have two solitaires, one has a greart auto bit that flies the cards to the piles automatically, and another that has a score system
PicSay is one of my favourite ever mobile apps - lets you pop bits onto MMS pics like captions, thought bubbles and other bits n pieces!!
Night Clock is grand - I put it on overnight, as I've no clock by my bed - Huge digital clock display with a built in alarm tht can tag songs in your music folder as the alarm sound.
And another vote for these apps - Astro, WallpaperSetnSave, TheWeatherChannel, Power Manager, and finally Dark keys, which allows you to turn the Keyboard backlight off with one touch (for those with White G1 as it's sometimes hard to see in certain lights)
Regards - Daisy xxx
As far as paid apps go i recommend...
Tetris
WordSearch - If your into word search puzzles
Bejeweled - kinda hard to use finger with but fun as usual
Stay away from video conversion paid apps, the audio on all available so far lag behind the video about 6 seconds or so.
Astro is by far the best file manager, it has application manager, select all copy paste, shortcut to any file on home screen, built in picture viewer, and loads of other feature. it doesn't have linda's download plug in but theres an app called download crutch and i think it would work
Visual Voice maillove this app, you can delete messages with out listening instead of calling and pressing 7...7...7...7
MyBackupbeautiful backup tool especially for those who dont have root and nandroid
some others are:
The Weather Channel i think it better than weather bug just my opinion
Steel Browser
Chomp SMS wish it could do MMS
fIRC can keep in touch with #android
launchpad if you use more than 6apps
Some more:
mycollection
phonebook
snapphoto
screenshot
twidroid
unzip
translate
tts service/translator
Last but not least Screencrack to keep away annoying friends
AnyCut – a MUST HAVE app
Accuweather – weather report for today + 3days, and sat view
AK Notepad – export to txt, email, sms etc
NetCounter – monitor GPRS and Wifi in sessions and/or total
RingDroid – edit and resave MP3s for ringtones, excellent app
Twidroid – tiwtter app, thought I'd give it a go LOL
Video Player – pretty good, autorotate etc
WikiMobile – mobile optimised Wikipedia search
Astro – must have – GREAT file manager.
SMS Popup – must have – popup notifications for SMS/MMS
Netcounter update is great, it's finicky to use at first
Locale – insanely good, I just set it so that it syncd with meetings in my calendar to automatically apply silent mode and turn vibration off.
Toggle Settings – LOTS of setting toggles and deeply configurable.
Txtract – back up SMSs to html, csv, or txt
SMS Backup – insanely good, back up your SMSs over the air to your gmail account, tags them with "SMS" (or label of your choice) bypasses the inbox straight into archive, and puts all SMSs in conversation view. Perfection.
Wallpaper Set and Save – must have – avoid that ****ty system jpg compression and save highres wall papers (make sure your images are 640x480).
EnKeep – passworded txt files. I keep alarms codes etc in there
TextEdit – ok txt editor and reader
Bookmark 2 – set any bookmark (default browser only) as a shortcut and apply an icon – bummer it doesn't work with Steel
Steel – browser with autorotate and on screen keyboard
Klaxon – way deeper function for your alarm clock
Dial Favs – ok link to contact favs. Needs more options
Greed – RSS reader with Google Reader integration, buggy though
MyMaps Editor – integration with My Maps on Google Maps
Tethering applications
for rooted phones:
tetherBlu - http://androidactivity.com/
tetherWifi - http://androidactivity.com/tetherWifi.html
for phones that are not rooted
tetherBot - http://graha.ms/androidproxy/
I think aTrackDog is rather useless now - in the market, select "my downloads" and the market will tell you if updates for apps are available.
tracky is getting axed.

I know, i'm VERY happy to see it go... way too buggy and annoying.
Terminal Emulator: duh.
ASTRO: when filemanaging with the terminal is too tedious
Power Manager: autoadjust settings based on battery life. Doesn't do 2G/3G switching though
Some weather app: weather channel, accuweather, weatherbug, moxier world... pick one
Ringdroid: make custom ringtones
Astrid: best todo/tasks app out there
Tunewiki: use this instead of the default music player
AK Notepad or Sticky: good note apps. AK goes the traditional list route while sticky goes for graphical post-it note style
ChompSMS: onscreen keyboard
Wallpaper Set and Save or Weekly Wallpaper: only ways to get high-resolution wallpapers. WSS if you want to make your own, WW if you're too lazy to.
Missed call: blinks LED color of your choosing when you have a missed call, SMS, BT, or calendar... the G1 has more LED colors than you probably know
handyCalc: a semi-advanced calculator, can graph and solve simple algebraic and trignonometric equations. Nowhere near PocketCAS for WM though.
Not at all essential, but Sky Map is probably one of the cooler apps out there for the G1. Uses compass and accelerometer to detect phone orientation and shows a star/planet/constellation map of the area that the phone is pointing at.

AK Notepad now has a POSTIT mode that posts your note on your home screen
how good is Chomp sms, and Steel browser? I dont think I care much for the onscreen keyboard, is there anything else better?
SlideME Application Manager 'SAM' - http://slideme.org/sam
To install SAM visit from your G1 http://slideme.org/sam2 and install apk.
Then you will have access to all the apps on SlideME marketplace to install from SAM on your G1 with ease.
Also SAM supports purchase of apps.

must have apps on your Hero

post you list here of apps here
this is to help people like me who have never used android before
DON'T POST LINKS TO WAREZ....I WILL BAN YOU
you have been warned
Ok i`ll go first then! Even though i`m new to Android also....
1 Power Manager, something ive always wanted on a phone, especially when you have phones that can go flat in one day of use. Allows you to set it so that when your battery is getting low it`ll turn of wifi 3g etc.
2 Beyondpod the best RSS feeder.
3 Copilot live 8 the only sat nav for it as yet.
4 Bluex not tried it yet to be honest but you need it for sending files.
5 Netcounter for all of you on capped data packages. monitors how much is used.
6 Shazam obvious really!
7 beebPlayer A quality iplayer style app watch live bbc channels too.
8 Task manager does what you think it does!
There are many other apps that i have some ive not even tried yet. Some worth a mention are: YouTube downloader, XGalaga, Tunewiki, snapPhoto, last.fm, imeem mobile, locale, compass, and barcode scanner.
Feel free to ask me any questions on any i love to help....
Taskiller for killing off processes and apps.
Astro - file explorer app.
Agree with Co-pilot above - wouldn't have bought it without proper sat nav program.
Not essential but useful - Toggle Settings and Tone Picker.
Still looking for a decent movie player which seems a long way off. If coreplayer ports over the Hero will be complete!
Wikitude augmented reality browser - show it to your iPhone pals and watch them weep...
Second BeebPlayer. Really nice iPlayer implimentation.
My Hero came with the pre-latitude Google Maps - needed an upgrade!
A decent compass app!
London Tube Status app - so I know whether to run or walk out of my office in the evening!
Great thread- thanks for the advise.
However I cant find this beebplayer app... help?
Locale - Awesome app. Lets you customise your phone based on location, time, etc.
Last.fm - until spotify is released
OpenSudoku (Best one by quite a margin)
ShopSavvy - Barcode price comparison that works in the UK and gives you local results as well as web ones
Google Voice Search - Works surprisingly well
Doom!!!!
ScummVM - Has issues but you simply can't beat playing Monkey Island on the phone.
beebPlayer - Works OTA on T-Mobile, including live channels

what about MSN? i expect my Hero in 3 days, need to prepare also, barcode scanner, is that pre-installed or needs to be downloaded/bought?
Barcode scanner is free from the marketplace, it works really well.
Ive got some - had an android Handset as my main phone for 6 months and I adore it - currently have a Google Ion dev version of magic.
PicSay (and Picsay Pro) - Ive got the pro version - takes pics from camera or gallery and really easily adds speech bubbles, clipart, doodles, colourise, warp, captions etc then allows you to send via mms, mail, to twitter, picassa, facebook.
AK Notepad - very simple, easy to use and very robust. can back up to SD.
Twidroid and Babbler - might be redundant on Hero but great twitter and facebook apps.
Bettercut - allows you to add shortcuts for allsorts of stuff, and to edit any shortcut on your desktop to show your own icons.
UK TVguide - free version has a pop up on start and an add strip at bottom but small and simple to use
Wallpaper Set And Save - lets you use .pngs for crisper images
Jewellust - brilliant bejewelled clone a bit like Jewel Quest...
BookmarkBR - Backup to SD and restore your bookmarks from and to the android browser - great for when you eventually start wiping a lot and loading roms etc...
G-Backup - backs up SMS and MMS and a few other things to folders on gmail server. Auto back up is brilliant again if you wipe and change roms a lot you never lose a message.
Root Explorer - for when hero gets root - lets you go anywhere and options to toggle r/w and r/o in each folder, to copy paste and move stuff - dangerous in the wrong hands obviously...
Beebplayer is great, as is an app called Television, lets you download and run videocasts mostly from US but grand

Hi Liam,
I've been on Windows mobile for years and have crossed over to android and got a htc hero. I'm very impressed with android and wish I'd crossed over sooner.
One thing I really miss is microsoft voice command on my old wm device.
Do you know if there is a similar app for the android os? There are voice dialers on android market but they dont seem to cut it for me.
Can you help please?
Cheers,

I decided to leave out anything that requires root to be useful. I also kinda assumed most people that need it know what it is.
Uh your list REALLY supports piracy.

How can you automatically assume someone is going to download stuff illegally. There is plenty of free stuff that can be used with those programs. . . if they are so illegal then why doesn't Google ban them from the market!

Not old at all actually. The day I created it, I went through my installed applications and hand picked them. It was called something else and they changed the name only very recently.

Edit: Also just realized there was a typo in my original post. It's fixed now.

that app never worked fine for me... I use another app called "MB Notifications for FB (Free)" (had a different name before but was suspended by Facebook for a while and had to change name)

I'm thinking of buying the pro version since the app is quite cool
Just bought a stylus. Was hoping it'd work on the vivid! If so, are there any note taking apps that are really nice? Thanks!
I use evernote with skitch, but there are more 'notebook' style apps out there that I'm only vaguely familiar with. Anyone else have suggestions? Also, which stylus did you get? I was thinking about getting one for use with my nook and vivid.

Does stylus work on Vivid ? Can you confirm please ..
Thanks
Any stylus should work, it's a matter of how well it works. without the custom software like the htc flyer and with the big footprint of most stylii, notes seem to take up way too much real estate on my phone, but acceptable on tablet. Personal preference though.

Not true. Has to t least be capacitive.
Oh. I sorta took the capacitive to be a given. Probably shouldn't have though...
There was one I liked but I can't think of the name right now. Will post it when it comes to me though. Acase seems decent but they all look like bit of a rip off to me. Could just buy capacitive foam, wire, and make your own. Tons of videos out there on how-to.
I'm wondering if the HTC one will work with our phone, the one used on the Flyer and Jetstream.
That would be awesome. Even more if we could get the app that lets us pen notes while recording and then link them to our calender, like with the tablets.
A student's perfect tool
