How do you enable North American Bands on Telus Milestone - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

I have noticed that some ROMs (nandroid backups) do not have the 850 MHZ band enabled for AT&T North America and show up as No Service on my phone. How do you enable it?
I assume it has to do with the build.prop

I've got the same problem...

Take the following five files from /system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default on a working firmware and put them in the same place in the other firmware.
File_Audio
File_Audio2
File_GSM
File_Seem_Flex_Tables
generic_pds_init
Permissions are -rw-r--r-- for all files and user/group are 0:0
I have done this to enable the MotoFrenzy based on EU firmware to work on the Telus network.

Root Explorer is one of the easier ways to copy the files. It's very much work the cheap price.

you can try the following: go to the testing menu (put *#*#4636#*#* in dialer). Choose Phone information and then push the menu button and choose Radio band where you can choose USA band. I get an error message in the stock euro rom but maybe it works for you.

thanks friend, but it seems like i'm getting the same error as you "SET USA BAND UNSUCCESSFUL"
i able to copy the files over from a working 2.1 rom, i must be missing a step.

ok i got it working, i was missing a very important step, i hope this helps some of you.
after overwriting the files, the file permissions and user/group ownerships changed.
first remount the /System in Read Write mode in ADB
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
Then i had to set the proper permissions using chown and chgrp commands via ADB (As stated in the previous posts)
example: chown 0 File_GSM and chgrp 0 File_GSM to all 5 files.
thanks again.

hey guys, so i used an app call super manager to copy the files you said off the workin flash, then i loaded my froyo 2.2 softwar on my milestone an then went back to super manager an pasted the files in the same place i got them, i dont got a signal still, but at the same time i feel like im doing somethin wrong because it never asked me to over write teh files, thanks please help

[Help] Installing Footprints and other HTC apps Via adb

Recently I've been trying to install the HTC Footprints .apk on to my phone.
I've tried using multiple file managers to install the app, they get to the installation screen and fail to install (yes unknowk sources is turned on), I've also tried installing it via adb but I get errors such as
adb push method:
Code:
Code:
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb push HtcFootprints.apk /system/app/
failed to copy 'HtcFootprints.apk' to '/system/app//HtcFootprints.apk': Read-only file system
Using the adb install method:
Code:
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb install HtcFootprints.apk
1080 KB/s (1054762 bytes in 0.953s)
pkg: /data/local/tmp/HtcFootprints.apk
Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_DEXOPT]
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>
Any Ideas on what my problem could be?
I orginally roted my phone manully but I had to reset back to stock due to technical issues, but I re-rooted it using the flash recovery method located http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584029
Another tid bit of information is that yesterday I could not use my SU (super user permissions) until I installed other roms and wiped it and did a nandroid restore.
did you
adb remount
adb push Footprints.apk /system/app
?
I found that using the fresh kitchen is much easier especially when I'm trying out many different Roms. Have you tried it yet i know that i have all my .apks setup in the designated folder makes it really simple if I've just flashed a new ROM and need to push all my apps. Hope I was helpful.
Check out Root Explorer in the market. Worth the money in my honest opinion.
"The ultimate file manager for root users. Access the whole of android's file system(including the elusive data folder!). Includes Text Editor, multi-select, zip files, execute scripts, search, re-mount, permissions, bookmarks, email, home, APK binary XML file viewer."
Root Explorer saves me so much time that I wasted putting in all the adb commands to do the same things. It is also the fastest way to remove Sprint's bloatware.

But after I did this, I rebooted my hero but I could not get it to load past the boot screen.
most likely, your system memory is full. try removing another system apk of similar size (something you dont use such as stock, twitter facebook, etc)via adb and reinstall footprints the same way. I have had this happen before as well, and doing what I just stated worked for me

Would removing the voicemail app work the same? adb shell rm /system/app/Voicemail.apk (not sure if this is the code or not)
you can remove all the ringtones and put them on your SD card... I know RegawMOD uses that trick to save space.

Yes that would work as well as what mrinehart93 just stated about moving ringtones, etc to the sd which will free up nearly 6 mb of system memory(actually did that myself but didnt think of it). here is a link to accomplish that http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5936137&postcount=3236

See if that helps. Reason it wont boot up is because if you're on a newer rom that doesnt have .odex files, then it wont work.

What Rom are you running?
If adb is successfully pushing the files (like it is in your posts) then the phone is successfully being mounted, so that's not your problem. You also have enough system space, because if you did not it would tell you that you didn't, and I didn't see that error message in any of your posts either.
Most likely, you're using a ROM that doesn't use .odex files (almost all of the 2.1 ROMs that are out now don't, with the exception of DarchLegend I believe) so the .apk isn't compatible because it's missing the classes.dex file and the .odex file won't work because it's not compatible with the ROM.
If you are using a ROM that uses .odex files, then you need to be sure that the APK you're using is the right version for your ROM. If you try using HtcFootprints.apk from a 1.5 ROM on a 2.1 ROM, it more than likely will not work, due to different frameworks and all that fun stuff.

Anyone got a spare copy of /system/bin/sh I could borrow?

Hi, I accidentally deleted the /system/bin/sh file from my system while messing around in the terminal after rooting my phone. Seeing how the shell is a pretty important part of the operating system, I kinda don't want to reboot the phone until I've replaced it. Therefore I wondered if any of you could just send me a copy of the shell on your system. I've got the Motorola Milestone UK model, with Android 2.1 Update 1.
are you running a custom ROM or just stock 2.1.1? you can always download a custom ROM update.zip made for the milestone 2.1.1 and unzip it, and just copy the /system/bin/sh file back onto your phone using root explorer or push using adb then make sure the proper permissions are set (i believe its 777)
i'm in the US and have the "Droid" so that's really all the help i can offer.
hope that helps

Cannot edit build.prop anymore - read-only.

Using Nook Color, CM7 nighly 107.
Got Netflix working a while back by modifying the build.prop file using ES File Explorer - no issues.
Tried again to make some mods and cannot save it anymore. ES reports "writable - NO"
Tried to "su chmod 666" it and it comes back with "File system read-only"
Is anybody else seeing this? What am I missing?
Thanks...
I encountered a similar situation during the build.prop edit while using ES File Explorer on my NC running CM7 on internal memory.
Possibly, the permissions in the program need to be changed to enable it to "write".
Here's what I did: Menu==>Settings==>Root options. "Check" Root Explorer and if my memory serves me correctly, click "Yes" to get past the "Experimental Feature", toggle the "Cyanogen Mod" (if you're using CM7) radio button, click OK and check the "Mount File System" box to make the system writable.
Now, it should be writable. Hope this helps.

In 106 SU wasn't working correctly until I reinstalled it. You can't modify build.prop without superuser rights. Check the thread about SU / Superuser missing in 106 (and I bet 107) for instructions. It worked for me.

Interesting... the OP withdrew his post: (apparently it's back in 107)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131369
However when I checked it, the SU app was misbehaving, Force closing, refusing to respond to the menu command. So I reinstalled it. Now it's OK.
Unfortunately I still cannot edit the build.prop file.
I don't think it's a superuser problem because without SU access ES cannot even see the system folder!!! I can see it, and edit the file, just cannot save it.
You might try fixing permissions under recovery.
have you tried the app: nook netflix fixer?
I've changed it successfully on the past 6 consecutive nightlies using adbwireless pull/push. However since 106 I've hsd to reflash su. N108 hasn't given me the su issue. Is it fixed?
Same problem with the build.prop file: cannot save changes, or copy over it. Running in nightly 108 today. Tried both Root Explorer and ES File manager.
I think you need to change the build.prop file properties to be rw using chmod. Don't forget to mount system as rw before doing the chmod.

I'm not great at linux but I do it differently. Try chmod +rw /system/build.prop . Make sure you have system mounted as RW first. I'd also check superuser to make sure whatever terminal/file explorer you are using still has root privileges.

Does anybody know why this app can modify the build.prop file while ES File Explorer cannot?
I had to mount the folder containing build.prop with rw access in order to use chmod. I think the latest version of the netflix fixer may do the same (see my post in that thread). In short, I used;
Code:
su
busybox mount -0 rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk1p3 /system
in the terminal before using the chmod command in order to give myself rw permissions in the folder. I'm only two days old at this, so it beats me why root doesn't have normal rw permissions on the folder.

Thanks for the tip. I ran the command successfully (by the way, small typo, I believe it's -o not -0) and was able to chmod and edit the file with vi.
That's where confusion began. I reboot and after the reboot I was able to modify the file without remounting the /system directory. The mount command does not surive a reboot does it?
Have you tried just pulling the build.prop
Code:
c:/<target_folder> adb pull /system/build.prop
then editing it with note pad then pushing it back and rebooting>

That is confusing. What are the full (i.e. ls -l) permissions on the file now? (It's possible that it somehow ended up with o+w, but I don't understand how - vi isn't exactly known for changing permissions on-the-fly.)

Request for help: Setting write permission for pppd-ril.options file

It's quite possible the script is for the m8 since the script names an m8 folder, but I'm not an expert on scripts by any means. @clsA: Do you know what may be going on here?
Do those directories referred to in your screenshot actually exist on your phone?
Also: I was wrong about this being Sprint variant exclusive. My bad on that.

I can rename the folder.... it's simply a folder. the scrip is made for m7. not m8. I am not able to get the exact reason for the problem but most such things get solved on updating busybox. Try doing that. Use the tool by jrummy from the market or download the busybox wraithdu installer script from the v6 supercharger thread by zeppelinrox.

i would guess you're using Windows Notepad (or similar) to edit/create that script?
you need to use UNIX style EOL delimiters for those commands to work.
EDIT: i've attached an example, the same script (just lists directory contents), looks the same in the Script Runner, once saved with Windows EOL delimiters, gives the first output,
same script with UNIX EOL, gives the second output.

Yes I used the notepad to edit the original. now with your help I did understand and used the notepad++, converted to UNIX EOL and saved as script (sh). No errors now on missing directories but I can't copy/replace the file even with cp -f to force it. I can't understand which command ES explorer uses when I manually copy the file, because it replaces the file successfully.

Not sure, but
Are you running the script as root?
And maybe you need file permission to be 666 instead of 660.

Yeah Always run on root. Tried 666 and 777. Tried with cp, cat, rm first then CP. No success.
