Strange Beaviour GPS - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've Updated to last 2.1 a while ago and rooted, speedup fixed my sgs. And I edited the gps.conf to Europe.
GPS works perfect on *#*#1472365#*#* I get like 10 satellites in around 7 to 20 secs and I get satellites too on gps test app but with google maps it just don't work I get a message like "Temporary unable to locate you"
Any ideas or solutions ??
PS: I don't want to update to 2.2 until there is a real fix for gps (or official release)

Same for me

gps is reported to work in 2.2, however network location does not work at all...

Sorry french link but it shows Froyo and actually I might update when I come back from work, it looks pretty nice and the user is reporting that everything works pretty well from gps to network
PS: link in attachment because I'm still not able to post links even after I contacted mods ><

[Q] My GPS hasn't worked since updating to 2.2 - help! - RESOLVED

Hi,
I got a Samsung Galaxy S here in Australia, rooted it and upgraded from 2.1 to 2.2 I know that GPS worked just fine with 2.1, I was able to walk home and see my position updating very nicely on Google maps
Since updating to 2.2, GPS hasn't worked at all. When I turn it on, and start an application that uses GPS (Navigation, Maps, etc), the GPS icon sits there and flashes back and forth between those two types of icons and I don't get anything on the maps which shows me where I am. I haven't chased this up since upgrading, but it's starting to bug me now
After searching these forums for 'gps not working', I've pulled down the 'GPS test' application and I don't know for sure, but it appears to find one satellite:
PRN SNR Elev Azim Flags
2 11.0 74.0 150.0
But the GPS icon just sits there flashing back and forth.
I may have missed something since upgrading, do I need to do something to the phone to get my GPS working again?
Thanks!
OK, I seem to have fixed the problem I turned on "Use wireless networks" and voila! I now have successful GPS lock and position in my maps
I would have thought that you could use GPS without having "Use wireless networks" turned on!?

Wouldn't call it a successful GPS lock. Since you got it with the mobile networks. (in my case when I use it . the accuracy in my village is about 1000-1500m since the BTS is that much far from me )
So if you get into an area with weak mobile networks, wont help you much .
Wouldnt call this as resolved with "BAD GPS" cuz your GPS still sucks as before (and doesnt work , you just found a workaround that was there also before , 2.2.1 has even some other function for GPS that tries to fix it (or help?) )
But since you can use it now, its ok I guess . OH and there are kinda almost no real fixes for this. Most of SGS GPS suck . There is GPS aids, shutting down wifi, GPS status app, changing the something according to your country.
Ok!
I got the same problem as the user from the post.
GPS worked like a charm on my Galaxy S (NDrive or Google) running 2.1.
I updated it to Froyo 2.2.1 JS7 and since then it doesn`t work anymore.
I can't get a fix.
I did the GPS position test and It locks on 8 satelites. Why the F%CK it doesn`t work anymore?
I am almost going back to Eclair.
Any sugestions?
TY!
So you get a lock when doing the GPS test, but no luck in any other applications? I couldn't get a lock at all until I turned on my wireless as well as the GPS, then it worked for GPS test as well as applications...
I get a lock on 8 satelites on the Location Test with and without "Use Wireless connections".
BUT
I can't get a lock when I am using Google maps, with or without "Use Wireless connections".
I bought the AIDS GPS app on Market, but it did't work neither.

I also installed GPS Aids and paid for it.
This program does automatic changes to your GPS settings.
Maybe it works for you.

Hi.
Try to download "FasterFix" from the market, then choose your region (Germany i think) and press go. the apk change some settings in the "gps.conf". Worked fine for me.
greetings,
i will give it a try, thank you
seems not to work for me :/ an other idea?
Got to Folder--Android-->startup.txt-->open it and change your gps zone to "de" It fix all your Problems.

Huuu, i don't think so, it isn't used in nand builds, and he is using one of them, not an SD build...
Have a look here, it helped me get a cold fix in under a minute, still a lot worse than with WM or WP7, but better than previously...

Do you get a sat fix in Google Maps?
The gps Almanach is only send every 12 minutes. It is needed to get a fix.
Read the wikipedia article on gps.
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGPS
Starting gps for the first time can take a while. Not only 12 minutes but longer if you are in an area with bad reception like inside a building or inside a car with tinted windows.
Go outside in an open area wait for 30minutes. If you don't get a sat fix by then, something is wrong.
Next time sat fix will be much faster because it only has to update the almanach not download the whole thing unless you haven't used it for a long time.
Sorry for kicking this old thread, but it seems silly to open a new thread for the same problem.
Did you ever get this fixed? I have GPS in all apps. Google Maps, all my weather apps, hell even in CoPilot Live 8 the local weather function works fine!
But for some reason it just won't get a signal in CoPilot... .
I waited for over an hour, nothing. I tried every gps.conf file out there.. Nothing. Well, I get an insanely fast lock in Maps... .

[Q] Problem With GPS

Hi guys,
ok, my GPS has not worked on my Galaxy S for a long time now. I am always flashing new roms, kernals and it may be something to do with that.
Currently I am running the MUIU Beta rom, but it hasnt worked on previous roms like Darkys.
I decided to download GPS aids from the market ro run some tests.
It downloads the LTO test file, but is unable to copy it.
It says "The application cannot copy files from SDcard to a SYSTEM folder. Maybe it is a busybox problem"
Busybox 1.18.4 is installed to /sbin/
GPS aids has superuser permissions
Google maps hasnt been able to get a fix for a long time. GPS Test cannot find any satelites.
Not sure what I did to cause this problem, but can it be fixed?
Is this a hardware issue?
I know it sounds silly, but do you have your wireless turned on when you are trying to use your GPS? After flashing to 2.2 on my Galaxy S, I found that I couldn't get a GPS lock without having my wireless turned on!
Edit: My original thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=986151
Thanks for the quick answer.
Yes the Wifi is switched on, but nothing. Not even one satelite.
The funny thing is that the GPS used to work great. A lot of people werent happy with it but I had no problems.
I got a lock within 10 seconds. I just dont know what I have done to stop it working! lol
Flashing roms you may now have a bad modem or wrong set up especially as you have a beta rom and darky rom .
I would flash stock with pit 512 and reparation checked in other words build a clean phone .

Have you tried the gps test app to see if it is at least seeing the gps satellites or possibly getting a lock?

Hi, yes Ive tried that app. It doesnt find any satelites at all. Nothing!
Unfortunately, I really can't think of anything else. Sadly I believe JJEgan's advice above maybe the only other option
This thread has another possible option http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=974702
You may also want to check out the GPS settings on the phone. I'd have to search the forums for the code that gives you access to them.
*#*#1472365#*#* for 2.1 Eclair.
*#*#3214789650#*#* for 2.2 Froyo.
Not sure, but give this a try... my i9000 can get a gps lock in about 5 seconds with no wifi.
Download Fasterfix from the marketplace.
Run it and choose the region that you are in.
In the Location settings, turn off "Use wireless networks" and turn on "Use GPS Satellites"
Go into the LbsTestMode
*#*#1472365#*#* for 2.1 Eclair.
*#*#3214789650#*#* for 2.2 Froyo.
Application settings - Operation mode - Standalone
Application settings - Accuracy - 100
SUPL/CP Settings - Auto Config
Re-boot your phone
Go back into the LbsTestMode
Get Position Test - Let it run for at least 3 minutes while your phone is outside (clear sky view).
Delete GPS Data.
Hopefully that will work for you as well. I was unable to get a GPS lock without wifi prior to this, and now my GPS locks perfectly on its own.
2.2.1
I9000UGJL2
Voodoo 5.4.1
Darky's v9.3.XWJS5

Gingerbread GPS slow fixing??

Since I received the Gingerbread OTA I have seen that when run gMaps it takes long time (minutes) to fix GPS. I think that is only for cold start, coz after fix if I close an restart the GPS it fixes in few seconds as normal.
I have tried with GPS Status but it seems everything OK.
Before Gingerbread it was really fast fixing both in cold and warm start.
Thx
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I've also noticed the same problem. GPS seems to be much slower getting a fix on my position - even with a clear sky and at places it worked well before. Don't know if there's much I can do about it but hope for a patch from Google.
Seems that it's a very common issue, try to google " gingerbread slow gps fix"
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Stock 2.3.3 ROM after OTA update, GPS only locked 1 out of 10 tries, and took a long time to do so. It is not even stable, and lost signal after a few minutes. I had looked everywhere including google forum, and there is no joy.
Finally read it somewhere to try GpsFix in the market and now GPS fixes in <10 seconds!
GPS-Fix Problem with Gingerbread
Hello,
i have the same problem after upgrading to Gingerbread 2.3.3. I have found this thread in the Google support forum (Search after this with Google):
GPS Navigation problems after Gingerbread update
and the issue is known aswell at Google issue tracking list (Search after this with Google):
NMEA Listener no longer working after upgrade to Gingerbread Issue ID 15500
The issue has been assigned medium priority over there. Maybe if more people can go there and star the issue, it will get up voted.
Sorry that i doesn't post the links directly, but its not permitted for me (not enough post so far)
The issue hasn't been assigned anything yet, the priority is 'medium' by default, once someone takes ownership of it, it should get a proper priority.
In the meantime you might like to try this:-

It works for me.
Hope it helps.

Yes, the GpsFix only worked for a few days, then the same problem surfaced again. So I followed the link and voila! now fast GPS fix again! Thanks!
Seems that 2.3.4 update fixed it...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I had the same problem on 2.3.4 and I fixed with the GPS Status, there is an option to clear all gps data. That worked for me, now the gps fix my position in a few seconds.
i used this
i have been using this [APP][ROOT] FasterFix [V1.5] - xda-developers. It needs root and also needs to be run once everytime i flash a nightly.
I get a fix in "seconds" rather than instantly. But i'm going to try that link posted above. You guys should check it out since nobody has mentioned it.
edit: on a second thought, i'd rather not try anything else because of the golden saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it" : )
That app will do nothing for the O2X, as it doesn't use the gps.conf file.
Anything it does is a placebo. CM7 now comes with a couple of GPS fixes, and that is probably the difference you're seeing.

[Q] No GPS Fix

Hi All,
I got problems getting gps fixes in Germany (Aachen)
In fact, i wont get any gps fix at all, i tried the app "gps status" but nothing happens.
i tried changing the pool servers in gps.conf to de.pool and europe.pool servers,
set near countries (be, nl, lu, fr) as secondary servers and nearly every gps fix thread i found in the last 2 weeks but still nothing works
second mysterius thing is that in my hometown (Duisburg, germany too) there is no problem with my gps connection and i got a fix in like 30seconds.
i dont know if that problem occurs because Aachen is really near to 2 countrie's frontiers but i really ran out of ideas what to try :/
no matter how hard i try to find something myself or edit the gps.conf my gps status keeps like this all the time (attachment)
please help me :/ (and excuse my bad english *blush*)
1. Try "GPS test" from the market. This app will show you the satelites and their position. If after about 20 min. outdoor nothing is showed you have a hardware or rom-problem.
2. If a sat. is shown mybe you have wrong configuered firewall. I don´t remember the process which get the gps-position by the servers.
3. I had never problems with any server, all works fine for me, but with the app "fasterfix" you can change them and give an european a try.
Hope can help you.
1. When im in a good position GPS test and GPS status occasionally see a satellite or two, but they disappear as fast as they appear :/
2. i dont use a firewall at all, i think.. is there a android standard firewall or something?^^
3. i tried fasterfix and some gps.conf tricks from xda, too
also i tried adding or changing different pool.ntp.org servers in my gps.conf
but nothing helps :/
the real funny thing is, that saturday and sunday i was in Duisburg and used GPS for Running and Cycling (Endomondo 30km~) and had nothing near a problem, no edge or something that could indicate gps problems, satfix in under 1 minute and stuff.
Now, back in Aachen, most gps using apps tell me there is even no gps available :/
the hardware and rom didnt changed at all, i really dont know why this mean little thing wont work
thanks for your reply btw!
You should get a gps-fix with gps-test outdoor within 20-30min without an internet-access. Be patient, due a totally new allocation via gps without server-support can take a lot of time (sat-search, time-fixing …). Sats appear and disapper, this is normal during a totally new allocation. After this you can discard a hardware/ROM – problem.
If this work, you can search for the server-access issue to get a faster gps-fix.
P.S.: Android normally haven’t a firewall in stockROM and your attachment in your first post can’t be shown.
The attachment was just a screenshot of GPS status showing no satellites, but trying.^^
so i will try to go out and let that little mean phone search the sky for satellites now^^
humpf... no effect at all...
Then I recommend to go back to stock-ROM (without root of course) an contact the LG support and send it back (don’t forget nandroid backup!). Maybe try it a last time with stock-ROM 30 min outdoor before (to get sure).
It seem to be a hardware defect. The phone don’t get enough signal strength (maybe antenna contact).
Good luck!
May be you can try ny method because i'm using it and it works onder for me..
