Can the 2.27.651.6 build be rooted? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the latest build of Android 2.1 for Sprint hero and I wanted to know if it can be rooted. I dropped down to the .5 build but my gps wouldnt work and a few other things wouldn't work. I mostly just want wireless tethering but I need to root my phone but I don't want to lose any functionality. Anyone have any advice for me?

Did you tried this you device http://unrevoked.com/m/ ?
Download the APP, then run it.

I just used that app and I don't think It worked. I have the wireless tether 2.0.5-pre3 and when I try to run it it says my kernel
Doesn't have all the necessary features to run the app. Am I using the wrong WiFi tether app?

There is no method for obtaining root with that version. You have to flash the 2.27.651.5 RUU and then use the link provided earlier. Once you have root then you can install one of the 2.27.651.6 ROMs if you want.

I did it using this. Went through a lot of other "solutions" first, but they didn't apply to my phone/build apparently. This worked perfectly!
and apparently I'm to new to post to "external" links, even though it's elsewhere on this site.

You'll need a custom kernel/ROM on your phone for wireless tether to run properly.

Wifi tether question

I have a noob question, how do I install wifi tether? I downloaded the one from the market but it doesn't work, I know flipz uses the g1 version. Where can I download that from and how do I install it? Thank you
Have you rooted your phone yet? Most custom roms will have wifi tether installed for you

Yea my phone is rooted but I love ic3's rom, with aosp and he doesn't have wifi tether on his rom.

Root or not?

I'm on the fence as to if I should root my Droid. I'm getting the message to install the 2.2 ota and part of me wants to take it but I've been wanting to root for a while now.
How much benefit would I get using cm vs stock android?
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
since i'm getting all these views and no replies, perhaps I should clarify. As far as I can tell, the only thing that really interests me about rooting is the ability to run custom themes and change my boot animation and all that. I've heard that CM is faster than stock android so that's appealing as well, but not as much as the ability to use themes and stuff.
What say you?
if i were you i would update to 2.2 and use easyroot or universalandroot to overclock then wait for a better root to come out where you can load custom roms etc.
Download Universal Androot. Press Root. Then after the process is done, reboot your phone. You are now rooted. After doing so, download ROM Manager (Free version) and flash CWMod Recovery and then install CyanogenMod. Then, buy the Premium Version from the market and while that is downloading, use the App menu in settings to back up your apps to your SD Card after the Premium is done downloading. Go back into ROM Manager and download and install one of jdLfg's kernels. You now have a ludicrously fast phone with a ridiculous amount of themes for your ROM. And all of this will take about 15, maybe twenty minutes at most.
(No, you don't need to wipe to install CyanogenMod)

Wow, thanks. I had no idea I could do it all from the phone like that.
What's the advantage to the paid rom manager vs the free one? Does the paid have access to more stuff?
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
Pay the few cents and support the dev. This such a useful you won't regret it. Makes and restore of of your ROMsnso much easier.
Sent from my Moto Droid using XDA App
I don't have a problem supporting the dev, I was just curious if there were additional features in the paid version. You know, to make it worth our while to pay.
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
I believe you have to have the paid version to download ROMs through the app.

@ L or anyone else who can help
I followed your instructions and the ROM manager wont work... should i not have already had 2.2 before doing this?
Universal Androot should have installed Superuser Permissions which should allow RM to install ROMs. If you are "stuck at M" flash SP then flash CWMod Recovery again and try to reinstall the ROM that you want.
And no, it does not matter which update you were running before you rooted. If the RM installs aren't working, then download which ROM you want from the internet and flash that.

Thank you that worked.

[Q] Tethering = rooting?

I want to tether without adding a tethering plan being that I have unlimited data on my Captivate. Do I have to root to do this because I just updated to 2.2 and had unrooted.
Yep, you have to root. Then all you need to do is install TiBackup and use it to either freeze or remove "tethering manager".
That is all there is to it!

Thank you for responding I guess I am off to root once again lol
You could also try a custom ROM, almost all have wifi and USB tethering built in.
I couldn't ever get tethering to work on stock eclair. I gave up after a few days and have been flashing ROMs since.

I never tried the tethering on 2.1 but it works fine on 2.2.

= Rooting anyway to install Custom ROM.
Once you root on stock 2.2 you will also need to remove or rename the Tethermanager APK in the system folder as well.
I never froze or removed the tether manager & my wireless tether works fine. They can't tell if I am using it can they?

Are you using the built-in Mobile AP (wifi hotspot) to do wireless tethering? And are you runing the official 2.2 UCKB1 ROM? If so, I don't know how your will be able to make it work without actually paying for the tethering plan. The job of Tethering Manager is to contact AT&T and verify if you have paid for tethering plan on your account.

I used this post to get my tether on, but now devices will appear to connect yet won't connect to the internet. Is there any known reason this would stop working all the sudden? I saw a post on a Vibrant thread that said they had issues with mobile ap. Any like experiences on Captivate?

uhhhm not sure.. maybe you can install the apk with file manager..? not sure if neet root for usb tethering though..
Try PDA-Net It works pretty good. It has a paid and a free version. Here is the website http://www.junefabrics.com/android/
Oh and no you don't need a rooted phone. Just install the Windows or Mac app and it will also install the Android app to your phone.
Works great on the G1.

ViperVivo hotspot issue solved

Hi all ViperVivo user's, if you are using this Rom you know how fantastic it is, the dev's have really outdone themselves. One issue was hotspot wouldn't work, but many roms have this issue when they first come out. After trying all the suggested fixes it still wasnt working for me, but I finally got it to work. This is what I did.
Format all partitions except sd card.
Install ViperVivo Rom.
Used the clean install option in setup.
After complete install wipe cache and delvik codes.
Install redux .3.
Then install redux .7 for 4.1 sense.
Yes all steps so far was suggested in the ViperVivo thread, however it still would not work for me.
So I then went to market installed wireless tether for root users.
Then I changed the settings inside the app to suit my device.
First I changed my device profile to generic ics/jb (wlan0).
Then changed setup method to netd-ndc (master)
Then choose your channel and security and ssid.
And it worked for me.
Hope this helps some of you.

The method works perfectly. Can tether now!
All you have to do is search for "wireless tether for root users" either in google itself or in google apps store and it comes right up.

Thank you to all those who took the time to reply, it is very much appreciated. So far I have received no negative feedback, so it looks like my system works.

THXX
so are there any method for stock users to apply?
or it must use redux kernel?
really appreciate your method:good:
You must have root, no root and and the app won't work. Also you shouldn't be having issues with a stock Rom, you sure Rom is correct Rom for phone?
