Does rooting affect OTA update? I am talking here about rooting without flash custom ROM just rooting.....
The way I understand it, as long as you have the shipping recovery, you should be good. You will loose root from what I hear
If I'm wrong someone will yell at me soon enough
Thanks I'll wait and see

I know MANY people have asked this before and it has been answered many times too but still I have some doubts...
Do you get the OTA Updates if your JUST root your phone? By saying "Just Root" I mean just rooting and not installing any custom rom.

You won't be able to flash any OTA updates with the test keys in a custom recovery.
Why would you WANT an OTA update after rooting since it will make you lose root?

If you "just root" your phone, you will get all OTA updates... though, you should note that you will no longer have "root" after you install an OTA update... most of the time, these OTA updates have a new boot image.
I am not a newbie to rooting or flashing roms, but I have a question for anyone who knows; can the hole in software that existed on 1.5 be exorted on the official 2.1 update from sprint? I would like to know before I try to root, that way I do not accidentally brick my phone from not knowing what I'm doing. I really only want to flash a 2.2 rom, since I know that Sprint will not be providing an official update, which, disappoints me, to say the least. I know that they might lose customers to Verizon, or even Tmo, thanks to their lax attitude when it comes to providing updates. Thanks in advance.
You should run the 2.27.651.5 RUU which has the root exploit that you can use. It is found here. Scroll to the second post and download/install first. Then proceed with the first post.
Yeah, post above mine is the most recommended method for rooting. I have read that the only difference between .5 and .6 is the root exploit was patched by sprint or htc. I think they purposely let a RUU with root be released for a day or two so the smart people can get a hold of the code, but call it an error. hahaha!
Hi All,
Was just looking into the prospect of rooting and I came across a post that basically responded to a guy asking whether subsequent OTA/Official updates would revert the root. the response was:
this might well happen. To be sure that this won't happen, don't update, or wait for a rooted version of the update to be released

It's the bit in bold that's got me wondering. I have my Nexus running stock ROM but rooted (with locked bootloader). I have the problem with the WiFi which 2.2.1 claims to fix.....and I just wasting time thinking that this update might get released as a rooted version so I can just install and not worry about losing root?
Any help gratefully received.
Cheers
1. Already released as a rooted version (check the ROM section)
2. Really easy to root with rageagainsthtecage ...
Right I can ask you the question then......with the rageagainstthecage root method, is there anyway to install the update without flashing a new ROM...I'm ok with stock.
If you're rooted - install custom recovery and install pre-rooted ROM.
Or try to apply the stock update through stock recovery, if you have it.

Just install the OTA - it will unroot you.
then root with "rage"
check out modaco, he's got frg83 completely stock with root. just flash using custom recovery. I didnt do a wipe so everything stayed the same just updated to 2.2.1 and yes it seems the wifi issue was fixed.
Just get the stock rooted from geo411m's rom!

The links here will also do it in 2 steps from custom recovery:
http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8419658&postcount=194
The geo411m link is a deodexed ROM and the one in the link above is not deodexed. Either way you get the fixes of the newer version.
Going forward, think of it this way with future updates:
If you apply the OTA, intending to lose root and then re-root, you always run the risk that all avenues of rooting (other than unlocking the bootloader) have been closed by the new ROM.
If you apply an update repacked for custom recovery, you don't have to worry whether the root exploit you used last time will still be valid.

Thanks for that - honestly not sure why I didn't think of it
Ahh found a flaw in my plan.....it seems that verification fails on my Vodafone Nexus One (UK). I'm guessing there isn't an upgrade path from Vodafone's Froyo update to this yet. Suppose I'll have to wait for Voda's 2.2.1
I know I have posted multiple times asking the same question, sorry about that still learning how this works. I am aware that if I do a software update, I will lose root. However it has been quite some time and I would like to update if I can. My worry is, will I brick my phone?. This is a link to steps I followed to root my phone. I am still very new to this, sorry. And thank you for you help! Love XDA

Yo will not get OTA updates while rooted, but you can download any available firmware for your device/country/opearator, one consideration to take into account: if you want to downgrade for any reason, you must not install a firmware with a higher bootloader version
Got a 781u1 ...would updating ota make rooting potentially harder if a rom were to come out?
how about if I gain root THEN update? would it undo root?
first thing is to check is whether you can unlock your bootloader, up until now the subject of rooting is moot if you can't, unless you get it unlocked as a paid service.
I'm not sure if updates will come while rooted, they won't if you flash TWRP. assuming they did come the boot.img most likely would be flashed on a major update breaking root.
you'd just have to extract and patch the boot.img again from a downloaded copy of the update and then flash that via Odin.
