Polling some data for research.
Basically just open up your drawer and count em.
Just counted all the non-system apps I have installed in settings -> applications -> manage applications -> all, and I have 30 apps installed.
In the app drawer, I have 55 apps that show up. Though maps has 4 different app icons, and phone and contacts are essentially the same thing.

144 apps listed in the drawer for me
Preferably whatever shows up in the drawer. Thanks guys.

Bump for the night crowd.
I got 85 apps in the app drawer here.
34 counted apps in the app drawer on a fresh install of CyanogenMOD6-RC2
I really see no need to have more than 50 apps installed. On top of that, the more apps installed, the quicker the battery drain.. potentially. I know you can use app managers for that sort of thing, but they wont always close everything and sometimes you forgot to use the kill all feature.
83 apps at the moment. More apps does not necessarily equate to faster battery drain. More apps that have services can equate to battery drain, but even then what the service does will make a big difference.
113, subtracting the 6 which show in AppBrain. Including built-in apps? That's too much like work. I suppose my poll would be 120+ if I bothered to count them.

Also, please remember to add to the poll even if you post in the thread.

You know wht wud b sick ? if there was a kind of task manager for android where i could choose wht default apps if open should remain open, other than that the moment i switch to another app the previous app if not on that list should be closed instead of me using a task manager to manually close it.
Dont respond with "oh android already does that" well it does that after a certain number of apps are open and memory is full, i want it to be done the instant i open another program.
Is there an app like this ?
i'm not sure if what i'm telling you is kind of what your looking for but the TasKiller app lets you put running apps in an ignore list so you can press the button to kill all taks and it'll leave the apps you ignored running. the free version of the app will let you ignore 2 apps whereas the paid version will let you ignore as many as you need.

Yea im usin "close everything 2" pretty sick cuz it shows num of programs runnin tht are not on ur ignore list....n when u tap on the widget it closes everything..yea but i was thinkin of somethin tht wud automatically close the previous program.
Yeah, I was looking for something like this as well. I'm using the paid version of taskiller and I'm getting tired of constantly tapping my screen. I know it can be done. I wish taskiller could be programmed (like every hour) to automatically "tap" itself and kill apps automatically. It would be the next logical step, no?

thanks, just downloaded it..seems like a very powerful app.
Hey guys,
I haven't been able to find very much on this, so if you guys can help, that'd be great.
This morning, I woke up, and my phone said "low on space". I tried everything from a reboot to taking the battery out, etc. Then I went into Menu>Setting>SD and Phone storage, and something caught my eye. The "Available Phone Storage" area was losing memory as I was looking at it! It decreased from 500kb, and settled down somewhere around 28kb. And two days ago i had 30MB!!! How did this happen?

The only thing I can think of being a culprit would be an app that needs to be downloading tons of data. I know the XDA app downloads data when you view new forums... do you use that a lot?

Ok, try this. Do a fresh install of whatever ROM you're using, and don't install any extra apps. See if you start to lose space like you are right now. Then, install the apps one by one, and you'll see which app is taking up your free space.
Have you tried a wiping and restoring your ROM? That may be your only option. Strange issue to have

+1...beat me to it
my wifes was doing this, i noticed the "contact storage" was almost 80mb! She has over 300 friends on FB and its set to refresh that every 2 hours. Try clicking on menu-settings-then accounts &sync... they are set at default to every2 hours. it would freeze her phone and couldn't receive texts or calls until its don't refreshing sometimes too more than an hour. not sure if this is a complete fix or not just tried it earlier today.
Its the HTC Mail app possibly. There are temp files building up. Only way to clear them is to be rooted and delete them with a file manager.

Hi all,
Was wondering if anyone experience jerky performances.
I have about 10 pages of apps installed mostly games and stock apps.
When I use advance app killer, usually i see stock apps eg. facebook, browser, ebook, etc.. When I kill them all, performance doesn't improve much.
If the 10 pages are the reason, any way to know which is running in background and sucking up resources?
The performance of your Gtab is jerky coz of the apps that run in the background even if you close them they restart.. u cn use startup auditor app to increase performance... if all fails hard reset nd install only required Apps not the apps u don't use but run behind nd eat up RAM nd battery

I was in a similar situation until I last had to factory reset my Tab due to the whole issue with Google Apps Google Accounts not having access to Google Checkout on the Android Market.
Installed over 100 apps on my first day with the Tab (over-excited, I know ), and realized that my Tab started to lag when opening the app drawer. The problem became most apparent when I shut down or rebooted the Tab; it would literally take minutes to boot up, and often it would freeze and force close my launcher several times in a row.
I chalked it down to having too many apps, but later read that many apps start themselves up on boot even if they had no reason to (e.g. Amazon, Aldiko, etc.)
I've since only installed apps that I would really use throughout the day, but would you guys say that so long these apps do not run on startup (say I disable them using the Autostarts app), I can install a hundred or even two hundred apps without the boot up lag?
So there's no way to see which app is running in background and % memory used, similar to windows task manager?
When I use Advanced task killer, are those 'apps shown' considered as background apps or are background apps invisible?
From my RAM manager, I see like 180+ to 200mb out of 400+mb. I think that's the remaining RAM ?
Anyone knows the stock RAM out of the box?
It might be because carriers pre load crap on them

Installed the free startup app and found the culprits ... GAMELOFT games. They are huge in size and think they eat up the memory in background/at startup.
After disabling, all back to normal.

Why on earth would you want to detect it by trial and error when there is plenty of apps you can use to find it specifically?

Use a app like system panel, It will show you all the running apps and there memory/cpu consumption etc.

Hi,
I notice that even if I kill applications "Maps" and "Sms" they keep showing in the list. I guess they are restarted by something. I have my GPS turned on but surely that should not start Maps? And I'm using Handsent for my messaging - not Sms.
Any advices?

Thanks.

Lately I've noticed a lot of apps myself that never used to start by themselves doing so now. Even after shutting them down in settings they seem to start up again. The only way I've found around this so far is to clear cache and data. Clearing data is a bit of a pain because it means entering user names and passwords again everytime you wanna use the app. If there is a better solution I'd also be interested to know. As far as I know from my own experience none of the app killing apps out there really work and I've tried a good few.

Hope you are not right. I'd hate to reset Maps. On the other hand I dont want it to use 25% of the battery doing nothing as it does now!

No that I'm seeing "Maps" in the application list without starting it is a new experience. And surely a navigation application is not a system app...

Got it!
My GPS was lit (as it should be), and if the "Maps" application is set to automatically register my locations it will fire Maps when the GPS is lit. Disable the GPS or disable the automatics in Maps and it all works
Thanks.

with system apps i ment the default apps that are preinstalled on your device / rom...
and it does preload these ^^
I wanted to know if you guys know any apks for malware or antivirus. I have been getting a lot of pop ups. I installed kapersky and malware bytes but they both do anything.
pop ups when browsing and or apps? Most likely you'll need ad blocking software and or browser extension.

It seems to be ad pop ups. I would be using an app such as whatsapp or watching a video through my gallery and the add just pops up out nowhere. it has never done that before.
If you get apps from places that are not "trusted sources" many of them have these pop up ads.
Go through and we which apps have Device Admin, Accessibility, and Draw Over Other Apps permissions
Are you using stock Gallery or another app?

Personally, I do not use any antivirus on my phone. I tried some of them before but finally gave up due to the large consumption to the phone memory which results into a slowdown of system and a faster drain of power. Plus, the major drawbacks of these free AV, like Avira, Kapersky, Bitdefender and more in Top 5 Free Antivirus in 2018, are the ads and popups bundled with them. They keep sending annoying ads and pop-ups during running, and even worse, sometimes they downloaded and installed things automatically.
Thus, if you download apps from playstore, surf the safe websites and connect to a clean outside device, do not bother to install a AV on your phone.

so l read this thread awhile back and thought nothing of it ............ until now!
I have "developed" the same Issue! and yes Its definitely an app that has access to "appear on top" and its under Apps> special Access> apps that can appear on top! Now for me to identify the culprit......? only issue though is if you have this issue your most likely the kind of user who experiments and installs several apps at once.... so here goes my trial by elimination process?
Hi had this problem.
I deleted the free APK that I had installed but I was still getting pop ups.
You need to go to settings / apps and right at the end of the list there was a app with no name or app logo.
Deleted it, problem solved.
I tried virus scan apps and nothing found it.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice! I deleted all the apps I installed in the past week and still no success until your post! Issue was starting to really bug me cos I kinda hate the idea that I dont have control over a device I paid for....lol
For anyone in the same position, see attached images if it helps and yes I installed a dodgy APK editor which i deleted but didn't notice this culprit App in the app list!

Yeah that's exactly what I saw on my list.
No AV will block an ad. They block known, to them, malware apks. Use something like Addons Detector from G Play store and/or Nice catch from S Galaxy store to list all the apks that have ads modules and then remove those you installed last or don't recognise or need.
Run Malwarebytes.
