i just got my class 6 16gb like a month ago, but i bet a class 10 16gb should cost heaps

ur right. if uve gotta hide somethin from ur gf/wife stick it in a mini sd, bury it under ur pillow and we're all safe.
I also have a Kingston Class 10 card in mine, seems to work well, but I really have nothing to compare it to. Didn't check read and write speeds yet as I only recently got it.
Odd company, but the one review on Amazon looks decent, and for that cheap... that is either really good or it isn't going to be a Class 10 card. I guess you will find out but they certainly exist.
I got a Class 10 Kingston microSDHC with 16 GB. You notice the difference if you preview like 700 pictures or move big apps to SD. I cannot say if it is much faster than a Class 6, but I think it is definately worth it. Also, with 2.2 and 720p recording it might work better, but I had no time to test it yet.

Can the Nexus One handle these speeds?
An fyi, the speed across the leash is capped so transfers dont go any faster unless you pull the sd card and plug it into the pc. I get a huge difference doing that with my class 10 but in the phone nothing over the stock sd whatever the hell that was.
Kingmax also make good rams, I used them back in the day on the IBM 600X.
If it's a real Kingmax then you are good to go.
I got that kingmax 8GB class 10. In my Windows 7 transfer (both to a usb reader and to the built in sd reader of the macbook pro), my transfer (write speed) is good but not 10MB/sec. It tops at around 8.5MB/sec and hovers at the 8MB/sec pretty much.
But then again my 8GB class 4 from PNY is going to around 6.5MB/sec lol....

Yes, faster SD cards do help quite a bit. I used a class 4 for a while and it was noticeably improved for apps2sd on eclair. I got a class 10 for Christmas and the improvement over class 4 was definitely noticeable but not as dramatic. I've read that there isn't much of an improvement between class 6 and class 10 due to hardware limitations inside the phone. For HD video recording I've seen recommendations for class 6+.
Khalpower's optimization script is amazing for eclair. I recommend the JIT, optimized build.prop, overclock and apps2sd. There is also a newer JIT, but I'm not sure if khal incorporated it into his script yet. I think we're still struggling to get the froyo builds to measure up to the optimized eclairs.
Not sure though, I find my XT720 is more compatible with class2 SD cards. I've got one 4GB Class2 Card, one 8GB class2 Card and one 8GB Class6 card which all made by SansDisk. all of these, the most compatible one is the 4GB class2 Card. Although the Class6 card is faster and perform better, there's an issue with stability, where the phone frequently cannot mount the card when the phone is booted.

there are class 10 micro SD but the prices are outrageous at the moment.
class 6 16GB is the best bang for the buck right now
the 32GB are still stuck on class 4
looking forward to get some 32GB class 6 when they come out

32GB microSD are also still pretty expensive (above $100).
Been using the Class 6 for a day now and I can feel speed improvements in loading apps or data from the sd card. I also cleared the factory settings to start fresh.
I've got a class 10 16 GB microSD card for 30 € in Germany, which is about 40 $. I think that's a fair price. I haven't used it yet, so I can't tell you if it is faster or not.

I'm always hessitant to buy something with that odd of a price/speed ratio. I was actually reading the reviews and found something VERY interesting. There was one person who was mentioning an app called SD Speed Boost that was described as being able to adjust the sd card cache, thus speeding up the read/write speed to the card. It was only a dollar, so I tried it.

It has improved the speed of my system 10x. I was skeptical at first, but I realized that if I run SD Tools from the market to test the speed before and after, it shows a significant increase in read/write speed. Obviously, those of us who have apps and cache on our sd card are constantly hitting it and the card's performance will affect performance.
Does anyone else want to tackle this $1 app and confirm my findings? If this is the answer to our slowness problems, maybe the settings that this app changes can somehow be added to our ROMs for everyone to benefit!

Is this the app your'e referring to? My write speed stayed about the same @10.7MB/s but the read speed went from @16 to 23 with a 1MB cache. I don't have any apps on the sd card to verify that aspect of any performance boost but Media Gallery loaded pretty quick.

Yes, this is the app i'm using. I've been "field testing" this all day, and I must say that I have never had this type of responsiveness and speed from this phone EVER. I am loving this $1 addition to my phone. I have a class 4 card that seems to be giving me 6mb write/33mb read and that is substantially better. I've tinkered with the different settings and found arount 3000 giving me the best numbers with my specific card. I can only imagine that a different class card would need different settings.

I think the app is just changing the value in /sys/devices/virtual/bdi/179:0/read_ahead_kb
The default value seems to be 128. You can set the value using e.g.

I have a 16GB Kingston "class 10" (see also complaints about this card throughout XDA--I got it as a gift and I believe it was on sale for $40 at the time).
I've been testing read and write speeds with "SD tools" (free). SD tools writes and reads 190 MB and displays a dial as it goes so I can see that the initial write speed starts pretty high (10 MB/s) and then quickly falls significantly within a few seconds (probably after an on SD card buffer gets filled) eventually stabilizing at 3.3 MB/s. So, clearly this card is not really class 10 at all as it cannot sustain 10 MB/s except for what seems to be a 1 sec burst. As far as read and read_ahead_kb goes:
128 -- 14.1 MB/s read (avg of 3)
1024 -- 22.4 MB/s read (avg of 3)
2048 -- 43.2 MB/s read (avg of 3)
4096 -- 38.2 MB/s read (avg of 3)
Optimal also seems to be 2MB for me.

I was hoping that someone would figure out a way to just add this as a default into our ROMs. It was worth a dollar to get this conversation started.
Hey folks, I used Generic Nook-2GB-SDCard-CW3010-VGCM7InstallerAsALTinMultiBoot-v6.zip to load CM7..but I was wondering if I can load other SD bootable ROMs with this? I would like to try others if I can. The reason is Im having issue with CM7 being finiky on my NC, like lag opening, not being able to open Market. Any suggestions to these issues too? Thanks, really appreciate the help.
You would need to wipe the SDcard before you can try other ROMs.
Also mainly not the ROM causing the lag and unresponsive but rather the SDcard class/manufacture. What kind of SDcard are you using?

It isn't that class 2 is better than 4. Normally the opposite is suppose to be true.
The issue is the class ratings just tell you the sequential write speed of the drive. Which is nice for copying data to the drive, but isn't helpful in determining if the drive is good enough to run an OS off of.

I agree with Ravynmagi - I am running CyanogenMod on my NC using a Sandisk C2, and it is very responsive. I have found others to be not quite as good.
Ive seen 32gb MicroSD..but with class 4. are these ok for D3 or do we need class 10?

I bought a Lexar brand Class 10 (32 gig) MicroSD from Amazon, and things don't load as fast as I thought they would. I had previously used this card in my HTC Desire Z and noticed that my Gallery would load very slowly. I thought maybe it was the Gallery or the ROM I was using or whatever... but then when I moved to my Motorola XT860 (Canadian Droid 3), I noticed the same thing. The gallery loads images / thumbnails very slowly, and sometimes when I take pictures with the camera, the image doesn't fully write to the card (the thumbnail for the picture will show half the picture, and the other half of the picture will be corrupted garbage). Even when I switched my phone over to the Chinese ROM it behaves exactly the same.
I'm thinking the Lexar MicroSD is at fault here... but I would like to continue testing by getting a new one, hopefully made by a better manufacturer/brand.

I have the Patriot 32Gb class 10. Gallery works fine with me, even if I have a lot of pictures on it. The only problem I have is with Spotify. When it downloads songs for offline usage, it would whine about the sdcard being corrupt/full even tho it works fine.

Are you using the stock gallery app? If so, try using "Quickpic" its free in the market and loads everything MUCH faster than the stock gallery.
If you are worried it may be the card, use a card reader to test the speeds on your computer. There are a few free applications out there that will do this.
I am using a Kingston 16gb Class 4 card in my XT860, same as the one I used in my Desire Z and haven't had any issues. Though I haven't tried to record any 1080P video yet... 720p doesn't have any lag but the write speed may be a bottleneck for the 1080 video.
I ran a multitude of tests on my Kingston class 4 and it regularly had a write speed of 6mb/s+, which is the minimum speed of a class 6 card. Some people aren't fans of Kingston but I've used a few of their micro SD cards and they have always had good results for me.
Thats a good idea. Ill test the read/write speed on my pc. Ive yet to find an sd card tester app in the market that will work with this rom (stock chinese ME863 rom on gingerbread 2.3.5, rooted)

Even though they are really expensive at the moment, 64GB micro SDXC cards have been confirmed to work in most Android devices. These cards come formatted by default with the exFAT file system which is unrecognized by Android but Android will format it to FAT32 and all 64GB are accessible. FAT32 has a limit of 2TB, but modern versions of Windows won't format FAT32 over 32GBs. They will still read/write >32GB FAT32 drives just fine.
By the time these cards come affordable Android will probably have exFAT support by default.

This may not really be related, but say I buy a Class 10 card of any size and am getting terrible transfer speeds. That's grounds to return it, right?
I tested my Lexar Class 10 32 gig and some no-name 2 gig on my PC. These are the results. I would appreciate it if any of you could try the same on your card(s) and see how they compare to mine?

That is on your computer. I think the real question here is whether the Droid 3 can read/write at a fast enough speed to take advantage of faster cards. Speed tests on a PC are going to depend on the card reader being used.
Was trying to rule out possible defect with my 32gig. Its pretty bad on my phone. Most photos i take dont write, sometimes half-write. Overall its sluggish. I blame the ME863 rom but im kinda stuck with it for now. For now i just have it set to store photos/videos on the internal flash.

Changing the cache size probably helps in Android, but not when the sdcard is mounted to the PC. Not sure the phone even has 1080p output via the HDMI (shoot me if I'm wrong), but I can get it to play 720p .mkv files without video stuttering.

I have had a 32gb pny class 10 since july. The speed is a little lower then expected, but the real problem is data corruption. I lose several files each day(found in the LOST.DIR) and I'm thinking its due to being class 10. From what I've read, the class 10s have problem with the random sequential read/writes (er something like that, don't quote me). Anybody else losing files on a class 10 card or is it just me?

have you tried puting games or applications on card? when i do that, i lose that game..until a restart the phone. and then i lose another game. and so on...

I experience the same problem, but it's really strange because this never happened on my Blackberry Torch before. I didn't have any instances of data corruption. I also think it's got something to do with reading the files, since I'm really not doing any writes to the disk.

But 4k write speed of 1.5mb
Apparently most class 10 have slow 4k write speed. 4k writespeed is used for many features with the faster non 4k writespeed reserved for intensive files.
I have tried to talk downv the above to no avail.
Is anyone able to help me find a card that complies with all three of the above requirements?

I dont have one, I say its your only option because its the only one with a reputable name.

The write speed for 4k is between 1.4 MB/s and 1.7 MB/s depends on the reader, although there is one guy who got .5 MB/s in an asus card reader.
Some people uploaded screenshots for the wrong card, check if the benchmark its made on the 64GB micro sdxc card to be sure if its what you want

I have done some reading and found the below so thought id share.
Net result is that the sandisk 64 gb ultra card is good.
It's 4k (random) speeds are fast enough.
No difference between ultra and mobile ultra other than age (though some suggest that the mobile ultra is only class6)
It also appears that u can buy ultra from US and mobile ultra from UK.

May I ask why you need speedy 4k random writes.
For taking vids and pics, class 10s should work really well. You planning on using the drive as a swap partition perhaps?

I just like to have the latest possible functionality if I am spending the money.
I have heard (I am no expert) that if you are running apps from the SD card then you need the 4k speeds.
My most important issue is that it appears to be unclear when you are buying these cards from Amazon.co.uk whether the cards are class 6 or class 10.
They never specify the "Model code"

When your writing big files...it finds a spot to them in and writes in sequential blocks ( as much as it can anyway)
When using apps, yup, I guess it would be writing tiny files so your performance might be impacted depending on your configuration. However, games don't really write to disk that often... Maybe when it's saving... but that would hardly affect you ux.
I dunno, I can't really think of a practical scenario when your ux would be impacted by this.
Ambiguous labeling seems to be a separate issue.

Any idea on how I can ensure I am buying a bona Fide class 10 from Amazon?
That is the 40 euro question. You can't even tell if a card is a genuine sandisk, or actually 64 gb until you get ut. Some sellers are extra devious they trick the cards into reporting they are 64gb capacity, and your computer will say they are 64...but they will only store 4 or 2 gb (the seller rebranded a 2gb). This is specially ytue from ebay purchases.
Typically, personally anyway, I just go with a trusted seller...typically the ones specifically sold by amazon.
(Really love the stock keyboard but it needs autocorrect-on-space ala swiftkey. Going back to SwiftKey Flow beta... No number row though =( )

l was going to go with swift key too.
But then u can't use the handwriting mode.

* When you get a card test it with "h2testw_1.4" which will test that it's the size you bought

That's fits in with what I have read before.
The real problem is trying to distinguish between class 6 and class 10.
It's never stated on the card itself so u can't tell if the seller is misdescribing.
Get the samsung MB-MGCGB
Class 10 (70 MB/sec Read, 20MB/sec Write.
I've had the sandisk and when transferring 4-5 gig movies there's absolutely no comparison... but they're about $100 for the samsung...

I'm not sure how many of you are aware of this handy little device but for those of you who are not, here is a little information.
I recently discovered this tiny thumb drive, pen drive, flash drive, whatever you want to call it, at my local Wal-mart while looking for a DVI to HDMI cable. I already own several flash drives, however, the difference between the ones I own already and this one is that I can plug this one directly into my phone. It functions as a flash drive for your phone much the same as it does for your pc, and for LG G2 owners, USB OTG (On The Go) support is already built in so it's basically plug and play.
Now, if your like me, many of you here are flash happy addicts. Well that is where this little drive can come in quite handy. On my drive I have several different ROMs, multiple kernels, nandroid backups and even a few GAPPS packages saved. I also have the stock KK baseband and a flash-able version of LG's camera app. You never know when those files might come in handy and all you have to do is reach in your pocket, pull out this tiny drive and plug it into your phone. Of course you could always just save all that to your phones memory but some of those files can quickly add up, taking up valuable space that you would rather use for other things. This could also prove to be a life saver for those with little internal memory and no sd card slot or while in the middle of that long flight from.......well, i think you get the idea.
If your not on a LG G2 or would like to use this drive on another phone Sandisk has a list of supported devices on their website. Most or many high end phones support USB OTG and there are many apps that help with that as well such as Chainfire's StickMount. Of course you will have to have a rooted phone to use that app. And then there is the official Sandisk app Memory Zone which is available free on the app store. I mention the official app last because personally I don't care for it and it doesn't really suit my needs. But don't get me wrong, it is a great app and it makes transferring files from your phone to the USB drive very easy. I just prefer to use a file explorer to move the files I want.
If you choose to go the route I did and you are using a LG G2 then the USB drive will be located in the root directory under storage/usb/. Also one other tip, when using this or any other USB drive with your phone make sure you un-mount the drive in settings/storage before unplugging it from your phone. You may be able to get away with just pulling it out but the proper way is to un-mount it first and in certain situations you can run into problems if you decide to skip that step. When plugging in the USB drive it should automatically mount itself but if not you can also mount the drive the same way. And if you choose you use the Sandisk app, plugging in the drive to your phone will automatically launch the app.
The Drive comes in three different sizes, 16, 32 and 64 GB ( 2.0 only no 3.0 ) with prices ranging from $19.99 - $49.99.
This drive has been quite convenient for me and so i'm sure it can be just as useful to many of you, that is why i decided to post this. I'm just trying to give a little back to a forum and community that has given so much to me.

read/wrize speeds are good too (it takes around 380sec to backup/restore 3gb)

Yes the price is a bit steep when compared to other flash drives but it does eliminate the need for a OTG cable which saves $5 to $10 dollars. Even then its still a bit more expensive then a regular flash drive of comparable size. But you are also paying for convenience when you by this drive.
As far as speed go, being 2.0 its not the fastest. Technically it should be capable of speeds around 30 MB/s however most users report speeds closer to between 15 to 20 MB/s. I haven't bench-marked this drive myself yet but will be doing so very soon and will post my results here.

I bench-marked this drive and here are my results:
Computer side: Read 20.7 MB/s & Write 7.4 MB/s

btw this stick is so user friendly made that it wouldn't bother me even if it had 5mb read/write...
just makes things simpler (especially backups and huge file transfers between pc and phone)
looks like Kingston makes something similar too, seems to be a little cheaper (at least on amazon). not sure if R/W speeds are comparable as i didn't look that far into either. labeled as the "Data Traveler MicroDuo"
i've seen several lookalikes on ebay when i was buying mine but for me the sandisk is no1 choice

Microduo 16gb? Are you talking about the 16GB SanDisk dual sub drive? If so I'm not sure why it would be heating up. Is your phone also hot at the same time? If so the dual usb drive may be acting like a heatsink for your phone. But that is just a guess.

i also don't have heat problems with my 32gb sandisk dual usb otg... what i wouldn't mind on that stick is some kind of a led light to indicate it's alive when it's connected
i've noticed the heat only on my transcend regular usb stick when it's connected to any device a bit longer... (this one: http://uk.transcend-info.com/products/images/ModelPic/359/gb_csuJF_spec_JFT3S_110819.jpg )
Meenova seems the best way to go for the G2. I have one and it is a lot smaller than the sandisk, which is what I personally prefer.

sandisk is about 3cm big (1 inch), so it's not an elefant
not that i have it always connected to the device so the size of it doesn't bother me...
i usually connect it once a week to make a twrp backup, phone sits on the table in that time, and i disconnect the usb 5 minutes after...
i think i'd probbably lose it easier if it was even smaller
btw sandisk has both full size usb and micro usb connector in one unit which makes pc to phone file transfers easy as hell... and file transfer speeds of sandisk are quite good (takes around 400-450 seconds for 4 gig backup)
i didn't see meenova with both connectors (or i missed that)

but it should be ok because read/write speeds are above 10mb/s (320kbps mp3 is 1/3 of a megabyte per second)
it should even handle mkv video files without a problem (although i didn't test yet because i don't use it for this)
suggest me a reliable and trustworthy otg benchmark app and i could test it for you (sandisk dual otg i mean)
