[Q] sprint backup doesn't restore contacts list - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey everyone
I just upgrade my htc hero from sprint from android 1.5 to 2.1 the original ROM
I used the sprint backup v2.2.2.149 to backup everything.
when I restore my backup the software says that the backup was successful,
but the contacts where not there.
does anyone have an idea how I can restore my contacts ?
or how I can extract an *.sbf file to see the contacts ?
please help
thanks,
Itzik

There's a Sprint backup?
Why aren't you using Google for your contacts?
If you want to post the file, i'll see if I can't rip it apart.

nope...they've had Google Contacts since 1.5....When you add a new contact it asks Phone or Google.
I would probably just rip it apart with a hex editor first. See if there is any thing inside it that suggested a format then go from there.

I'm know 1.5 had Google Contacts, and I'm pretty sure it even automatically added them to Google/Gmail when you first activated and synced your phone. Have you actually checked your Google/Gmail account on a computer to see if all your old contacts are stored in there somehow?
Or if you upgraded to the Hero from another phone -- do you maybe still have the old SIM card from that older phone? I'm sure a Sprint store could pull those contacts from the old SIM card and add them to your Hero. They did that for me when I first upgraded from the Samsung Rant to the Hero a few months ago.

What the -? Unnamed unremovable contacts?

Hi everyone,
help me! I see something very strange that I've never seen before. I go into my contacts and there are 5 contacts there called "Unnamed" and there's a sim card icon next to them with a lock. I can't delete them, I can't do anything! What are those? There's nothing in the sim manager. Oh and I'm using the original wm6.1 rom with an at&t sim.
Thanks!
help meeh
anyone? pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease?
try deleting from another phone?
Do they appear in Outlook when synced to your PC? If so, can you delete them there? If not ChumleyEX's idea sounds like the best course of action...
I had a similar thing happening on an iPod, corrupted songs which can't be deleted
strange
thanks for your replies! i tried to put my sim into another phone and there were no unnamed contacts there. i don't have outlook (ew, i don't like to use it), so i can't look there. i dunno what are those.. agh
Anyone?? I have the same issue and nothing works... Happened when switched to Aserg ROM and then was frequently switching between SIM cards from different countries..
right,
yeah it happened to me when switching between sim cards from different countries too!
does someone know how to delete Outlook databases?
I have old crap there, spb Diary was able to show me a email account folder which doesnt exist anymore for months! All uneccessary data is still stored in \*.VOL files(
solved it by trick I already used before:
1. backup contacts etc
2. rename \pim.vol to \pim.vol1
3. reset
4. delete \pim.vol1
-> Contacts is empty, <Unnamed> entries are gone

awesome! thanks, that did it for me too. strange bug or whatever though
this is making me nuts. i have them again. i just switched my sim cards and tadaa.. now i can backup restore again.. is there any way to stop it?
I have the same problem. They showed up after upgrading to WM 6.1 and I can't get them to go away.
I have unnamed contacts on my phone but am a bit confused by what to do to get rid of them
1. backup contacts etc
2. rename \pim.vol to \pim.vol1
3. reset
4. delete \pim.vol1
-> Contacts is empty, <Unnamed> entries are gone
Can anyone please tell me where I am supposed to rename pim.vol? Do I do that on the phone and if so, where do I find it? If I do it on the computer can you please let me know where I locate this \pim thingy
yup, I'm a newbie

You can rename it on the phone...use your file explorer and go to "My Device" scroll down till you see a file called pim...rename that...
use PIM backup to backup your contacts, messages etc...
Ever used your SIM in another kind of phone ie Nokia?
Pal of mine had similar problem and it was due to his Nokia saving contacts to the SIM with group info added that is not compatible to other brands (non-standard).

yes, but all i do is that i remove my at&t sim, put in a t-mobile sim (for checking sms and stuff) and then put back the at&t again. then it shows up. with other phones (can't try other pda) there are no "unnamed" contacts.

It works for me, thanks a lot.
Just by following there steps and there, after a reload from a pim backup file the unnamed disappeard.

This trick had worked for me too.
It actually deleted all SIM card contact that had been stored into the phone (device). The \pim.vol is in the root folder of the device. When you renamed it to \pim.vol1 and reset the phone, the phone will automatically create a new \pim.vol which is empty and therefore you are able to delete the \pim.vol1. It is impossible to delete the initial \pim.vol, so doggydog2 actually rename the file and ask the device to recreate another pim.vol.
Thanks a lot, doggydog2!
What if i backup contacts with "Unnamed" as well and after reset and deletion of file reimport backup file? Will i get "Unnamed" contacts again?

I know PIMBackup has certain problems with the sense interface, so...

yes, i upgraded to energyrom phoenix. but im nt using tf3d at all! i disabled it for spbmobileshell
My bad, it's not sense PIMBackup has problems with.
It's Windows Mobile 6.5. There are numerous threads here on XDA reporting problems with PIMBackup.
But then again, the program hasn't been updated in two years, it a little outdated and problems are to be expected at some point.
I suggest you revert to an older ROM, and backup your contacts using something like MyPhone from Microsoft, or sync it to outlook.
These will definitely restore your contacts when upgrading to a newer ROM.
Or, if you do not want to revert: you can extract the contents of the PIMbackup file, rename the extension from pib to zip. Inside you will find all your backuped info, including a file with all contact info. I'm not sure how you can use it tho.
Might want to make sure that your SIM contacts are not hidden. If not all of the contacts were on-phone contacts by default Energy has his SIM contacts hidden. You should be able to go into Start/Tools/Tweaks/TouchProTweak

i did that. i read that its actually a zip file. and after extracting it, i can use excel to edit the information inside. but the problem comes in here. when it is extracting the contacts file, they said its damaged or corrupted. guess thats where the problem came in.
If the file is really damaged it's a showstopper.
Is excel telling you the file is damaged? I made a backup myself and although I can open the file in excel there is a lot of jiberish I cannot use for extraction.
You can try and open it in a simple app like notepad or wordpad.
The real contact info is scattered around the file contents, but you might be lucky and extract the most of it.

contacts from WM to android

what are you guys using to transfer them over?
I used lookout. backed up my contacts then download lookout from the android market and restore.
There is an application called Sprite Migrate than you run on Windows Mobile, then convert on pc, then run on android.
However, I cannot find the latest version in the market... The link from the sprite site to download the apk is for an older version
Its on spritesoftware dot com
The version on the site downloads:
Sprite-Migrate-0.2.1.13.apk
I need version 0.3.0.17. How can I source this? I've posted a question on the sprite site, but nobody seems to help out there...
Thanks

If you have internet, this is the BEST way. It will preserve everything properly (pictures and a.ll)

That's pretty cool, wish I'd thought of that in the beginning. I originally just sync'd my contacts with Outlook, then exported them to a .csv file and imported that into gmail.

Nevermind, seems like this phone needs an overnight leave alone. To sync properly!

Backup:
go to contacts then go to more options>import/export contacts>Export to SD card.
Restore:
go to contacts then go to more options>import/export contacts>Import from SD card.
But i faced one issue with this method i exported all my contacts to SD card and later i imported all the contacts from SD card again.. but in all the contacts + symbol was missing.. normally i used to save the number in this format (+91-123456789) "+91" is my country code..
After importing all the contacts form SD card the '+' sign was missing(i.e.91123456789). When i tried to call it is dialing with the number 91123456789 and saying plz check the number.
so try to back up only one contact and restore it again and check hw it is??
Thanks mat..
but as mentioned above I checked I dont have option of export only import and when I click on it,. its came with pop up. "No SNS Site search"
Even on the on more option I can only see,.1)View Form, 2) Delete Contacts,3)Hide Picture, 4)Information..
waiting for suggestions..,
Surf the Market, there are lots of free Backup Applications out there!

Restoring my contacts from HSMBackup which is stored in the local HDD

Dears, I need help !! I had HTC One M7, I usually backup my phone using HTC Sync Manager as a backup option and store the files in my local hard disk. I lost my HTC phone, but luckily I backed my contacts to the local HDD but the mistake I did was, I did not completely backup the contacts to my Gmail account. Now, I am now using a non HTC android phone. I see the files are backed up in my local hard disk under the folder HSMBackup with some sub folders with junk names.. when I enter into each sub folders I see different files with .xml format. I tried to rename then to .CSV, .XSL, .VCF etc.. but it does not work for any of them. I am not sure how to recover these files. when contacted HTC support they said I need to use another HTC phone, then connect it to my PC and then backup my contacts.
Is there a way out to exact the files from these HSMBackup folder?
Hey! I'm looking for the same. Please let me know if you were able to recover the contacts! For starters, I tried a method similar to : http://blog.interrupt3h.com/?p=328 but no luck
