A2SD questions help please

I a rooted running Fresh 2.0d. I am now interested in running A2SD, but have a few questions. In reading thru several posts I found the below steps if you are running Fresh.
Back up sd card
Boot into recovery
Choose partition SD Fat32,EXT2,Swap
Reboot phone
Reload files onto SD card
When it says reload onto sd card, what is meant here.
I backed up the card, ran the partition and moved the data back to the card. Now what do I do, how do you get all of the apps from the phone to now run on the card.
Also, is there a big benefit to this, is it really going to make a big difference?
Final question, I have a 16gb Kingston MicroSD. I have no idea what class of card this is, All I know is that it is 16gb. What type of card do I need for this to work properly?

reload to sd, just means copy all the files from the FAT partion pack to the drive. The FAT partion being the stuff you can see in windows....more than likely Pictures, "Lost", Rosie. Few other apps that put folders there too.

Let me reword this.
You copied all the files off your SD card. DCIM and stuff like that. More than likely to your Windows Desktop.
Plug your phone into USB, Mount as a Drive. Copy the files you copied off initially back to the SD Card drive. (it is probably smaller now than it was before so everything might not fit if it was full)

Class 6 FTW - But I used to run on a Class 2 and it was fine.
Big Benefit = More Apps/On phone storage space - HOWEVER sometimes it is just a PITA to deal with. Especially if you switch roms alot.

Did you titanium backup or something similar to back up your apps? If not start downloading your apps again. The big benefit to apps2sd is you can download many more apps since your not limit to the internal storage space. Also on some roms you can upgrade without reinstalling your apps (if your lucky)

Ok, so let me get this straight, A2SD is for market place apps that I have downloaded? I was under the impression that it was for system apps as well. I am a noob so just want to make sure my info is correct. I have mybackup pro which backups aps. Will I have to uninstall the apps and then reinstall on card? Could you please give me the proper steps on this?

You won't have to Uninstall/Reinstall anything. As I recall the move is made automagically on boot up if it detects an EXT partition. And system programs like Rosie do not get moved to the sd card TMK.

Before I do this, do I have to have a card with a certain speed, or does it not matter?

To my understanding just the apps you download are installed on it, i could be wrong. As for the steps....
1. Backup your apps
2. Nandroid backup
3. Paritition
4. Install a2sd
5. Boot up
6. Restore apps

Speed doesn't really matter a whole lot. If you have a 16gb card its likly a class 4+ card. I have never seen a class 2 16gig before at least. It would kind of defeat the purpose.
Class 6 is the standard for someone who would want to buy a new one, and they have a class 10 lurking around some sites. But you'll be fine on what you have. Again, I was on a class 2 for a while...racing thunder was the biggest issue, it was laggy from the SD card. haven't tried it with the new one.

When you download apps from the marketplace (free or paid), Android will put it in one of two locations: /data/app or /data/app-private. Both of those locations are on the phone itself. The problem you run into is running out of free space on the internal storage space of the phone. A2SD, in its basic form, moves the data in /data/app and /data/app-private, to matching directories on your ext partition of your secure digital card. It also creates a symlink where /data/app and /data/app-private are located. These symlinks are nothing more than shortcuts to the directories on your SD card. Android still thinks it is storing apps in /data/app and /data/app-private, but it really is storing it on the SD card.
When the instructions say to backup the SD card, what it is talking about is the FAT32 part of the SD card. As someone said earlier, it is the part that Windows can actually see. You take all the data off of your SD card and put it on your computer. The reason you need to do this is that, when you add the ext2/ext3 and swap partition, you will repartition the entire SD card, which means you will lose your data on your FAT32 partition.
When you are restoring to SD, you are taking the contents you had previously on the Fat32 part of the SD card and putting it back onto the Far32 card.
As far as apps are concerned, the A2SD will automatically move them for you...but it is always a good idea to do a nandroid backup first to make sure that you have a way to restore an image in case something goes wrong.

I am running Fresh 2.0d. Someone mentioned to install A2SD, thought on Fresh it as already installed, am I missing somthing?

I am on Fresh 2.0d I thought on this Rom it was already installed. I formatted the sd card as told. However, I don't think it is working. ON the Recovery menu there is a place that says transfer apps to sd & delvik. Am I supposed to use that?

No. You're not missing something. Fresh 2.0d has a Cyanogen version of A2SD. It's originally in the 1.5 Roms that are for the Hero.
Two other people, TrevE and myself, makes a variant of the original that is in Fresh 2.0d. TrevE works with ROM developers to put his in while I update mine in the distribution channels.
Whoever told you to install A2SD probably meant to go download the Darktremor A2SD 2.5 or 2.6.1 and flash it to your phone.
That part is optional, as Fresh 2.0d already has an A2SD installed.

It does it automatically.
What makes you think it isn't working? Since you rooted, I presume you have ADB. If so, enter a console session on the phone by typing adb shell
Once you have done that, type the following:
cd /data/app
pwd
If pwd returns /data/app, it isn't working.
If pwd returns /system/sd/app, A2SD is working normally.
Do the same for app-private:
cd /data/app-private
pwd
If pwd returns /data/app-private, it isn't working
if pwd returns /system/sd/app, A2SD is working normally.

I could not figure out how to get the version on Fresh d to work. I downloeaded the 2.5 version and it is working fine for me. This minor change has made all of the difference on the phone. I have asked on several posts how to speed up the hero and this truley made the difference. Thanks for the help.

Restore apps FROM FAT32 (android.secure)???

First off, I have searched this site and google and have turned up no answers.
As we all know (hopefully) the new froyo ROMs feature the CM settings which allow us to install apps on the FAT32 partition of our SD card. Much more convenient than making the ext2/3/4. However, last night I installed about 75-100(ISH) apps onto my FAT32 with my freshly flashed SuperFly Froyo ROM by HTCClay. Awesome ROM, btw. So anyway this morn i go to turn the phone on and I get a G1 spash boot loop on the screen. Dont know why. Anyway -- I wiped everything, then flashed again and all was well and still is. However, all those APPS that i installed on my FAT32 are no longer there. But when i explore the SD card the android.secure file is still on my SDCARD with ALLL the .ASEC files on there --- how do i get this installed apps back on this fresh ROM??? They're still on the SD so there must be a way to get the back to show/launch from the launcher.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I doubt they will not. Apps2FAT write encrypted files to SD and do a loop-mount to access them. So the root explorer will not be able to re-create this mounts. Probably one of the a2sd - experts aka Firerat can write a script to restore them, but also here I doubt it will not be possible, sorry.
Apps2FAT in my opinion is a failure. Use apps2ext and you are fine. Only my 2 cent.

Just use EStrongs File Explorer and with its App Manager use backup option on app you want to backup, it will place .apk in /sdcard/backup/apps by default. For me it's easiest way to extract apk from your phone. It don't matter if app is on FAT32, ext or in internal memory.

Yes, as long as you have a running system and the FAT-aps are mounted, but he did already a wipe. So all connections and mount points are destroyed and so the sytem will see only encrypted files on SD ...

Another problem with moving apps to SD

I rooted.
I flashed attn1 R012
I ADB'd (why?)
I partitioned with ROM Manager
I cannot get an app from Market to work to move my apps to SD.
Did I install the wrong ROM for this?
I thought this was supposed to be a feature of this ROM.
Al I wanted to be able to do was get rid of bloatware and move the apps to the SD.
This is getting overwhelming.
What do I do?

Download titanuim backup and check in a2sd and see if u have a ext?

You have to also download the free version the pay is just the certificate to unlock the extras features

Ok, I did a2sd reinstall at terminal emulator.
I downloaded Titanium free to go with my unlock version.
Here's what I see now:
Internal 194MB (117MB Free)
SD Card 7.61 GB (6.65GB Free)
SD Card (a2sd) 239 MB (124MB Free)
So, looks like it is setup now, right?

okay my first post!
I did the above mentioned all looks good. Do have to do this every once in a while to move the apps to the sd card or will all future downloaded apps be moved to the sd card at download?

All future downloads/installations will automatically be placed on the ext partition. So nope, just do it once, make sure it's installed, and you're ready to take off.

1. if you're using DT a2sd then yes you will need to reflash it after flashing a new rom.
2. again if using DT a2sd you will have to go into the terminal emulator and type 'su', hit enter. Then type 'a2sd cachesd'. This will move your dalvic to the ext. On the built a2sd there is no option to do this.
3. to get the apps of the old ext partition you will need some form of a linux operating system such as ubuntu (you can run ubunty right off a cd or usb without actually installing it to your computer) and you can literally just copy and paste. Windows does not do this as it cannnot see you ext partition and I have no idea if Mac can or not.

yea der is a software "minitool partition wizard"...
but u can do it by cwm recovery mod...

I highly recommend using CMW for making the partition. I've had some problems making them through my PC. With CMW you just set the amount of size you want it and wait till its done.
Then install S2E.

yea its better to make it by cwm and its very easy....
but make sure you have the backup of you sdcard before partitioning...

If your phone is rooted, follow these steps -
1) Download root explorer or file manager app from market.
2) Open the app
3) Go to system/app
4) Delete the following files
swype.apk
thinkdroid.apk or thinkfree.apk if you dont use thinkfree office(something like that, i dont remember the exact name)
youtube.apk
fmradio.apk and fmradio.odex
voicesearch.apk
voicerecorder.apk and voicerecorder.odex
etc..
Delete these files only if you dont use all these apps. Don't blame me later on.

Apps disappearing from EXT4 partition
Hi everyone. Since I see that at least part of this thread seems to be talking about Link2SD, I wondered whether anyone might be able to offer some insight into the problem I am experiencing.
Before that however, let me explain that I started off with an 8GB micro SD card with a 500MB EXT4 partition. I had been fast running out of space in the internal phone memory, and my SD drive itself was also filling up fast. When I installed Link2SD I managed to regain a considerable amount of free space on the internal memory.
The problem is though that once I had linked the majority of my apps to the EXT4 partition and backed up the device in that condition with CWM, once I rebooted the system all the apps that were linked had disappeared. However there are still some 244MB of files on the EXT4 partition that Link2SD says are in use, and I cannot delete them.
I then purchased a 16GB micro SD card from Samsung, and tried to restore the CWM backup to that card....my apps were missing apart from the few that remained on the FAT32 partition and in the phone memory....I should mention that this also happened before I installed the CM7.1 ROM.
Now things have really become problematic. I decided to remove quite a few apps, then download the latest version of Link2SD from the apps Market. But although there is now plenty of space on all partitions I keep getting the 'insufficient storage available' message, and I cannot install anything. I also did a CWM restore on the original 8GB SD card with the same result. This is why I cannot lay the blame fully on Link2SD, as there has to be a glitch somewhere in my installation.
FreeSpace [Root] shows the following on the 8GB based system:
Cache free space 20.7MB
Data free 16.6MB
Ext free 265.0MB
SD-card free 959.1MB
System free 48.2MB
So what gives? I really don't understand what's going on. I am running the latest CM7.1-RC1 Cooper-Grif ROM build number GWK74, with Kernel version 2.6.35.7-CL-562111 [email protected]#1 with all updates necessary. This is costing me more time than I can afford to lose on this, and I really need to find a solution once and for all, preferable without having to reinstall everything again from scratch, which is what I intend doing once the official Cyanogen Mod becomes available finally.

I got some problems doing this. This is what I did:
I had many apps installed and moved to SD (8gb class 4), so I made a backup of the SD content.
I formatted it, and created 2 partitions (6.8gb and 515mb) using Minitool Partition Wizard. Both are primary and FAT32 (if I create the 2nd partition as EXT2 the phone says SD is damaged).
Moved my backup content again to the 6.8gb partition and rebooted the phone.
Looks like everything is right but Link2SD says "second partition not found".
What IM doing wrong?
Would Link2SD detect that 2nd partition if I flash my phone and I start installing apps now that my SD has 2 partitions?

IMHO from what I've experience, Link2sd does not accept fat partitions. I had the same problem.
Are you looking for the correct type of partition?
Start Link2sd>menu>More>recreate mount scripts and choose FAT32/FAT16

Try s2e best app for CM roms,nearly perfect app, dnt have to link ur data again n again, it does its job without bugging u, try it u would love it

Unable to install app. Delete some items and try again. Out of space

Hey guys,
I recently rooted my s3 mini to JB 4.1.2 by faria and i was wondering why i cant install any more apps as my ram is used up by all my apps. is there a way to clear/wipe all this data and start from scratch installations or any way i can move this huge game files in android/obb to another location in my sdcard to save space for app installations on my phone memory.
also, i have tried directory bind,app2sd, lind2sd and gl to sd(root) none of them seems to be installing or working for me as i still face the prob with installation of the same app.
kindly help.

Had this issue before. Try to reflash and reboot the phone.

Tried that, didnt work thanks for your quick reply tho. its been happening even before the 4.1.2 update. even when i had the 4.1.1 XXJL by avicohh rooted. any other suggestions?

Go into recovery maybe, and wipe cache from there, either that or factory reset your phone

Everything from ur last post was tried except for the downloading of the busy box. it wont even allow me to download it. it says insufficient storage. i cant proceed from there. i got the rest of it. i ran a chmod to 777 and instlled smanager . any help ?

Had the same error.
Simply wipe dalvik-cache and everything will work fine.

Remove a LOT of your apps. That should fix the storage problem until you get the script into /data.

try changing default install location. possible with normal device options, dont remember where. or else use app2sd to change it.
although i have the same error, when trying to install anything on extsdcard (with enough room on it), with faria rom v5.1.
with leatherface v2 i didnt have the problem if i remember correct.
update:
i still have the problem too.
wiped dalvik, factory reset multiple times, cleaned odin files, although faria rom is also using odex?
phone works fine, but i only have 4,5gb max internal (fused internal and sdcard).
and i cant install anything to external. i selected the options *install to: autoselect by android, internal, or external.
i tried it with more then one app, like rom toolbox pro.
i also noticed that chaning it it one app, correctly alters it in another.
i asked this in q&a, and i read what i can searching the whole forum. still i wuold really like to know:
-is 4,5 gb max combined/fused is normal for s3 mini +faria rom)?
-is it normal to have .obb partition completely empty, even having installed multipple apps?
its 402mb, totally free.
And i have other partitions also 402 mb, totally free.
-/cache partitions remains at 14mb, whatever happends, even after changing usage of cache heavier and lighter.
-cant install anything on extsdcard.
-/mnt/sdcard shows in that directory, with root explorer, as linked to sdcard0.
same in root:/sdcard (not sdcard0!) linked to -> sdcard0
but it has no apps in it. and only some folders.
?i dont know if i am correct in assuming that "->" symbol in root explorer means: linked to.

did u used linked to sd?if yes you have to select default instal location to automatic...that solved my problem...the setting in link 2 sd....before this i select install to ext sd card and every time theres error insufficient memory...

no that is not what i mean exactly.
i do use link2sd now, to use my extsd 2nd partition. but it gives an error: installl_failed_insufficent storage.
even when i put it on auto.
when pressing create link, i get: i/o error.
what do you have selected to auto move to 2nd partition?
my primary question, has to do with the fused internal+sdcard phone memory (so not extsdcard), of faria firmware.
Phone sees the fused internal as,... internal memory.
and the phone sees my extsdcard as external sdcard.
i presumed the reason for this is to be able to install apps on ext sd too, by default. (so without link2sd or others).
because the problem as i see it is:
now i have less phone storage.
i still cannot install to external sd card.
i would really like to know
- what should be the benefits of this fused memory? why did faria do this?
- beacause now i have less or same memory, and no benefits.
-what i have to change in system mount, or fuse, to get back original non-fused.
- And/Or, how i can enable extsdcard to install to it too.

Have you tried with an ext4 partition on your external sd, for link2sd? I've read somewhere that it worked.
Otherwise Directorybind do work. I've binded the whole Android folder without any problems at all :good:

found a solution (maybe?)
I personally had the same problem right after flashing a new rom on my i9100. I read through the script amd it was quite literally just unmounting and mounting the sd card again. I wasn't sure how it could possibly be a simple matter of mounting the sd card but it worked so I'm okay with that.
If you're on 4.1.2 then you can probably manually unmount and mount the sd card by going into system settings, storage and scroll down to sd card for unmount. It'll take a short while to unmount and another to mount again and check for errors. Not sure if you have to do this will ever boot but it beats not ever installing anything, right?

if u used lucky patcher remove previous patches and stuff like that
