Just got a new one quick qustion when u power off nexus one my friends vibrates and flashes trackball mine chimes and flashes trackball then screen goes off im running 2.1. also the touch screen is like i think so new its like hard to slide ur finger is that normal?
his phone is not on silent ethier?????
If you could write your question in understandable English, you'd have it answered by now.
I just got a Brand new Nexus one phone and i noticed when i power off the phone it makes a chime sound and trackball light up then screens goes off on the other hand my friends nexus one phone when he powers off, it vibartes instead and lights up but his phone isnt on silent? why is that? also the screen on my nexus one phone is like so new its hard to slide my fingers? is that normal?
Fingers don't slide well on the screen when they're even a bit wet, that might be an answer to n.2.
Enable "always vibrate" in notifications (default is "vibrate when silent"), and you'll most probably have the same result (not that it matters - it's just the phone being turned off, who cares what it does on the way there...).
where is that, im in settings and i dont see vibrate when silent

how do i hangup a call?
the screen is black and therefor inaccessible after a very short while so i cant use the
on-screen red end-call buttun, and also the button on the right-bottom (phone-icon down)
doesnt work!!! (or sporadically: cant put my fuinger on that yet....)
i tried the tweak where my screen will stay up while having a call, but that one doesnt seem
to work on my rom-version or so? (standard 1.35 dutch version).
is there another (or new) way to keep the screen up while on a call maybe?
please help: this is highly annoying as you probably understand.....
Thanks group!
The (hardware) button on the bottom right should work normally if you want to end a call. It could be that there is just a little leg between pressing it (once) and the phone actually responding to it.
If you want the screen to pop on during a call, just press the power button on top of the phone. Could have figured that out yourself... (even by searching the forum)
what a problem.... lol.. did you assign the hang up button to something else??
thx guys!
no, not assigned to something else.
the power-button is ok yes, thanks. still: the screens display should stay on, right?
thank you!
much appreciated

No the screen light will not stay on when your making a call. Simply put and its been repeated so many times on here now...that when you make a call the diamond light goes off as soon as the sensor senses that its near your ear...the sensor is next to the earpiece...clear little led light. What you can do to get around it...which is what i do is ring the number you want to ring and dont put it next to your ear until you get the vibrate ie when the call connects then put it next to your ear and the light should stay on...well it does on mine but if that dont work then when in a call just press the middle navigation button and that will turn the phone backlight on for you.

Spawn, you're absolutely wrong about the sensor... the screen light goes off regardless of whether you hold the phone against your face or not.. it's a timer..
Older phones like the Touch Cruise didn't have the sensor but yet it turns the backlight off after a few secs...
It's a timer setting in the Registry.
It turns the backlight off to save battery.

i thought spawn is right but i did a very simple experiment.
called my self from my fix phone and live the diamond on the table face up. i answered without picking the phone and after a few sec the light went off.
happyguy82-1, spawn and kukuriku-0
if there is a timer it has a registry and where there is a registry it has to be a "tweak".
btw, another way to have the light back and a safe background for yr ear is simply pull out the pen. you''ll get a note that will not bother anyone because it is not actionable by yr ear lol!
if you'll light on the screen with any other means you and your partner in the conversation will get for sure a few "beeps" when the phone pad is touched by yr ear.

Ermm no it doesnt...i just made a call to test your theory....didnt put the phone to my ear and when i did the light still stayed on. Left the diamond still connected for about a min or so and still the light stayed on...
On my phone i have the TLR version 1 rom running and made a few adjustments in the power settings so dont know if thats made any difference to the light staying on etc.

Just curious...in the TD1, I used S2U2 to avoid accidental touches to the screen but as the TD2 already has the side to answer/end .. what do you use now?
I'm having a few issues I did when I got the first diamond where if someone calls, or you call out via bluetooth, the phone screen turns on
Usually end up hanging up on someone when I call them because the screen touches the pouch/pocket etc
I think there are a few apps to disable screen apart from hard keys etc - just curious what the majority use

Is there a tweak for this in ACT? With my t pro when a call goes thru the screen goes dark almost immediatly, so I have the opposite prob as I need to use the kp to enter numbers sometimes. I could see where using bt it could be an issue tho.
I was wondering if the D2 came with a proximity or light sensor to disable/turn off the screen while it is against your face. I hate my Elfin.... I'm always pressing things with my face and getting into all kinds of menus.
My brothers Behold has sensors that shut the screen off. As of recently I have been pressing the power button to turn off the screen after I answer. Can't wait till mine ships on the 11th.

I asked the same question in another thread, and would be very curious about the answer, especially since gsmarena.com does not mention it as a feature, in comparison to the D1.
the iPhone has this feature...and I really can't imagine the D2 to do not have it. I hope I won't be surprised negatively.
i presume it does
Bearing in mind it automatically dims the backlight, and increases it. It must have one somewhere!.

I sure hope. I read that the Touch Pro2 has it so I'm hoping that the TD2 does also. If not that would be a shame. Good thing I'm getting used to pressing the power button right after I answer.
The D2 does come with a proximity light that dims the screen. If you look at the manual it's listed in the diagram specs page as well.

that sounds really great! but does it mean that it's inactivated too? dimming is indeed good, especially in the dark not to have a glowing ear - but i was wondering if, with the dimming, comes the inactivation of the screen too, in order to avoid accidental pressing of buttons with the ear/face.
Hi!
Because I didn't get any answer in the help-thread I try it this way.
When you receive a phone call on your XZ, does the screen turn on again when you move the phone away from your ear?
This problem drives me crazy! Every phone call (active and passive...) the display of my phone turns off (as it should) when I put the phone to my ear. When I put the phone away from my head, the screen doesn't turn on again. I always have to press the power button to enable the display again. In rare cases, the display turns on as it should. But when a phone call is longer than a few seconds, the display won't turn on again.
The only reason for this problem I've found on the internet is the usage of a screen-protector. Actually I have a screen protector installed, but is has a cutout around the proximity sensor. I've also tested the proximity sensor with an app - it turns on/off correctly when I move my hand in front of the phone...
Does anybody of you experience this issue? I've tried a lot of firmware versions, but it's everytime the same... No matter if I use CM10.2 or different stock roms...
I hate it so much - not being able to stop a call before being redirected to an answering machine only because this piece of shi*** refuses to turn on the display during a call.
I'm looking forward to your answers - I can't imagine that my XZ is the only one that shows this behaviour.
Regards
is there really nobody with any screen on/off during call problems? can't imagine that my XZ is the only one... or is there an android-"feature" I donn't know?
I've already removed my screen protector... but nothing has changed...
I also have this problem frequently, i enabled power button to end calls under accessibility setting so if i press it, it ends the call, so could be partial solution to allow you to end calls, but not a real solution at all if you want an option not to end the call but to have the screen turn on only. Let me know if you find any other solutions

Actually stopping phone calls isn't my main problem. But it annoys me that I can't check the current time by removing the phone from my head for a second. Also when I have to interact with an answering machine (windows activation hotline for example^^) - everytime I have to input a number during a call this f*cking screen is off and I have to press the power button.
Don't people use their XZ for making telephone calls? Am I the only person on earth who uses the phone for other things than watching movies and surfing the net?
I also want to know if this is a general Jelly-Bean problem... If so, replacing my phone with another one would be meaningless.
Press the power button twice to activate the screen during call.

Pressing the power button ONCE also works to turn on the screen during a call. But that's the point. I do not want to press this damn power button. What does the phone has a proximity sensor for??? When I start a call and remove the phone from my head after a few seconds, the screen will mostly turn on itself. But after a while (a minute or longer) moving the phone away from the head will not turn on screen anymore...
Is it too hard for phone manufacturers to build a phone that can be used as a phone? If I wanted to have a tablet I would have bought one...
Problem solved. I have a Nexus5 now and it is just awesome. May the new owner get angry with this piece of sony sh*t.

This might seem like a dumb question but whenever I set my phone down and it is moved even in the slightest the Active Display lockscreen turns on. Is there anyway possible to disable that?

You will get used to it and come to love it. the great thing is that it doesn't adversely effect your battery, it uses the special built in processors. I thought it was weird at first but now I just tap my phone or bump the table to see my notifications.
I love it because I never have to push the power button to turn my device on. This is a great way to save wear and tear on your power button. A lot of devices that rely on one button all the time (power button) end up with that button not working anymore. If I didn't have this option I would be using my volume rocker to power up my phone.

This is easily my favorite feature about the Moto X. All I gotta do is pick up my phone and it automagically shows me any notifications and is ready to be unlocked. Power button? What's that?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I like this feature. I usually tap my finger on the screen or press off to one side so the phone rocks slightly on the curved back to get the display to come on. As someone else said, it saves a lot of wear on the power button. I can't tell you how often I clicked my Razr Maxx on just to see what time it was, and clicked it off again immediately. The button never wore out, but it's nice not having to do it at all.
I do have a question though. I got the phone on Wednesday and didn't notice this at all until this morning, and I don't know if it's normal or not. While getting ready for work this morning I noticed the Active Display fire on and off a few times in a row. I thought since it was right at 7am that I may have gotten a few emails close together or something, and didn't worry about it.
When I got to work I set my phone on my desk and was reading emails and such and I noticed the display puling on and off about every 5-6 seconds. It fades in, holds for maybe 1 second and fades out. It only had one notification, for Plume (Twitter), which only polls every 15 minutes in the background, so I knew it wasn't getting new notifications repeatedly.
I can't remember if this was happening yesterday and I just opened it up right away to see what it was for, or if something actually changed. I disabled Plume from the Active Display list, which didn't change anything, I got the same result for email (Maildroid) and Snapchat.
I guess it kind of makes sense that it repeats, as there is no LED on the phone, but it seems a little excessive. I don't know how much power is saved by using white on black in the small area of the screen, but it's bugging me a little because I don't remember it doing this before.
Thanks for any input anyone has on this...

It's normal. When you have a notification, the screen pulses instead of having a notification LED.
I haven't measured it, but it's my impression that it slows down the pulsing if the phone sits quietly for a while after the notification happens (I seem to notice that, if I ignore the notification, I don't see it as much). It really uses almost no battery, though, so don't worry about it.
Does the phone always light up when driving? I don't remember it happening on my old X but it's lights up at every bump on my new X.
Thinking I've frozen something I shouldn't have. Did not use assist on either phone.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm guessing yesterday I either cleared them quickly, or they were present long enough to go slower and I didn't notice the repetition.
I will have to play around with what I actually want notifications for. Plume (Twitter) is the worst, followed by email. I wish I could turn on different channels for Plume so that Mentions/DMs could go to Active Display, but regular tweets didn't, but still have it do all in the notification shade. I might have to just settle for not getting a notification for all new tweets. Or increase my poll time...
Email might get shut off too. I get too much spam to care, and rarely get any emails that are urgent enough to warrant it.
Yes, mine lights up when driving Lol. The second I press on the gas it lights up, tripped me out the first few days owning the device, but I'm used to it now.

Non rooted, T mobile branded 3 month old note 8. No water damange, no drops etc.
Using chrome one miniute, set the phone down to watch a movie on my tablet, picked up the phone to check messages and boom. Screen is off. The phone works, I can even answer calls because I know where the answer button is on the screen, haptic feedback works, all indicator lights work. The phone screen remains off.
Tried a soft reset (tried hard reset too the best I could being I cant see the screen) and the phone seems to reset based on the vibration and indicator light patters but the screen remains off. It's as if a physical connection between the screen and the brains of the phone has been severed. Literaraly the weirdest thing that has happened to me in a decade of Android phone ownership.
Googled all the black screen issues with these phones and most of them are resolved with just a soft reset... some said that the phone is in it's lowest dimmed state and go to a dark room and i'll see it faintly and then can increase brightness... no luck...
Has anyone experienced this?
I would say it's a warranty job, just tried turning my brightness to zero and you can still see the screen.
I did have a similar problem on an old note that had root and custom rom though but I had somehow set the volume rocker to control brightness and it had lowered itself to minimum in my pocket

so I had it replaced under warranty through T mobile. Refurb phone will come in today. One quesion. Should I let the Tmobile techs do the data/settings transfer from old phone to new one or just do everything myself from scratch (which will obviously take longer).
This happened to my phone twice for the past month or so. (both in Nougat and Oreo - Non rooted) Black screen but phone seems to be responding -- I can receive calls and notifications etc -- And force reboot doesn't fix it. I've also tried drainging the phone when it first happened to me but doesn't work. HOWEVER, it gets okay so randomly. Like I just left it for couple of hours and it just worked when I hit the power button.
I did tried bringing the device to Samsung but what they did is to just manually upgrade/reset the software in their end which I could have done in my part but I just let them do it. They told me to come back if it happens again which is kinda BS.
I can conveniently say this is a Hardware issue. I will wait for it to happen again on my phone and request for a replacement. Phone is 4 months old when it first happened.
I have the same issue with blank screen but phone is working.
It started couple of weeks after i dropped my phone on the ground. There is black dot on my screen and broken glass but phone was working ok and was still pretty usable. But then it started:
Display works fine but when i switch display of, lock the phone or display switched because of its timer it didn come switch on... But phone works, i can use it with blank (black) screen.
I had to do force restart so the display will turn on with samsung logo and booting screen, and keep on till another switch of.
I was trying every setting (but no hard reset) and then i found a little hack:
When you turn on the "Always On Display" (AOD) function you can let the screen switch off or do it manually, wait for 1-2 sec and always on display will come up to the screen. Then when you press home button or lock button screen will swtich on normally. YOu can type pin and use phone witch screen working. But when you try to unlock from "AOD" with your finger or your eyes it unlock but with screen black.
So i was using it like this. everytime you need to wait second untill AOD comes up, but it was working fine.
Problem nu 2 is that now it stop working, AOD is working but when i want to switch screen on from AOD it shows black screen and phone is working on blind.
So everytime after my screen goes black or to AOD i have to unlock the phone blindly and "Force restart" it and have to keep waiting until boot, and then have to never let phone to screen of.
Its not usuable.
¨
Now what do you think? Is it hardware problem or software problem? Because screen is working but randomly. The black dot of dead pixels on the screen is getting slightly bigger in time (about 1 year) but its like 1.5cm round. Maybe this cause the problem? And why hack with AOD was working for half a year and then stoped working? There wasnt any updates right before, but i tried to install some apps (non display related) so ill try to uninstall them.
Hawe you got any idea if i can repair it on my own even if i loose the waterproofability?
Or can it be replaced for free if i have a warranty? (I dont have insurance)
Thanks for your tips guys.

If you're under warranty it will likely be a free repair, unless they find other damage. Like moisture damage.
As far as fixing it yourself, it's just about as cheap to have Samsung do it than it is to buy the parts yourself. It's $229 for Samsung to do it, and you'll maintain the water resistance rating.
same has happened to me

This has just happened to my note 8 too. I was about to update it and had started it. set my phone down and picked it up and phone screen is black but can hear the haptic feedback.
I can only see the lock screen and the notifications. Everytime I try to unlock my phone I only get to see a glimpse of the notescreen and then the screen turns black. Even when I try to go to camera through the lock screen the screen goes black too. When I charge my phone it heats up so I haven't really charged it as well. Has this also happened to anyone? It seems as if the phone's sensitivity still works in all places but when I unlock it the screen just goes black.
I also have problem of freezings and always rebooting. Tried soft and hard resets/factory reset. Still same problem. This phone has hardware issue. Do not buy.
I realize this thread is quite old but I have this exact same issue now. I have managed to discover some other information by playing around with various settings which are noted below. To begin with, I was able to used the AOD hack posted above for a while but it no longer works. The only way I can get my screen to come back is with a soft reset - but as soon as the screen times out or i turn it off, it goes black, with or without AOD enable. All the on screen buttons still work as well as the haptic feedback - I just can't see anything.
Now on to what I have found:
One thing I have found is if I turn off adaptive screen brightness and crank the brightness slider to the right, when it goes black I can faintly see some of the buttons - enough that I can turn the phone off or restart it from the power menu (If I switch the default setting to night that also helps to see the buttons a bit better). Also, if I enable night mode I can also see the brightness slider faintly but when I slide it left, it just makes the screen completely black and when I slide it right, it only returns it to the very faint brightness level.
So at this point I am stuck. To summarize the issue:
1. When the screen either times out or turns off, it is still "alive" but goes black. It will not return to normal brightness.
2. Turning off adaptive brightness and cranking brightness slider to right allows you to see faint buttons after screen times out but won't return to normal brightness.
3. Enabling night mode helps to see the faint buttons, in particular the brightness slider a bit better. However the screen still cannot return to normal brightness.
4. The only way to get the screen back to full brightness (albeit temporarily until the next timeout) is to turn off the phone or reset from the power menu; or soft reset holding volume down + power simultaneously.
Hopefully someone else has figured out a way to recover this. I am on Android 9 with Samsung UI 1.0
Phone is completely stock, never rooted and completely out of warranty.
