is it possible for me to replace my camera wit the htc camera app that is on the hero rom, and if so where can i get it??
not sure if possible, but it's easy to find out.
all you have to do is download the hero rom and extract the files. go into the system folder and look inside of the app folders and look for HTCCamera.apk OR Camera.apk.
take it and push it to your phone and reboot, it should work or not work you can test. it wont harm your phone. make sure you backup your current camera app first so you can revert if the hero camera dont work. Make a note of what file name your current camera is, and rename the hero camera to be the same thing. then push it.

this is the exact steps you need to take.. first you need adb installed
adb remount
adb pull /system/app/Camera.apk
adb install directoryoffile/HTCCamera.apk
adb install directoryoffile/HTCAlbum.apk
adb shell remount
if it doesnt work or you get a FAILURE when pushing either one of these .apk files just push back your old Camera.apk

ay yi yi... look here... it will tell you exactly how to get ADB up and running... once you do, you will wonder how you ever lived without it...
ADB, Fastboot, Nandroid for n00bs
also, this write up is for the 1.5r2 SDK, the setup for 1.5r3, which is the newest one is exactly the same
IF YOU HAVE THE SDK INSTALLED, THEN YOU ALRREADY HAVE ADB. needed that in caps so you dont go installing stuff u might not need.
if you are on windows, hit start > run. then type CMD, then the dos box will pop up. here you can enter in the commands that palosjr gave earlier.
i was following the directions on the thread posted but when i tried to put the sdk folder in my c/ drive it told me i didnt have enuff space...would it be possible for someone to put the htccamera app into a theme for me?
I tried it but it resulted in following error:
Failure [INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_UNEXPECTED_EXCEPTION]
For either one (HTCCamera and HTCAlbum)
ya nm good luck im going to see how it turns out i would love to have HTC camera and Album seems nice.

probably needing some other framework from hero to make this work... i will do some searching for you and see if i cant get it to work. if you guys want the HTC camera, why dont yall just flash jacheroski1.8 or 2.0? both are solid, and in case you didnt hear, all the SMS issues are fixed.
I have ran those roms and ya they are solid but i like to stick with cyanogen roms. Im only really after the ablum app with multi touch. Now that BFS has hit the scene I'm tempted to give a hero rom a look see but i want to see what cyanogen will do next lol.
I looked around in two hero roms and found in the lib folder two *.so files for the camera and one for album. Those are the only files that are named after the apps. On a side note, do the camera and ablum app rely on one another? The reason i ask is the thread was started about the camera app and then it is recommended to push both by adb. Getting album to work is what caught my eye to begin with all though htc camera app would be nice.
Any progress on this front? I tried a couple Hero roms and really liked the camera and gallery. I can't stay on Hero because it doesn't work right with Google Voice dial-thru. Is there a way to get them ported into Cyanogen 4.1.11.1?
Install_failed_already_exists
Interesting... trying to adb install HTCCamera.apk (taken from the Sprint Hero dump) into Cyanogen 4.1.11.1 fails with the message [INSTALL_FAILED_ALREADY_EXISTS]
Doing the same for HTCAlbum.apk gives the message [INSTALL_FAILED_MISSING_SHARED_LIBRARY]
OK - rookie here - how do you install a .apk - I've downloaded one to my computer but don't know the next steps. The manual is silent and I think this is such a basic question that search on the forum didn't help.
Too bad there wasn't a basic FAQ for us newbies.
Thanks.
Jack
Connect your phone to your computer, drag the apk to your phone, use a file explorer on your phone (estrong) etc, to find the file on your SD card, click on it and it will give you an option to install it

You could also just use HTC Sync that came with your phone and push the .apk with that. It's how I installed Swype.

Hi danger rat. Im alittle new at this. How do I do that. And if I do what else will I lose?
Is there an original keyboard apk that I can just install?
Very much appreciated
If you don't know how to restore a backup, you probably didn't make one...
The keyboard has more than just the apk to it, so it's a bit more complicated than just switching the old apk back...
Ask in the keyboard thread, because I'm sure you're not the only one.

reflash the rom that you are using. and, since you are kinda new to this, ALWAYS make a nandroid backup in recovery. one da it WILL save your ass
...or you can do that, too. xD
Might wanna back up your apps and settings first, with Titanium backup.

Or save time and flashing just adb push old latinime and the lib.so back in and reboot.

Hi ilostchild. How do I go about doing that. Thanks everyone!
If you got android sdk installed you can do it . But if you don't its best to titanium back up everything you need and reflash your current rom
You can also do it with Root Explorer, or Terminal Emulator...

I was gonna say terminal but then I thought if he did it would probably fc soon as he did. Root explore would probably be the easiest way to go
I do have terminal and also sdk.
How would I go about it in terminal and or sdk? Thanks a bunch
Get a copy of your existing ROM.
Extract the following files:
LatinIME.apk
libjni_latinime.so
The apk goes in /system/app
The lib.so goes in /system/lib
You'll have to remove (rm) the existing files...
It will be far easier for you to do in Root Explorer.
Reboot when done.

Ok Sdk way
Adb shell
Su
#mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtd3block /system
#exit
Adb push latinime.apk /system/app
Then
Adb push lib.so /system/lib
Adb shell
Su
#reboot
And there you go got stock back..works both ways too if want to push gb kb
but to do this make sure Adb is in environment variable
If not gonna have to put all files in sdk folder where Adb is at

Stupid question....
Surely re flashing CM6.1 would restore to stock so to speak?
(I took a nandroid so no worries if it would not )
Can't it be as easy as someone giving me a .zip of the stock nexus kb and installing it from recovery?

Does anyone currently have a flashable version of the multitouch keyboard that works with Edify and is compatible with Comm Rom? I recently updated to the latest Clockwork recovery and it seems that all the ones I had are not compatible with Edify. I really miss it.

Just push the apk and the lib file via adb.
Drop the files in your tools folder in sdk (if you don't have sdk installed...shame on you )
Then open a terminal and enter the following...
adb push LatinIME.apk /system/app
adb push libjni_latinime.so /system/lib
then reboot and you should be all set.

I'm trying right now, but turning on USB Debugging seems to be causing my phone to completely lock up until a battery pull. Grrrrr, I hate ADB. I can already see this wasting hours of my time tonight. Thanks, though. I hope I can make this work.

Shouldn't be doing that comrom has debugging enabled by default it also mounts the system partition as rw. Did you change kernels or something?

Ever since I rooted in my sms apk there is only one contact that the icon actually shows the picture. Everyone else is just the ghost icon. I had the same issue from time to time on my Inspire but it would cone and go. But on the vivid its been ever since I rooted. I've searched and searched but only found a bunch of solutions that don't work. As far as I can tell there is nothing different between the one contact that it will show the pic and all the rest. Also the pics show when it comes in before I unlock the screen but when I get into the actual sms apk it only shows the one. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

What ROM are you using?
What SMS app are you using?
Where are your icons coming from (Facebook, custom, etc)?
Did you happen to have run the Photo Unlocker app?
I haven't even flashed a Rom yet so I suppose the original ruu would be the answer to that. No sms app nothing fancy. Yea most contact pics are from Facebook. Even the one of the girl who's shows up. I've tried unsyncing my FB account and various other things in various orders. I can't get anywhere
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
Try running photo unlocker first. Let me know if that does anything. You can find it in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25375055&postcount=3
If that doesn't work, we need to try to fix the permissions of your icon directory. I think unlocker does that already though, so it's easier just to run that app.
(Once you run it successfully you can remove it)
This will sound dumb. I can't find the option to allow non market apps. It won't let me open it. When I try it directs me to security settings but that option is not there

Sorry man, my bad... It's in Settings -> Security after all. It's called "Unknown Sources".
It took me to this from the app after trying to install. I thought if I moved it to my SD that would help but it did not. I swear that I have seen that option before I rooted. They just need to hurry up with the HTC One X+ so I can a decent phone.... Harumph

Weird, I have no idea why it's not there for you...
Oh, are you running GB still? It's probably in Settings -> Applications
---------- Post added at 05:05 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:57 PM ----------
Try this either way... Open a terminal (I use ConnectBot personally, but use whatever you like)
and run this line: chmod -R 777 /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/files/*
That will change the permissions on all your icons and the directories under them. You might not need to use Photo Unlocker unless you're using a 3rd party SMS app anyway.
I'm on ICS. As far as I know this phone was stock ICS (craigslist).. cool I'll try that when I get home and let you know.
Not in asetting-apps either.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
Your best bet is probably going to be just flashing a ROM. Bare minimum try out the Stock rooted one. It's somewhere in Vivid Development on here. Contact pictures has worked on every single ROM I've tried. Strange that you don't have the install from untrusted sources option though. It's been on every AT&T release since gingerbread I believe.
chmod -R 777 /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/files/*
-Operation not permitted-
Is the response I got after running that in a terminal. I d/l connectbot but as I am not so familiar with much command line work I couldn't even figure out how to open a terminal but have Absolute System Toolbox for Root. That has a terminal emulator in it so I ran it from there.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
Either /system wasn't mounted read/write (try browsing to it with a Es explorer with all the root options turned on) ortry this commandline command:
mount -t ext3 -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 /system
If you can't execute that, you're not root.
Same thing. Operation not permitted. System was mounted R/W and everything I have looked at has told me I'm rooted. I followed hansoons kit to the letter.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
In your terminal try doing the command "su".
Then type "whoami". That will tell you for sure if you have root or not.
If you can su to root, then try executing those commands again. Try the remount first to ensure it's mounted R/W (/system is mounted read-only by default whether you're root or not), then the chmod command again.
Tried those commands no such luck. If im not rooted then why is everything asking for root permissions and telling me that im rooted? Im so confused
I'm confused too now. Maybe your terminal app doesn't have root perms?
